Michelle Obama in Marc by Marc Jacobs

Posted on October 21, 2011

Hey, First Girl! What are you gonna wear to do some fall campaigning and pretend you’re picking out pumpkins?

U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama arrive at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Virginia.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Clemence Striped Sweater

U.S. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama pick Halloween pumpkins at Wood’s Orchard in Hampton, Virginia.

Ooooh. That’ll do. We love that we have a First Lady who wears Marc Jacobs. Love the colors on her. Those pants look great on her, showcasing the First Booty to perfect effect. If you’ve got a little water in the basement and your legs are long, a straight-leg pant will never steer you wrong. A shame they pull a little bit across the front, though. Also a shame that she felt the need to rely on another of her belts. We really don’t think she needed it here. Her waist doesn’t need to be defined in a shirt like this. It should fall exactly right on her, given the shape of her upper half and the fact that the hem hits right at the top of her hip. Plus we don’t really think the bright blue adds anything to the look. Still, we LOVE this ensemble on her. A perfectly chic daytime outfit.

Oh no, Mrs. O :( I don’t like the color scheme on her (although it’s pretty autumnal) and horizontal stripes are never good.

    • Anonymous

It’s pretty autumnal AND she’s picking Pumpkins…go figure! The belt’s just whatevs but it’s not THAT offensive.

    • Anonymous

The belt has got to go.

    • Geno Boggiatto

What’s wrong with horizontal stripes when you’ve got the body for it?

      • Sobaika Mirza

Generally speak, I don’t think anyone besides models or Olsens have the body for it. But here I think they’re making her look broader in the shoulders. Maybe if she’d gone a size smaller with the shirt (looks kind of baggy) and forgone the belt.

        • http://profiles.google.com/h6davis Hannah Davis

Ooh, I disagree! Horizontal stripes are totally wearable on non-model body types. Depends on the width, color scheme, and their placement on the garment.

        • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

Totally disagree. Horizontal stripes help accentuate your curves. Her shoulders aren’t that broad they’re proportionate.

        • Anonymous

AGREED! I think the stripes could world if they were THINNER and without that fug belt. it is unnecessary, it’s not cinching the waist nor is it adding any fashion value.

That outfit’s cute, & I love her hair, but. Girl. That belt. It’s not clashing exactly, but it just – I can’t look at anything else.

    • Anonymous

With you on this. Her hair is so great. That belt is amazingly wrong and all I see.

  • Anonymous

Great, as usual. LOVE the pants.

Don’t like the color of the pants and the belt. But I love that sweater!

  • Anonymous

    Love. Her. Hate the belt.

  • Anonymous

    That belt is killing me.

  • Anonymous

i always love seeing her no matter what

  • Anonymous

The shirt is cute.  I’m not a fan of the pants, but it could be the fit throwing me off.  No belt needed.  Love her hair and makeup.

    • Anonymous

I agree- her hair looks fantastic like this.

  • Anonymous

Bad belt and I hate to say it but those pants are not doing her any favors.  They are pulling and making her look wider than she is.

    • Anonymous

The pants are so close to being right, but the fit is off enough to make her look less like the tall drink of water she is.

  • http://twitter.com/CurlyIsCuter Margot Brose

LOVE. HUH. And whoever does her hair should be cloned and distributed across the world for the good of mankind’s follicles. Her hair has looked so nice lately.

  • Anonymous

Having that belt on that shirt is about as necessary as putting on a raincoat to shower.

  • Anonymous

No likey. I didn’t like the style or the color and the belt was awful.

  • Sara__B

The random belt looks silly, adds nothing. Other than that, it’s a great outfit for choosing pumpkins while being photographed.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Minus the belt, that’s a presidential IN.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The POTUS is totally checking out her assets in the last picture.

    • MilaXX

I love that he is often looking at her like she’s the hottest woman on earth.

    • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

Of course he is! He’s thinking about working that booty like it’s part of the jobs bill!

    • Anonymous

See – and I thought he was checking out the pumpkins but he was really checking out her pumpkin!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I’m disagreeing about the belt.  But I’ll take her fashion over any of the previous first ladies! Looking good Lady O!

  • Anonymous

You like the color of the shirt? I think that taupe kinda washes her out. Love the blue and red, and I love the pants, too.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    I love her.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like pointy toed shoes with such a casual combination. I see this with clogs or loafers or a cute low boot in suede. Not pointy leather pumps. This isn’t going in my FLOTUS scrapbook.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

NO to the belt and sweater!!! The belt is so unnecessary, the stripes do nothing for her coloring!

  • Anonymous

She’s getting her inner Princeton Tiger on!!
Tiger tiger tiger… sis sis boom boom bah…. Michelle, Michelle..MICHELLE!!!

  • Anonymous

I hate the pants on here.  Lose the belt.

  • Anonymous

    ahahah.  First Booty.  Loveit.

  • Anonymous

Would be SO perfect without the belt.  Love her.

  • Anonymous

Water in the basement!?  Bahahaha, that’s fantastic.

I’m loving the sweater, but it’s a bit of a beast to pair with something.  You can’t really go with navy or khaki and I’m happy to see she didn’t, but I’m not sold on the rust colored pants she went with.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OQAEI5VIBLXN6YAONCDMUQVRBI Sydney Rose

Belt ruins what would otherwise be a great look on her. More casual shoes would have been better too.

  • Anonymous

Very much agreed on the belt, and I think I’d prefer the pants in an even darker shade of rust to try to avoid the obvious seasonal scheme.  Long, long legs!  The President’s pants seem to be doing one heckova static cling.  I know someone in the Secret Service – maybe we need to include Static Guard in their kit.  Is it he in the shopping pix, too, tie off and sleeves rolled?

A photo op, but so nice to see her carrying off ‘casual’ mostly so well.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UH5XQGXDKLXDSVGB626B53KXBA linda

I totally agree!  if this were pairs division, he would be dragging Shelly’s score.

  • Anonymous

” a little water in the basement.” Ha! Never hear it put that way. Well said, Boys. As a tall girl with more than a little water in my basement, I can appreciate a straight leg pant as much as our Shelley O. Hate the belt-not needed. Love the pants. Covet the shoes. Like the sweater. Love the way he’s looking at her. How cute are they?!?!

  • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Nothing makes my day like seeing the smiles on POTUS and FLOTUS! DAMN I sound cheesy, but whatever. It’s true. Shoes- yes (I’m surprising myself here- normally I’m not into that style). Hair, yes. Belt, meh. Makeup- lovely.

  • MilaXX

Agreed, like the look, don’t think she needs the belt. She looks cool and casual. Do you have a close up on the shoe? I think I love it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

HATE the belt, otherwise it’s an adorable outfit.

  • Judy_J

Wish she’d left the belt at home.  Aside from that, she looks fabulous.  Chic and casual, perfect for an autumn day.

  • http://twitter.com/MuseofIre MuseofIre

Good lord, really? I don’t hate the colors in the shirt, but they do nothing for her. And I do hate the color of the pants, which does not match or even “go with” the orange in the shirt.

  • Now I am The Bee

Well it’s ok–but I wore the same outfit to high school in 1971.

  • Anonymous

Looks like her husband is checking her out, too….oh how I love a sexy White House

  • Anonymous

Love it, but ewww, the belt.

  • Anonymous

    “First Booty”–heh.

I’m sorry to say that I don’t care for this outfit, and I really dislike that top. She really didn’t need the belt.

  • Anonymous

She has definitely lost weight – not that she needed to; but she looks good. However, I can’t stand ‘themed’ clothes (I’m looking at you, Cathy Cambridge), such as wearing military-inspired to ‘inspect’ the troops (whatever that is), or say, orange to go pick pumpkins. And the blue belt is terrible. She has such an attachment to belts in general, doesn’t she? She needs a belt intervention. And agree shoes should be more casual.

Sigh. I love her, her hair looks fantastic, and I love that she wears Marc Jacob – but if we were voting – OUT. Problems continue with the daytime ensembles….

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Love the hair, love the smile, love the colors… hate the belt.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

I don’t even understand the logic behind that belt, but otherwise I love.

  • Anonymous

I’m with everyone else–love the hair, love the outit, hate the belt.

Still, I should look half this good when I’m out choosing pumpkins!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Hate the belt, but the rest is pretty good.

  • Anonymous

    Isn’t she lovely?

  • Anonymous

Now you’ve depressed me; if she’s got a little water in the basement, then mine is totally flooded.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B53PQYXSJR4YJBV3J6BWYSICRQ Jamie

“water in the basement” – love it!

  • Anonymous

Yes boys yes! The belt is wrong–not needed and shiny blue wrong. But great look without that. Go FLOTUS

  • Anonymous

The sweater is a little school picture circa 1974 for me, but she is working it pretty well. Love the pants and shoes. Hate the belt. All wrong with that sweater.

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Really? I think this looks dowdy and the belt just makes it worse. Maybe if the top had been longer and more fitted but this is too boxy. Hair looks fantastic though.

  • Anonymous

    That damned belt!

  • Anonymous

I love the fact that she can send call-outs to the fashionistas, all the while pumping a look that most American women think they could buy at Dillards.

    Go FLOTUS.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

It pains me to say this because I love me my Shelley O. but this is not working for me. The pants don’t fit great, I think the shirt and pants clash in the worst possible way and there is no explanation for why the belt is there when she had to have passed at least 20 people on her way out of the big house any one of which could have said, ‘Ms. Obama, hand over the belt.’ But I forgive her. Because that is what close girlfriends do.

  • Anonymous

Does anyone else think the pant zipper is ending/starting in a weird spot?  Like it’s short?  I love the idea of the pants but I think something is going on with that inseam.  I don’t think there’s a saggy crotch but it sort of looks that way with the short zipper. I think it’s an awesome outfit.  Love the color.

  • Anonymous

    Belt is wrong.

I don’t think those colors suit her at all at all.

She’s not suited to autumnal colors.

  • Anonymous

    Belt is soooo painful!

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Might have been a little dull without the belt, but jewelry would have been better, probably. Love the colors and the top.

  • Anonymous

Very chic but my eyes went to the belt first, not good.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

She could improve the look by a factor of 10 just by losing the belt. She’s so wonderful, love her! Can we imagine Laura Bush in this outfit picking out pumpkins?

  • http://www.facebook.com/brendan.foehr Brendan Foehr

Great, but the blue belt moves her into 1970s Sesame Street guest star territory.

  • Anonymous

The stem is not a handle.  People get very angry when you break their stems off.  Joys of working retail:  You notice her browsing errors before the belt.

  • Anonymous

Why, or why, does she have to wear a belt all of the time??? The belt doesn’t even match, and the sweater looks much more awesome on the model because there is no belt!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=723599046 Carol Wyatt

Horrible.  Just horrible.  That shirt is the definition of unflattering – it’s just plain UGLY.

  • Anonymous

I normally HATE belted t-shirts and it does look as out-of-place as any other weirdo in a belted t-shirt but she still looks really good here and she obviously tried it without the belt- I feel with that colour scheme it might have been a bit frumpy on its own? Love the colours though. Love the pants. Gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

”If you’ve got a little water in the basement”
    What does that mean?

    • Anonymous

it means “If you have a big ass.”

  • Geno Boggiatto

The belt is a disaster. Otherwise she’s looking very chic, but casual enough not to look ridiculous picking out pumpkins!!

  • margaret meyers

    Botox?

  • Anonymous

    Egad, I hate that outfit.
Ugly shirt, and it doesn’t go with the pants. And a belt is just wrong.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think I have ever seen a First Lady’s booty before. I hadn’t seen a First Lady’s armpit until Mrs. O showed us hers, either.
I guess there is a first for everything but I am not sure I want to see them, thankfully the one of them was covered with cloth.

Hate the belt but the outfit’s colors are nice for the event.

    • Anonymous

I don’t like the fit but then I never really like her fit in clothes. She needs a new fitter in my opinion.
I do like the rust colors for the occasion.

  • elzatelzabelz

Really? You love the look? I agree that the belt is stupid. But, I disagree with you on the pants. They are ill fitting and make her look big (which she isn’t). Not my favorite.

  • Anonymous

I think that’s about as bad as I’ve ever seen her look.  Then again, maybe it’s just that hideous belt.

  • Anonymous

Love the pants, love the shirt, HATE the combo.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rachel.council Rachel Council

Oh, so close! Just remove the belt and I love it.

  • Anonymous

Her hair is GORGEOUS in these shots, as is her makeup. I’d love to see her hair done just like that for a formal occasion. I hate that belt, though. The pants unfortunately do pull. But overall, she looks good, always beautiful and warm. Best smile ever. POTUS should have dressed down a bit, I think.

  • Anonymous

Not a fan of the belt. But damn, they are a ridiculously good looking couple.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

    everything but the belt.

  • Anonymous

    Loose the belt.

  • Anonymous

Um, no Shelley O. The colors are fine but the way the pants pull across the front and that belt ruin it. Hair and makeup are beautiful.

  • Anonymous

Ditch the belt and change the shoes

  • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

Woah it’s cute but it’s very reinterpreted 70′s especially with the belt.

  • Anonymous

HATE the belt, LOVE everything else. You go, FLOTUS!

  • Anonymous

These are the cutest spokes models we’ve had since the Kennedy’s for sure.

  • Anonymous

Love everything about this look (especially those shoes!) except the belt.

  • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

The belt was bad but she looks good.

  • Anonymous

She is such a gorgeous woman.  However, these 2 pieces just clash…the colors in the top just do NOT go with the pants color.  Ugh.  I’d be walking back in the door to change the combination if that were me.  I didn’t even see the belt (altho it’s too high and unneeded) because all I could see was how the colors didn’t work together.  But, she still is gorgeous, no matter what.

  • Joey Melliza

what’s with the belt mrs. o?

  • Anonymous

Lots of elements aren’t working here.  She needs to ditch the belt, which is adding nothing good.  Hate the pointy-toed shoes.  Something chic and more casual would have looked better.  The top’s shade of orange doesn’t match or contrast well with the rust color of the pants.  And the pants don’t fit.  They’re pulling across the front.   And while I don’t think spouses need to color-coordinate their clothing, it’s maybe not a bad idea when in the public eye.  Her clothes sort of clash with the color of his tie.

  • Anonymous

Agreed about the belt.  She looks good. But that pumpkin patch doesn’t seem to have the best selection of pumpkins, eh?

  • Anonymous

The belt ruins it but that high waist look is her trademark.

  • Anonymous

    I love her shoes!

  • Anonymous

    The First Booty is awesome.

  • Anonymous

Meh, I’m not loving this one.

Not quite working. And she looks wan and washed-out. Needs more make-up or maybe more sleep.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=527150091 Pat Biswanger

That belt is awful, but it’s the only thing that takes this outfit out of Kohls-ness.
