Jaime King in Jason Wu

Posted on October 11, 2011

We once asked a fashion insider what they thought of Jason Wu’s aesthetic. They responded with the kind of sound bite we wished we’d thought up ourselves: “It’s very ‘lady,'” meaning, it has an old school, ladylike quality to it. Thing is, that’s not always something the average modern gal can pull off effectively. We rag on a lot of gals for poor accessorizing, but we think Jaime King hit exactly the right note here.

And that’s kind of ironic, since she accessorized with another Jason Wu piece. The dress? Totally lady. It’s crisp and feminine and very pretty. Loyal minions know that we have a thing about grown women wearing bows as well as the over-reliance on neutral shades for the red carpet, but this dress hits all the right notes, just so. But if she’d worn, say, a traditional pair of pumps, this could have gone Betty Draper very quickly. These slightly edgier shoes really help to make the look. Minions also know that we tend to sniff when people wear the runway look head to toe, but she looks so good here we can’t work up the disapproval. Just an all-around super-pretty look.

My OCD does not allow me to fully embrace such high-ankled shoes with that length of skirt.
Otherwise, in. Love the construction of the skirt.

I love the look, except for the shoes. I totally agree it needs an edgy shoe, but I just hate that silver strap. Makes it all unbalanced looking.

    • Anonymous

I don’t love the shoes with that dress.  Or at all.  But the dress is adorable.

      • Anonymous

Those shoes are like an ankle strap on crack.  Way to chop up a lovely leg line, blech.  Everything else is great though.

        • Anonymous

Also, now that I look more closely, I think her makeup is a little harsh for that dress.  The eyes are too heavy and dark.

      • Anonymous

Those shoes are awful. They absolutely kill the whole look.

    • Kyle Crawford

triple love… only maybe would be a POP of color with the bag.. otherwise best I have seen in a while!

    • Anonymous

Love the dress; hate the shoes. They may be edgy, but they are also ugly.

    • Anonymous

She does look really pretty. I see what you’re saying about the edgier shoes, but I still think those particular ones are kind of ugly.

It’s cheating a little, I guess to wear the whole look put together just so – but she looks amazing.  I love the dress and the shoes… I love her hair and her make up.  Ahhhh… pretty!

    • Anonymous

As much as I hate those shoes I agree with your assessment.

    • Anonymous

      Very pretty.

I don’t like the shoes, but they work here.

I don’t care for the shoes, but she looks lovely.  I will gladly take “lady” over “lady gaga” anyday.

      Who is this person?

      • Sobaika Mirza

Model/Actress. She’s been in quite a few things at this point. Google is your friend.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Stephens-Bassett/1503492602 Karen Stephens Bassett

Thanks, Sobaika (beautiful name).  I think it comes down to me just being too lazy to Google her, and to honest, I really can’t get all excited who she is.

          • Sobaika Mirza

Thanks! I hated it growing up, too different. I’ve learned to embrace it.

WERQ. i love every bit of this outfit, including the hair/makeup.

    • MilaXX

I was going to credit her with making the look modern with the choice of shoe but then I saw that she copied the runway look. Still she looks really good and sometimes stealing the runway look doesn’t work in real life so kudos to her.

    • Terence Ng

Those shoes look way too tight on the model. Jaime looks great!

    • Anonymous

The shoes are ridiculous.  The rest is great.

    • Anonymous

Start out by saying – she looks great.    Those shoes are awfully narrow and there is weird seaming on that skirt but over all the look is very cute

    • http://twitter.com/A_SmallFry AC

Wowza! That model looks like she’s about to lose a toe in that photo!

On another note, I think Ms. King looks very nice, not loving that hair on her though.

    • Judy_J

      I love that dress!

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

I can easily see Kate Bosworth or Keira Knightly in this.

I wonder whether anyone had the same thought looking at the thumbnail – WTH did someone suddenly do an intervention on Linsay Lohan?

    • Anonymous

Love the dress. Love the shoes. Love the dress with the shoes. Don’t love the hair…actually, hate the hair and it almost ruined the look for me, so I just put my thumb over her head and that did the trick.

    • http://jessieliz.wordpress.com/ Super Red

I don’t mind the dress, and I agree with the idea that it’s difficult to pull off Jason Wu effectively. That said, those are just about the ugliest shoes I’ve ever seen in my life. Like, need an intervention ugly. They pull the eye from the dress straight down to the ankles, and not in a good way. I don’t think, “ooh! cute shoes!” I think, “AAAH!!! Mad stylist on the loose! Celebrities run for your lives!”

      • Anonymous

I like the dress.  Agree with you totally on the shoes.  Look how tortured the toes look in the close-up.  If men were forced to wear shoes like this, no male designer would ever design anything like these again.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I don’t really like this dress. I like the shoes though.

    • Carey Cauthen

I like it too, but is that just a zig-zag stitch on the skirt edge instead of an actual hem? All I can think is — lazy.

    • Anonymous

Wow–we really dress up for polo!

      Love this dress.

    • Anonymous

ennnhhhhh, the skirt is really stiff

    • Anonymous

I’ve always thought she was so pretty–hadn’t seen her with this hairstyle, and it looks great on her.

I love the dress…and while I agree with the edgy shoe, I’m not wild about THIS edgy shoe.  Otherwise she looks beautiful, and looks like she FEELS beautiful, too.

    • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

Since when does edgy = fugly?  Those shoes are on a level of ugly with the ones Uma Thurman wore in a previous post.

    • Anonymous

I think the shoes work better on the model because it seems that the dress is shorter on the model.  The combination of a below-the-knee skirt with below-the-calf strappage makes her legs look way short.

The dress is fab, very pretty, and she carries it off well.  Extra points if, as it seems from the model’s photo, there are pockets.  I live for skirts & dresses with pockets!

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

The construction on that skirt is really interesting. I agree about needing edgy shoes – but those particular shoes look uncomfortable on her.

      • Anonymous

My eyes were also drawn to the construction. It’s quite beautiful and is flattering without being too full.

    • http://twitter.com/onetimeko maybe more

I really dislike those shoes. An edgy shoe, yes. Those shoes? No. Do love the rest of the look though, she looks very pretty.

      • http://aintbaroque.wordpress.com/ Ain’t Baroque

        I second precisely this sentiment.

        • Alyson Lamble

I third it.  She had me until the shoes.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LDLNDAFFRCIWNXZFYTIE46OJWI Linda

I think lady is perfect for polo and I agree about needing edgy shoes, but you should be able to walk on grass when you’re watching polo.

    • Anonymous

She is rocking an awful lot of Botox these days.

    • Anonymous

Well not exactly the runway head-to-toe~~no thorns or twigs sticking out the back of her head. (And why are the model’s knees so pink?) Cute look and the color’s so right for the sponsor

    • Anonymous

Love the ensemble but the shoes could go.

    • Anonymous

Love the ensemble but the shoes could go.

    • Lisa

Yeah, I like the edgy shoes – normally, I wouldn’t care for them with a “lady” dress, but they do work in this case.

    • Anonymous

I like the dress and I like her but I hate the makeup and hair – makes her look hard and old.

    • Anonymous

HATE the shoes..otherwise she looks FAB.

    • Anonymous

Not completely sold on the shoes, but overall she looks lovely. That dress is divine.

    • Anonymous

      I love the whole look.

    • Anonymous

      Woo hoo Jason Wu!

    • Anonymous

WANT the shoes! She looks lovely….

    • Anonymous

Not exactly loving the shoes but I don’t hate them either. I think she looks lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/rachelruthlee Rachel Lee

Don’t like the shoes with it, but the dress is smashing. Crisp is exactly right!

    • Anonymous

She is rocking this look, head to toe – and those shoes are gorgeous AND perfect.  No Betty Draper Francis in sight.

    • Anonymous

she is a champagne party. LOVELY

    • http://twitter.com/hpenfield Hannah Penfield

“…we tend to sniff when people wear the runway look head to toe, but she
looks so good here we can’t work up the disapproval. Just an all-around
super-pretty look.” Exactly my thoughts. Why isn’t this a WERQ?!?!?!?!

    • Anonymous

is this dress a different color than the runway version, or is it just picking the warm shades surrounding it?  i like the warm champagne glow better than the icy silver.

    • Adella Thompson

Love the subtle shift in color from the runway dress to hers. Complements her hair and complexion perfectly!

    • Anonymous

Huh. Separately, love the shoes but feel meh about the dress. Agree that the combo is visually striking, kinda like the fashion equivalent of pairing sweet with savory.
