“A Tribute to Pedro Almodovar” Red Carpet

Posted on November 17, 2011

Yesterday we highlighted two of the attendees of this event, the Museum of Modern Art’s 4th Annual Film benefit, “A Tribute to Pedro Almodovar” in New York City, but since so many ladies really brought it to the red carpet, we’re gonna run down a few more.

Chloe Moretz in Chanel

Chanel Spring 2011 Couture Collection/Model: Julia Johansen (ELITE)

Glittery pants under a tunic is never going to look anything but Liza to us, but we think she manages to make the look young and sweet. We don’t love it, but we’re okay with it on her and we support her ongoing experimentation.

Miranda Kerr in Peter Pilotto

Peter Pilotto Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Alana Zimmer

That is not an easy dress to pull off, but the girl’s managing. The hair’s a bit severe, but the dress pretty much calls for it.

Drew Barrymore (and Will Kopelman) in Chanel

Chanel Fall 2011 Couture Collection/Model: Karmen Pedaru (ELITE)

Damn, girl. Love your accessory. We like the dress, but we don’t think the short-sleeved tuxedo jacket actually helps it in any way.

Elizabeth Olsen in Chanel

Chanel Fall 2009 Couture Collection/Model: Alina Kozelkova (METROPOLITAN)

She looks fantastic until you get to that hem.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel

Chanel Resort 2012 Collection/Model: Bianca Balti (IMG)

Is this working for anyone else, the whole coat-vest thing? Why do sleeveless coats even exist?

I’m not liking that that red band on Elizabeth Olsen’s dress.  It doesn’t help with the rectangular torso that the dress gives her.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Agreed. Makes her look square, AND it’s somehow both childish and matronly. Waists at that height only really work with looser-fitting dresses, Regency-style.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

You nailed it with “childish and matronly”. Also, that hem!

        • Anonymous

That hem is making my head hurt.  I guess I should be happy she doesn’t dress like a hobo like her sisters have been wont to do.

    • Anonymous

I agree, something about that (or maybe the additional fabric detail under the bust that you can see on the model but not so much on her) is making her look thick at the waist–which she is not.

      • Alisa Rivera

Actually, I think she is thick-waisted. She has kind of a square body shape. The dress doesn’t help.

        • Anonymous

I guess you’re right, I just never noticed it much before. But this dress seems to do her no favors in this regard. She can look much curvier.

To answer your question, TLo, sleeveless coats were invented exclusively for the use of Bea Arthur in “Maude”.
Sorry Sarah, this SO doesn’t work for you.

    • Anonymous

But you know—it worked on Bea Arthur.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Sure did, and that was also 30 plus years ago.

      • Anonymous

Yes, but Bea Arthur would have taken out anyone who said it didn’t.

        • Anonymous

can I double like that comment?

    • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly – how could Sarah usurp such a signature look and think we wouldn’t notice.  Humph.

  • Anonymous

Sleeveless coats: for when your chest is freezing and your arms are burning up.  Because that happens all the time.

    • Anonymous

I asked my mother. She says that doesn’t even happen during menopause.

    • Anonymous

She looks like she threw it on over her nightgown to get the paper out of the driveway.

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

I’m just not sure what that “coat” is supposed to be accomplishing. It certainly doesn’t keep her warm and it definitely does not enhance the dress. This look needs to be filed under What Was She Thinking?

  • Anonymous

That SJP vest thing is hideous.

Why does Chloe Mortez have a flower in her armpit?

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

      That’s what I was wondering.

    • Anonymous

On the model, it is right over her boob, in the middle of the bow. Maybe they moved it so people wouldn’t be staring at a 14 yo’s boob? I think they should have taken it off. It looks bad shoved in her arm pit.

      • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

It actually looks like it fell off, and she did shove it in her arm pit, so she wouldn’t lose it. Strange.

      • Anonymous

Right. I see it on the model and I understand moving it, but in this photo it looks like a growth. Nasty.

      • Anonymous

Looks like they raised the neckline for her so the flower wouldn’t have even been on her boob.  They should have just left it where it was!

      • BerlinerNYC

I was just going to post to say how I think it actually classed it up to not have a boob-flower. The way the model wore it was a little… literal.

    • charlotte

And does she never have to go to school?

      • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

probably schooled one on one by a private teacher, like many child actors

      • BerlinerNYC

There was a blind item on Gawker yesterday, and a lot of the commentariat was convinced it was about her. It was NOT good. Even if it’s just made up, that means someone’s publicity team is out to get her, and a lot of people are willing to believe it’s her (and do the research to find out she was the only teenager at the event).

      Armpit Tribble.

      • Anonymous

Good thing I wasn’t drinking anything when I read that!

  • MilaXX

I like all of these looks. Elizabeth Olsen was okay except for the red fish tail/mullet. Both Drew and SJP ruined their looks with bad jacket choices.

    • Rand Ortega

MilaXX said… “Both Drew and SJP ruined their looks with bad jacket choices”.
Affectionately known hereafter as (ala VPL) “BJC”.

  • Anonymous

Oooh, that Pilotto dress Kerr is wearing is to die for. That is the winning look of all of these, as far as I’m concerned.

Moretz’s outfit isn’t great, but she’s young enough to get away with it. Although, they should have just removed that flower instead of moving over near her armpit. Looks like she has a wad of tissue in her pit.

Olsen and Barrymore are almosts, and Parker is a no. Like the dress in theory, but can’t really see it under that ridiculous vest.

  • R. L.

SJP’s vest-thingie looks like something she borrowed from a passer-by.  Yuck.  I usually love her but I think the color of her dress is blah and the vest-thingie is out of place.

  • Anonymous

Does a short sleeve tuxedo jacket ever help, in any way?

    • Anonymous

It helps me feel better about my own fashion choices!

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Not that there’s any doubt about the answer, but NO.

  • Anonymous

Most important things first:  Isn’t it nice to see the attendees standing in front of a wall of roses instead of a plastic tarp labeled BUDWEISER or JP MORGAN CHASE or what-the-hell-ever?

Miranda Kerr looks *stunning* in that dress. It’s accessorized just right. Kudos to her!

    Mullet hems:  Go. Thefuck. AWAY!

Drew:  I just love her to pieces, especially when she does something crazy, like dying her hair yellow and black when she wears a yellow and black dress.  So I’m sorry to see her toning it down.  That jacket is right off the Marshall’s CLEARANCE rack and ruins the look of that amazing dress.  Honey, where’d you hide your fingerless, elbow-length lace gloves?  Cause I know you own a pair!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I’m so on board with you Inforapenny, about the corporate wall thing.  So tired.  We all KNOW who is sponsoring this stuff. Is it really needful to jam it into our eyeballs every second?  Like that sort of blitzkrieg is gonna make me want their stuff more. (um yeah, right)

      • Anonymous

Honestly, my kilty friend–does everything in the world have to be plastered with corp crap?  Because nothing sets off a couture gown like placing it on a beautiful actress in front of a wall advertising beer.  It throws off the aesthetic of the whole world.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Well, one thing is clear. Neither I nor any of my Gay Brothers had anything whatever to do with that trend.  For if we had it would never have come to pass.  And think what the actors must feel like.  “Yep, I’m just a piece of movable advertizing for these putzes who are sponsoring this crap.”

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Amen. TO EVERYTHING. Like you’ve read my mind LOL!

      • Anonymous

Sara, I recall a post you wrote recently that was exactly what I was thinking.  *Cue the spooky music!*

    • Anonymous

Yeah, in other red carpet pics, I can hardly see the clothing against those NASCAR-esque backdrops.

And Barrymore took an interesting dress right into Mother of the Bride territory with that jacket, didn’t she?

    • Anonymous

I’m loving the flower wall, it’s so lush and beautiful, a perfect backdrop.

    • Anonymous

YES, Marshall’s clearance rack! lmao! I saw the pic and I’m thinking “why is Drew wearing a “I’m the Assistant Manager of the Misses Department” jacket on the red carpet?

  • Anonymous

Chloe keep on experimenting, you look sweet.  I’m not sure an adult could wear that outfit as shown on the runway.Drew does have the best accessory.Elizabeth Olsen is beautiful but she’s dressing as if she’s 35.  She’s reminding me of young Kathleen Turner. The vest is atrocious.

    • Anonymous

It’s hard to remember the young Kathleen Turner. I hope Elizabeth Olsen fares better than that in the aging department.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

The only one I like is Miranda. HATE SJP and Elizabeth Olsen looks. REALLY hate the Elizabeth Olsen look. A lot.

  • mitchell settoon

elizabeth olsen—bad news.  Count Dracula has just woken up and is pissed, and i mean pissed, at what you’ve done to his cape.

    • Anonymous

LOL Like the very first episode of Project Runway Transylvania: the clothes off your back challenge!

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

This week, designers, you will find a coffin in front of you.  You must create a wearable look from the lining of the coffin, and you may use any other parts of it as embellishments if you wish.

        • Anonymous

Thank you all for the best laugh of the day so far.

  • Anonymous

The Chanel dress seems hard to wear, and I like it more dressed-down like the model and far less when it is dressed-up like Parker is wearing it.  Plus the sleeveless long coat thing is not good addition.

  • Anonymous

Sleeveless coats remind me of my mom, her sisters, and my grandmother in the 1970s. Wearing housecoats that they could stash their ciggies and matches in. Not a good memory.
And I need to go to IMDB, because WHO is Chloe Moretz? She’s everywhere, but I don’t know her.

    • Anonymous

She was one of the “superheroes” in Kick-Ass. Which is a pretty awesome movie, by the way.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6TDAYXK555ABAKZEEOAJMC25FU Stan

God’ll get you for that Sarah Jessica.  And then there’s Maude.

  • Rand Ortega

    SJP: 2 words. Maude. Finlay.

    • Anonymous

That is exactly what I thought when I saw her; SJP you are too young to channel Maude – snap out of it!!

  • http://twitter.com/1carmelita 1carmelita

Dear Miranda Kerr, I love your shoes.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

It seems to me that skirts cut like Elizabeth Olsen’s are universally unflattering on people’s knees. Am I the only one?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ailsa-Martin/644946901 Ailsa Martin

Why are they all wearing Chanel except one, please, somebody? It’s not a Chanel event, right, because Miranda isn’t. And she looks by far the best. So I guess what I’m saying is, hey Karl: Step it up.

    • Anonymous

Ugh, IMO, Unkle Karl -Chanel- is still protected in an “emperor’s new clothes” sort of way, but he’ll soon need to change it up and stop pulling those looks out of his ass.

Those glittery pants would have been much better if they fit a bit tighter.

      • Anonymous

I think they fit her legs perfectly; too-tight like leggings would not fall well. They’re way too loose on the runway model, though.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

That short-sleeved tuxedo jacket makes Drew Barrymore look a little matronly. As someone who is merely two years younger than me, I hereby declare that she is not allowed to look matronly for another 20 years. At least.

  • Anonymous

SJP is just messing with us now.

  • Anonymous

SJP looks pretty good IF you remove the coat –and forgive the ubiquitous khol surrounded eyes.  But the sleeveless-coat-in-heavy-fabric-with-diaphanous-gown is wrong on multiple levels.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know how I overlooked Ms. Kerr.  That’s a fantastic dress on her.

  • Anonymous

Oh my.  SJP looks hiddy.  The hair that accentuates her high forehead.  The dress that is giving her granny boobs.  The Maude vest.  FAIL.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

    Re: Elizabeth Olsen
I am just never going to be interested in this girl. Blah, blah. NEXT!

  • Anonymous

Gawd, SJP looks awful. What a schmatta look. I could have styled her better. My MOTHER could have done it better. Hey, SJP, my mom lives in Manhattan. Give her a call.

Meanwhile, Miranda Kerr look FIERCE.  That’s  WERQ.

  • Anonymous

That sleeveless vesty coaty thing is ridiculous. But her hair looks lovely, which should make a lot of people happy.

  • Anonymous

what is with SJP lately?….rich hipster meets bag lady?…..time to start dressing your age.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

Miranda Kerr looks reptillian. In a good way.

  • Anonymous

C’mon, American actresses. That li’l Australian hussy is miles ahead of you.

  • Anonymous

Sarah Parker should have identified her look by now, and this is not it.

  • Anonymous

“Tlo said: Why do sleeveless coats even exist?”

I don’t know, but I assume they were invented by the same guy who invented open-toe boots.

But beyond that, isn’t it nice to see a step and repeat without all the logos? I’m loving the roses.

Moretz: As much as I love those glittery pants (hell, I want them for myself!), I almost wish she had worn only the top as a dress. The outfit as is looks a little mature for her.
Kerr: Pulling that shit off as only a model can.
Barrymore: I love this bitch and I just can’t ding her. I do agree about the jacket, though.
My Favorite Olsen: Yeah, that hem kind of has a Dracula’s cape vibe to it. She does look very pretty, though. I just love that she smiles. I wish her sisters would smile instead of looking like zombies all the time.
SJP: Let’s all ambush her and tear that dreadful “coat” off her and burn it. Who’s in?

  • Anonymous

Cute top on Chloe except for some reason the flower accessory is under her left armpit.

  • Anonymous

How can a tiny girl like Elizabeth Olsen look thick through the middle? I think the placement of the belt is doing her no favors.

Drew: Helen Mirren called. She wants her outfit back.

    • MilaXX

Drew: Helen Mirren called. She wants her outfit back.
That’s exactly what I thought when I saw that look. The jacket makes it far too mature looking.

    • Anonymous

Helen Mirren would never wear that dowdy old thing.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I actually LOVE the hem on Elizabeth Olsen — and normally I’m totally with you on the mullet hems.  It makes the dress more interesting.

And I like sleeveless coats… when they’re vests, like they’re supposed to be and when they fit.  SJP’s does neither, really, which is a shame because the dress is lovely.

  • Anonymous

Still love the Wall O’ Roses!

  • Anonymous

Sorry Drew, you look like the Accounting Administrator out on a date.

  • Anonymous

After seeing the man candy Drew brought, I couldn’t even notice anything else. HOT DAMN.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I have a feeling that anyone older than Chloe Moretz would look ridiculously old in that outfit, but she is so young she comes off as lamb dressed as lamb.
You guys are always talking about the joy of being young and making nutty clothing choices. SJP’s outfit would look cute on Hailee Steinfeld, wouldn’t it? The teenage smile kind of excuses it but….

  • Pam Winters

    I like coat vests, but I’m a middle-aged hippie.

Don’t like the proportions on SJP.

What’s the deal with Chloe? She’s got some kind of magic proportions that make her look great in looks that would fail on others.

Oh, Drew…no. Yet the original, as styled on the model, looks like it would suit her–sort of young eccentric dowager-goddess-to-be. That damn jacket is a no. I bet she’s got a hangup about her shoulders/upper arms. (I do as well, but that sleeve length makes it even worse.)

  • Anonymous

I remember the days when Drew would’ve looked as cracked-out as the model does in that dress.

I kinda like the tuxedo jacket.  Dunno why — maybe I just appreciate that she looks rather classy and put-together (and dare I say, HAPPY?).

I should normally HATE that zipper-looking dress thing, but I have agree, Miranda Kerr is pulling it off.

  • Anonymous

SJP forgot to take off her housecoat before heading out for the evening.

  • Anonymous

I think that Cloe Moretz outfit has a bizarre age range.  On the one hand, the very young. But also the very, very old (with some kind of sleeve, naturally).  I could really see Iris Apfel in that (on one of her calmer days).

  • Anonymous

sleeveless coats exist so Anya can knock them off.  OH SNAP.

  • Anonymous

SJP’s outfit looks incongruous with the pointy-toed shoes she’s wearing – she should have gone for the sandals that the model is wearing.  And taken off the jacket, as so many other have pointed out.

Drew looks all grown up and mature in her photo – and I’m not sure I like that!

    • margaret meyers

      She looks matronly.

  • Anonymous

Why is nearly everyone wearing Chanel?

  • Anonymous

I love SJP sans jacket thingie.  Does Chloe even know who Almodovar is?  She’s not old enough to watch his films, so I wonder. I hope she’s not another Lohan in the making.  She is literally at every red carpet right now.  Perhaps she’s been cloned. (Chloe-ned?)

  • Anonymous

Who IS Chloe Moretz?  I keep seeing her on your blog but have never seen her anywhere else.  She always looks to me like she’s sucking on a lemon.

    • http://orangtunes.blogspot.com BIG MAC

Shes known for a lot of recent movies. I think Kick Ass is what boosted her fame tremendously. Shes only like 14 though, and thee way she dresses and carries herself makes her look a lot older.

      • Anonymous

She needs to get that puss off her face.

  • Anonymous

Will Kopelman…drool….must google him now.  lol.

Elisabeth Olsen hasn’t looked better than this to date…I don’t mind the asymmetrical hem in this instance.SJP…ditch the ridiculous sleeveless vest/coat and she looks good. for a change.

I really like Chloe and Miranda’s outfits too…different and stylish without being over the top.

Dang though if Drew doesn’t win the round with that accessory…drool some more…

Am I the only one who thinks the Sane Olsen looks like a boxy Dracula from the neck down?

Generally speaking, this Chanel collection is all horrible.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25500124 Eric Jacobs

SJP is reading a little “elementary school art teacher”…and not in the good way (what is the good way…)…??

Someone please tell me who Chloe Moretz is – I’m clueless.  In more ways than one I know, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in a movie or TV show.  Love her outfit thought.

  • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

I’m sorry – but why the fuck would you ruin CHANEL with an oversized blazer-vest? (Blest? Vlazer?)

  • Aiste Griciute

Elizabeth Olsen’s dress makes her top half seem bulky and why  is SJP always cold?

  • http://profiles.google.com/hillaryschuster Hillary Schuster

re: SJP – I just think that jacket looks so out of sync with the dress (which looks whoa-terrible on it’s own). there’s an adorbs fashion blogger I follow who has a sleeveless jacket and rocks the crap out of it. here’s one example: http://atlantic-pacific.blogspot.com/2011/11/shades-of.html

  • Anonymous

I haven’t seen any of her work, but Chloe Moretz has been a lot of fun to look at on T-Lo. She’s has the guts to try looks that are not “standard starlet glam,” and she’s cute and poised enough to pull off most of them. Her handlers seem to be doing their job well.  Miranda Kerr’s print dress is exceptional, but I’m not sure I’ll like it next year. (That’s not my problem, or hers for that matter, is it?) SJP’s dress, without the sleeveless coat, is pretty but seems too formal for this event. The bottom of her hair is nice, but what’s with the bump on top?

  • Cathy S

Why’s SJP wearing Bea Arthur’s vest?

I am only okay with sleeveless coats in the context of badass cyberpunk looks. Think The Matrix, but updated to be less shiny.

SJP, Maude called, and said stay the hell out of her closet.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    UGH.  Shut up SJP.

  • Modern Belle

My first reaction at seeing Elizabeth Olsen was, “What is Meghan McCain doing at a fashion event?” I imagine that is a comparison Ms. Olsen would not want. I like the idea of the dress, but it does make her look wider than she really is.

  • Anonymous

Miranda Kerr killed. She looks the best by far. Drew B.’s accessory IS rather nice. SJP WTH?

  • Anonymous

While she still looks stunning (as if she ever wouldn’t) Miranda Kerr looks more pregnant in that dress than she ever did when she actually was preggo.

  • Anonymous

Sleeveless coat definitely not working for me, and not with that dress….

  • Anonymous

Love seeing Drew B., but short-sleeved tuxedo jackets are against my religion.

I want to know what kind of pact Miranda Kerr made with the devil–to have a baby and still be able to model for VS.

Once again, I have taste issues.  I like the concept of a sleeveless jacket (I want one).  But it needs to be over something with sleeves.  And not a gown.

why is sarah jessica parker wearing a nightgown? i keep looking at it waiting for it to become sheer. it isnt sheer, though, though somehow it should be. it’s just weird. & that thing on top it is a coat, you say?

i like the pilotto. the extra olson was not well served by that hem, agreed.

Even at ehr peak best, Liza wouldn’t have looked as cute as Chloe does in that outfit.  It’s very, very cute on her.  Drew should have skipped that jacket but her face looks fantastic.  And her date should have skipped his jacket as well.  And short… and pants….
SJP, why do you make ti so hard for those of us who love you defend you?  I love the dress but “then there’s Maude”….
