WERQ: Rachel Zoe in Paris

Posted on October 04, 2011

You heard us. We said “WERQ” and Rachel Zoe in the same sentence.

Rachel Zoe attends the Christian Dior Spring 2012 show during Paris Fashion Week. Belt and dress by Rachel Zoe. Bag by Givenchy.

She makes it so easy to rag on her and we mostly hate the way she dresses for public appearance, but there’s always something to be said for simplicity and chicness. Sure, the hem’s a bit too long, but it’s such a striking look and we don’t care who knows it. You WERQ that minimalist chic shit, girl! Love your accessories, doll!

The hem is insane.  I wanna see the shoes!

    • Sobaika Mirza

The hem is effed up and her hair continues to look fried. Is she averse to conditioner?

Still, she looks good. I didn’t scream WERQ but she looks good.

      • Cathy S

Agreed on both the length and the hair. She looks good but I’m not feeling the WERQ.

She has the “borrowed dress that I’m too short for” syndrome which she shares with SJP among others.

      • Anonymous

Right? And it’s especially weird since she’s the designer, couldn’t she afford to give herself the dress?

      • Anonymous

Exactly!  I always feel like she’s wearing someone else’s clothes, or sometimes even looking like a little girl playing dress up.  Maybe that’s her thing, but some tailoring would add so much more authority to her presentation.

It’s chic, but I wonder how she will keep that hem from getting all black and messy looking, and what will happen if she or an innocent passer-by accidentally steps on it. And it goes without saying that her son must be elsewhere for the day, because no parent of an infant would wear head-to-toe white and expect to get away with it.

Clearly, I am too practical to understand high fashion. Ah well.

Actually… I have frequently worn head to toe white with my kids when they were infants.  Sometimes with more than one infant in my care.  Yeah, they might get a spot on it — but everything else is going to show the spot too.  And if anyone sees me holding a baby and wants to rag on the fact that I have one bit of baby food on my shoulder, screw ‘em.  They’re clearly looking for something to nitpick.

I also wear linen and I don’t care if it wrinkles.  Because it’s freaking linen and linen does that.  On occasion, I’ve even worn head to toe white linen (the last time would have been for a friend’s daughter’s birthday — 6 kids between the 2 of us, all under the age of 7).

Ah the advantages of not having to be photographed regularly:)

      • Anonymous

No kidding.  It was the first thing I thought – where is her son?  Actually it is the second thing I thought. The first thing was that her hair looks horrible and chewed upon by varmints.

    • Anonymous

She does look good but, damn, I want those red shoes behind her!

      • Anonymous

I’m sure she’s had the woman with the red shoes fired for inadvertently upstaging her.

That woman with the red shoes is the editor of Chinese Vogue – she can’t get that amazingly fabulous woman fired!  She’d an incredible stylist, I adore her.

All I’ll say is this woman is phenomenal.  Her name is Nicoletta, she’s the stylist for the Donna Karan shows, and when I interned there she would come in every day before the show for hours wearing her phenomenal Prada outfits with her incredible italian accent.  And one day she looked over at me and saw a huge scrape on my knee and said “You fell-a!”  I was so frazzled I had no idea what to tell this chic woman about how I got a scrape on my knee like a little child!

          • BerlinerNYC

I think she meant fired from LIFE. You know Zoe’s got connections. Literally.

          • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

i was gonna write that they were prada but i have been upstaged, above. i can note & that w/ something between confusion & consternation that this is the first time i’ve seen them worn out in the world.

I hate it. She looks like the cover of Amish Anorexia magazine.

    • Anonymous

nah…too much volume.  and too monastic or something.  the black accessories are the only thing that’s sort of saving it.  it’s not horrific, but certainly not werq.

    • Anonymous

Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird that she has a shoulder strap on her purse, yet has it hooked on her arm through the hand strap?

I wish the dress wasn’t so long, but overall looks good.  Hair needs some help, though.  How far along is she?  Or is her show filmed way  in advance and she’s had the baby?

      • MilaXX

Show is filmed in advance. She had a baby boy, he’s probably about 6 months now.

    • Anonymous

I dunno. I feel like I’ve seen that dress before, but (ahem) “styled” with a brown hooded robe and a light saber.

And the accessories that are so super-matchy they look cut from the same piece of skin get a WERQ??

      Hrrrmm.

      • Anonymous

OMG Laughed so loud that I worried my secretary at your comment re: light saber.

      • Thathoodwink

YES! As soon as I saw it, I said, “Princess Laia!”

    • MilaXX

For a change she doesn’t look like she’s swimming in fabric. Yes it’s too long but the rest of it actually fits her. Also the sunglasses? WANT

      • Anonymous

How so? She’s pulling up the sleeve in one shot and in another, we can see how it doubles back on itself on top of the cuff. The whole thing is falling off her, IMHO.

        • MilaXX

I highly doubt Rachel will ever wear anything that’s not too long in the cuffs and hem, but I can see a hint of hips. Maybe my standards are low, but I think this is one of her better looks.

    • Anonymous

My first thought was “Princess Leia wants her dress back.” My second: “Didn’t she just have a baby? How can her waist be so tiny?” My third: “It does look a hell of a lot better than 99% of the stuff she wears – so ok, she can have a werq in small letters.”

      • emily mcginnis

        i thought Princess Leia too.

    • Emily Woster

I cannot stand this woman, her Oompa Loompa glasses, her re-hash of the same dresses over and over again, and her terrible hair. I get that she has “a look” but I hate it. And it’s getting old.

    • Edward Pavle

OUT. She dresses like that all the time. Wah, she chose a nice color for the sunshine.

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

how can a person so thin as to be barely more there than a slice o’ cardboard wear anything that doesnt look just as it would on the hanger? but on that hanger & at that atelier it would not be allowed to drag on the ground. the privilege of the living, i guess. tho she does have an amazing purse, one which probably cost more than my yearly income. oh hell.

    • Anonymous

I’m gonna give it a wirk-because, fine…she looks good, but she still irks me.

    • http://twitter.com/Verena_Hafner Verena Hafner

Rachel Zoe definitely has a huge sense of style. But for some reason I never like what she wears herself. The clothes are fine but they never seem to suit her. Most of the time she looks overwhelmed (and over-accessorised). She hardly ever looks effortless.

Yeah, her too. I saw Obi-Wan, myself, but really, at some point or another, most the Star Wars cast shows up in some kind of white(ish) robe configuration. Few of them puddle this badly though — could be problematic in a battle.

    • Anonymous

Too Princess Leia. Maybe in any other color but white. Her hair looks dry and tortured, trim those ends.

      WERQ? Not hardly….

    • Anonymous

Pretty fabulous for something that is thisclose to being a Princess Leia costume.

    • Anonymous

Oh dear no. I agree she looks like an Olsen in white–or a pretentious little ghost.

    • Anonymous

Ummm . . . she looks like a nun playing hooky from Convent Beverly Hills.  Maybe because it’s so hard to see the detailing on the dress in the photos, but that’s a lot of white and nothing else.

That’s right!  WERQ that Princess Leia glam, girl!

    • Anonymous

I don’t know about this. She looks like a cross between a mad scientist and a sister-wife.

    • Anonymous

I usually find her icky, but I like this look.  If she needs someone to hem the damn thing, I would happily accept way-overpayment to do so.

    • Anonymous

I wish I could agree with a WERQ.  I do like the dress and I think it would be even more striking on a woman who wasn’t as petite as she is. Like, for example, me!  So it’s good and well accessorized (what we can see) but it’s not truly WERQ-worthy in my view.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I’m not gonna applaud a woman for getting dressed, when it is her job to help people get dressed. Especially when this is the result.

    • Anonymous

My only question is…this thing with the bag handles…she’s using one and letting the other just hang like that…is this a new thing? Because I REALLY don’t like it.

      • Eclectic Mayhem

She might just be making sure the bag is in the shot, if you see what I mean.

Actors do it with props all the time, you work out what size of shot is happening, close-up/mid-shot/extreme close-up, and then you cheat the frame by holding your tea cup or whatever unnaturally close to your face.  It would look strange in a long shot but okay in a close-up.

    • Anonymous

WERQ?  She’s wrapped in a bed sheet!

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

The good stuff: I love the bag and the belt. The sunglasses are awesome, and her shade of lipstick is perfect. To top it off, she wears red polish on short nails. I’ve always loved that. And unlike too many women on the red carpet, she’s just had her hair color done.

The bad stuff: Why didn’t she get a trim while she was at it? That is some fried, split hair right there. She drowning in that dress, but I guess that happens when you only weight 80 pounds.

    • Nora Mulllin

I have to disagree. Her hair is fried, her glasses are ugly, her dress is at least a size too large, and the hem is about three inches too long. On anyone else this would’ve been an auto-out from you guys.

    • Anonymous

Like the glasses and the top and the belt and the nail polish. (Her nails always look so good–I wish I could have a daily manicure!)

      Do not like:
      a. Her haystack of a hair style
      b. The absurdly long skirt, which also looks too big on her–like she was in Mommy’s closet
      c. The way she’s carrying the bag, and the fact that the bag has handles and a chain that apparently does not detach, which is too bad cuz it looks ‘way dumb

So, not a WREQ, but not a WERQ either.  Oh–and where’s the Peanut?  Apparently she gave birth and survived.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I’m convinced if she put that bag on her shoulders, it would weigh her down so much she’d fall over.

I cannot get past the condition her hair is in.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m with TLo on this one. I think she looks better than she usually does, even though I really hate those sunglasses.  (Side note:  the lady in the background with the OMG face is cracking me up and do I ever want those red shoes!)

    • Vaniljekjeks

She looks quite good.  I think that’s the only I have seen of her smiling.  It does her well.

    • Anonymous

What’s with the Kate Hudson hair?

    • Anonymous

So who made the sunglasses? I know I should recognize them but I can’t quite place them.

    • Anonymous

WERQ? I’ll agree with effortless… she looks like she is playing dress up in someone else’s dress.  Granted the Givenchy bad is to die for and the belt and watch are tres chic. She is an older version of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen with the same style sensibility.

If the hem were correct she’d look less like a ghost-like vision, but hey, I think she looks good, in her corporeal ghost-like vision way.

The smile in the third picture (along with the characteristic gesture in which her hand looks strangely aimless & helpless, just hanging off the end of her arm like that) is, I imagine, part of why Rodger & she are still together – if he can still say something that lights her up in that very Rachel Zoe way.

    • Anonymous

Those sunglasses are extremely unflattering. She looks like cult member from the waist down and mad scientist from the neck up.

I always wondered why she could serve her clients so well and not herself. She is very good at not letting her clients over due it – they almost always have a crazy dress with min. accessories or a simple dress avec crazy accessories. She usually looks like a circus tent exploded near her so yes! Werq it RZ, and stick with the simple.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=167100010 Meghan Young

The clothing’s great but her hair, LIKE ALWAYS, looks fried and half-assed as shit.

    • Anonymous

Agreed she looks better than usual, but that’s not saying much. No way is this a WERQ, unless we’re now grading on a very steep curve. Her hair indicates that Joey did not come to Paris. The dress looks like it would fit my 6’1″ tall, size 4 sister as white shirt, sleeves included. The belt and bag are great; except they almost match (material and color), which I thought was wrong (although by two different ‘designers’, I’m looking at you RZ). No pop of color? The sunglasses are dumb.

But she looks a hell of a lot better than the Palmero chick.

I’m most focused on her beautiful red nails. They’re not dragon-lady at all, totally appropriate for the mother of a young baby, but still very eye-catching. The color (not the length) remind me of Barbra from the cover of the The Way We Were album:

Its a definetely a werq! Something about it appeals to me.

Also whether or not it looks like something out of Star Wars is irrelevant given that most fashion is a reinterpretation of the past. I would see this as a contemporary reinterpretation of the long sleeved maxis that were popular in either the sixties or seventies (can’t remember the decade, I’m too tired.)

I don’t understand the fascination with this woman AT ALL.  She has the absolute worst taste in styling.  So glad Brad had the wits about him to jump ship, and using her as a springboard was brilliant.  Both Rachael and her sloth of a husband epitomize everything I hate about Hollywood.  Ugh, get off my tv all ready.  And I have no idea what she does to her skin, but I don’t even have an HD tv and she looks about 10 years older than she actually is!

That dress is dragging on the ground, the sleeves are too long/big, the blouson it too blousy . . . wtf???? I guess they don’t make it in size 0000. She looks great in a pony tail, which would have served her better on this terrible, terrible bad hair day. I like the watch and the belt, though.

It’s Princess Leia minus the cinnamon buns.
