Katy Perry as the New Face of GHD

Posted on October 06, 2011

Katy done landed herself another endorsement contract. Press release fairy? Why don’t you take over for a minute.

“Today world leading professional hair styling brand ghd announces the signing of music sensation Katy Perry as the new face of the brand. Working in close collaboration with indisputably one of the most talented women in music today, the association will kick off over the next few months with an exciting new multimedia global brand campaign recently shot by world renowned photographer David LaChapelle.”

LaChapelle, Perry, and hair products all combining forces to do a shoot based around Snow White and the Evil Queen? We are SO THERE.

Except….

Katy Perry for GHD

Katy Perry for GHD

Katy Perry for GHD

Katy Perry for GHD

…well, we love both looks and yes, her hair really is styled to within an inch of its life, but if you hadn’t told us that second pic was supposed to be Snow White, we’d never have guessed it. We just would have assumed it was something about Velma Kelly getting attacked by pigeons.

The twenties are really having a(nother) moment right now, aren’t they? Love the deco style to the Evil Queen picture. We just wish the Snow White one wasn’t “generic flapper.”

I really want to like the first picture, but she just looks odd.  Maybe its a bit too dark and it just seems there is so much going on visually.

      • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

I think it’s her eye makeup. There is a metric ton of it. Her hair is also a little off to me. I love the waves and ’20s look but I don’t think it needed to be so slick.

    • Anonymous

The scene where Velma was attacked by birds was from cut from the original script.

The evil queen picture looks awesome.

    • Anonymous

I agree about the Snow White pic. I also feel like the Evil Queen is over-decorated. You’ve got a striking star, a striking dress, that iconic apple, and SO MUCH SHIT all over the room that you can’t focus.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Well it IS a David La Chapelle shoot. So Tons of props is essential.

        • Anonymous

I don’t know anything about the photographer.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

His work is usually very fantasy driven and most often has lots and lots of props.  Plus his lighting is always a trifle otherworldly.
He did some amazing stuff of Gaga a few years back. And he’s done tons of advertizing shoots and a fair bit of fashion as well.

      • http://twitter.com/pocketcarnival Penny Eager

Heh so much shit is right. For a photo about hair it’s pretty crazy.

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

Wait. the second one is of Snow White? Wouldn’t some little people dressed as newsies help this “story line” a little bit? So GHD makes hair products? I’d have thought that they designed lingerie based on the ads.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=12500056 Joseph Lamour

I may be off color about this… but… isn’t snow white supposed to be… virginal? This isnt about Katy, but… like… that dress doesn’t scream… pure… I’m uncomfortable even saying this…

        • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Don’t be. I agree. I wouldn’t say they needed to go with white to depict virginity, but a flapper draped over a fire escape isn’t doing the job.

And I wouldn’t have known she was supposed to be Snow White if TLo hadn’t said so. She looks like a hooker, or an evil queen’s idea of a virgin.

          • shorty j

exactly, since half the joy of flapper was the unabashed sexuality.

            • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Yep. Those girls were “slutty, slutty, slutty.” ;-)

          • http://twitter.com/AileenBartels Aileen Bartels

Especially not draped over a fire escape with a hotel sign in the background.  What’s with the birds?  I thought Cinderella was the one surrounded by bluebirds.  They are confusing their fairy tales, or should I say Disney movies.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EYYAY25W7VS5BYCOCTK62SSUBI tw125

The Disney version of Snow White is definitely virginal but there are many versions of the story and she’s not always portrayed that way. I think the key words here are “inspired by”.

    • Anonymous

The second pic is supposed to be Snow White?!? Huh?

      • Anonymous

The only thing I can come up with is “Whistle While You Work” with the little bluebirds flying around, but that was Cinderella.
Wait, didn’t birds drop leaves around Snow White after she died? No, the Dwarves buried her. I guess I got nuttin.

And in some stories, the Evil Queen takes a bite of the unpoisoned side of the apple to prove that it is safe and delicious.

        • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

“Whistle While You Work” is Snow White. “I’m Wishing” is Cinderella. “It’s a Small World” is earworm hell.

          • Anonymous

“I’m Wishing” is from Snow White too. That high-pitched, eardrum-piercing voice….

            • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

Oh yeah! Then what the crap is Cindy C singing about in the woods? I just remember “Cinderelly! Cinderelly! Night and day, it’s Cinderelly!”

            • Anonymous

Like Terence says above, “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” is a song Cinderella sings, and the helpful mice sing about Cinderella’s wenchbag sisters nagging her all the time.  They also sing about making her dress to the same tune, I believe.

I know way too much about Disney princess movies, I think.

            • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

Phew! I feel better. Stuff like this keeps me up at night. My sleep got so much better back in the day when I discovered iMDB.

            • Terence Ng

              You’re all wrong! Just kidding.

“I’m Wishing” and “Whistle While You Work” are from Snow White. “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” is the song from Cinderella with all the domesticated avians and rodents.

    • Sobaika Mirza

The pictures are so odd, her face is so vacant. I get Photoshop but this just looks unappealing.

    • Anonymous

Is it just me, or does it seem like these shots are more about selling that red clutch than selling hair products?  Unless maybe the hair products are IN the red clutch?  Or maybe it’s just some nefarious satin construction that lurks around Perry’s trailer, waiting for its chance to strike!

      • Anonymous

ghd always markets their expensive flatirons and curling irons with some ridiculous clutch or limited edition bag thingy. no doubt this is the “snow white” edition or something

    • Anonymous

The Evil Queen is always so much more interesting.

    • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

I really don’t see Snow White in the second shot… but the Evil Queen photograph is FABULOUS.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Taken as two separate images, they are both impressive and wonderful.  Katy looks yowza hot in both of them, and the styling of the shots is great.  Just too bad the follow through isn’t there.

    • Anonymous

I’m confused.  If she’s the evil queen, why is she holding an apple with a bite taken out of it?  And why are they both hookers?  I’m not saying they aren’t striking pictures, but why bother giving the concept of Snow White and then the only reference is an apple?  And some birds.

      • Terence Ng

Maybe she’s picked it up off of the floor of the penthouse suite where Snow White is laying comatose and blocked by a chez lounge.

But as someone else mentioned, in some versions of the story, she bites a piece of the apple not filled with poison to prove that it’s safe for Snow White to eat.

        • Anonymous

Hmm…I never heard that.  I know that she bites an apple and hands SW a different one.  Oh, well.  Artistic license.  I mean, that flapper is supposed to be SW.

    • http://twitter.com/turtleemily Turtle Emily

I’m not getting why the apple has a bite taken out of it.

      And she always looks vacant.

      • Anonymous

Just what I said.  If she’s the Queen, the apple should be whole.

    • Anonymous

      Digging the Evil Queen.

    • Anonymous

      FABULOUS

I really want a boa and a flapper dress, but I can’t think of one place outside of the bedroom where they would be appropriate.

    • Anonymous

So… she is supposed to be Snow White?

Because she kind of looks like a hooker. Just sayin’.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And BTW.  I’m not a girl, and I WANT those Evil Queen SHOOOOOZ!

    • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

Well it IS supposed to be about the hair and I think they got that right.  Katy is gorgeous in both…

    • MilaXX

Yeah that second picture was a really bad idea. It’s Katy Perry they could have had much more fun than this.

    • Anonymous

These are so air-brushed that they don’t even look like real  humans – especially those first shots of her face as the evil Queen.

      • Anonymous

Yes!  Her neck looks impossibly long.

    • Anonymous

I like the idea of these pics, but not the reality so much. First of all, I often think “wig” when I think of Katy Perry. So when I see these shots, I automatically think she’s wearing a wig as part of yet another new dress-up persona. Not so great when promoting hair products. Secondly, she doesn’t really look like herself here.

Is ghd an American line or sold here? I’m not sure I’ve heard of it.

    • Anonymous

I have a story in my head about the first picture. She has the apple because this picture was taken AFTER Snow White took that bite. The hunter gave her the apple back as proof (I know that’s not how it happened in the movie, but work with me here).
As for the second picture, Snow White? My thoughts immediately went to Cher, honestly. Um, maybe the Evil Queen wanted to make a dashing escape via pigeon carrier.
KP does 20’s very well, as I’d expect.

    • Anonymous

She looks like Kat von D in the Snow White picture. I don’t think I’d wish that on anyone.

    • Anonymous

      Wigs.  Just sayin’.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I thought the first one was Snow White. Just before she falls into her swoon….

    • Anonymous

I simply have little of no opinion concerning Katy Perry and/or her hair products… I’m focusing on your comments about the 1920’s…
Did any of you have a chance to see Ken Burns’ film,  Prohibition?  I drink up that kind of documentary (no pun intended), but was pleasantly surprised at how  much my husband enjoyed it as well.  The film clips of the 20’s were fabulous…. And despite the ridiculous idea of Prohibition,  we have Prohibition to thank for the modern cocktail, night clubs and liberated ladies bellying up to the bar!!  Who knew??

      • Anonymous

Prohibition was an excellent film.  The fantastic early film and news clips played a huge part in telling this incredibly complex and compelling era of our history. I’m always stunned by the research that goes into his documentaries. I learned more about the 20’s than I ever possibly could have learned anywhere else.

    • Anonymous

Would not make me stop and would not make me interested in the product

    • Anonymous

I think these photos are over-styled–the hair is definitely not what stands out–and there’s too much Photoshopping too.

That said, Katy looks fabulous, as she almost always does.

      “Velma Kelly attacked by pigeons”–brilliant!

What is with the red clutch?

    • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

They did some weird stuff to her face in the evil queen one, didn’t they?  the makeup looks strange, almost like she’s been bruised?  Am I crazy?

    • Anonymous

Oh, I love. Though the sets are kind of overwrought.(as is, to be blunt, the wardrobe) I like the period, I like the concept, I think she & her hair work, but there’s just a tad bit too much going on.  The creative types just didn’t know when to stop.

      Still love, though.

      • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.eric.hill Shawn Hill

Restraint isn’t a word LaChapelle uses that much.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          or at all, ever.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

The second one is incredibly overdone.

    • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

Her face in these is SO YAWN!! Where’s the fierce?

      • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

Also, is that a red satin clutch hovering in the background of the second pic?

        • Anonymous

All I can figure is that the products are available in packaging that looks just exactly like an over-sized red satin clutch. If not, can’t quite figure that one out.

    • Anonymous

I’m letting my hair grow out so it’s as bushy and wide as the second shoot. Who knew that was a “look.”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

How confusing.  I couldn’t tell if she was supposed to be Snow White or the Evil Queen in the first picture, because I didn’t think the Evil Queen ever bit the apple.  I thought the second picture was about something else entirely.  What’s up with the red purse if this is for hair products?

      • Anonymous

In some of the versions of the story, the evil queen (disguised as the beggar woman) does bite one (unpoisoned) side of the apple to tempt Snow White with its juicy goodness.

    • Anonymous

Her hair is pink now, so either these pics are months old or she is, like others have said, wearing wigs. Love Katy, but she is the wrong choice for this product. Like when loreal chose beyonce as spokesperson for hair color and everybody knows beyonce almost always wears wigs – she’s even wearing one in the commercial.

    • Anonymous

What does the red clutch hold?  Hair products? Her flat iron?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BEV2WB3MZRJHA4KD5DK4QY6FQQ Dinah

Huh.  I like the shots but I don’t get a snow white vibe from either.  And I barely recognized KP as herself.  The first photo is my fave but I agree I wanted to think that was Snow White because of the apple and because of the coloring and hairstyle being more evocative of Snow White.

I’d like it if they took the Snow White theme and now reworked it into another decade or styling for the whole series.

    • Now I am The Bee

Well–that’s fine.  She has to do something to promote herself, since she can’t sing.

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

I think the second photo isn’t reading “Snow White” because the dress is peach. When I think “Snow White” colors, I think gold, blue, red, and, um, white.

      • Anonymous

And also whorelike, perhaps. Not the typical association with Snow White.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZMU2QQUTAUEPU23MUTZBQ5W2PI Peter

You don’t necessarily have to go the Disney root in making an allusion to a fairy tale. And really, it’s not just the color here (although peach wasn’t the best choice — we already have an apple — too many fruits in one room); it’s the feathers, it’s the fringe, it’s the necklaces. I’m sure there’s a way to reimagine Snow White through a quirky retro lens, but she was never a party girl. (Or a nightclub singer. Or a prostitute.)

        • Anonymous

Exactly.  You don’t have to put her in the Disney costume, and I could even see them making her a little sexy.  But they did nothing to make you think she was SW.

    • Anonymous

      Echoing the wig note.
Also the queen photo just seems so entirely un Katy Perry in attitude and concept.

It’s not like they couldn’t have found some one else to pitch their shit for them, that they chose Perry and chose these ideas is mark against their ad department.

    • Anonymous

I also thought “Chicago” in the flapper shots. But, more important, her hair looks like wigs. Why would this inspire me to buy hair products?

    • Anonymous

What a strange campaign. The tagline is: “You can do anything with your hair.” If you’re going the fairy tale route, wouldn’t just about any princess other than Snow White be your go-to gal for starters?

    • Anonymous

I love the first look, but the second is atrocious, and yes, wiglike. It’s also been so retouched it may as well have been drawn on. That does not inspire confidence in hair products.

    • Terence Ng

Or Velma Kelly unleashing her pigeon army upon her husband Charlie and her sister Veronica because…they had it comin’. The perfect crime.

    • Anonymous

Beautiful photos (and I want the wallpaper in the first), but it looks a little like the Evil Queen is a madame and Snow White is one of her Hookers With a Heart of Gold. The Littlest Whorehouse in Fairyland.

    • Anonymous

WTF? Her face looks totally dead in both shots. Get yourself an audience with Tyra pronto, missy. You need some lessons in smizing.

    • Anonymous

They just look so fake/touched up … too much!

    • Alyssa Stanfield

The thing I love about Katy Perry is how she has one of those faces that transforms…she can rock any color hair (yes, I even think she rocked the pink), she rocks all different styles of make-up, she pretty much pull off almost any look.

    • Judy_J

She looks like a wax dummy in both photos.  That hair doesn’t look remotely like real hair, either.  Looks like she’s got her hand up that bird’s ass in the “Snow White” photo.  I’m not buying it.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I don’t mind the wig. I mean, I know damn well that the women in mascara commercials are usually wearing false eyelashes. And I was so busy looking at the shoes the Evil Queen is wearing I didn’t even notice the red clutch.

I’ve never been a fan of the “guess what we’re selling” method of advertising, and the Evil Queen photos are especially serious offenders. But these are some pretty amazing photos.

Of course they hired Katy Perry. At least the PR flacks called her a “sensation” instead of an “icon”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bonnie-Parent/771908636 Bonnie Parent

In the first photo, the red clutch is the closest thing to a focal point, which I don’t understand at all.  In the second, is her right hand supposed to be holding the Hotel sign?  Look where that sign is.  A bit of an M.C. Escher thing, going on.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=19801927 Dennis Coyle

yeah, it takes a little too much thinking to get to Snow White in the second pic.  the markers are there, but none is as compositionally important or so readily identified as the character.

    • Anonymous

I dunno why, I just find Katy Perry infinitely uninteresting.

    • Anonymous

      yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.

    • Anonymous

I’m getting a Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow vibe here.

Also, *Velma Kelly getting attacked by pigeons.*
Nearly spit my hot tea on the keyboard!

    • Anonymous

She has absolutely zero personality here. Is that usually the case?

    • Anonymous

Not feeling these at all; that is, not feeling her inhabiting these looks.

    • Anonymous

I seriously thought both sets of pictures were of a Real Doll, or maybe a CG person. None of this looks real, or even human.

    • Anonymous

The Evil Queen shot is FABULOUS, the Snow White one is cute and really features the hair. Incongruous or not, I love this.

    • Anonymous

Is it too soon to do another version of Chicago?

    • Anonymous

The evil queen photo is beautiful.  I just wish she’d given a liiiiiiittle more face in both of them.  Her eyes seem a little vacant.

    • Anonymous

LOVE the Evil Queen picture.  You know it’s a great background when you can take the person out and it would still be an awesome photograph!

I don’t get the second one.  She looks like a floozy in a movie on MST3K.

    • Mariah J

“indisputably one of the most talented women in music today”I’m pretty sure I could dispute that one…I like the style of the pictures but they look too posed and fake.

    • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

Both pics seem overly busy. Of course it’s easy to pull off the Wicked Queen, what with the goth makeup and bitten apple in her hand. As for Snow White, maybe sexy lederhosen and a dinrdl miniskirt? Dopey and Sleepy peeking in through the window? Yeah, I got nothin’.

    • Anonymous

I thought maybe she was starring in the sequel to “Burlesque”……  If there can be a “Footloose” remake, “Burlesque 2: The show ain’t over” can’t be far behind.

Velma Kelly being attacked by pigeons… classic. Your one liners like that are like poetry T Lo. :-D

I have two questions: 1 – what is GHD? I’ve not heard of them before.
2 – The setting for the “Snow White” picture – is that the same set they used for Lady Gaga’s video for Edge of Glory? It looks like it to me.

Hair straighteners are their main thing, they’re huge in the UK but I don’t know about anywhere else. Good quality and quite expensive. They’ve become one of those brands where owners refer to the item by the brand name rather than by the generic description.

nope. This may be my least fave LaChappelle spread ever. SO glad they called her a SENSATION and not a diva or icon which they throw around so much they have lost all meaning.  That is what she and SO Many are – sensations…not legends…not great vocalists…just fun or entertaining. I love this appropriate wording. Hate the pics. Shocked that this meeting of the minds would be so damn dull!

PS I thought for a moment she ha red hightops on in the wicked queen shot

    • Anonymous

I love the looks here, but there’s something missing in her face.  Her eyes are dead; there’s no connection.  Both shots look very static, almost as if they were photos of a wax Katy Perry in different costumes.  It’s strange because she’s normally so dynamic.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B53PQYXSJR4YJBV3J6BWYSICRQ Jamie

      Snow White? Really? No.
