Vogue Italia: Mechanical Dolls

Posted on October 14, 2011

Darlings, here’s your… pretty for the day. And it is pretty, it’s just that it’s also a bit on the creepy and disturbing side, which is just the mood we’re in right now, what with the days getting shorter and Halloween right around the corner. So turn out the lights, light a candle, say “Bloody Mary” in the mirror 3 times, and scroll down, darlings.

fucking amazing.  italian vogue.  nuff said.

  • Anonymous

oh and the peach one with the veil reminds me of daryl hannah (“pris”) in blade runner!

    • Anonymous

YES! That was exactly what my brain was trying to  remember!

    • Eclectic Mayhem

As soon as I saw the ‘dolls’ with mustaches I thought to myself:

“home again, home again, jiggity jig”!

    • http://www.facebook.com/WendyLKaufman Wendy Kaufman

Yep. Stuck out like a neon sign. Loved the nod.

    • Anonymous

      Yeah, that one is cool.

YES im going to have nightmares but they’ll be fucking fabulous ones

  • Anonymous

    Creepy! Love it.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

Kirsi Pyrhönen owns this post, full stop! Such a fabulous model she is, no?

  • Sara__B

Eerie, but entertaining. So many interesting details!

  • Anonymous

I’ll just ring up Tyra and let her know about this FABULOUS photo shoot inspiration.

  • Natasha Fairweather

Yuck. I don’t like the women = dolls thing, and you can barely even see the clothes. Not my taste.

  • Anonymous

Except for the mustaches and goatees, I love it. Come to think of it, I don’t like those on men either.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

That last one looks a little like Manila Luzon.

    • Anonymous

That is exactly what I was about to post.  Perhaps this means Manila has a future in modeling?

  • http://chupatinja.wordpress.com Santa

Wow, this really is very pretty and original, though I agree, a bit scary as well :) Love it!

  • Anonymous

SQUEEEEEE!!!!! I absolutely love automatons! This photospread makes me so happy! You just made my day :D

  • Anonymous

Oh, my. I love the first two (and the peachy one). But I’m not finding the pretty in the rest of them.

  • Anonymous

do men’s fashion magazines do this dehumanizing thing to male models?
I like the ones that reference history, but not the creepy sex doll looks.

  • http://profiles.google.com/singingraisin ali meowmeow

Love this! Dolls creep me out, but this editorial is kind of fabulous. I love how they cover a wide range of dolls and makeup and fashion and still keep it looking like the same shoot.

I think my favorite has to be the 4th picture, with the weird props and goatees, just for the awesome insanity of it, though I also really like that first geisha dolls photo.

  • MilaXX

This matches the dreary weather. I want my regular pretty please.

  • http://www.katymcdermott.com KatyMightHave

Wow. Tonight’s nightmares: sponsored by TLo.

  • Anonymous

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They’re all together ooky…

    Fabulous!

  • Anonymous

The 2 with the dummy are the most disturbing to me, because the dummy looks more lifelike than the models!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FMOMLJSIXEEFBEHXSYCTCXAAZM Huckleberry

the dummy is giving serious face.

  • Anonymous

    Insane. In. Sane.

  • Anonymous

Dr. Who how many weeks ago?  Amy could have rocked some of these outfits.  And yes, still creepy.

  • Anonymous

    I think it’s freakin’ fabulous!

  • Anonymous

creepy.   but i like the clothes.  but totally freaky.

  • Kit Taylor

I love it! All of the “smile pretty for the camera” style editorials get old. It’s nice to see more conceptual and evocative stuff out there

  • http://twitter.com/Menshevixen DH

Did Stephen Moffat design this shoot?

    • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

That was my first thought too; I’m seeing either “The Girl in the Fireplace” or “Night Terrors.”

      • Anonymous

        Definitely “Night Terrors.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=523566011 Dawn Grimes Stough

    seriously love this!

  • http://twitter.com/runlikeagrrl Jenn

OK, I’m sorry but the one in the blue fur coat looks like Clinique from PR.. except more masculine.

  • Anonymous

omgah. this is surely going to be one of the more memorable editorials of the year. LOVE.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

EEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee I couldn’t even finish looking at the pictures!  Once I got to the mustached ones I had to hit the “end” key on my computer.

All I could see was that creepy Dr Who episode with the dolls in that kid’s closet.  Shudder.

  • http://www.facebook.com/WendyLKaufman Wendy Kaufman

LOL. ADORE the “Bladerunner” Pris nod, 3rd form the bottom.

  • Anonymous

normally I like creepy, tim burton-ish stuff, but this is just really creepy.

  • Lisa

Creepy, but kind of cool – except for the ones with the clown doll. Those were just plain creepy!

  • http://twitter.com/thecacera Emily

Love it. Great to see a shoot that isn’t just same old same old.

  • http://twitter.com/thecacera Emily

Love it! It’s great to see a non-conventional photoshoot instead of the regular same old same old.

  • narita_rayna

    gorgeous.

    Scary pretty.

  • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

    eww freakishly disturbing

  • Anonymous

    Love this…visual orgasm

  • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Nobody does dolls the way Hans Bellmer did.  I dare a fashion magazine to go there.  I mean, in reality they already do, with the hypersexualization of underaged models.  But there’s something I find dishonest about the way they mask what they’re doing.

I must be in the minority because I don’t find this creepy at all.  It’s very beautiful, but doesn’t quite go far enough for my tastes.

  • Edward Pavle

How is Allison Harvard from ANTM not in this? This is completely her shtick.

  • Anonymous

    Creepy.  Wonderful, but creepy.  Bravo.

  • Anonymous

Pretty! Pretty… Pretty freakin’ WEIRD, THAT IS!!!! ;-)

  • margaret meyers

    Dee-lightful!  All that visual thinking.

  • Anonymous

Very cool and interesting.  The kind of photos that make me stop and look at details.

    :o)

  • Anonymous

    How… trite

  • Anonymous

Awesome. And exactly the kind of pretty I needed, after being forced to admit that Taylor Swifts cavity inducing outfit actually looked pretty good. Thank you, TLo.

  • Anonymous

Creepy, fun, and fab. Using the Louis Vuitton was inspired.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Spirit-Doll/100000655514272 Spirit Doll

Very creative and you applied much effort, well done. Spirit

  • Anonymous

Hey, I LOVE horror/creepy stuff, and this is squicking me out a bit. *shudders*  Especially the black/white ones above the geishas…they look like refugees from a Tool video.

I actually really dig the last picture, though.

  • Bree The Vole

Nightmarish, but AMAZING. Kirsi, being the strange and stunning creature she is, is perfect for this, and the other model is great too.

  • Lattis

This is beautiful, eerie, wonderful. Love the already mentioned Blade Runner nod. The photos remind me of a more lush and romantic version of my favorite mechanical doll nightmare fuel:  Street of Crocodiles

Photo #5 is creepy as hell! Some of this (the 3rd to the last and last pic) is cool but I can barely get past that one pic. Heebie jeebies!

  • http://www.manoneileen.com Manon Eileen

    Creepy indeed, but very pretty.

  • Anonymous

This is freaky as hell and I LOVE it.

  • Anonymous

I love that Vogue Italia always prints the more off-beat shoots! and I generally love Tim Walker shoots.
Can’t say I find it particularly creepy.

Wonderful, thank you for showing us :)

  • Anonymous

this is intriguing and so strangely beautiful that i know i’ll return to look at it many times.  i inherited my mom’s antique doll collection and i see some of those dolls here.  also reminds me of a favorite story when i was young, where one day all the dolls in the little girl’s room come to life and have a parade down her street.  enchanting.

my favorite photo is the one with the two dolls dressed in blue with white stockings and black shoes.  their legs look just like those old  porcelain dolls with the socks and shoes painted on.  especially the way the right hand doll is standing, like she’s about to fall over but  still rigid and awkward.  it’s hard to get those dolls to balance without a stand. fascinating.

    • Anonymous

Exactly how I feel. Without the inherited antique doll collection (lucky you!).

Whoever styled the set took such care with the details–it’s like entering another very old, very beautiful world. The lighting and the model styling–perfect. It’s really wonderful.

    • Anonymous

I think that’s the strongest picture in the group. I stared at it for awhile and then looked back a few times. The models’ (lack of) expressions and stance, the styling, lighting, clothing, color, everything — perfection. The ceiling drop is clearly seen just above their heads, which gives it a specific dollhouse feel. This is a brilliant shot.

Yuck , where’s Chuckie?  Good ad for not buying any of the clothes.

imagining we’ll see something like this on ANTM next season…

    • Anonymous

      They’ve already done it.

Yes, to my everlasting shame, I watch ANTM.

      • Pennymac

I watch it, too. *sheepish grin*  And ANTM was the first thing I thought of when I was this…

  • Vaniljekjeks

This spread is seriously spooky.  Something about clowny doll faces make me shudder uncontrollably.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1091753514 Kelli Anderson Taylor

The scariest thing about this is how skinny the second model’s legs look.

  • Anonymous

“Les oiseaux dans la charmille …”

    • Anonymous

Yes!   I thought of Hoffmann immediately, too.   (Of course, it’s in my head as I’m seeing it at Lyric next week.)

      • Anonymous

Aha! I knew someone on this board would get the reference. And I just did Hoffmann this past June, so it wasn’t a great leap for my mind to go there.

        • Anonymous

Singer?  Orchestra?  Conductor?  Costume design?   Etc?

          • Anonymous

Singer in the chorus. Also helped coach the French.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

If the idea of an editorial shoot in a fashion magazine is ultimately to promote and sell the clothes, this would make me run screaming in the other direction.  Sure, its an interesting and well presented notion, but who wants to pay oodles of cash to look like a bizarre toy?

  • Anonymous

    Just in time for Halloween

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

Love it!  Bizzare – the fake/extra arms and hands are wild.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

    A little creepy?  A LITTLE!!?!?!?!?!!!?!

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf UltimaEsperenza

    Truly beautiful.  Oddly sensual.

  • Anonymous

    WAY creepy.  But gorgeous!

  • Anonymous

Third pic from the bottom is stunning.  I would hang that photo in my house.

  • Ruth Preston

Really glad I didn’t see these until morning. The clowny thing with the creepy tiny hat put me over the edge..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

It’s such a strong editorial gimmick that I don’t even see the clothes.

  • Anonymous

Maybe I’m warped, but I don’t see anything at all creepy or disturbing about any of these.

  • Anonymous

love it!  and it reminds me–wish you guys were watching/blogging about “american horror story.”  pretty cool and creepy show, but everything is better with tlo commentary :)

  • Anonymous

Singer in the chorus. Also helped coach the French.

  • http://twitter.com/rmcgrudiva RL McGruder

I’m actually impressed by this – I like the fetish aspect of it. Still creeped out in my gut, though.

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

    Yeah, PRETTY CREEEEEPY!   (shudder)

  • Anonymous

Clever…I guess? But a little demeaning. And now I’ll have to sleep with the lights on.

  • Anonymous

I think it’s fantastic. Art supposed to make you feel something, not just scroll and debate should you buy that dress or not… whatever these images triggering inside of you, they won’t leave you indifferent….

  • http://twitter.com/lynnco Lynn Cominsky

Reminds me of the world of Syberia, a computer game with lots of mechanical dolls and adventures.

  • Addicted2Glamour

Eeeks. Now I’m afraid I’ll be seeing these images in my next acid flashback…

    • https://me.yahoo.com/a/dLUE.9h6zdoHMLprP6AQrSQpKt0CZys-#e58b4 tom

      Tee Hee, likewise.

  • Anonymous

its so fucked up but i love it except for the creepy clown.  he is what bad dreams are made of.  pennywise anyone?

  • Anonymous

I saw this in an episode on “Criminal Minds” recently. The chick who did it would have tea parties with the women she kidnapped, drugged and dressed up like dolls (see above). Nice to see they got a modelling gig out of it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

    Well done! Bravo!!

  • http://impishdiy.com Impish DIY

    I love every photo!

  • M Carlson

Ack, ventriliquist dummies. Consider me freaked out.

    Looks like a Cure video . . . I love it
