Kate Winslet for UK Harper’s Bazaar

Posted on October 06, 2011

Damn, suddenly everyone wants to put Kate in heavy eye makeup.

UK Harper’s Bazaar November 2011 Issue
Editorial: “Kate”
Photographer: Tom Munro
Stylist: Cathy Kasterine
Hair: Nicola Clark
Makeup: Miranda Joyce

On her breakup with director Sam Mendes: “One thing I will say about me and Sam is that it’s fine, it’s really fine. I’m not going to s—fling, there’s no point in even going there. It is what it is… We’re grown-ups at the end of the day, and however hard it’s been for me, it’s been equally hard for him. And we have a child together who we both love – and raising him together, jointly and without any conflict, is absolutely key. It’s the only way to do it, and I’ve really learnt that with Mia.”

On modern families: “Those days of every child having a mummy and daddy who lived at home – Daddy went to work, and Mummy stayed at home and took care of everyone – those days have almost gone, and it’s so much more unconventional now”

On her future: “I feel that I’m just at the beginning of a new narrative, and it’s incredibly exciting. It’s complicated, I know, and uncertain – but it’s where life happens, between the cracks. It can be a painful process, but I truly hope that never stops for me.”

It’s in many ways the boilerplate divorced actress interview. We’re just glad that she didn’t break out the “As a mother, entertainer, and person” line.

Is it us, or are these some mighty unflattering pictures of her? She looks pretty good on the cover, but the inside shots are kind of awkward, no?

I’m so tired of Kate Winslet being made out to be some sort of glamor queen.   To me, she’s just not that kind of actress.

    • http://twitter.com/obscureobjects David Calder

Amen. This shoot makes me want to re-watch Little Children.

  • Anonymous

If you hadn’t told me it was Kate, I wouldn’t have recognized her.  Love the cover shot…the rest just seems so over done to me…seen it many times before.

  • http://twitter.com/Shopgrrl81 Shopgrrl81

I feel like the last 2 Kate Winslet shoots have been about pitching her for the Liz Taylor bio pic.

  • nicewilliams

For someone who takes stands against body photoshopping, these shots are, um, pretty ‘shopped.  And, no-go on the heavy eye makeup.

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Agreed.  Extreme photoshopping on the third photo; who is she, Scarlett O’Hara with that seventeen inch waist?  Please.

      • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

I had exactly the same thought.  Her body is already fab, why on earth do they do that?  Totally preposterous.

      • Anonymous

Her bottom half is so much smaller than her top half it looks like she’s about to snap in the middle.

  • Anonymous

I know they Photoshop. I know it’s a given. But if you hadn’t told me it was Kate Winslet, I’m not sure I could have guessed.

    • Carey Cauthen

Agreed. I had no idea who it was and went to re-read the title of the post to be sure. She’s a very pretty photoshopped creation here, but one with only a bare resemblance to the actual woman.

      • http://summerborn.livejournal.com/ Summer Born

I also had to do a double- (and triple-) take to see if I had read the name correctly.

  • Emily Johnson

Everything I loved about Kate Winslet has been stripped away, no longer is she the buxom and bosomy beauty, she’s a bleach-blonde bimbo in black lace.

    Disappointing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jessica.leis1 Jessica Leis

That’s some ridiculous photoshop. Just wait until Jezebel sees.

  • Anonymous

The cover is stunning! The other pictures are a little off, but she still looks beautiful.

  • Anonymous

I really wish she’d stop with the blonde hair. She looks so much better as a brunette or a redhead.

    • Anonymous

I think she’s okay as a blonde, but a dark blonde, closer to her natural light brown.  This platinum thing just gets harsh.

  • Anonymous

You guys are right. Not greatly flattering and she’s almost unrecognizable in most of them. She don’t need to be doing this

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Gorgeous as she is, she is not a model.  Her real beauty only comes out in the motion of her face and form through space.  This is yet another attempt to make her into some sort of iconic Monroesque beauty.

    • Anonymous

So right Mr. Kilted and Tilted – Kate Winslet is all about the voice, the movement of her face, that sassy vibe and twinkle that you get when you see her acting or being interviewed.  I would not have recognized ONE of these photos if her name hadn’t been attached.  I’d have thought I was looking at another generic, photoshopped, peroxided, mannequin-like carbon-based creature.

  • Anonymous

The cover shot is gorgeous. Love it. The rest fall flat.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

It’s you. I think she looks awesome!

  • Anonymous

what kind of role is she actually auditioning for??? it has to be the Liz Taylor biopic….

  • Joanna Schuth

These shots kind of make her look like Dooce.

  • Anonymous

Her personality is missing from all of these photographs.

  • Anonymous

Not crazy about these, I liked the spread in V more

  • Anonymous

It’s not just you, these are some unfortunate pictures. I don’t think the heavy eyeliner is Kate’s look. The cover isn’t bad – love the dress, but inside pics are just harsh…or something.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I think they are all awkward.  The cover doesn’t even look like her.

  • Sara__B

An ode to photoshop. Kate Winslet has been lost in the process.

  • Anonymous

I disagree; I think she looks gorgeous. The eye makeup is definitely too heavy, but it’s not bothering me as much as it should.

  • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

the third picture in the inside set doesn’t even look like her.  Bizarre.

  • Anonymous

I’m not digging the eye make up. It doesn’t fit her face at all, and is probably one of the reasons these shots are unflattering.

  • Anonymous

I never would’ve thought it with Winslet, but a couple of those inside shots look far more like Marilyn than the Michelle Williams shoot did!

    • Anonymous

I had the same thought. She makes a fantastic Marilyn (better than Williams imo).

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Yes!  My thoughts exactly!  She’s got the same expression in the eyes as MM.  MW just doesn’t have it.

  • Anonymous

I know the exaggerated Cleopatra type eye is very en vogue at the moment, but it doesn’t suit everyone…prime example here….

  • Anonymous

She is so skinny.  When did that happen?  Is it the Divorce Diet?

    • http://twitter.com/vane_livestrong Vanessa

      Try the Airbrushed Diet.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks gorgeous, but not much like herself at all. Don’t like the under-eye heavy liner, but upper lid is fine. It’s a different look for her, and fine as a one-off.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1214755227 Meira Niibori

I was thinking the same thing about the top vs. bottom lid liner.  Probably doesn’t help that the bottom liner is a bit messed up in a couple of the photos, and the concealer is visible in the b&w ones, making her look even more raccoonish.

  • Anonymous

Wow, I did not recognize her on the cover. I still have problems seeing it’s her. I did like the other shots, especially in profile.

  • MilaXX

I don’t like any of these looks. The hair is too blonde and the heavy liner looks like it was applied with a sharpie. She just seems so fake these days. Trying to hard with the too tight dresses and photo shoots like this just aren’t endearing.

  • Anonymous

Interesting to read Kate Winslet’s comments, but who’s that in the pictures?

  • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

    1) Definitely not awkward
    2) Yes, a little different than her usual
    3) Serious Madonna lookalike here (and that’s not a dig)
    4) Her body is slammin’

    That’s all!

  • Anonymous

And I thought I wore a lot of eye makeup in the sixties.

Sorry, beautiful woman has evolved into generic beautiful blonde.

  • http://twitter.com/frozenovaries Bellybama

Adele is British… As is Kate Winslet! Lets make them the same person! Is this not the shoot that Vogue would have done with Adele if she were slightly less “Fuller bodied”?

Ugh. Fail. I miss red head Kate. The one that you wouldn’t presume to blow smoke up every-person-ever’s arse to get more attention/clothing/thinness/blondeness/Oscar.

But I will say… I actually preffer the last 3 (Ignoring the titty shot) shots. They look a bit more ‘in the moment’ and a little less “Mutton as lamb.”

  • Anonymous

The cover looks like Carrie Underwood to me.

  • Anonymous

PICS – nope, not awkward.  (ummm, it IS you…)
TEXT – as a mother, entertainer and person, I find it refreshing that she cusses.

  • Anonymous

Thought the first two inside ones were the worst. the third is pretty although looks very fake.  Last one not bad.

I know it is considered “old-fashioned” but her interview makes me sad to think about how few children now get to grow up in the type of family (non-modern?) that she described.  (that I and most of friends had;  my brothers kids are the only ones in my circle who had that experience (consistently) in this generation)

  • Anonymous

Unflattering, and not like her at all.

  • Anonymous

Weird.  In some pictures I’m getting nuances of Elizabeth Hurley, in others Marilyn Monroe.  Either way, the liner is too heavy, especially on the upper lid.  :/  Too bad.  She has a killer bod now.

  • Anonymous

i did not recognize her. to me its so not her?.  i have a thing for eye-makeup & i wish i could get away with the look.

  • http://aintbaroque.wordpress.com/ Ain’t Baroque

I wish she HAD broken out that “mother, entertainer, and person” line. And I could laugh anew! Possibly with her, even, assuming she was quoting ironically and not picking something out of the collective consciousness of divorced actresses.

  • Anne Slovin

The problem with this is that what makes Kate Winslet special as an actress is that she always seems so relatable and approachable.  She makes you want to have a conversation with her, just kind of hang out, you don’t get the feeling that she’s some kind of alien celebrity creature.  But this kind of ruins that for me.

    • Anonymous

Agreed!  LAtely, she seems to be jooining inthe “Glamazon Movie Star” league of indistinguishable leading ladies.

      • http://twitter.com/vane_livestrong Vanessa

There’s no way she’s indistinguishable. She’s such an accomplished actress, she can’t be lumped together with the rest of them. It’s just a heavily stylized photo shoot and quite frankly she’s done them for years now! Why are people acting like she had just joined a new league or something?

        • Anonymous

Let me clarify, i would never, ever intend to diminish her incredible acting abilities, they are certainly head and shoulders above many of her fellow actresses.  my comment was solely intended to call in question her styling choices of late, not just here but elsewhere.  To my eye, she has moved away form her original and unique sense of individuality that always drew me to her as a person.  I could always pick her out of a crowd immedietaly and now I feel she has adopted a more standard “glam” look that is less original to my eyes.

  • Anonymous

The soft focus and the over-exaggerated eye makeup make her kind of vague looking, as if we’re staring of a copy of a copy of Kate W.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tatiana.lensky Veronika Kaufmann

whatever happened to the Garbo-esque mystique? Overexposure is so dull.

  • Anonymous

My God!  The Momsen eye, it burns!

  • oohsparkley!

I love the cover and the first inside picture.  So beautiful but unrecognizable as Kate Winslet.  I hate photoshopping – it’s ok  to remove a zit, but why change the shape of someone’s face and everything else?

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Wasn’t she pretending to be Liz last week? and now it’s Marilyn. I want Kate back.

  • Anonymous

I’m beginning to wonder if the last few months have been one big stealth marketing campaign for her next big film.  Which will be titled “Unrecognizable”.

  • Anonymous

The eye makeup is terribly distracting and actually takes away from her eyes which are her best feature. And you’re right about the inside shots, T Lo.  Not flattering, not glamorous, not eye-catching. In fact, they make Kate look kind of model generic and boring.  That should be a punishable offense.

  • Anonymous

Sooooo sick of the Monroe-esque look and styling. And that platinum shade does her no favors. Too harsh and ashy. She needs a warm, golden blonde.

  • Anonymous

Kate may embrace her curves, but apparently the boys in the photo-shop room do not….specifically photo 3, no hips allowed.

    • Anonymous

Thank you!  I looked at these photos and wondered for a minute whether I’d misread and was looking at Cate Blanchett. She’s been busting out of every red carpet look for the past few months, and suddenly she’s a sylph?….

  • Anonymous

I think these are pictures of a very attractive woman who looks nothing like Kate Winslet making uncomfortable poses in a bad wig.

  • http://twitter.com/1carmelita 1carmelita

Did she actually say “it is what it is…” and “at the end of the day…” in the same sentence?  My 2 most hated cliché phrases.

    • Anonymous

Don’t worry that was written by her publicist, not her.

  • sweetlilvoice

Sorry, I think she looks great!

  • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

I think she looks gorgeous in every picture!  sigh

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_C65IT4K6RYN4TWRMFJOI3VUDAI Olechka Milashka

I think it’s you.  She’s as gorgeous as ever

  • Addicted2Glamour

A pity, really. Unflattering styling, lighting and posing render this beautiful woman almost unrecognizable.

  • Anonymous

Is it the return of the 1960s eye?  I have to say, I think it looks good on her. The third photo is the one I like, although I too am wearying of Monroe Redux.

I was stopped in my tracks by this statement in her “interview” (assuming questions were submitted on paper and someone filled in the answers): “Those days of every child having a mummy and daddy who lived at home – Daddy went to work, and Mummy stayed at home and took care of everyone – those days have almost gone.”

ALMOST gone?  Those days have been gone for decades, sweetie.  Where’ve you been?

    • http://twitter.com/vane_livestrong Vanessa

Well she’s right though. There are still loads of traditional families where the father goes to work and the mother either works from home or is simply a stay at home mother.

      • Alloy Jane

Exactly. I can’t name a single first world country where the traditional, single-income family does not still exist.

Anyways, Kate looks hot.  The one where she’s lying down IS a bit awkward.  And her missing arm in the third is a bit bizarre.  But that cover makes up for those two.

  • http://twitter.com/vane_livestrong Vanessa

She’s an actress. Doing a photo shoot. With a stylized concept. And airbrushing. Of course she’s not going to look exactly like herself. It’s funny that people are expecting ‘normal Kate’ when it’s a photo shoot. It’s not like this is her regular style in real life. Stylists will experiment with makeup, designs, clothing, camera tricks, etc. It was a very concept-driven, 60s mod-inspired shoot, much like how V magazine was a Taylor-inspired shoot. Oh and doesn’t the second-to-last picture looks like a camera trick put to use? If she were facing the camera directly we’d probably see her curvy silhouette.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

kind of odd. very marilyn in decline. & photoshopped. weirdly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf UltimaEsperenza

Please explain how any of these photos are unflattering.

  • Anonymous

Kate Winslet:  Yuck, inside and out.

  • Anonymous

This looks more Lindsay Lohan than Kate. Disappointing for sure.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

Disagree this time. I think she looks amazing in every shot. Love the sultry make-up.

  • Anonymous

Just you.  I think she’s such an uncommonly beautiful woman.

  • Anonymous

She looks FANTASTIC!!! I love all the pics…..

  • http://fafafab.tumblr.com/ fafafab

you said Kristen Stewart doesn’t look like herself, but I think Kate hasn’t been looking like herself since she lost weight

  • Judy Raddue

Has the open shirt photo been photoshopped or has she really become that thin?

As for the eye makeup, I think they’re trying to make her look like Adele’s older sister, if not mother.

    • Anonymous

exactly what i was thinking.  wasn’t she the actress who looked like a real woman with real curves?  it looks like her waist is disappearing in the picture.

    • Anonymous

Major photoshop. Look at the pic in the lace top and compare it. They’ve gone a bit overboard, she looks like she could get her hand round her own waist.

  • http://twitter.com/A_SmallFry AC

I’m not loving this look on her. Also, in that first picture she kind of gave me a meryl streep vibe. Thats all.

  • Anonymous

Sharon Sto…err…Kate Winslet, leave glamor like this to Adelle m’kay?
“At the end of the day” “It is what it is” Who the F talks like that?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1214755227 Meira Niibori

Why are half the photos mirrored?  That’s just making her even more unrecognizable, because it just feels like something’s “off”.

  • Anonymous

I wouldn’t have recognized her without her name being mentioned. And there’s no cool or dramatic transformation to really warrant that. Just seems like some generic photos. The cover shot isn’t bad though.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AYQCICXEN2CCDBFV5HED4Z2RUA Dee B

Huh.  I loved it.  For the very reason that people see her as “not that girl”, it’s good for her to have these times, when indeed, she can be just that.

  • Anonymous

She is such a beautiful woman…so unnecessary to make her up to look like Madonna doing Marilyn.  Ugh. I had to re-read the title to make sure too.  Would not have guessed it.

  • Wrenaria

I think she looks gorgeous. I might not have recognized who she was without help though. Still. Goorrrrgeooouuss.

  • Anonymous

I don’t even recognize her … wasn’t she the one who got angry when her photos were retouched?

  • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

what’s up with this constant sexed up vampy version of kate?  is it her or someone else pushing it on us?  i much prefer my kate real with side of real and a dash of quirk.  this is boring.  she looks like sharon stone.

  • http://twitter.com/TerraIncognita Terra

I keep seeing Christina Applegate in these photos, especially the cover shot.

  • Angie Keith

I think she looks amazing, photoshop or not.  Good for her trying something new.
