Cover Girl: Adele for Cosmopolitan Magazine

Posted on November 02, 2011

Hey, remember that time Adele got the cover of Vogue and we shocked the world by having an opinion and saying something bitchy about how they zoomed in so tight on her face because they’d rather die over at Vogue than have someone over a size 2 on their cover?

Well compare and contrast, ladies:

Adele for Cosmopolitan Magazine

Adele covers the December 2011 issue of Cosmopolitan in a Dolce & Gabbana dress.

Cosmo may have some hilariously bad cover taglines (“When He Shouldn’t See You Naked”) but you can’t say they have a problem putting an average-sized gal’s body smack in the center of their covers. Bless. Hair and makeup look fantastic and the dress looks really cute on her. A shame that pink background is so awful.

And she’ll never regret falling for Mr. Wrong, because it made for one hell of a fantastic album.

  • Sobaika Mirza

She looks fab. Love the dress, and love her.

  • Anonymous

Yes, the eye-searing pink looks hiddy with her gorgeous auburn hair.  Hey, TLo, maybe there’s a Cosmo intern who reads you all and passed along the Vogue criticism?

    • Anonymous

Thank you for nailing it – I couldn’t figure out exactly what I hated until I saw your comment.  Her gorgeous hair obscured by pink.  Ugh.

      • Pinup Ghoul

It’d look smashing if she was in a sleeveless red pencil dress and if it was on a white background. Basically, if it was a totally different cover. SHE looks amazing, even if the design elements clash.

  • Anna Maria Diamanti

That background clashes horribly with that dress. But I love how she classes up what could have been a trashy look. Same way she classed up the exponentially trashy VMAs.

  • Anonymous

    She’s gorgeous

    • Laura Schultz

yes she is, and a gorgeous voice

  • Anonymous

She looks great but I wish the cover had a different color story: I love leopard prints mixed with purples or reds. With her coloring, it would be the purples. Much better than that pink (and sallow yellow).

I kinda wonder what those ‘100 sex tips’ are though. Cosmo sex tips are usually as much about what men would actually want, as Josh’s clothes are about what a woman would want. But (again, like Josh’s clothes) they can be good for a laugh.

    • Anonymous

You are right, purple would have been a better choice for the background.

Funny analogy about sex tips and Josh’s clothes – thx

    • Ali

The tips are definitely good for a laugh – I remember reading one involving a doughnut and a blowjob in high school and finding it the most hilarious thing ever for quite some time. The males of my acquaintance were not so amused (I’m guessing it was the thought of teeth).

      • Anonymous

They’re often things likely to cause your partner pain and anguish. Like the suggestion that you play roughly with their balls that pops up often. Or that you gently use your teeth during blowjobs. Or that you stick your finger up his butt, particularly without warning him. Sometimes I wonder if they’re intentionally taking the piss.

        • Anonymous

For the record, all of those things can be terribly effective with the right man.  Just sayin’…. :)

          • Anonymous

Yeah, I don’t think there’s anything particularly out there in that list (except for maybe the “without warning” part); depends on the man.

          • Anonymous

            Damn skippy, tomstl1… :-)

          • Anonymous

They cane be, but they carry such a strong likelihood of having the opposite of the desired effect that they probably should have warnings attributed. Like warning, most guys will crumple into a pile of sadness if you treat their balls unlike the most delicate kitten you’ve ever met. Warning, most guys shudder physically if you just mention teeth and blowjob in the same sentence. Finally warning, anything goes up anyone’s butt without “hey, would you mind me sticking ___ up your butt” coming first is likely to result in “YO! OMGWTF! NOOOO!!!!!” from your partner.

Just throwing that stuff out there seems a bit like a practical joke akin to saying “you know what guys really like? For you to have a glass of ice water by the bed and, when you think they’re about to come to dash their penis with it.” Sure, Rule 34 says some people like any combination of words enough that you follow them with porn you’ll find some. But I must question the motives of someone giving that potentially dodgy advice.

        • Gaby Ripoll

In my new worldview, Cosmo is actually run by a bunch of chain-smoking, jaded bitches laughing at the things their readers believe so earnestly. I want a Devil Wears Prada meets Best in Show type movie about that. Will someone get on that?

          • Anonymous

Several of my close relatives are/were NY magazine editors for decades. Both are striking looking, quite smart, focused, well-educated, and in stable long-term first marriages. Knowing them, I don’t think editors laugh at their readers. I think they try to balance what sells with what they think their readers are interested in. I also worked in magazine publishing. “Cover lines” are meant to sell magazine at the retail level. You have approximately five seconds, maybe less, to get someone’s impulse buying attention at the checkout/magazine stand. If it were possible I think many magazines would have two different covers, one for retail and the other for subscription sales. The subscription version cover would likely be far less cheesy and obnoxious. As the marketing person for the magazine I worked at, I fought a monthly battle with the editors over the cover lines. Since my magazine was primarily sold by subscription, I almost never won my fight for “sexier” cover lines. Sigh. On the other hand, the Cosmo sex tips thing is an industry joke.

          • Gaby Ripoll

            Oh I was just kidding.

        • Anonymous

          hysterical … thank you

      • parissweetheart

I remember that article! I also was in high school and remember thinking that 1) would be a big mess 2) is stupid 3) why do we have to incorporate food?  There are far better ways to foreplay with food but glaze and … biological materials does not sound good.

    • Sara Munoz

I have a feeling they have about 10 different Sex Tip templates and randomly drop words in, like Mad Libs. “Sex Libs”, if you will.

  • Anonymous

    This bitch is fierce!

  • Anonymous

And there’s that word “plus” right next to her no-no zone… subtle!

    • Psy_Chick

That was the first thing I noticed. There’s no reason for the word to be there. Ubersubtle.

  • MilaXX

  • akprincess72

She is a stunning young lady, kick ass Adele!!!

  • Anonymous

Well, bravo. I often see extreme close-ups of Adele’s face (often tightly framed with hair) in media, so it’s awesome to see something else for a change. The woman is stunning and doesn’t deserve that kind of anxious tiptoeing (not that anybody else does, either).

  • Anonymous

I was thinking the exact same thing about that pink background! Then you said if for me. Bless you!

She looks sexy and totally fab. She’s a little over exposed on the radio at the moment, but it doesn’t change the fact that she is a talented stunner!

    • Sara Munoz

But she just had to cancel a bunch of concerts, so she good use the good PR. Magazine covers are much less strenuous, and don’t hurt her voice. :)

  • Anonymous

    She is gorgeous.

  • Charlotte Horseman

And the big word PLUS on her belly,…but who cares.  She looks amazing.  Beautiful girl.

  • Anonymous

Sheer hotness. My only quibble is the blush. I know this is her standard issue makeup and all, but I just want to remove about 30% of it and go from there.

  • Anonymous

No doubt about it, girl is FIERCE! But her makeup was applied with a much-too-heavy hand.

  • Anonymous

    She looks cute!

  • Aidan B

Girlfriend you are FIERCE! I hope her vocal chords are healed soon!

  • Anonymous

Those are some scary claws they pasted on her fingers.  Otherwise, she looks fantastic.

    • Anonymous

That is one of the first things I noticed.  TALONS!

    • Lori

That’s how she wears them.  And because she’s so many flavors of awesome,  I kind of love them on her.

  • Anonymous

Seriously, I would switch teams (temporarily!) for her.  Talk about the ultimate combo of confidence, sultry, sexy and beauty!!

  • Geoffrey Bleeker

Am I the only one who’s a bit perturbed by the huge “PLUS” written across her hips?

    • Anonymous

Well, I don’t know if you’re the only one, but I didn’t notice it.

    • Toto Maya

I didn’t until someone mentioned it. Still, what word would they use? “ALSO”?

  • Anonymous

Nevertheless, I think she’s been Photoshopped.  And she should learn to smize.  Both of which make me sound more critical than I really am — she looks great.

    • Amy Fee Garner

Wait, smize?  Help a girl out.  What’s that?

      • Anonymous

Tyra Banks. Advice to models: learn to smile w/ your eyes.

        • Amy Fee Garner

          Am practicing at once.  Thanks!

    • Anonymous

OMG the photoshopping is pretty funny – if you saw someone with a head that big walking down the street you’d scream.

      • Anonymous

I think she’s been photoshopped too, but you’d be surprised how many actors, at least, do have enormous heads. They show up better on film, or something. And then their bodies are so skinny, they look like walking bobble-head dolls.

    • Nancy Abrams

I think she is using her eyes to convey a certain message, like maybe knowing or sultry. Smizing would not match the rest of her face or demeanor in this photo.

Also hate the hot pink background.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Hot damn!  She is WERQ’ing it!

  • Anonymous

That woman is sexy. I don’t care what size she is. I think she’s on my I’d Go Gay For Her List. (But is it weird that I think she looks like Naomi Judd?)

Anyway, totally agree with you, T Lo. Background is awful, she looks amazing. WERQ that leopard print, girl!

    • Anonymous

I think it’s the bigger hair.  I also thought Naomi Judd too.  Anyhow, she looks great, pretty and sexy.

    • Anonymous

OMG she does! look like Naomi Judd.  How did that happen

Next time not so cougariffic Cosmo…eh

  • Vaniljekjeks

She is GORGEOUS.  I should start eating more cake.

  • Amy Fee Garner

I’m picturing an azure blue background instead of the hiddy pink.  Still, Cosmo, well done.  Hopefully this issue will sell out, and the industry will take notice that real women don’t mind having real women for role models — in fact, we rather like it!

  • Anonymous

    Yay Cosmo!

  • Anonymous

Gorgeous. The pink is a bit much, but isn’t that Cosmo’s thing?

Like the other minions, I noticed the huge PLUS right across her belly, too.

  • Anonymous

    I love her!!

  • Anonymous

There is NO time when I shouldn’t see Adele naked!

    (fanning self)

  • Anonymous

her makeup looks fabulous, she is so pretty!

  • Anonymous

Ooh Adele — you work that sexy lioness shit — and rep for us curvy girls!

  • Judy_J

I think she looks wonderful, pink background and all.

  • Anonymous

Don’t like.  She’s like 23 years old — it looks like she’s dressed like Mrs. Robinson to me.  She’d kick ass in something sassy, but not so cougar-y (pun not intended).

  • Anonymous

Oh christ, what a tacky dress!! And that Pepto Bismol background — it’s like camp. She is gorgeous + deserves much better.

  • Dennis Coyle

That make up is fantastic?  They made her look like a drag queen!

  • C

So I love Adele. Love her voice, love her body, love love love her (I can’t behind the smoking because it will ruin those awful lungs but hey). But am I the only one who thinks this was clearly photoshopped to make her look smaller?

    • Denny Li

No you are not!  Her body looks tiny on that cover -unless she lost about 30-40 lbs without the media reporting on it.  What surprises me is how few people are actually commenting on this.

      • Anonymous

She has lost quite a bit of weight over the last few years, so I have no idea what size she actually is now.  I’m sure that every single magazine cover you see is photoshopped but I have no idea what about her is photoshopped and to what extent.

        • Catherine Rhodes

I hate photoshopping! All the cover models look so fake, and their faces look downright alien.

        • Denny Li

I’ve been googling her images, and you’re right.  No doubt this is photoshopped, but she is much smaller than when she first hit the scene.  This makes me a bit sad, but it doesn’t surprise me.  To a (wo)man, every single young female celebrity who is even close to average weight, forget heavy, has pared herself down to an “acceptable” size.

          • Rachel Weiser

Be that as that may, I won’t be one to criticize her for losing any weight. I mean there’s a point at which being that heavy is just unhealthy. Going from unheathily overweight to more on the average side isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In a way, it’s like one of those super anorexic celebrities gaining weight. Besides, I don’t want Adele keeling over from a coronary anytime soon. I want her to be around long enough that she can have at least five spectacular farewell tours like Cher.

          • Denny Li

Adele is a grown woman.  She obviously has the right to do whatever she wants with her body -whether or not others approve.  As for her being unhealthy when fat, really?  I wasn’t aware that she had any health problems at that time.  As far as I know it is only now that she has health problems.

          • Anonymous

oh come on! I have to put up with this crap at TLo? I come to TLo to ESCAPE all this bullshit and just enjoy the pretty. Weight =/= health! Fat cells on their own are not health-ravaging demons! End of story! I’m tired of people trying to find an excuse to sideline fatties like me. Even if that wasn’t your intention, subscribing to the whole “well I’m just worried for people’s health!” trope is not helping matters any. Please, if you can acknowledge that you can’t know a skinny person’s health just by looking at them—whether they have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, ulcers, whatever—then I’m sure you can acknowledge the same for fat people.

          • Anonymous

            PREACH, girl!!!

  • Anonymous

Hate the dress, but man is she sexy.

  • Vera

She looks fabulous.  I grew out of Cosmo years ago but taglines still make me chuckle.

  • Anonymous

Huh. Something about her face doesn’t look quite like herself to me. Maybe it’s because I’m so used to seeing her with some sort of bangs…? It’s weirding me out.

  • Anonymous

Adele is a gorgeous, gorgeous woman. No one is doing her justice on these magazines.

  • BerlinerNYC

The pink background may be awful (although it does kinda match my can!), but the leopard+pink color combo is eye-catching, which absolutely moves magazines at the checkout line and the Hudson News.

  • Connie B. Verzak

Has anyone complimented those earrings yet? They rock.

  • Erin

    Love.  Her.

  • Anonymous

    She looks wonderful.

  • Anonymous

    Toooo muuuuuuch bluuuuuuush! Egads.

Otherwise though, she looks gorgeous and those earrings are fab.

  • margaret meyers

“Where’s a muzzle when you need one?”

    That’s quite a headline.

  • Karen

You’re right about the ambarrassing taglines, but good on cosmo for using a real woman for a change and not airbrushing the fuck out of her!

  • Anonymous

She looks like a Judd!  In a good way …and she’s got pointy fingernails, like the old days.  She’s gorgeous and her body makes me feel better about everything because she looks great in it. The dress don’t matter.  I’d love to sit down with her, a couple of joints, a bottle of whiskey and get down to why it’s always good to fall for Mr Wrong.  Really really good.  PLUS — Is being too nice holding you back?

  • Catherine Rhodes

I love this cover and will make a point to buy it at the newsstands to show support for “real women.” I even like the pink background.

I’m curious how they keep coming up with 100 sex tips each issue…

    • Anonymous

And they’ve been coming up with 100 sex tips since the 1960s!

  • Anonymous

I have such a girl crush on her…..

  • Judy S

She is so gorgeous. My only thought on her “size” is that she doesn’t look scary thin like most gals on a cover. Just the deluxe model.

  • Anonymous

Love Adele, love her voice. Very sad that she’s here in Boston for surgery on her vocal cords. She’s got really bad trouble – hemmorhaging. There was a big article in today’s paper on the dangers young singers face in today’s music industry. I hope she comes through it okay.

  • Anonymous

That little smirk on her face says, “I just farted, and nobody knows…yet.” Love it.

  • Bellybama

She looks like a drag queen! What’s going on with her face?

I swear, I get more of a “I really don’t trust my gynecologist… Are they salad tongs?!” than a “Come-hither” from that cover…

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

Leopard skin and hot pink oh Cosmo, you never leave us wanting for the tacky. Adele looks awesome.

  • Anonymous

LUV HUH, truly, luv huh.  She looks fab.

  • Rachel Weiser

Oh my god she looks fantastic. Gorgeous girl.

  • Anonymous

    LOVE it, she looks great!

  • Pinup Ghoul

She always looks so, so gorgeous. I’ve never seen an unattractive picture of her.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I love that her hair ISN’T huge for once. Not that she doesn’t always look fabulous when it is, it’s just nice that they switched it up a bit. She looks fantastic.

  • Rand Ortega

She’s the ultimate sundae: rich, creamy, a little nutty & always enough to keep you satisfied.

  • Anonymous

Like or dislike that dress, she is werqing that hair/make up/cleavage so hard, I’m ridiculously jealous.

  • Hannah Penfield

Her skin looks like it’s super-Photoshopped here, but the thing is her skin is so amazing it always looks Photoshopped. She has some of the most amazing skin I have ever seen.

  • Ashleigh Boutelle

I wish you had put both covers in this blog…you’re so right.

  • Anonymous

Hot pink? Really? Almost killed what is an otherwise smashing cover (minus the god-awful taglines).

  • StirringSavannah

and i love that the tagline for her doesn’t say anything about her looking sexy ‘for her size.’ it’s great that they didn’t go there.

  • Duygu

I love Adele and I love the cover (except for the Barbie background) but her pointy fingernails are creeping me out….

  • Anonymous

i just love her.  i also love her style.  one fab girl.

  • Tina

She  looks so saucy! Perfect for cosmo.

    Stitching in Circles

  • Anonymous

Now that someone has mentioned it, I see the Judd family resemblance, but first I was seeing Kylie Minogue. Gorgeous and talented lady, but look at those nice straight lines on her waist and the smoothness of her hips. I call Photoshop.

  • Anonymous

lol her jawline is so photoshopped I can’t even laugh that hard at it. I mean, sure, this ( ) is from february and a lot can change in a few months, especially at her age, but it takes a LOT of weight loss to get rid of chin fat, more than she’s been photoshopped into looking like on this cover. I speak from experience.

  • Elizabeth Hunter

The pink background IS awful, but she looks amazing.

  • ecallaw

Yes, except that they made her quite slimmer than she is.  She sure is gorgeous.

  • Susan Foster

She has a stunning face but for some reason I’m just not feeling this cover.  It looks awkward.

  • Miss_Fury

    goodness, she is gorgeous.

  • theneva

That’s a hideous dress and that tacky pink background is going to give me a hangover, but Adele is working the shit out of it anyway. Is there a photo spread inside or just an article?

(Now if only my girl Beth Ditto could get a few more covers, or at least covered here more often…)

  • Anonymous

The dress is horrid, but she still looks gorgeous. I love those earrings with her complexion and hair color and wish they had put her in something nicer. It’s D&G but it may as well be Kardashian.

  • Usama Hamayun

I am actually feeling tht print on her…although she is looking amazing from her above her face but tht dress is very ‘hooker’ish.
