Pairs Division: Wormald and Hough

Posted on October 06, 2011

We never thought we’d see the day when we’d be writing about the clothes worn at the premiere of Footloose. If someone had told us this 5 years ago, we’d have had them committed.

SHE: Is apparently doing a salute to showgirls from the 1930’s. She should have on a pair of t-strap tap shoes and a little cap with a sequined dollar sign sticking out of it to complete the picture. Despite our bitchiness, we like the look more than we probably should. She’s young, so she can pull off the so-called formal shorts. The matching top actually helps to serve the illusion that she’s wearing a mini-dress. We just think she should have worn a belt. Hate the Silly Putty shoes (but you knew that already) and hate the one-shoulder mermaid hair. She had a good base to work from, but the detailing is letting her down. Score: 6.5/10.

HE: Looks like he’s not used to wearing a suit, so we have to give him props for wearing a 3-piece. The tie is kind of dull, but the shoes are covetable. The hem on the pants is perhaps a half-inch too long, which, all things considered is not bad for someone who’s new to the red carpet. Score: 7.5/10.

Combined Score: 7/10. Julianne? Get some education on the value of effective accessorizing. Kenny? Don’t be afraid of a brightly colored tie. Now go. Enjoy your little movie thing.

    He’s no Kevin Bacon.

    • Sobaika Mirza

THAT is an understatement. And this is coming from someone who wasn’t alive for the original Footloose.

    • Ginger

Amen to that.  Ren is not supposed to be clean-cut and wholesome looking.  Give me a little edge!

      • Anonymous

Maybe he’s a little grungier in the film?

    • Anonymous

There is no Kevin Bacon but Kevin Bacon.

    • Kim Score

you got that right. I’m sad that they felt the need to remake a classic movie for the new generation.  How about a rerelease of the original?  I’d rather see that on the big screen. Based on the previews I saw at the theater, they basically added an extra scene in the beginning, ruined the drive-in scene “dancing in the sheets” with choreographed hoochie dancing and the guy they cast for Ren just isn’t the right fit.  Next they’re destroying Dirty Dancing since Hollyweird can’t come up with any more original ideas.

  • SuzanneCitere

OMG I know him!! His dance teacher is one of my dearest friends and I’ve known Kenny since he is a little boy… I got verklempt seeing him making to the BIG TIME… aka, TLo’s Pairs Division!!!

    • Anonymous

My friend’s daughters both take dance at the Gold School, where he’s an alum. They’re all so excited for him!

  • Vaniljekjeks

I really like the runway version of the shorts with the black tights and shoes.  Would look fabulous with a belt.  I am a black tights junkie, so I might be a bit biased.

    • Anonymous

I’m no black tights junkie, but in this case I think they would have helped her look more interesting and less “I’m a starlet so my publicist told me to get the spray-tanned legs”.

  • Anonymous

So sorry, but I disagree. I think this is another outfit that makes her look a little dumpy. She has an insane body, and while I am not a fan of the skin-tight-gyno-exam dress, I just cannot believe that with all the designers and stunning dresses out there, this was the best she could come up with to wear to the premier of HER movie.

The hair is horrible, as are the shoes. She needs Gays NOW.

    • ecallaw

She has some of the best legs ever, and they are not looking all that great here from the straight-on pictures.  Definitely not what she was going for.

      • Anonymous

I know I loved herbon DWTS and was so excited to see her rock some runway fashions. Part of the problem with this is that she is a little teensy thing. The runway model, besides the blackntights, has at least 4 inches of leg and arm on JH, and that makes all the difference in the world. And her legs look untoned, which is impossible to believe.

  • Anonymous

Boy you two are generous. He looks like he just left the office and she looks like she’s on her way to tap class at the Ginger Rogers Academy. They don’t even look interesting enough to score.

    • Bridget Smith

You know people who wear three-piece suits to the office? Where do you live and how can I get there?

      • Joseph Lamour

I mean, I do. But I’m a fashion writer. LOL.

  • Anonymous

He seems very gentlemanly….I like that.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I’m just thinking with a slamming body and a movie premier, I would not be wearing a jumper.  But hey, that’s just me.

    • Anonymous

I know. We see people (who shouldn’t) dress in these teeny tight dresses and she seems to wear things that don’t really show off her body. It’s not that she needs to dress slutty but it’s interesting and maybe a little cool that this doesn’t seem to matter to her. That outfit, especially in the last frame, almost makes her look like she’s got a protruding tummy.

  • narita_rayna

i wish she had worn the black tights with it, cause that outfit is more adorable than it should be.  i just dont like the way she’s styled it.  it looks cheap now.

also, this movie needs to die faster than “lambada, the forbidden dance’.

  • Anonymous

I snorted with glee when I clicked the 5 years ago link. Bitch Mommies is classic!

Her outfit and shoes are interesting individually but I can’t work up any interest in her or this movie so back to classic TLo clips!

    • Bridget Smith

The shoes are actually much better than most nude pumps – the pointy toe and the stripes on the heel lend them a little more interest. But I think this outfit needs some sort of punctuation at the bottom.

  • tom

The clothes are ok.  Can Hollywood no longer come up with new ideas? This remake is like making a remake  of “Cabaret” with Steve O and Katy Perry.

  • Sara Munoz

She wears such tacky, skin-baring stuff every week on TV. We’ve seen her body. She doesn’t feel the need to really show it off here. I can appreciate that. Especially since she is playing a teenager. And maybe the hair is a tribute to the 80’s. Not to mention, she is SMILING.

    I’d bump her up to a 7.5, maybe 8.

  • Anonymous

The neckline on her doesn’t have the loose, airy fit it has on the model. In fact, it makes her look as if she’s been beheaded.

  • Anonymous

I thought the same thing…this girl needs a belt.  The shoes are boring and I will never understand the hair.  I spend so much time pulling my hair back off my shoulders.  Why would you want that on purpose?

At least he looks like he’s having fun.  I wouldn’t be tacking up any of his pictures from Tiger Beat on my walls.

And if I want to watch “Footloose,” I certainly won’t be watching this one.  I understand that remakes have always been made, but I also think that you don’t remake one that is a classic, iconic movie.

  • Anonymous

Question: Is this a remake or a film version of the stage musical? I was thinking the latter.

    • Bridget Smith

I’ve been wondering this too. I’ve been in the play twice (in a period of like 2 years – my town was apparently Footloose-mad – so I wasn’t the only crossover. Hilariously, the guy who played Willard in the first played the Reverend in the second), so I actually like the musical better than the movie. Partly because I think the soundtrack is fantastic.

    • Ali

It was originally supposed to be a film version of the stage musical, but when Zach Efron left, I think that was scrapped?

      • Leslie Streeter

Saw it last night. It’s almost a shot for shot remake of the original, down to the VW bug and the prom outfits. Almost the same script. But with 75 percent more racial diversity. And a Quaid.

        • Anonymous

Thank you. If it’s just a remake, I think I’ll give it a miss.

  • Anonymous

He looks OK, except for the hair. Looks like it’s covered with varnish.
She looks pretty bad from the hair on down. Like the runway version much more. 7/10 is way too generous.
    How about 7/5?

Back to the good old days: Bitch Mommies

  • Charlotte Horseman

Only a little tiny dancer could pull that outfit off – and she’s it and she does it.   He… cute guy in a suit – that’s all I ever see usually.  But I’m learning to look at fit…and seems pretty right on too.

  • Judy S

Query from someone who has never seen her: when she has her mouth closed I see Catherine Deneuve. Is it the eye makeup that does that?

    • MilaXX

  • Anonymous

I think the nude shoes work in this case.  Is there a rule about 3-piece suits? I would have thought that 3-piece suits should be reserved for the workplace.

    • Bridget Smith

Ok, apparently everyone but me lives in a world where men wear three-piece suits to the office. This makes me sad, as I LOVE THEM. I think they’re so hot.

      • Anonymous

I don’t live there either, Bridget, but that’s how I picture the corporate world. I definitely don’t see men in social situations wearing 3-piece suits. I live in more of a sport jacket world, if that.

        • Anonymous

God help me, I live in more of a Teva sandals and Columbia fleece pullover kind of world.  Sigh.  I’m going to go drive an hour and a half to a mall tomorrow.

  • Terence Ng

Woah, for a minute I thought she was Aubrey O’Day…back when she had her shit reasonably together.

  • Susan Collier

Footloose. The question is: Will Julliane Hough be rocking the camel toe jeans as well as Lori Singer did throughout the original?

  • Anonymous

Note to fashion industry:  stop trying to make formal shorts happen.

  • Anonymous

The best thing about both outfits combined are his shoes. The suit is nice and he looks cute. I won’t comment on Hough except to say she needs gays stat.

  • Anonymous

I think her ensemble reads a bit frumpy. Maybe a belt would help – maybe. Digging the Jerry Hall hair, though.

  • MilaXX

Considering some of her RC efforts I don
t think this one is bad. Hate the shoes, but I’d bump her up to at least a 7.25/10nHis score seems about right.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think that’s her color AT ALL. I would have been ok with it had she chosen a more flattering color. The one-shoulder hair is awful and I think some color on her lips would have done wonders for her. I agree with TLo that the right belt would have really helped this look.
He looks good, but as someone else here said, he ain’t no Kevin Bacon.
TLo, are his shoes D&G too? They’re fab.

    • Anonymous

Funny–I think she looks GREAT in that red!

And ditto, he ain’t no Kevin Bacon.  This guy doesn’t look like he came from a big city at all.

  • Anonymous

Credit where credit is due, they look both like fully dressed grown ups AND like fresh-faced youth, appropriate to the movie. Bonus half point on the combined score for pulling that one off.

Her orange-red garments  should look hideous but they don’t. I don’t know how that worked, youthful bods have been ruined by bunchily tailored tops and formal shorts before. I’d give her a full 7.5 for somehow making that look acceptable.

Him, I’m tempted to upgrade half a point for great shoes, but will leave it at 7.5.

Bonus half point added to combined score gives them 8.0/10.  Skewing high, but I think they, or someone on the team, deserves it.

  • Laura Schultz

Julianne seems to be dressing old for her age. HATE side hair. A lot.

    • Anonymous

Hate that side hair too. It’s so obviously “look at my long hair”.
Worse, I see a lot of women walking down the street with their hair like that now. The more ridiculous ones tilt their heads to the side that the hair is on, presumably to make it look longer, and just walk around like that. It makes me want to approach them and ask “what’s wrong with your head?”

    • DrJulieAnn

Random thoughts that ramble through my mind whenever I see her:  I wonder if she dresses older for her age because Ryan Seacrest is so much older than her and an entertainment industry powerhouse that she is trying to look older than she really is (kind of like Betty Draper did after she married Henry Francis).  My guess is that she is much savvier and mature than she lets on but it shows up in her clothing choices (she was a pro as a young teenager and was engaged to be married when she was only 18).

  • Anonymous

No, no, no, no, no! It’s the premier of her movie. He’s wearing a three piece suit. I don’t care how fancy or expensive they are, they are SHORTS! That’s an automatic fail. 0 out of 10.

  • Stacy

I like the runway look better than how Julianne wore the dress. The black tights and booties look so much better than silly putty shoes.

  • Bernadette Moke

He looks like he doesn’t even like her! He should stand a bit closer to her next time.

  • Anonymous

THE perspective in that first pic is so off.  It looks like he is real and holding a doll/cut-out up in the air at the waist.

Love the color but the shorts just don’t work for me.  I don’t think I noticed “Shoes by Ruthie Davis” before but now the day after Chris March’s show her name jumped out at me.

His suit looks fine but I cannot see this guy in that role

  • Anonymous

I think she looks great – she could use a belt, but I like the whole look, even (grudgingly) the shoes.

  • Anonymous

wow…I’m 3 for 3 on my critique of Julianne…hate the mermaid hair, needs a belt, and ugh, those silly putty shoes.  That’s almost verbatim what I said to myself before I scrolled down.  I kind of think the shorts make her look fat, which I know she is not.  I love the black tights on the model with this outfit…but since it’s still warm-ish, I understand not wanting to go that heavy with the look, and besides, she does have quite the set of gams to show off.  7.5

He…the tie and shirt collar really bug me…a lot!  White shirt and a colorful tie would have really amp-ed up the look.  Nice suit…seems to fit well.  I love his shoes and want them!  8.5

    8 combined.

  • Anonymous

The blouse part of this garment is lovely. The rest is … silly.

  • accidental housewife

I just can’t with the formal shorts/romper/whatever-the-hell-it-is. Even the model looks bad. Jerry Hall is the only person in recent history who can pull off the mermaid hair; everyone else should just stop it. And despite the striped heel, those shoes are deadly dull and the exact opposite of the right color. I have to agree with Bittybis upthread. Hough gets a 0/10.

He’s cute, although not particularly interesting. I kind of love that he’s wearing a three piece suit. He’s pulled together and looks like he spent more than two minutes getting ready. I’ll give him a 7.5.

I can’t blame him for not being Kevin Bacon, or even for being in a movie that didn’t have to be and shouldn’t have been remade. I imagine any guy in his position would jump at the chance.

  • Anonymous

I thought this movie had already come and gone from the theater.  I’m so confused.  Is this for the DVD release?  Did it go straight to DVD?

  • Anonymous

I like her outfit. I think it was a good choice on her part to move away from the shiny/tight/short motif for young starlets. The movie itself looks trashy enough, I think it was a good choice for her to choose “classy” for the premiere. It’s a nice way for her to set herself apart from every other young blonde actress in Hollywood.

Granted, there are still some issues. But overall, I like it and I like the sentiment behind it.

  • Anonymous

I was so convinced that was Blake Lively that I even read it as Lively, not Houghton. The power of the mind.

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

I love Julianne’s shorts and blouse so much but she is not doing them justice. HATE the hair. Basically, it’s this fabulous little outfit on the runway and Julianne turned it into something cheap looking. I fault her for looking bad, and I double- fault her for ruining something fabulous.

  • Anonymous

Having never heard of him, and barely of her, I glanced at these two and thought, very nice job. But we’re here to nitpick I suppose. His tie is boring, Jacque Pennier sells more attractive ties. But her silly putty shoes, for which I share TLo’s sentiments, have little black bands on the heels to add perkiness. Her entire outfit says perky, in the best possible way. Lovely color on her. I don’t mind the hair, it’s a current fashion for those lucky enough to be follically(?) blessed. Nice shade of blonde, no roots showing, not fried, clean. What’s to dislike?

    Combined 8.5

  • JoannaOC

we’ve now see the Footlose remake TV ad twice. Each time my kids says, “WHY? Why did they do that? I don’t even LIKE Footloose but this is just wrong!”
I feel the same way about what Julianne has done to herself here–it’s as if she has applied a beauty eraser.

  • Anonymous

“Formal Shorts” are NOT OK.  EVER.  HATE.

  • Anonymous

    Re: the styling

She is no Farrah Fawcett, Disco Queen and he is no Joseph Gordon-Levitt circa “Inception”. Ugh.

  • Anonymous

Other than the, um, “fit” of his pants in the, um, “downunder” region, nothing about either of these is memorable or worth writing home about.  Post when he does something in his skivvies……

  • Anonymous

please let me never see that rompers set again.  ugh.

  • Suzie Vazquez

It’s scary that she can almost pull that off. But I’m glad she didn’t.

  • { edi } ilovetrash

    they remade footloose.

  • Anonymous

She needs the tights. It looks so pedestrian without them

  • Phyllis Craine

Kenny is  trained in all forms of dance.  Wait till you see him in action – he is really really talented.  Been watching him dance since he was a teenager.
