Michael Pitt for AnOther Man Magazine

Michael Pitt for AnOther Magazine
Michael Pitt featured in the AW11 issue of AnOther Man, photographed by Hedi Slimane and styled by Alister Mackie.

If we’re being honest – and let’s face it; you wouldn’t want us any other way – we have to say that Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Pitt isn’t a particularly good-looking man. He is, however, an extremely interesting-looking man, with his almost cartoonishly large, round eyes, jutting jawline, and babypout lips, all of which combine in pictures to make him something a bit greater than the sum of its parts. You can’t take your eyes off of him, and for an actor, that’s probably the very best quality you could ask for. It’s something you either have or don’t. In these pics, he’s got it in spades; a smoldering, dangerous intensity like a young Jimmy Cagney. He’d be a terrible fashion model because you’d never even notice what he was wearing.

Not attractive? TLo, you apparently don’t have ovaries.

Other than the second photo, where he looks as though the makeup artist applied too many coats of lipstick, this is one damn sexy man.

      • Anonymous

Seriously. Is it just a lady thing? Cause I’ve always found him uncomfortably attractive.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

I don’t find him attractive either, but I’ll always think of him as the greasy kid in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

        • Anonymous

No ovaries here.. I loves him!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

    You nailed it–James Cagney.

  • MilaXX

Really guys? I have him kinda hot. I do agree he’s lack the chameleon like ability to blend that is beneficial as a model, but I think he’s one of the best looking men on the show.

  • Anonymous

Yes, he definitely has a memorable face. Love that cover shot.

  • Anonymous

Wow, those pictures are fabulous.  Especially the last one…rawr!  I’ve always thought he’s an awesome actor–doesn’t get enough credit.  Between looks and talent he steals every scene.

I long ago shunned HBO, but I hope BE is available to watch elsewhere at some point.  Lots of talented folks in it, and I like the idea of it too.

    • Anonymous

Try this site for BE episodes. The links are all not created equal, so you have to *experiment*.

        Thanks, Qitkat!

Wonder what he looks like when he’s looking to his right.

Also, maybe I should know this, but he’s no relation to that Other Pitt, is he? Or?

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

No, he’s a boho from the tri-state area.

  • Anonymous

Great photos, but they’re all the same profile. I would have loved some variety in the shoot.

  • Anonymous

smoldering, yes, but he’s also got so much personality inherent in his features.  He just looks like he’s got an off-color joke to tell you, followed by a wink and a smile.

    • shorty j

exactly. If he showed up in my favorite bar, I would immediately try and get him to tell me his life story. He just looks INTERESTING, haha.

  • Anonymous

all of these pictures are of his profile.

  • Anonymous

I described Heidi as someone who is greater than the sum of her parts.. I cannot say that about this guy.

  • Sobaika Mirza

I may be showing my age here, but does anyone remember him on Dawson’s Creek? His character was a virgin and embarrassed because he was dating the local floozy, played by Michelle Williams. Who would have thought they’d end up where they did!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=615187474 Trish Barker

I always think of him as the proto-serial killer on Law & Order: SVU. Of course, there are a gazillion actors who I recall first as L&O villains — Ellen Pompeo, Cara Buono … I may watch too many Law & Order reruns.

      • Anonymous

Hayden Panatierre, Katherine Moennig… oops, that’s a victim list.

      • Sobaika Mirza

No such thing as too many L&O reruns! Especially if there’s a Meloni involved.

        • Anonymous

Chris Meloni – another actor who may not be traditionally handsome but is impossible to take your eyes off. Come to think of it, I also feel the same way about Vincent D’Onofrio.

      • Anonymous

Don’t forget Paz.  She was on there as a young’un, as was a pre-My So-Called Life Claire Danes.  Ok, I definitely watch too many L&O reruns!

      • Anonymous

Can never watch too much L&O! To add to your list: Isiah Whitlock jr., Idria Elba, Hassan Johnson, J.D. Williams, Wendell Pierce and for all you BE fans, Michael K. Williams! All who appeared on “The Wire”. Greatest show ever!

        • Anonymous

Yes! Yes!  Oh Omar, le sigh

      • Anonymous

I know him from Murder by Numbers.  With Ryan Gosling.  Mmmmm.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Z55DPUK3QAVDE33UALPQUKJL6Y K

Tommy Gnosis, Miss Hedwig’s protege. And one of the murderous idiots in Bully.

      • http://twitter.com/Deac82 Mike McCarty

I loved him as Tommy Gnosis!  Of course, that movie is one of my favorite musicals ever.  I do have the entire soundtrack on my ipod.

    • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

I do! He was so cute and puppy-like.

  • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I think he’s growing into his face nicely.  When he was younger it was all just too doll-like but now that he has a little age on him the youthful softness to his cheeks is gone and he’s just, well, damn.  I think he’s beautiful, but he’s not pretty if that makes sense. And he’s brilliant as nearly dead inside Jimmy and his occasional bouts of PTSD.

Jimmy’s not inherently bad or inherently likable and it can’t be easy to find something for the viewers to latch on to with that character, but damn if Pitt doesn’t make him compelling in all his monotonous droning.

  • Anonymous

    traditionally handsome no, mesmerizing yes.

  • Anonymous

Quite interesting, however the cigarette looks like it was added later…weird and unnecessary.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I had no idea my Tommy Gnosis was on Boardwalk Empire! Love him.

He should really quit smoking though.

  • Anonymous

wow.  the second from bottom is so Great War.  in color.

  • http://twitter.com/UnderTheDark Andrea B

Kind of the male Chloe Sevigny… weird looking, but intriguingly so.

  • Anonymous

Can he only be shot from one side?  I really do see the Cagney-ishness now that you’ve mentioned it.

  • Anonymous

Apparently he can’t look straight ahead? Nothing but profiles? How weird.

    He’s creepy.

    • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Creepy is exactly what I see, as well. Ever since Dawson’s Creek. Creepy and smug. But he does arrest the eye, in a kind of “eesh, I hope that guy doesn’t look at me” kind of way.

  • Vaniljekjeks

These profile photos accentuate the strangeness of his look.  I am not familiar with him, so I looked him up, and in some pictures he doesn’t look too odd.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

All I’ve seen him in is Boardwalk Empire, and I’m glad–he just is Jimmy to me. Which fits well with the Cagney comparison. If Jimmy had been a real person, Cagney could have played him, if you know what I mean.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Actually I just looked him up and I have seen him in a couple of films! I guess he is a good actor.

  • Beverly Nash

Interesting looking, yes. Good looking YES!

  • pdobiel

    He’s unconventionally handsome

  • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

He definitely takes a dynamic photo – and the Cagney comparisons are very apt.

  • http://profiles.google.com/embersonfire ember beasley

not attractive in the traditional sense, but so attractive to me nonetheless.

  • Laura Korth

I wonder what his best side is.

    • Rand Ortega

      I’m hoping supine.

  • Anonymous

i never found him attractive either. but i also always thought he looks a bit like leonardo dicaprio – another good actor who i dont find attractive – and since there seem to be so many people who think dicaprio is hot, i always assumed that the same is probably true for michael pitt.

that last picture is really sexy, tho.

  • Anonymous

For me this has some of what the Katy Perry spread lacks. He’s believable in every look, and something’s communicated in each picture (though a little more variety would’ve been nice).

  • Anonymous

Man. I hate his hair. I don’t understand the hair. It doesn’t seem to fit the period of Boardwalk Empire…but then, he always seems to have that hair. Always. Can’t get past it…also, I don’t find him attractive in the least, but he is a good actor and really shines in BE.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LCM5POTSHO74MUOQO6IAV4YUBE Jessica

    3/4 profile….. every time.

  • Anonymous

He’s got a good profile. And yes, exactly, he’s the guy you suddenly realize is drop dead gorgeous to you not at first sight, but only if his personality has the strength to anchor his looks. And then, you’re gone, just effing lost. (Yes, reader, I married him.)

  • http://profiles.google.com/clairehaley1 Claire Haley

He’s hot, in my book. A solid actor and a pretty good musician, too. The scene in Last Days where he sits and plays through a whole song (written by Pitt himself) gives me chills every time.

  • Anonymous

That third shot is pure old Hollywood. He also looks like he could have gone up against Elliot Ness.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

way more attractive than if he were merely another pretty one, semi-pretty one, semi-pretty if semi-geeky one, or born-too-late-to-star-in-baretta one.

there are so many men w/ so little differentiation but probably even more stereotypes but the keyboard wont let me delineate more. apologies.

  • http://www.applepublications.com/ Laura

Oh, but he is good looking and more important, sexy as hell.

  • Anonymous

While he’s not a conventionally handsome man he definitely has a certain charisma. He’s one of the more interesting characters on BE (though I’m still working through season 1) and something about him stays with you.

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

Not attractive? Uh…are we looking at the same pictures?

  • https://me.yahoo.com/a/dLUE.9h6zdoHMLprP6AQrSQpKt0CZys-#e58b4 tom

Is he just strange looking or is he wearing make up; either way he’s an asset to the Halloween season.

  • Anonymous

I personally think he used to be a beautiful man, but chose to use his beauty to creep people out instead of attract them.

  • Anonymous

You’re right, TLo.  The clothes are beside the point.  I look, and want to know what he’s going to DO.

  • Anonymous

I just had a beauty really IS in the eyes of the beholder moment reading your opening disclaimer, T Lo.  I blame The Dreamers.  I seriously would have  finished the “let’s be honest here”  with “it’s impossible to make Michael Pitt look anything but amazingly beautiful, but hell let’s critique this pictorial anyway.”    I geniunely have always found Michael Pitt to be damn purdy.  And talented.  And interesting.  And very okay with nude scenes, which is of course totalllly besides the point *cough.*  What?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1264609232 Samantha Ritchie

I agree that he has very interesting features….but I do think he is quite good-looking.

  • Samantha Hanson

I wouldn’t say he’s not particularly good looking, just that he’s not traditionally good looking. In these pictures I think he’s looking pretty fine. (Especially that 3rd one, yes please.)

  • Anonymous

yum. I love his profile. yum yum yum

  • http://twitter.com/TheRealAndra Andra

    Busted DeCaprio.

  • Macy Linton

Ooo, this! With those big, pout-y lips and that strong chin, he’s just so gorgeously androgynous. And don’t be silly, TLO. Interesting is about as attractive as it gets. I’d take this over a boring manly man any day.

  • Leslie Streeter

He makes my 40-year-old lady regions go “Hey!” And he’s a zygote.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

Why is he facing to the right in every single picture?  Makes you wonder if he isn’t all Harvey Dent on the other side…

    • Anonymous

Ha ha. Just noticed your comment : I thought almost the same thing !

  • Anonymous

Ok, don’t know the guy nor the show but… Does he ALWAYS face the camera sideway like that ? Does he EVER lokk straight at the camera ?
I have to ask, because now I wonder if he has a left profile…
