Yea or Nay: Prada ‘Galleria’ Bag

Posted on October 19, 2011

Darlings, let’s keep this simple. Much like bridal collections, when it comes to bags, it’s better for us to get the hell out of the way and let the ladies have their say.

Prada presents its new bag  ‘Galleria,’ named after its first store inside Milan’s famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The bag has classic lines and comes in saffiano, crocodile and ostrich leather in several colors. Behold:

Personally, we think they’re gorgeous. Expensive, to be sure, but you can’t go wrong investing in a bag like this, which will never really go out of style and could conceivably last you decades if you take good care of it and treat it like you gave birth to it.

So the question is posed to you, Lady Kittens:

The Prada Galleria Bag: YEA or NAY?

Opinionated Boy Kittens are, as always, encouraged to express themselves as well. When The Daily Beast talked to us last week about the rise of the man purse, we were asked if we thought men would ever start buying women’s purses in large numbers. We have a hard time believing such a thing will happen. As the male market for accessories expands, the manufacturers are more likely to aggressively market male-oriented bags to their male customer base rather than relying on them to start buying purses.

        Yeah. Naturally.

Hard to go wrong with classic and simple. YEA.

Nay – nothing here catches me eye.

      • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

I’m underwhelmed as well. This seems like a throwback to the plain, minimalist Prada bags of the mid-90’s. DAMN does this mean mini backpacks are coming back as well?!??!!!

        • Cheri Lee

Bite your tongue! No mini backpacks ever again!!!

        • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I LIKE my Skechers, but I LOVE my Prada backpack.

          • Anonymous

LMAO love that movie. Alas, I also don’t have a Prada backpack.

            • Michele Forney

I know you can be overwhelmed and underwhelmed, but can you ever be just whelmed?

            • Anonymous

I think you can in Europe.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

Absolutely beautiful…but it totally reminds me of a Birkin bag.

Seriously gorgeous though. Maybe I need to be sent one to really form my opinion.

      • Anonymous

My first thought. Not that the Birkin is a wholly original shape, but it’s iconic now and if I was an accessories designer I’d stay as far away from reminding people of it as I could.

      • Anonymous

I immediately thought the same thing, but that doesn’t make me like it any less.  I tend to like simple and this fits the bill.  How long til Pippa Middleton is photographed with one on her arm?

      • Now I am The Bee

It does look like a Birkin shape.  But at a fraction of the price–these are perfect!

      • Anonymous

I agree! I definitely get a Birkin vibe from the bag too. Pretty bags, though. Quite classic.

    • http://twitter.com/graykeller gray keller

      EW, yuck

    • http://profiles.google.com/embersonfire ember beasley

give me the mint green on now please. love love love.

      • Anonymous

         Me too !  heart !

      • Anonymous

That’s my favourite as well.  Bonus points for the more-hidden side position of the Prada nameplate.

        God, I hate logos.

    • ANDRES CARRILLO

      yea yea yea!

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

LOVE. Love love love. Simple shapes + great colors = perfect.

    • Anonymous

I’m going to start building a nursery for them now. I can’t even decide which one I like the most. So dreamy.

    • Anonymous

I was just in the Milan Galleria two weeks ago, so I’ll say YEA. :)

    • Anonymous

Yay! I’ll take one for Christmas please.

    • Anonymous

The ostrich texture never fails to creep me out and I feel somewhat similar about reptile skins [I have big-time texture issues], but the others are beautiful and the structure is gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

I love me a structured bag and, were I to have the thousands I’m sure these cost (but I’m too lazy to look it up), I could live with the first two, but that blue thing is way ugly and I never liked Ostrich and REALLY don’t like it now that one of your minions explained to me that those bumps are where the rip the feathers out….ARRRRRGH! Wow…queen of run-on sentences there. I guess I’m giving it a 50% YEA.

      • Nora Mulllin

50% Yea is the perfect descriptor. I can live w/o the croc & ostrich but the plain cow/pig is just fine by me!

      • Anonymous

Oh wow. I had no idea about the bumps. Me no likey :(

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Pretty.  They’re nice bags, though I tend to go for flashier and WAY WAY cheaper — I usually wear classic clothing with touches of insanity in the accessories.

      • Anonymous

LOL, “touches of insanity.” But I know what you mean. I love color and pattern, but it often appears in my accessories more than in my basic clothing.

    • http://twitter.com/VeryLivingEND END ESQ

Is it just me, or is every bag a derivative of the Hermes Birkin? That said, I like the first colorway.

      • Anonymous

That was my first thought too. These Prada bags are nice but the Hermes Birkin is so much classier.

      • Anonymous

The Birkin shape has now become as classic (and repeated) as the hobo, the clutch, the saddlebag (a la Coach), the apothecary bag, etc. Doesn’t bother me. It’s a shape with clean lines, but large and roomy enough to be useful.

    • http://twitter.com/sonjamikail sonjamikail

Yay, yay, a thousand times yay! I would trade my first born for the red one. Gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

      i want all of them.

    • Anonymous

I do like the classic look of this bag.

I saw the your quote on The Daily Beast.  I don’t see men in my neighborhood carrying a purse, although my husband does carry a paper (grocery) bag to haul his stuff to work occasionally.  His briefcase is apparently to slim for some stuff.

      • Anonymous

At least your husband uses a bag that can be recycled – mine uses many, many plastic grocery bags (that he brings into the house when he hits the grocery store)

      • Anonymous

        Mine carries a “satchel” (it’s a purse).

        • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

Mine carries a backpack!  It’s also a purse, to which he begrudgingly agrees. :)

    • http://pissiechrissie.tumblr.com/ Chrissie

Yea, I especially like the mint and pink ones.

    • Anonymous

I’m sure they cost more than my car, but I love the blue crocodile one.

      • https://me.yahoo.com/a/dLUE.9h6zdoHMLprP6AQrSQpKt0CZys-#e58b4 tom

I don’t carry a bag but I guess that you and me both drive a 10 yr. old Honda; or at  least something along those lines.

        • Anonymous

          Yep.

    • Anonymous

      Ehh….

Yea on SO many levels. I die for the mint ostrich leather – perfect for spring!

ick, no.  All of these read as tired and uninteresting to me.

    • Anna Maria Diamanti

Want the mint one. Want it want it WANT IT!

But I’d settle for the blue crocodile.

TLo, can’t you guys sponsor a giveaway? For us do-gooder types who work hard but don’t make enough to express our fabulous aesthetic? Pretty please? Make a bitter kitten a happy cat?

      • Lisa

The blue croc is really the only one I like.  But that’s just me – I’m not huge on bright or ice cream/pastel colors on accessories.  But the shade of blue is dark enough that it’s chic and gorgeous!

    • Anonymous

      Yeah. Love them.

I suppose if I have to ask how much they cost I can’t afford it.

But I’d take the blue crocodile or green ostrich in an instant.

    • Anonymous

Oooh, I do want them in every color, but my favorite is the blue crocodile.

    • Anonymous

      It’s a beautiful bag.  I don’t do leather–anyone know of any non-leather great bags?

      • Rand Ortega

Kenneth Cole, Stella McCartney, Kate Spade are the 1’s that immediately spring to mind. Check the PETA website. If I’m not mistaken, they have a link to non leather/fur clothes, shoes & accessories.

        • Anonymous

PETA website is a great idea–thanks for the info.

      • MilaXX

If you want designer I think Stella McCartney bags are vegan. Does Natalie Portman still have her shoe line? They may also sell bags. Sadly all the vegan bags I’ve seen look very etsy shop.

        • Anonymous

Thanks–I’ll check out Stella McCartney.  Problem is $$$!

          • Anonymous

Check out places like Target and Payless, too. I have found some decent and inexpensive faux bags in both places (former vegetarian). :-)

    • Anonymous

Nay.  I like the color of the last two, but those first two are fugly.  The bag itself is boring.  If I’m gonna spend my life savings on a bag it needs to be fabulous.  And capable of manufacturing piles of $100 bills whenever I press that little doodad on that side.

I don’t usually care for Prada, but those are lovely. Very big YEA from me! I love every single one of those colors.   <3

    • Anonymous

Totally Birkinesque, but I love those so the Galleria bag gets a “yea” from me.

I do wish the hardware was silver instead of gold, but I’ll take the pink one anyway – IT’S A GIRL!

    • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

Yea to the blue crocodile, nay to the rest, which I find underwhelming.
I pointed to it and asked my dad if I could put it on my Christmas list. He was wise enough to say “no” without waiting to hear what the brand was.

    • Anonymous

LOVE the mint ostrich.  Wouldn’t turn down the pink-y one, either.  Sigh.  Covet.

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

      Is there a MEH option?

Also, with regard to the mint purse: I’ve always shied away from that leather that looks like the animal had some sort of pox. shudder.

Yea!  The mint ostrich is my fave.

    • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

Well, the fact that the tag/fob has it’s own “pocket” might make this bag a bit too twee, but I do love the mint green ostrich one.  Still, I’m more of the what-can-we-find-at-the-Coach-Outlet mindset, so I don’t think I’ll be plunking down cash for Prada anytime soon.

    • Anonymous

LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I want the top one.

    • CQAussie

They’re gorgeous!  Classic stylings and seems big enough for an every day work bag.  I would buy the red and the pink.  HAHAHAHAHAHA….right after I sell my yet-to-be-conceived firstborn.  And maybe even my second-born.

Not a fan of the croc but maybe it might look nicer in a different colour?  Love the mint green but the ostrich look reminds me of skin….so I’m kinda grossed out by it.

    • Anonymous

      Nay. Dull and done.

    • Anonymous

      yea!  sublime.

    • Geno Boggiatto

      YAY. Classic and beautiful.

    • Anonymous

hmm. I love them but my thought is: isn’t the original technically the Hermes Kelly Bag, not the Birkin? Just wondering.

    • Anonymous

They cause no lust in my breast, but that doesn’t matter – they are classic and no matter how many of our aunts and grandmothers and mothers carried a near-identical bag, eventually many of us will inexplicably need to purchase our own. Blue reptile and mint ostrich look way too gimmicky for this style at this price point, but the others are lovely examples of what they are.

Edited to get to the point: a calm and unexcited YEA.

    • Now I am The Bee

Oh my god YEA! Yes, oui, jawohl, da, however you can say yes.  It’s beautiful and you are right–I would have it forever.  The  red one for sure.

    • Anonymous

I like it. It looks like the bag has a shoulder strap, which is essential. I don’t care for the ostrich–it makes it look like the bag has the measles.

    • Denny Li

The classic shape here is one I often buy, but honestly, without the Prada label, would anyone even look twice at these bags?

    • http://twitter.com/BeantownMrs Praggya R. Barretto

Yes (except for the ostrich one). Ostrich isn’t really my bag, baby.

    • http://twitter.com/vintagegoddess just julie

Since I have no idea how redonkulous the price is I can say me likey very much.
      WANT.

Love, Love, LOVE! The aqua ostrich is gorgeous, but if I were to win Powerball I would probably buy the coral. Gorgeous!

I carry messenger bags because I think they’re queer enough for me. Still, I like these for whatever my perspective is worth, because I think they are playful riff on the kind of thing my grandmother would have dreamed about owning when she was a young girl. There’s something classic about them that I really like, and yet they don’t look like you have to be eighty to have them on your arm.

    • Anonymous

Is it me or am I seeing Birkin bag Redux here?  The purses are super cute, but they really remind me of the Birkin bag

      Oh, that’s a winner.

What is the point of having a handbag if it has to be treated as if I gave birth to it?   I want a handbag to be reasonably nice looking and be my companion day in and day out holding my needed possessions and being comfortable to hold and strong enough to go wherever I go.

And accept that our relationship will last only year or two.

    • http://twitter.com/pag_baj Paige Boerman

      YAY! I want one.

    • http://twitter.com/marared Jaime

I am an atypical female in that I stopped carrying purses in junior high and have virtually no use for bags of any kind – I have a small one-of-a-kind leather/textile mini-backpack from Bolivia that serves as my universal carry-all, and a small cheapie pleather bag that holds my not-pocket-sized camera. That’s it. That said, I really like that poppy red color…

In order from the top: yes, yes, yes, and eww.

I can’t function with a purse that doesn’t have an open outside pocket. But they definitely has the pretty. Love that color pink.

    • Anonymous

I want to make sweet, sweet love to the light pink one. I could never have an expensive purse though…I once spilt buttered rice and chicken in a purse. And my cats sleep in my purse sometimes…

    • Anonymous

Love the Birkin-style design overall, and really love that blue shade. But even if I could afford these, I would have a problem with the exotic leather aspect. :-(

    • Anonymous

      Yay.

    • Anonymous

NAY. Big satchels with long skinny straps have got to be the most uncomfortable, impractical purses out there. I mean, it’s basically just a big boxy briefcase! I don’t like these and I don’t like the Birkin. I have to admit, though, the leather is lovely, I guess if you’re looking for a “status bag,” you can’t go wrong with either of ‘em.

    • Anonymous

Actually, that light pink one reminds me of my grandma. In a totally good way. Want.

I’m fortunate that I don’t have designer taste in purses. The pastels look to me like something my Nana (or 3-year-old me) would have carried on Easter in the mid-70s. I like the blue croc though.

    • Anonymous

Definitely a yea.  The colors are beautiful and the shape is both classic and modern. I don’t care for an ostrich bag, but I love the rest.

That coral bag needs to come to live with me.  Stat.  I don’t like the dark blue so much, but all the rest are a total YEA.

Yea!! Pretty Easter egg colors! I liked that shape when my mother and grandmother had them, and I still like them now. They’re classic and fun — but who can afford fun like that?

Anyhoo, these bags are perfection. The coral would be my number one choice. If this survey gives away two handbags as
‘thanks’ for participating, I’ll take a blue croc also.
ps: please have the coats that I ordered this morning delivered by 10am because I have a meeting at 11.
pps: if tonight I dream of Clive Owen hanging out in my living room with one of these handbags, does that make me a gay man?  or just a  very dedicated TLO fan?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583505025 Kelley Comfort

I agree with howdoilook. The blue crocodile is gorgeous! I also think the little pocket for the cloche is a great idea because sometimes things swinging around on your bag can be really irritating, especially when you’re running to catch that last train. I like the idea of being able to put it in a pocket that’s stylish, instead of just flipping it into the bag where it risks getting scratched by keys or whatever you’re carrying.

    • Alisa Rivera

For this price point, you should buy a Kelly or Birkin. Why dick around with what’s essentially a knockoff?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KEYJDIENR5MRK2NXJYKNOLWDFE Alexandria

      Yea!

    • Anonymous

I’ll vote Yea! Classic is always good, although, as others have pointed out, the Galleria bag is similar to the Hermes Kelly and Birkin. I like red/poppy color a lot.

I looked up the prices and converted from Euro:
      Safiano Leather: $2,200
      Ostrich: $8,220
      Croc: $30,600

      Yowza.

      • Kate Pearce

oh is that all? I’ll have 3 of each then thank you :)

me and my easy canvas or something like it H&M messenger bag is the perfect companion when going out. I did have a murse a few years ago that was made by a messenger bag company, but it was small and frankly looks like a purse, which I wasn’t self-aware about it. I don’t go for those bags that are carried out at the men’s fashion shows, unless I was carrying contraband.

    • http://twitter.com/theorymeg Megan K.

YEA.  I want the blue one!!!!!!!  T-Lo, will you get it for me for Christmas??

    • Allison Woods

I dyed a pair of pants that shade of mint green last week, so to avoid being matchy, I have to say no….but I love it!!

Handsome, though not iconic. The tomato soup red color would be terrific with a black coat.

    • Margo Anderson

Nice purse.  I’d probably be willing to go up to $100 if I saw it at TJ Maxx.

$30K for a crocodile purse?  Even if I won the mega lottery tomorrow, I couldn’t live with myself if I paid a year’s tuition at a good school or a downpayment on a house for a handbag.  Bring on the tumbrels.

    • Nicole Howard

      Agreed, very Birkin-esque.

Can’t tell from these images.  Is there an outside pocket?  How many and what size are the interior compartments?  You can’t really expect us to judge a purse on the meager information you’ve provided!   I will say that the top zip and shoulder strap are both good things, and the overall style is nice.

    • Anonymous

The blue croc is to die for … and of course is $30k and the most expensive of them all. Actually, I think the others are a little boring. Too tame.

When I was in Las Vegas last year for a business trip, I stayed at a hotel connected to Crystals, where there’s a Prada store, along with just about every other high-end retailer. And I fell in love with this divine Prada bag, which was $1,300, and called my husband on the phone to tell him about it, and the sweet idiot offered to buy it for me. And I, being the bigger idiot, demurred. But really, neither one of us is stupid, and I’m still glad I turned down his generous offer. I just can’t get into spending that much on a bag, no matter how beautiful. And certainly not $30k, which would make you a 1 percenter.

ummm is this even a question?? YAYYY

Nay.  It looks like Grandma’s knockoff of a Birkin. And the mint green ostrich reminds me too much of the Thanksgiving turkey before it goes in the oven.

    • Anonymous

i love that mint green ostrich leather, but the style is just too conservative for me.

    • Anonymous

      yes please

I love that coral color! Personally, I’m not a fan of ostrich, because the bumps make my purse look like it has measles, although apparently it floats the boats of a lot of other people, including my mother. I’m not usually a fan of crocodile, but that shade of blue has me going CRIKEY.

    • margaret meyers

This is such a restrained bag that I feel the alligator, especially in that blue, is too aggressive an effect. Te ostritch bag with the lady-like pale blue, works.

    • Anonymous

      want. Yea for sure!

    • Anonymous

Personally, I’ve never been much of a handbag-as-fashion person. I use four bags—one for each season—and don’t change them out to coordinate with my clothes. I chose the style of the bags, which are all the same, for their practicality, and I’m perfectly contented with what I have.

However, I still get interest and compliments when people see me carrying them.

    • Anonymous

      I’ll take the red one.

    • Anonymous

      YEA!

The pale green one might be the first designer handbag I’ve ever coveted.

    • http://twitter.com/Hussified Coleen D. Wybranski

Tears spontaneously came to my eyes at the sight of that first bag. WANT. I am literally crying over how beautiful that is.

I have one Coach bag in metallic brown.  I never switch out, except for a black evening bag for fancy events.  That’s why I get brown purses.  They go with everything.

Gorgeous.  Love a classic handbag in pretty colors.

the style is ok, but the colors are a NAY

I want to fall asleep with that bag beside me every night forever.

    • Anonymous

Yea!  I just love them all for all the reasons mentioned by TLo.

I cannot wait to find a good knock-off!

    • Anonymous

Gorgeous. I love a basic-looking bag in a luxurious material.

    • http://www.beautifymylifeblog.com Jessica

Absolutely gorgeous. The pale pink is my least favorite, but they’re all beautiful.

    • http://profiles.google.com/jenna.thomasmckie Jenna Thomas-McKie

Oh, hell to the yes!  Drooling over that blue crocodile.

    • lilibetp

Hallelujah!  No top flap.  I hate top flaps and really think they should be outlawed!!!!!!!….  Of course, by the time I save enough money to buy one of these, they won’t be making them anymore.

OH YES I WANT ME ONE!

      They are so hermes likely….

      I love that shape.

    • Anonymous

They are very pretty.  However, I would never, even if I had the money to do so, buy something made of crocodile.  Or ostrich for that matter.

    • Joanna Schuth

Those last two make me weak in the knees.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AYQCICXEN2CCDBFV5HED4Z2RUA Dee B

Nay.  The color choices do nothing for me.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I’d crawl over dead babies for that blue croc one. OK, upon reflection, maybe not, but that is a gorgeous bag. Definitely in.

    • nancy

      Yes, one of each, please!

    • aimee_parrott

      Ooh… PRETTY!

      YEA!

I want that red bag right now.

It’s not my personal style of purse–I hate purses with handles–but this is a classic design that is classic for a reason. I love that they’ve updated the colors, details, and leathers to suit modern sensibilities, moving it far away from the old-lady purse that has virtually the same silhouette. (My grandmother had a closet of such purses, usually rendered in patent leather.)

That blue alligator is enough to make me rethink my stance against purses with handles. If someone gave me that one, I would definitely use it.

      YEA.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3NXBVKLOMNGCAVCVXOVWDGD3SE Marissa

I HATE the crocodile. I think it looks fake and tacky. Everything else is lovely though.

    • http://twitter.com/Cravies Katie cravens

      JA dore.

    • Anonymous

The blue croc makes me weep with joy – but the price just makes me weep. That’s just ridiculous and pathetic. Even if you can ‘afford’ it, to spend 30K on a handbag is disgusting. What in the world makes it worth that much? I can understand why jewelry is expensive, and the prices of handbags and clothes is simply out of control.

As far as purses for men, I’ve never understand why the messenger bag hasn’t caught on more. I think they’re kind of sexy. I don’t know how men operate without something to carry their stuff in. And if it’s OK for Keifer Sutherland in ’24’ – it’s OK for you (although I guess he was carrying guns…). Maybe not for formal occasions, but for everyday – go for it!

The texture on the green one (is that the ostrich?) gives me the willies. The style is nice, though.

    • Anonymous

It’s a good-looking bag. I like the red and the blue; not into the pastels. I love that it’s not gigantic.

    • http://twitter.com/Kerry_McC Kerry McCombs

I love that mint green color!

      yea.  They are so beautiful!

    • Samantha Hanson

Sooooo pretty. I want that green one so bad.

    • Anonymous

YEA!  Love the coral and blue croc one.  Don’t care for the seafoam green, mostly due to the ostrich.

I confess I’ve never even heard of the word saffiano until this very post.  Does that mean my fashionista card gets revoked???

    • Jessica O’Connell

YEA and Gorgeous! And probably cost the equivalent of a couple months’ rent…

    • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

Perfect. I can see each of the colors (and textures) actually speaks to a different look and even woman. The proportions and form are practical and functional. And, yes, very classic timeless style; that’s my kind of look/’investment’. That said, though, I probably would never spend that much on a bag in my lifetime.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Gorgeous.  I LOVE the ostrich leather.  Love the color of it, too.  Covet and want.  Despite the price.  You’re right, though, TLo, that bag would last forever if you took care of it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

      One of each please!

    • Brenda Williams

I’m somewhat surprised by the colors – is that the entire color line?   But the styling is the kind of basic chic that will last for may years.

    • http://twitter.com/marcelaphane Marcela

YEA! I want to have babies with that blue croc one.

    • Anonymous

I’ll take the green one, please, if anyone is doing their Christmas shopping early.

    • Anonymous

If you’re going to kill a crocodile, don’t dye it blue. Unless it’s a sad crocodile who turned blue all by itself.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

      *sigh* yes….

    • Anonymous

I want that pink bag.  IN.

    • Ruth Gottesman

You guys always pick the most boring bags to discuss. Yes it’s classic but there is absolutely nothing to catch the eye. Nay.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7HFJAPMKDEHZKV7XZLFFROTPFI Julie

Using animal skin as materials will never be ok… I understand the fashion and durability behind it, but they are treated in inhumane, awful conditions in which they are tortured and beaten to death while they are still alive. Are they gorgeous? Yes. Can they be done with a similar material that is cruelty-free? for the money they go for, I bet they could.

    • Sharon Emery

      Oh, yes indeedy!

    • Megan Patterson

Oooh yes. But not in the ostrich. Is it just me or does ostritch leather always look kind of cheap? Like, even when it’s real it looks like it’s made out of plastic to me.
