WERQ: Selena Gomez

Posted on October 12, 2011

The more traditionally minded readers are going to hate us for this, but here’s the thing. Selena has this tendency, like a lot of child stars transitioning into adulthood, to dress way too formally and way too mature a lot of the time. So we did tiny gay gasps when we saw how fresh and cute she looked here:

The makeup looks fresh, the hair looks soft, the shoes are KILLA, the top is pretty and if you can’t wear glittery hot pants to a horror movie premiere as a teenager, when CAN you wear them? You WERQ that shit, little girl! Love your earrings!

    “The more traditionally minded readers”

Another reason why your minions are devoted, you guys are so tactful when the blunt & judgmental version might hurt feelings.

I looked it up, she’s 19 even if she does have a baby face, & that’s quite a modest look for most 19 year old actresses.

    • Anonymous

That’s a normal look for more 19 year olds period. Speaking as one of them.

  • Sobaika Mirza

    GIMME DEM SHOES.

And shorts too, while you’re at it.

  • Anonymous

It is pretty damned cute. Andtotally age appropriate. As in my slightly overweight mid 30s mom of a toddler self couldnt do this even if i wanted to…

So brava for her fashionably youthful look. And yes- killa shoes!!

  • Anonymous

The shoes are awesome.  I’d like a little less volume in the top with those shorts.  Not a whole lot less — not so it’s super tight — just take in the sleeves a little, and nip it at the waist a little.

  • Anonymous

Cute as hell. WERQ. Hot pants without the trashy.
Others who would wear the little sequined hot pants, and fail, would be pairing them with some boobtastic top. This is how you do it. Legs or boobs. Not both.

  • Anonymous

I love tops like that. It does look like something someone at least a bit older would wear, though. Maybe it’s not age; maybe it’s that she projects such youthfulness, as opposed to sophistication. I like the outfit, and she looks great. Just a bit of a disconnect for me – - I guess because I would absolutely wear that top (not w/ the shorts), and I’m old enough to be her *gasp* *ouch* *eek* grandmother. VERY YOUNG grandmother, mind you, but technically it’s *head exploding* true.

“Tlo said: if you can’t wear glittery hot pants to a horror movie premiere as a teenager, when CAN you wear them?”

I bet it was embarrassing when Heidi showed up in the same outfit.

      my thoughts exactly!

Oh my God, don’t show it to her, she’ll get ideas….

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

    Yup

  • Sara__B

She does look fresh and cute, and I like that since she has her legs on display, she’s put her cleavage under wraps. Unfortunately, she looks like she’s inflating her lips. I hope not. She’s only 19!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6RS6NLL44AED3E4QWIYTDQGU6I Psy_Chick

Her lips have just always looked like she’s having an allergic reaction to shellfish. I’m just glad she’s finally growing into her head. (She used to look like one of the Pep Boys.)

  • http://twitter.com/hpenfield Hannah Penfield

Couldn’t agree more. She looks fab.

  • Anonymous

She’s adorable.  I wish I could wear glittery hot pants.  I’ve got the legs for it – but at 47 I’m afraid my time has passed on that.  Why was it, when I was 19, a night out meant jodhpur like pants and neon colors?  I mean, don’t get me wrong, I wore them (and I ROCKED them) – but, still -

    • Anonymous

Lol. Timing is everything, isn’t it?

    • Cathy S

I’m 47 too, but I’m afraid I’ve never been fashionable. Sigh. She looks adorable, doesn’t she? She could rock jodhpurs and neon too.

  • Anonymous

Is that a snake bracelet?  If so, I’m digging it.

    • Sara__B

Just Jared has some great shots of her snake bracelet. I like it!

  • Anonymous

She’s one of my favorites of that whole group of Disney & Nick teen stars. (I am subjected to them by my 12 yo daughter.)

I really don’t like formal shorts, but I will grudgingly admit she looks cute in them. The blouse and shoes are the perfect balance to those glittery shorts. Even though, as you say, she often dresses too maturely, she usually hits all the right notes.

  • Kyle Crawford

    slow fashion day?

  • Anonymous

Lovely. Ahh to be 19 and genetically blessed.

  • Anonymous

When I saw these all I could think of was Bert’s 70s inspired ensemble. She looks good though, so maybe he’s more on trend than he realizes

  • http://twitter.com/LaurenJeanSTM Lauren Jean

Love every single thing going on here. WERQ it, girl!

  • Anonymous

That’s the best hair I’ve seen in a while.

    • Anonymous

      I agree. On anyone!

    • Sara__B

No extensions, and not a trace of cocker spaniel. VERY nice!

  • Anonymous

Isn’t life funny?  When you’re young, you want to look older, and when you’re older, you want to look younger.  What’s that saying about how the grass is always greener on the other side?  LOL  But she does look molto cute and deserves the TLo “WERQ” stamp.

  • Anonymous

This is definitely one of those looks that you can say only look good on a certain age.  Selena looks cute and totally appropriate.  Now, picture Jennifer Lopez or Sarah Jessica Parker in this.  Painful.

  • Wrenaria

She looks super cute! I like her bracelet and the pop of her red nails.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

Head to toe perfection! WERQ is the word!

  • Anonymous

Love this look!  I wish more young celebs would take this route.  She looks fun and fresh and adorable.  Those shorts could have easily looked hooker but the fact they aren’t skin tight or slitted anywhere makes them cute instead.  Classier than most miniskirts, imo.  Perfect look for the event.

  • Anonymous

Hm. Aren’t these usually called beartrap shoes?

  • MilaXX

I think she gets it right fashionably most of the time. I agree the last few hosting gigs she has done she’s worn gowns that were a bit too mature for her age. This is a great look for her.

  • Anonymous

She looks really cute.  I LUV her outfit, and wish I were young enough to pull it off.  The shoes are passable…tiring of the over complicated bootie-sandles.

  • Anonymous

    Perfect! Perfect! Perfect!

The Girl is rocking this WERQ.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

She doesn’t look like a bubble head here.  Looks like she got healthier.

  • Anonymous

She is a beautiful girl but I am not digging the JLo steez.

  • http://twitter.com/theorymeg Megan K.

OMG I love her.  I wish I was adorable and famous at the age of, what, twelve??  Le sigh.

  • Anonymous

The top makes the whole outfit look cute instead of hookerish. It gets my fuddy duddy stamp of approval.

    • Anonymous

though, the bear trap shoes are a little hooker-y. Not sure that I could recommend a good alternative though… [stares off into middle distance, deep in thought about shoes]

I really can’t get behind that top. Everything else shouts werq, but the top just ruins it for me. It just seems to be hanging there without any definable shape. Really can’t see how the whole look is getting such praise.

  • Anonymous

Cute and very age-appropriate!  Her gay/Bieber did a good job. *wink*

  • Anonymous

Formal shorts are for the young.  Look at those legs.

Best of all, no fear of seeing the good china.

  • Anonymous

I wouldn’t wear them with those shoes though.

Yeah, agreed with the TLo and the Kitten Nation – she looks HAWT.  Somehow I don’t mind super-short shorts as much as super-short skirts.  I mean, Daisy Dukes are going too far, but these aren’t tight, and the blousy top makes it WERQ.  And I like the slightly lighter hair color too.

I also like her nail color since so many teenagers / young adults go with that black. You go, Selena!

  • Anonymous

The top is Cher, the bottom is…Cher. But cute Cher. Mini-doll Cher.

  • Anonymous

can we go off topic and discuss why the hell they’re remaking The Thing?

    • Anonymous

It’s suppose to be a prequel.  It tells the story of the guys in the helicopter trying to shoot the dog at the beginning of  John Carpenter’s version.

      • Anonymous

they weren’t American in the original, though. (hence the whole point of the movie) meh.

I don’t like her style most of the times, but she’s the only one of her generation that has demonstrated some true style as she has grown.

  • elzatelzabelz

I’m not a fan of shorts as “dress” wear, but, this actually works. Like you said, age and event appropriate.

  • Anonymous

Call me old-fashioned, but as young and cute as she is, the spangled shorts say “Pretty Woman” to me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

She looks so spot on. WERQ

  • Anonymous

She not only looks her age, she looks hip.  Double win!

  • Anonymous

I love everything but the top. And as sheer white batwing henley tops go, this one isn’t so bad. The nails and jewelry are perfect, though.

  • Anonymous

    Pretty and fun.

Love, love the make-up.   I’m so glad the resisted the “red lip.”    It would have totally made it another kind of look.

  • Anonymous

Cute!  I like the blouse a lot.  Maybe that’s because I’ve owned a very similar one for years.

  • Anonymous

This is the first time I’ve ever seen her wear something age appropriate.  She usually looks like she’s playing dress up in her mother’s closet.  Hate the beartrap shoes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=527150091 Pat Biswanger

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her wear anything that wasn’t really terrific.  I don’t recall thinking that she dressed too old for her age; my impression was that she just always looks great.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_66KPZ36LMHMRQOX3HIJGHRNNUA MandyM

I saw this photo of her earlier today and thought of you, TLo. I was so hoping you would WERQ her since she looks so stinkin’ cute! LOVE LOVE LOVE

  • Anonymous

Very cute.  But honestly why all the tent clothes?  Maxi dresses?  A resurgence of Flashdance-esque off the shoulder-istic threads?  someone hold me.  I have fright.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I can’t abide formal shorts, but for once she doesn’t look like a desperate housewife.  WERQ.

I adore this look!  Just adore it!
    I want to wear this myself.  can I?  I’m only 33 :)

    • http://profiles.google.com/pixie.applecandy Pixie Wilson

      Of course you can!

I think (as a twenty one year old) that looks like these tend to be more about whether or not the wearer has nice legs. Like a friend of mine in her forties takes care of herself so she looks nicer in a flirtly, floral tight on the top cocktail dress then someone of the peeps my age. If you are only 33 and you have the legs for it, do it!

      • Anonymous

        I do, I do :)))

She looks great here – love the hot pants!

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

    Totally cute!  Totally!

  • Addicted2Glamour

I like the juxtaposition of the billowy, over sized top with the hot pants. J’adore the cuff. And the shoes are *just* busy enough to not fall into the dreaded bear trap category. Well done, Miss G!

  • Anonymous

    WERQ!!!! She looks head-to-toe fantastic.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

    WERQ is right! Cuuuuttte!

  • Emily Myers

I never thought I would like glittery hot pants, but she found a way to make them work. Very age appropriate.

I also covet the shoes.  They are fierce!!

  • Anonymous

    Ah.DOR.able! And I don’t care if I’m 54 – I want that top!

  • Anonymous

I agree! Speaking as a 40-something who should have been dressing way sluttier when she had the bod for it, wear this stuff when you can, girls! ;-)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love it.  She looks awesome and I want those shoes.
