Claire Danes in Oscar de la Renta

Posted on October 12, 2011

In our ongoing study of How Celebrities Aren’t Like Us, we submit the following for consideration. When you are an actress and you’ve just launched your new cable series to much buzz and you need to eat at least (more likely “only”) one meal a day, you don’t brown bag it, or run out to a lunch cart, or even hit the drive-thru. You strap on your Oscar de la Renta and your big girl shoes and hit the streets of Beverly Hills, knowing (possibly hoping) that you will be photographed.

And can we just say?  Brava, Claire. Well done. Très chic, darling. Maybe just a skosh too coordinated but that’s fine for a daytime look. But stop scowling like the photographer’s annoying you. No one’s buying it.

And since the whole point of this promenade was to get photographed and get talked about, are you all watching her new series, Homeland, on Showtime like we ordered you to? Because it really is the best show on television right now.

I love it, but I think a more simple, solid color bag would have been better.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I wish the bottom was just a bit more fitted.

  • Aly Marti

gee whiz i want that dress.

  • Amy Munson

I do agree with you Homeland is good.  But the best show on tv has to be Breaking Bad.  Are you guys fans?

    • scottyf

Really love that show. Excellent acting.

I’ll never tout the program because of a personal beef I have with Giancarlo Esposito. Once, when we were both much younger, he laughed at my southern pronunciation of “cement” (with the accent on the first syllable–like the Beverly Hillbillies). No matter how off-the-hook talented I think he is, I’ll never forgive his ass for that.

I’m such a shallow bitch sometimes.

      • Anonymous

Let it go and be happy you are you.  My husband and I bicker over pronunciation of “cement” like a couple of fools.  He’s from California, Central Valley, and pronounces it as you do.    He also does things I can’t forgive to “theater!”  Besides, Bryan Cranston is a gorgeous creature, aside from all else.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Giancarlo is one of my (88 year old) mother’s pretend boyfriends. If I tell her that,  it will crush her.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

        To further taint the cast…
I went to a “Mr. Show Live!” thing and afterwards met David Cross & Brian Posehn who were very cool, but Bob Odenkirk was a real dick to his fans and looked annoyed to be meeting and greeting.

      • muzan-e

There aren’t many things that can temper my hopeless Giancarlo crush, but a dick move like that gets pretty close.  On the other hand, I’m reminded of my first few weeks in the American south. Between the accents and the terminology, things swiftly became hilarious. Or bewildering. Or frustrating.

Put this up for you? Well sure, I’m tall, no worries.
She’s crying; grab me a dummy and some nappies, won’t you? What? No, I –  Okay, get me a pacifier and some diapers.
Lock the car; I’ll look for a trolley. What do you mean, there aren’t trolleys in Arkansas? Right. Right. Shopping cart. Okay.

And that’s not even touching on the accents! Years later, my southern-born husband need only say “There’s a squirrel on the roof” to have me snorting with laughter.  Not to worry, though; he gets payback every time I try to order a caramel sundae. *g*

Scotty – A million years ago I worked my first job as a PA on movie with called Sweet Lorraine. All of the young actors have gone on to much fame (Edie Falco,Evan Handler, Trini Alvarado). One day I tapped the fender of Giancarlo’s crappy banged up car with a production passenger van and he screamed bloody murder about it. Every time I see him I think of what an overdramatic dick he was. Edie was lovely though and Trini is an angel on Earth in my book.

I’m up to season 2, episode 7 or 8 of Breaking Bad. I had to take a breather after Hank’s horrible experience in the desert with Danny Trejo’s head. I was nervous and twitchy for a week. I hear I meet Gus soon, though. The rat bastard.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

I’d prefer a different shoe and bag with the outfit, but that dress really suits her. And this is the one time I’m going to defend Claire Danes, so here it goes: I think she’s scowling because the sun’s right in her face. She needs sunglasses.

    • Anonymous

I was just about to say the same thing.  She would have been a lot happier if she had remembered her shades!

      • Anonymous

I think the shades got lost in that gigantic bag.  She looks lovely, and I especially like the not-gyno hem length.  Nicely done, Claire.

    • Anonymous

Maybe she didn’t wear sunglasses because she wanted to be sure that she’d get recognized and photographed.

      • Anonymous

… so we can see her long, lush eyelashes?

        • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

          HA!

      • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

No way, nothing says “LOOK AT ME” more than a celeb in shades. Especially a Louboutin-wearing celeb.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

i barely know who she is. i keep mixing her up w/ diane lane, or someone, i think.
but i bet i am the first person up this morning who’s gonna tell you they like the shoes on the model better.
but that the peri-barkcloth & upside down umbrella skirt hit a better note than most.
& that the purse picks up the faux drawn lines of the charcoal in the dress in just the right way.
& that it’s now time to go to sleep.

Oh dear, get yourself some My So-Called Life dvds pronto!  You’ll be hers for life. My So-Called Life was the best show on TV of its time.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Sorry but I just can’t get past how deeply I hate that dress.

    • Anonymous

You and me both, Kilt. You and me both.

    • Anonymous

Yes! It’s got a built-in snotty ugliness.  I want to slap it or something.

    • Anonymous

I can’t hate it, but I find it the epitome of ladies-who-lunch dull.

  • Addicted2Glamour

I love that she’s holding her bag up so high. It shows it off in the frame of the photograph AND it’s giving her a quick bicep work-out at the same time. This is the smartest woman in Hollywood.   :-)

  • Sobaika Mirza

I demand this dress! The universe owes me THIS DRESS.

  • Anonymous

I don’t find that dress very pretty.
She looks old (older than she is, anyway) and overdressed for my taste, like she puled all the guns out at once. Like a 40+lady who lunches or something.Unless she’s going to a business meeting or something, in which case I find it kind of boring.

  • Valerie Owens

She is totally rocking this dress – way better than the model!

  • Judy_J

Love that dress!  She looks great.

  • Anonymous

Love her. Love the look (shoes and bag are just fine thank you very much). Would love to have lunch with her but troubled by what I would wear. Which outfit would you wear?

Oh but I do love the hat on the runway model.

    Sor

  • Lori

Love, except the bag.   Forgetting the styling of the model the dress looks  better on Clare Danes, it looks fab on her, and I prefer the belt she’s wearing to the one on the model.

  • Anonymous

I’m not watching it yet, but I intend to check it out.

  • Anonymous

Not watching it. I don’t get Showtime.

  • Anonymous

I wanna know what celebrities carry in those big bags. Regular people carry everything but their kitchen sink, I suppose (I try to carry a slim purse or just a wallet myself), but celebrities?
And Homeland doesn’t have the same stereotyping of Muslims and Arabs as 24 started to do, does it? I got turned off of that show when I saw the episode with the sleeper cell family making the high-school boy complicit by killing his girlfriend. Hopefully this show aims a bit higher than that worn-out trope.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I HATE when I see an Olsen or someone with a gigantic purse and a bottle of Fiji water. Like seriously. You can spend 30 grand on a bag but can’t drop 15 bucks for a Nalgene bottle?
So at least Claire isn’t pulling that move. Maybe the bag is so big because it has an insulated water bottle pocket or something. Yeah right.

    • http://twitter.com/_serenachan Serena

Jury’s still out on Homeland’s treatment of Muslims. The maybe-terrorist guy is a secret Muslim. So… depends on whether he’s guilty or not?

      • Anonymous

Thanks, Serena. I don’t get Showtime anyway, so this inquiring mind wanted to know.

  • Anonymous

So glad she skipped the hat!

    I need those shoes asap!

The dress is bizarre in itself but it looks great on her.

  • Vaniljekjeks

She looks fabulous.  She would be working it for the cameras.  When I look fabulous, I work it for cameras that aren’t there, and if they are, they aren’t taking pictures of me.  Still need to work it.

  • Anonymous

yes i’m watching like the good minion i am… or actually, i’m DVRg ~ can i still be in the “good minion” category? :)

claire is, as they say, “a vision”. the carefully chosen louboutins (i probably mangled that) add a beautiful, subtle pop of color with the sole, and the snakeskin bag is just match enough to the lines on the OdlR dress, but not so much so that it’s a dyed-to-match look. i almost wish WERQ posts weren’t reserved for only rc looks, bc for a young, fashionable lady at lunch, this is most certainly WERQ worthy.

  • Anonymous

Watched Homeland from the DVR last night and it blew me away. And this dress is just fab-o! I love the nod to the 50′s.

  • Anonymous

She does look good. But a little too corporate, perhaps? I think she left her blazer hanging on the back of her executive chair.

  • http://modernretrowoman.com DrJulieAnn

To me, it looks like she is scowling because the sun is so bright and she doesn’t have her sunglasses on.  I see people do it all the time here in Los Angeles (or, maybe they are just annoyed because someone stole their coveted parking spot…).

Edited to add: I see Celia beat me to the sunglasses comment. But I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought she needed her sunglasses.

Love, love, love the dress and shoes!!! So chic!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YAMNQMUGFM4NNSPAQLZRODSD5I Angela

I love Claire Danes, and this is a great dress on her, it’s definitely a “blond” look, however that bag! ugh! It looks too heavy with this sunny little dress, the color matches just enough to be off.  I think an ashy-coal gray clutch would have been just the thing. Sadly, I too do not get the Showtime, *sob*!

    • Anonymous

No Showtime here either and I refuse to pay those cable crooks a dime more than I already do. Thieving bastards! *shakes fist*

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Smile for the camera, dear. Or wear some sunglasses. I’m sure you have room in that bag for a few pairs.

  • Anonymous

Cute. Gives me the inferiority complex I feel when dropping off kids at school next to mom’s dressed to the nines (in terms of a school drop off).

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

That’s why I am happy when I see a mom in PJ pants & slippers at drop-off. Because at least I’m not HER. :)

  • Anonymous

Could have been what looks like a very bright sun fellows. And she was going to La Scala of course she donned it.

  • Anonymous

Awwwww… she didn’t wear the hat!!

Don’t get Showtime, so won’t be watching.  In our household there is an unwritten threshold on Cable costs….HBO is a go, but Showtime is another helping of dessert that we just don’t need.  Our loss, I suppose, but them’s the facts!!

  • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

That dress is beyond fabulous, and she looks great in it. Everything is working. It’s the best I’ve seen her looking in a very long time.

  • Anonymous

There was a comment on another TLo post about the redness of a runway model’s knees; I see that the model in this post also has red knees.  Is there something that the models are doing backstage where they have to be on the hard floor with their bare knees??  (Get your minds out of the gutters – this is a legit question!)

Re scottyf’s continued resentment towards someone who laughed at their pronunciation of a word – hold onto it, man.  It is indicative of an insensitive jerk who will probably never understand your anger, and I’m all for shunning anything they do – even if it is a TV show.

And finally, the dress:  I don’t like black and brown together (too sad and morose), so I don’t like this look much.

  • Anonymous

The dress looks better on her than it does on the model. Well done, Claire.

But AGAIN with the purse strap thing. Using the short strap and leaving the long one hanging like that. This is going to become a thing; I just know it. Ugh, I can see it now: mass transit, rush hour, women getting their bag straps tangled and hooked on everything in sight. It’s going to be miserable. Maybe I’ll start carrying a pair of scissors. A quick snip and I’m free.

I can only agree with your comment about Homeland being “the best show on television right now” because Breaking Bad ended on Sunday and Walking Dead does not start until Sunday.

    Oh…and Claire looks nice.

Sorry, guys. That’s an ugly dress. She does look well put-together, though.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress and approve of the change in belt.  Plus the little flash of red on the shoes is a knockout!  Well done–now go eat that 4 oz. of broiled fish and two asparagus spears.

  • Anonymous

Fab, fab, fab.  Gimme that bag, right now!!!!!

  • MilaXX

She looks good. I don’t mind the coordinating look because it’s supposed to be “everyday life” and not a RC look. I’d wear that if I could afford to. I was hesistant to watch her show because she can be annoying, but I checked it out and it’s really good.

  • MilaXX

I didn’t know that was a don’t I do that with straps on some of my bags all the time. Never got tangled in anything though.

  • Anonymous

Wow.  I really love this.  Not just “Yeah, she looks good and put-together,” but WOW.  I’m impressed.  Except for the weird scowly-face.

  • Anonymous

Am I the only person who thinks the top of the dress is way too tight?  Yes, it is fitted, and she may be flat as a board, but it looks like she has to hold her breath or else the back closure will pop open.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I love Homeland too. Why don’t you blog it, TLo?

  • Cathy S

I really like the dress. Hate the bag though.

  • muzan-e

I’m loving Homeland – a show I’d never have bothered with, if not for your recommend.   But it’s delicious, the perfect counterpoint to something like 24 – which seemed to function on a theme I just couldn’t stomach. And to be honest, I’d have watched it for Danes’ near-functioning schizophrenic regardless. *g*

    Not yet.
    Planning to.

  • Jessica O’Connell

That is a pretty fabulous little dress. Glad she skipped the hat from the runway :-)

  • Anonymous

The dress is awesome, but how could she pass on that hat?

  • Anonymous

She looks fantastic, but more importantly, yes: Homeland is awesome. I don’t usually go in for war porn but the acting and the plot are so compelling that I find myself wishing it weren’t over each week.

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

    Love the look.

And on my god the show is so good!

  • Anonymous

She bores the crap out of me.

  • Anonymous

This is what I think of as “people with money” dressing. It looks fine, even good. But it’s not exciting, it’s not fun, she doesn’t look particularly comfortable or happy or as if she’s thinking “yeah, I’m showing you how to do it gals!”

It’s wearing a bazillion dollars  worth of dress & accessories just to look perfectly fine, & not at all appreciative. Which can be accomplished for well under 200 bucks.

I think she looks great; the primary thing I like is the hemline. Even on the model, it hits at the knee. I wish more celebs (Heidi) would realize how ridiculous they look in mini-skirts and how sophisticated they look in a knee-length skirt.

  • aimee_parrott

She looks great.  And YES I’m watching Homeland, and wow is it good.  I was a little apprehensive about the second episode because the pilot was SO strong, but I thought the second episode was terrific too.  I love that there’s a lot of room for doubt, and all of the actors are at the top of their game.

Yes, your job is done. I may have to watch this show. I’m a Dexter fan, so I already respect Showtime for being able to put out a quality product. I also haven’t seen Claire in anything in a decade at least.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, Dexter plus Homeland ! My Sunday nights have vastly improved since I gave up predictable, repetitive CSI:Miami.
If you can catch Claire in Temple Grandin, you may be extremely impressed with her versatility.

The dress is eye-catching, but doesn’t move me much. She buried her sunglasses in the bottom of that cool bag, thus the squinting and scowling, as others have already said.

  • http://twitter.com/hpenfield Hannah Penfield

HATE THE DRESS. Love the bag. Hate them together.

    Chic, chic, chic.

Not loving the bag or the scowl, but other than that, she looks great.

  • Andrea Weymouth

I’m watching the show because you told me to and yeah it’s great……..Claire can really rock those crazy eyes!

  • elzatelzabelz

Very pretty. Homeland really is very well done. I was really surprised.

  • Anonymous

Yes. Yes. Yes.   Watching.   Zum befehl.  *click heels

I usually like what Clare Danes wears.    Having started watching her when she was a teenager, it’s sort of heartwarming to see her evolve into a sophisticated woman.

I don’t like the bag. because it hides the dress.    Plus I don’t like these satchel bags that are popular today.  They are fine when wearing a coat, but they are too heavy for a summer weight dress.   The proportions are all wrong.   It’s sort of like the rule that that a bridal bouquet should not be bigger than the bride’s head.

Plus, ya’ll I’m in a bad mood because what the heck was that Jackson guy doing trying to steal a base with one out?  He totally took Detroit out of that inning and possibly the game.  Which is fine because I’d rather Texas one, but it offends my sensibilities.  It’s totally putting the wrong shoes with the dress.

    • Anonymous

I know.  I am sad.  I LOVE Detroit.  Although if someone has to beat them, better Texas than those f-ing Yankees.

  • Lena Bea

Gorgeous. Just so amazing. I love the dress, and the bag. Not quite sure that the red on the shoes goes with this outfit, but I don’t care.  Love.

  • Zi Jie Tan

    The bag. Eww.
