Zoe Saldana in Jason Wu

Posted on October 13, 2011

Such is the power of the Saldana that she can routinely get us to like things we normally don’t like.

Last month, she got us to give the thumbs up on a pair of shoes that matched her dress exactly. We still feel the shame. And damn her fabulousness, this time around she’s got us thinking that a pair of ankle strap silly putty platforms pumps were just what this look needed. Let us reiterate:

Ankle straps

Silly Putty colored

Platform pumps

That’s the trifecta of Things T Lo Bitches About Most Often in Ladies Footwear. How does this fabulous bitch do it? Is she doing it on purpose? Is she giving T Lo the finger? What did we ever do to you, Zoe? Why must you taunt us so with your fierceness?

Love the shoes! And I think that the fact that they contrast with colour of her skin helps a lot.

    • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

This is SO true.  The silly putty looks dumb on pale people, but it looks more like a COLOR on someone with darker skin.

    • p. clementine

It also pulls out the pink accents in the dress.

Take a second look them in the morning.  They are still pretty bad.  Particularly in the head on photo.  The only slightly redeeming feature is that they contrast with her skin tone.

They sort of say “demure stripper” to me.

      • Anonymous

I agree. Plus she is too skinny. Looks like her shoes are too big for her

Julia Roberts: meet Zoe Saldana. Zoe Saldana: meet Julia Roberts.

Ms. Roberts, here is a pencil and a pad of paper.

Write down everything Ms. Saldana says about fashion. You can thank me later.

    • Anonymous

Oh lord, Scotty, not even in her wildest dreams–and not even with advice from the oracle herself– could Julia pull off a Saldana.

    • Anonymous

Oh Scotty, it’s REALLY hard to take notes with your head so firmly up your own ass, don’t you know?

      • Rand Ortega

        HA!
        Dayum…

      Preach.

she’s perfect. i want this dress and the shoes. i’d wear a different belt though– looks like she borrowed it from a tiny security guard.

TLo said: “How does this fabulous bitch do it?”

TampaBay says: THE BITCH HAS STYLE in SPADES because she knows WHAT WORKS FOR HER!

    IN!!!! plus WERQ to boot!

Those hideous shoes (on the model) again.  Ugh.

The dress is eye-catching, she didn’t need bright shoes.  I really don’t mind them, either, and I normally would hate them.

  • Anonymous

Zoe Saldana could wear a pair of Skechers with flashing lights and still look amazing. But what do you think of the Jason Wu dress?

  • Anonymous

I wonder if those pumps are pink, to pick up what might be pink (beigy pink) in the dress. Hard to tell on both counts.
I know she’s very thin, but is she looking scrawny here?

  • Anonymous

This is the proper deployment of Silly Putty pumps – ankle strapped, platformed or otherwise. Love the fact that the fish-tailiness of the model version was curtailed in the Zoe version. Girl is fierce.

    • Anonymous

ha said opposite thing about the hemline. As my grandma used to say, “That’s what makes horse races!”.

  • http://profiles.google.com/angelarosesarno angela rose sarno

what if it were true that Zoe is taunting you with her fierceness?  We could get a camera crew and follow both sides.  THAT is a bravo show worth watching.

  • Anonymous

    This is absolutely adorable.

The Saldana, lol. Added to The Swinton, The Blanchett or is it Winslet (I always get them confused ;), The von Teese, and I would add, The ERW, but never, the Gaga or the Madonna.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

You mean Blanchett.  I love Winslet ‘long time’ but she is wearing everything a skosh too tight these days.

    • Anonymous

SWINTON has no “the.” SWINTON is beyond the power of articles. She is only SWINTON.

      • Anonymous

        Thanks. I stand corrected.

  • Anonymous

the dress was a lot more fabulous before someone futzed with the hemline, downgrading it from funky to unremarkable. agree about the shoes. silly putty pumps (ankle strap or not) happen to work just right. how often can TLo or anyone else say that?

  • Anonymous

I think it’s the contrast to her skin tone that makes these shoes acceptable, as has been noted. They look more intentional.

  • Terence Ng

Where does Silly Putty end and Light Pink begin?

    • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

We used to call it Face Powder – as in that pinkish beige of old Coty compacts of pressed powder.

  • Anonymous

I don’t really like the dress with her skin tone and the belt looks a tad too chunky. IN LOVE with the hair and makeup though! This is the chic version of the “messy look” that so many stars attempt but never get right.

  • Anonymous

I was one of the very few along with you last month…and I’m with you again on this look.  She is so NOT typical of all the other starlets schlepping along the RC…she has an innate sense of style…knows what the hell she’s doing and gets it right way more often than not.

She looks great here.  The shoes work because they compliment the colors in the dress as well do not blend in with her skin tones.

I’m not crazy about her hair here…but it is well styled and controlled.

  • Anonymous

Yah, she’s pretty fierce. That’s a super-cute dress and she’s working it. I would normally be all, what’s up with that crooked hair?? But here I think it works with the breezy casual thing she has going on. The shoes do work. I personally like ankle straps, as long as they’re thin; I hate the ones that look like shackles.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Zoe is the exception to every rule. Love her.

  • Joseph Davidson

I actually feel the opposite way about these shoes on Zoe, and about the nude pumps/platforms trend in general.  I don’t mind a nude shoe when it’s completing an outfit that can stand on it’s own (that has a few interesting design elements in-and-of itself), because then the nude shoe serves as a kind of palette cleanser.  It’s not good, it’s not bad, it’s just anchoring the look. But when you’re wearing a relatively simple and short dress, like the one Zoe has on, you need a more interesting shoe in order to balance yourself out.  Right now there’s too much going on on top and not enough on bottom.  She kind of looks like she’s about to fall forward because there’s nothing holding her to the ground.

I did not know until just this second that I cared (or knew) so much about nude shoes.  Low point.

  • Jessica Rowe

it’s her colouring.  wouldn’t work on a white white girl.  no way.

  • Anonymous

zoe is a fashion BEAST, hear the bitch roar!

  • Maria Acosta Cruz

Gentlemen, you have a serious crush on this gorgeous creature.

  • Anonymous

Maybe it’s my monitor, but these shoes look pale pink to me, which accents the flowers in the dress. I like the shoes on Zoe better than the pink purse on the model.

  • Anonymous

Ballerina girl Zoe can pull off looks that most mere mortals, and many in the Hollywood Pantheon, can’t.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Not to mention the fact that the dress, as worn on the runway, wouldn’t have even garnered a second look from me. How does she do it indeed!  Although I still can’t get behind those shoes.
I’m with Angela Rose and think that Zoe taunting you would make an excellent show on Bravo!

  • Judy_J

She’s uber-fierce!  Love that dress, and I think the shoes are the perfect compliment to that beautiful dress.  Perfection all around.

  • Anonymous

Those shoes are pretty bleh, guys.  I would have liked them better in silver or grey.

    LOVE the dress, though!

  • Anonymous

I think it helps to have legs a mile long, even before you put on the platforms. What a lovely dress; I even forgive the slight mullet in the hem.

Halle Berry has some competition. Gorgeous!

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

You make my day with your commentary!!

  • Anonymous

She looks great. Love the dress–it’s so floaty!–and the shoes. Also the fact that she looks happy to be there.

  • Anonymous

there is something special about that girl

  • Anonymous

I don’t care for the shoes. I don’t hate them, but not totally digging them either. Not that they ruin the look, though. I think she looks freaking amazing, as usual.

  • Anonymous

To be fair, silly putty has a completely different effect when it isn’t a near-match for the skin.

  • Anonymous

Plus the skirt hem is longer in back and still she looks amazing and I would not change a thing.  Poor T & Lo.

  • Anonymous

This is the dress made for shoes like that. The only dress.

  • Anonymous

She does look outstanding and I love, love, love that dress. It works better in the brown and (soft pink?) than the runway version. J’adore!

  • Anonymous

Like the dress, but I still can’t get behind those shoes (nor would I want to, they could do some serious damage).  Look at those shoes in the last picture; they are just ridiculously high.

  • Anonymous

And what a perfect look for spectating at a polo match, too.  Sigh.  I hate her.

  • Anonymous

The lady is whippet-thin and knows exactly what works for her slim build. This froth of a dress is so pretty on her.

  • Anonymous

to paraphrase that awful movie from my youth “…fierce is the word, is the word, is the word, is the word, it’s groove it’s got meaning”

I’m not sure who’s more fierce today Zoe or Dita?

  • http://profiles.google.com/thekate Kate Musgrove

She really does look fabulous. Damn her!

  • MilaXX

Dang it! I thought it was your crush speaking, but she looks good.

  • Anonymous

Love her to bits, seriously hate the Pole Dancer shoes.

  • Sara__B

It would have been even better with different shoes. The fabulous Ms. Saldana looks as good as it’s possible to look in those shoes, but still…

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

She’s always an IN for me!

  • Anonymous

Very pretty. If the shoes were the same color as her skin tone it would be so much worse. As it stands the shoes are just okay. But the rest is lovely.

  • Anonymous

I just love this woman!  She’s smart, she’s riddled with talent, and she looks fabulous 99.9% of the time.  Which makes me tired just thinking about it.  The Jason Wu dress is perfect for her, and she looks lovely in these pictures.

     However.

TLo may forgive the shoes, but I won’t. Putty-colored shoes with a black-and-white dress?  No.  Never. No.

  • Anonymous

Hate the shoes, but that girl can rock just about anything. What a lovely dress.

  • Anonymous

Mybe she gets away with the shoes because she has the LEGS OF DEATH.  Seriously girl, you’re giving us all whiplash!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CJ2DQZARBUBUUGHOQAHU4JVULI Heather

Easy Breezy… are we sure this isn’t an ad for “Cover Girl”? I think she looks GREAT. I’m glad she kept the collar open.

  • Anonymous

I hate the shoes on principle.  Even though women of color look far better in silly putty shoes.  I can’t do it.  That dress is lovely, though!!

  • Anonymous

There are no words, only applause.

  • Jessica O’Connell

    She looks FABULOUS.

  • Anonymous

Fabulous! This is WERQ-worthy. It is not only because she is so fashion-forward that she can pull off the shoes but because she is soooo slim.

    • Anonymous

wanna feed her a burger.  or cheesecake.  or something else she probably never eats.  in person she would be scary skinny.

  • Anonymous

Hee hee. Yes, I’m chuckling at you T Lo, but with lots of love. You know I worship you both as demigods!

  • Anonymous

They are “nude” for a white person.

  • Anonymous

She sort of has a Christina Ricci look about her.  In a good way.  Big head, cute figure.  Large eyes, wide forhead, super cute smirk.

    • Anonymous

I wish I could see that because I adore Christina Ricci, but hard as I try I can’t. Unfortunately, to me she looks like Thandie Newton, whom I fervently dislike.

  • Anonymous

And you didn’t even mention the uneven hemline!

  • Lisa

I love it – very breezy and chic.

  • Anonymous

That woman is effing fabulous. Love. Her. And love her absolute geekitude that goes with her sexy gorgeous fabulous and fierce.

  • Anonymous

This young woman is the essence of chic and taste. She really knows what to wear and how to wear it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

I think the fact that the shoes contrast with the color of her legs and, combined with the pinkish polka dots, seem more pink than bleige, is what makes it work.

  • Anonymous

The pumps work because they contrast with her skin.  The equivalent of silly putty pumps on dark skinned women would something that actually matches her flesh.  These exude more of a pink hue next to her skin and pull a pink hue out of the polka dots on the dress.  Ankle straps only work on people with limbs like hers: very skinny.  I have thick ankles, I can never wear an ankle strap.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rachel.council Rachel Council

She just sells it. I don’t even like those shoes, but she’s selling them anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/purpleflamingo4 Natasha Ann

That dress is STUNNING on her! I think we can forgive her for the shoes.

  • Presumptuous Insect

Go, Uhuru!  Any girl that gets to kiss SPOCK is OK with me.

He’s gay, it turns out. But still….

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I actually like it better buttoned to the top.

  • LocMama

I’m distracted by the champagne tucked into the hedges behind her.  That’s bad, right?
    She looks good, too.

  • Anonymous

You guys really ARE drinking the Kool-Aid, aren’t you? ;-)
The shoes are awful. Everything else is lovely.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    Ha ha!  Love!

  • http://www.facebook.com/claudeth.forbin Claudeth Forbin

That’s because the people who generally wear silly putty colored shoes are white and the shoe blends right into their skin.  These shoes contrast nicely with her skin tone, so it doesn’t look bad. Further it picks up a color in the dress, though not the expected dominate dark color, so it looks great.  Zoe is just fierce.

  • MzzPants

The shoes contrast with her skin tone.  And she’s working the hell out of it all.
