WERQ: Charlize Theron in Christian Dior

Posted on October 13, 2011

Charlize is another one of those gals who we suspect has been told her whole life how gorgeous she is and subsequently recoils from putting the work in for public appearances. Basically, if it’s not the Oscars, her red carpet getups give off the distinct whiff of don’tgivafuck: very simple, occasionally unflattering outfits and minimal makeup. The classic “Pulling a Jolie” effort.

And while this is a very simple look, it’s also a very chic one and we think she looks fantastic. Not super-crazy about the eye-shadow, which makes her look like she got punched in the face ten days ago, but hey, she put the effort in and besides, we can’t honestly say anything looks bad here. Cute dress, SUPER-cute clutch, and simple black pumps. You WERQ that shit, girl.

the designers couldn’t have built that slip into the dress? I like the dress, but I think it looks messy with the slip.

    Fantastic dress.

Any idea who makes the clutch?

    • Anonymous

It looks an awful lot like a Bottega Veneta clutch.

  • Anonymous

The makeup makes her look consumptive. Nice dress, though.

    • Anonymous

I said the same thing about the make-up. Now I’m wondering if this looked pretty in person, but just didn’t photograph well. Because I’m having a hard time believing that she and her makeup artist were actually going for the pale and sickly look.

      • Anonymous

she looked like she was going for zombie chic to me.

  • http://twitter.com/adoreadora Dora B.

actually, the whole thing is really boring. If your’e that gorgeous and famous, it’s your duty to always look incredibly hot. Enough of this lazy crap.

I hate that color eye shadow on white women.  (I don’t honestly know that it looks good on any woman, but I know it doesn’t on any white ones)  Who looks at eyeshadow and goes “This mimics what my eyelids look like after 3 days without sleep — PERFECT!”

I hate the hair.  It looks like it was supposed to be a one-shoulder thing, but her hair wasn’t long enough.

Dress is… acceptable.  A bit dull, but acceptable.  She could do much better.

    • Anonymous

Yes! On the few occasions I wear eye shadow, I do it to cover up eyelids that look like Theron’s here.

    • MilaXX

If the color wasn’t extended to the inner eye, it could work. It’s because of the exaggerated shape of the shadow  that it off.

      • Anonymous

I agree! The shape looks messy, but brown/bronze eyeshadow works great for me. Uh, I hope.

    • Amanda B

Aww, that makes me sad. Although I agree that the ways it’s been applied here is too heavy, I’ve never felt that anything other than bronze browns suits my pale skin and blue eyes. Darker colours look too heavy and light colours don’t make any impact at all. My eyelids go purple when I lose sleep, so that yellow undertones of this shade balance them out.

      • Anonymous

Bronzes are my friend, too. And I am also white, though with darker coloring than you. Don’t worry, we’re doing it RIGHT. Right? Right.

        • Anonymous

Right. I had a make up application that used the purple. I was hesitant because of the bruising effect it resembles, but she taught me how to do it well.
Bronze, I love! (Just maybe not as heavily.)

  • Sobaika Mirza

UGH the makeup. Still, a great dress.

  • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

So glad she went for the black pumps instead of nude, which I’m sure anyone else would have defaulted to.

  • Anonymous

Cute dress! And she’s freaking gorgeous!

  • Anonymous

The awful eyeshadow and hair make me want to downgrade this from a WERQ to an In. The eye makeup is particularly bad because she had little to no lip or cheek color, so she looks like the walking dead. Crap, now I’m even talking myself out of the In.

  • Anonymous

She is a little bland and boring for my taste here, so I give this look a Wa, wa!

  • Anonymous

She looks great.  She had her hair and makeup done, the dress is interesting and flattering and her accessories are perfect.

  • MilaXX

I really like that dress, My only quibble is that the straps of the lining or slip thing aren’t better disguised at the shoulders. Love the bag.

  • Anonymous

It’s a lovely little dress, but I, too wondered about the slip. It looks a bit sloppy and ruins the look of the dress. I don’t know what to say about her eye make-up other than it looks consumptive or like an amateur make-up artist applied it.

    • Anonymous

noticed the slip straps too. a strapless underdress would have looked better.

  • Anonymous

Yay, Charlize! She’s one of my girl-crushes.
I love the dress. Love the whole look except the make-up. It’s making her look consumptive.
Is she trying to do the side-hair thing? Because that’s a mistake. Still, I’m happy she got a werq from you demanding bitches.

  • Anonymous

The ensemble is great, the hair’s ok, the makeup is terrible!  Needs more (or different) color.  A raspberry lip would have been nice.

  • Anonymous

yeah WERQing it here. i agree about the eye shadow. it doesn’t at all “go” with the simple chic outfit. more like “Cats” makeup.

  • Anonymous

Her hair looks like a mullet. Great dress, though.

  • Anonymous

She looks great (except for the eyeshadow, as you point out). I can’t get excited about the clutch, though, or any purse that’s too small for anything but one key and a tampon.

  • Anonymous

Hate the hair and don’t like the eyeshadow either.  But everything else is sensational.  That dress!  Gorgeous!

  • Anonymous

On my monitor, it looks like she matched the eyeshadow to the clutch…are we doing that now? I don’t mind the look on her and I love the dress…love it. She’s so purdy!

  • Anonymous

Like the dress a lot – but the rest does look like a lack of effort.  (“Oh damn, I have to be where, when?  Okay I have my dress on.  Let’s go.”)

  • Jessica O’Connell

That dress is gorgeous… she looks fantastic!

  • Anonymous

I like the clutch. Um. yeah, that’s about it.

  • seff p

    She’s MR. F

  • Anonymous

She is such a beautiful woman. I wish she was working more. Hate the make-up and the hair but the dress is amah-zing.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Lovely. She looks lovely and classy and you know how I am into that sort of thing. It’s no ‘Dita Von Teese coat moment’, but she looks chic.

  • Anonymous

Agree with all your comments, T Lo.  She looks great, despite the eye shadow.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JQSQJRAL4YYWB2OZNHNUHKZAEY Christopher

Love that dress,  it looks better the closer you get to it.

  • Anonymous

Beautiful dress that looks beautiful on her. If she cropped her hair to just below the chin, she’d look fabulous.

  • Anonymous

I’ve always loved her….beautiful woman in a beautiful dress….AWFUL hair hurts my eyeballs.

  • Anonymous

Ya know what’s worse than mermaid hair?  Someone trying to pull off mermaid hair that doesn’t have the length for it.  Her hair looks ridiculous and so does her eye shadow.

From the neck down…she looks fab.  Great dress & clutch.

  • Anonymous

I know we’re not voting but, neck up – OUT, neck down – IN. Sort of the opposite of SJP the other day….

  • http://twitter.com/april_anita April

Yeah, the dress is beautiful, but the makeup makes her look like she’s dying of consumption.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Stephens-Bassett/1503492602 Karen Stephens Bassett

She looks s-o-o-o much better than Julia Roberts in that other discussion.

  • Anonymous

Yep, she’s WERQ-ing it.  I like that hairstyle/length on her too–it makes her head look better proportioned to her body.  Plus–no Cocker Spaniel!

  • Anonymous

    Her makeup is scary looking

  • Sara__B

From the neck down she’s dressed very appropriately for the event, but from the neck up she’s all wrong. Charlize is very pretty, but even she can’t overcome that sorry hair and makeup.

  • Anonymous

Agree on the WERQ, she looks very chic.  She lacks only a little lip color to make it perfect.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

    Gorgeous dress.

  • Judy_J

I do love this dress.  She looks great.

  • Anonymous

The dress almost looks like one the Duchess of Cambridge wore on her North America tour.

  • Anonymous

    her hair looks utterly ridiculous

  • Anonymous

I like the dress, but her makeup and half-assed hair makes it look like they were trying to get everything above the neck to disappear into the shadows.

Or maybe she’s trying to get a part that involves a tuberculosis ward.  If so, she forgot her blood-tinged coughing handkerchief.

  • Lisa

She normally looks great – I don’t recall a bad look of hers that sticks out in my mind.

  • Anonymous

her skin hair lip eye color is always so strangely monochromatic to me.

  • Anonymous

I dunno, I kinda like the eyeshadow.

I also agree about the slip. The straps look funky.

  • elzatelzabelz

Love the dress and clutch. The make-up is terrible. What does Hollywood have against color on lips?!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

Completely agree. The dress and bag are GORGE! The face, OTOH, looks like she’s sporting the hangover of all hangovers.

How this qualifies as a WERQ I’ll never know.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress and clutch! If I had my own charity and was attending its fundraiser, this is what I’d wear.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, the make-up makes her look a little washed out or something but she still looks great.

  • Anonymous

Don’t like it.  The pumps are dowdy and the dress looks like something you get from Loft to wear to the office holiday party.  It’s not awful, but someone as gorgeous as her should look better than office-hot.

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

Taylor Swift needs to see this and learn from it
