In or Out: Olivia Palermo in Christian Dior

Posted on October 03, 2011

Darlings, last week’s Project Runway judge and supposed fashionista Olivia Palermo hit the Christian Dior show in Paris wearing everything she owns at once.

Olivia Palermo in Christian DiorOlivia Palermo attends the Christian Dior Spring 2012 show during Paris Fashion Week at Musee Rodin in a Christian Dior dress.

Jesus, Olivia. Forget taking one thing off before you leave the house; how about you take roughly six things off? We don’t love the dress, but it’s Dior of course, and entirely appropriate for Paris Fashion Week. It’s literally everything else that’s bothering us. Those earrings are pretty fabulous, as is the big bangle she’s wearing, the red purse she’s carrying, and the cute little biker boots she’s got on. It’s just that none of them really go with the dress and they’re all way too big and attention-drawing to be worn at the same time. A dress that’s so very ooh-la-la Parisian should be paired with more delicate pieces than the ones she’s sporting here. You might convince us that one chunky, incongruous statement-making piece would be chic, but to have all of the accessories fighting with each other like this? We seriously question her cred.

Vote Now!
IN! It’s bold and modern to wear mismatched pieces!

OUT! She looks like she used a dartboard to pick her accessories!

Both Julianne Hough’s Roach Motel dress and Evan Rachel Woods Madonnarama getup got OUTs from the commentariat.

      OUT but gimme those earrings.

      • Anonymous

        Word! LOVE those earrings too!

      • Sobaika Mirza

We’re going to have to fight over them.

        • MilaXX

I’ll take all 3 of you for them

          • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Or we could all pitch in and share. That way maybe we could afford them.

              We could alternate days,

OUT. I bow to TLo’s opinion on this one – it just doesn’t all go.

    • Anonymous

Out, although if said accessories were taken off it would be an In

    • Anonymous

OUT, but dispersed appropriately, each piece could contribute to a very IN ensemble.  Wish I could see the heels on those boots …

Earrings, boots and purse Go. (Especially the boots). Bracelet Stays.

      • Anonymous

Agree. Would be a serious IN with some editing but not as is.

    • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

IN. a lot of things going on, but she looks gorgeous

      • Anonymous

I think we’re in the minority here, but I think she looks great. And the thing is, Paris is not New York, and she looks like a fashion editor at Paris Fashion Week, a wholly different kind of milieu calling for a different standard.

      • Sobaika Mirza

In… no wait, OUT. This is confusing. I don’t think she looks particularly GREAT but it’s very appropriate for the setting and over-accessorizing is sort of her thing. I honestly find the most offensive thing about the outfit to be her hair. She looks severe so slicked back and it doesn’t work with her face, not to mention that random curl sticking up behind her left ear.

      • Anonymous

I agree! Thin, lovely, confident, and happy! The best accessories!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

      OUT!!!!!
She is an over accessorized mess.  And I don’t care if its Dior. Its an effing nightgown ferchrissakes.

As Suzanne Sugarbaker said: “I don’t care if it has a fancy French name and some sauce. It’s still just a little shrimp.”

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Tell it, Sister!  The empress has no clothes, but every accessory on earth. (that’s made by Piperlime, of course)

You can always count on the Sugarbaker sisters to get to the heart of the matter.

        Out:
She’s wearing everything but the kitchen sink. And seriously, a bit of the
sheer stuff goes a long way. It looks like she’s wearing a sheer negligee over her dress.

One thing though. She DOES have facial expressions. After her judging stint on PR, I
wasn’t sure her facial muscles were capable of movement.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_C65IT4K6RYN4TWRMFJOI3VUDAI Olechka Milashka

Somebody used the Piperlime wall to accessorize!  I am sorry, you’re out!

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

Use the Piperlime wall thoughtfully, Olivia.

    • Margot Brose

      *facepalm* O to the UT

    • Anonymous

Out, she should’ve done the purse only.  She could keep on the little gold bracelet.

But I want the earrings and cuff.

    • Anonymous

Ew!  Talk about “over-accessorized”, something the judges are always criticizing on Project Runway.
I wasn’t a fan of hers on the show, for whatever it’s worth.

      • Anonymous

        amen to that!

    • scottyf

I don’t think you gentlemen understand:

Ms. Palermo IS the Piperlime Accessories Wall.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

She definitely has the personality of a wall.

      • Anonymous

        Scotty – you are just laugh-out-loud funny…

    • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

She should’ve taken her advice from last week’s episode and opted for a skort or a wide-leg short instead, amirite? Ugh.

    • Anonymous

Out on several counts.  She has a habit of overdoing it, and this getup falls right into that hole.  Those earrings should should have been the focus, instead of one in an assortment of items grabbed and slapped together.  Also, having seen her, for better or worse, too many times in magazines, this is not her style at all.  She isn’t even vaguely credible in pulling this off.

      • Anonymous

I think her makeup looks beautiful, and I like the earrings, but I think they fight with each other and don’t go well.

    • Anonymous

She was overaccessorized on PR, too, with those tacky necklaces.  But check out the guy behind her in the first pictures, with the striped shirt and maybe overly-matchy shoes.  Is he not the cutest thing ever?

      • Anonymous

I’ll bet he’s thinking oh honey, you need to go back home and start over.

    • http://twitter.com/Knitsib Knitsib

Agreed. Hate the dress; love the accessories, in particular the red/turquoise colour combo. But she needed to pare it down to ONE turquoise accessory and ONE red accessory. Okay, maybe two red, if lips and/or nails count as the second.

    • Anonymous

      Out. Too much going on

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I told you to check her papers! She is a fake. And I think the other night she came close to this kind of ‘kitchen sink’ mentality as well although TLo didn’t agree with me that time. Glad to see her true colors brought into the daylight. She’s not stylish but she sure as hell thinks she is. I hope Dior blacklists her for wearing those boots with that dress.

    • Anonymous

Those boots with that dress is a deadly combination. In the dead way. OUT.

    • Anonymous

Hair , makeup and dress alone would’ve looked great.  Shoes, purse, jewelry put this look at 5 yrs old.

      OUT. Painful to examine.
Did Kimberley design the little batwing camisole, or did Olivia lend it to her to use as a template for her Sheepdogs drummer’s shirt?

    • Anonymous

Out. Primarily for the purse and bangles. Also, I liked her hair better on PR.

    • Anonymous

she just needs to unbutton her collar, take down her hair and mess it up, and she’s ready for the avalon ballroom in SF 1967.
and adding to that pile of accessories, don’t forget the red nail polish.

    • muzan-e

Oh my Lord of the Rings, is she wearing Dior lipstick, too? Rouge Dior! Zinnia Red! Delicious hilarity! I love.

(Alas: the finish looks a little more Guerlain than Dior. But still – what if – !)

      • muzan-e

Wait a moment. What’s that on her nails?

Could it be from Dior’s limited edition Les Rouges collection? Trafalgar, to be exact?

…. I am maybe freaking out a little here.

    • Anonymous

out.  the makeup was perfect for the dress.  i’d have added yards and yards of tiny pearls and sleek little mules and might have gone with a nice turquoise clutch.  wtf is going on with that belt?  should either be BELT or a fabric tie.  but this is just me and it’s monday and I’m cranky.

OUT! Sadly because I usually love her style. But there’s too much going on here. It’s almost like she was too scared to go all goth and tried to pull the outfit into another direction which didn’t quite work.

*sigh*  What a waste of some fab accessories.  I agree with you boys whole-heartedly.  And I really love her hair and makeup with the look.  But everything but the dress needs to go.  Some small, simple, sparkly earrings, lighter shoes and a kick-ass clutch would have been perfection.  OUT

    • Anonymous

Shes Edina Monsoon, no idea when to quit.

    • Anonymous

OUT – she looks like when little girls play dress up.  BTW, who is she?

    • Anonymous

Is there an “ehhh” vote? I think TLo’s gone kind of OTT b/c they clearly think Olivia Palermo has no taste from their other comments about her – but unlike them, I don’t think she’s dripping with accessories.

Dead-on about that Dior dress, though – WTF?

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

WTF indeed. I hate this trend, with a sheer covering over a perfectly good dress. Almost no one can pull it off. She is not one of the few who can.

I’d say she’s over-accessorized because each piece is so dramatic on its own, and they don’t really work together.

    • Anonymous

OUT! She ruined the dress with all that crap. She looks like a crazy cat lady. A rich crazy cat lady but a cat lady all the same. Usually I am not fond of those sheer dress/skirt combos but I like this one. It could have been so good if she only toned it down, for this reason it hate all the more.

    • Anonymous

OUT!  She’s making me miss Bluefly…or everything else before Piperlime.

    • Anonymous

Out. The over accessorizing makes this look really un-chic. Everything is this look is such a statement that it is like 10 loud people talking at once.

    • http://twitter.com/texasinafrica Laura Seay

Out. She could’ve gotten away with the earrings and the bracelet, and maybe even the bag, but those boots destroy the outfit.

    • Anonymous

She can keep the bangle.  The earrings, shoes, and bag have to go.   Especially the shoes.  They ruin the dress.  The earrings are AWESOME, but not with this look.  The shoes & bag might be too, but they look so bad with this dress that it is hard to tell.  Make up & hair are perfect, but they’re not enough to save her.  OUT.

OUT, it is all crappy looking, I hate the whole see-through-to-whatever’s-under look, the earrings are too big, the lipstick is too red, the purse is awful, the booties are inappropriate, and she looked much better as a blonde.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

    • Anonymous

Adding my vote to all those below who hate the sheer curtain dresses. Totally hate. Wish they would go away.

Otherwise, I agree with TLo, who used the operative word: “delicate.”  A (shitty) dress like this calls for delicate accessories, not biker boots, belt-buckle earrings, and a handbag.

      OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

She lost me with the skirt…thing…she’s got going on. Surely there was a different bottom that can go with that fabulous blouse?

OUT!  the jewelry is clashing and those boots are THE ABSOLUTE WORST.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

      Geez, what a mess.

So, apparently accessories are her thing, but she’s a slip of a girl without
a lot of presence. She’s pretty, but not particularly charismatic.
Instead of trying to manufacture something that cannot be manufactured, she would do better to go with an understated look and one stand-out accessory.

I do love her make-up, though. She looks great in that shade of lip color, but it’s not enough to save her. OUT

    • Anonymous

      in.

she’s evil as all hell (viewers of “the city” will likely agree) but she knows her shit, and as an accessories editor/maven, she’s doing her job by letting her accessories take center stage. i don’t love the red purse here, but it’s a minor offense. as always, i begrudgingly admire the little cow.

      • Anonymous

also, she has a very british sensibility when it comes to accessories, which rears ots head whether she’s in her home stomping grounds of ues nyc or paris or wherever. so while most of us would say it’s overwrought or overdone, it’s her signature look and i like that she sticks with it. it’s less boring that way. fuck “take one thing off”… i like the exuberance her accessories lend to relatively standard and/or classic wardrobe pieces.

      I say IN!

get what you guys are saying, about over accessorizing, but its done quite subtly. Various shades and textures of black with some small pops of color in the accessories work really well together, and the slick hair perfectly showcases the earrings. She’s had a bit of a rocky socialite start, but she has been pretty consistently nailing it in my opinion. love the attitude of the boots too!

    • chhiv_t

I kept looking at the guy in the background with the color banded shirt and colored shoes.

IN – She’s still gorgeous & pulls it off.

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

i wore an almost identical dress to my mother’s funeral. true, that was almost twenty years ago {any longterm contact w/ my father is guaranteed to impair one’s longevity} & the dress, itself, was about a hundred years older than that. & meant to be worn in layers, of course, in order to impact its sheerness & in a way inexplicable to the postpostpostpostmodern fashionista, above. who is a fashionista-designate, of course & due to money, but who in no way has earned the title. unless one earns it by buying. & wearing. too many things at once, as per.

Um. No. Just… No. OUT. Please choose one thoughtful accessory next time, Ms. Palermo, not your whole closest. Although your make-up is great.

This is from Piperlime’s new “Grab Everything In A Housefire” line.

    • http://twitter.com/KathleenGillies Kathleen Gillies

Lose the sheer dress or shorten it to the same length as the mini under it, then she can keep the boots.  I am perplexed as to how the earrings and matchy cuff go with this dress but ok, just pick one and make sure it’s not the earrings.  Ditch the center part and tied back hair, a few softness will make her look younger.   Wrong bag entirely.  Keep the gold watch.

Agree completely.  Love the bracelet, if it was the only jewelry–rip that sheer skirt right off or shorten it because the dress otherwise is pretty great.  The earrings–goodbye–call too much attention to themselves.  But I don’t know whether to say out or in, so I guess that means out.

Out.  Its not just that it too many accessories, its that each accessory is so different.  Nothing is complementary.

    • Megan Burgess

Out. Someone please explain the “sheer, floor length skirt over a shorter skirt” trend because I just do not get it.

OUT, but let’s talk about how great the guy behind her wearing Prada looks.

      • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

Which is the guy in Prada? In the stripes?  HOT.

    • Anonymous

I love her earrings!!! I am giving her an IN.

Out.  It looks awful!  it’s too bad too because her face and make up look gorgeous.

    • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

OUT, OUT, OUT!  The top is nice, but the bottom is awful.  And the accessories:  Dart board fashion!!!

Though the makeup and hair are nice, if a bit severe.

    • Anonymous

I like the dress, love the earrings and her skin is beautiful. If you squint the rest goes away so I’m giving her an “IN”

    • Geno Boggiatto

In! It takes a certain girl, but I think she’s pulling off this “mis-matched” look.

    • Lies L.

I’m gonna declare her IN. But only just. She just looks sort of… beautiful.

    • Anonymous

      Dartboard indeed!

in. cant explain why, im just feeling it.

    • Mary McClelland

Out – too much. So much stuff you don’t look at the girl wearing it!

    • Anonymous

OUT! ugh. Again..she’s trying too hard. Dior and Doc Martens are the next big thing? Not together!

    • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

She could do better. But her face is so gorgeous, that make-up is amazing, her eyes look large but without taking focus away from her perfect red lips.

    • Anonymous

Out, but she’s really pretty. I can’t wait for that sheer skirt thing over the short skirt thing to go away, because I love the dress without the overslip.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sorana.tarmu Sorana Tarmu

Yes, yes, but she brought it, nevertheless. IN.

    • elzatelzabelz

OUT- Love the fabulous accessories, but not all at once, not with that mish-moshed Dior.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

I love the dress. Everything else gots to go. Immediately. If that means she has to be walking around barefoot, fine. Let the dress speak for itself.

Out, but i want all of those things so i can employ them correctly….

OUT. The girl does admit on Piperlime that she loves accessories, the more the better – I see she wasn’t exaggerating.

    • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

out – don’t like her and don’t like her accessories.

      Out. Dartboard while blindfolded.

I hate that dress.  It looks droopy and sad, and the long sheer skirt trend really needs to die.  OUT.

OUT. Overstyling and an ugly dress.

Oh, Olivia, as a newly converted fan of yours, I find this very disappointing. OUT!

Out.  As in Outhouse.  Doesn’t work and she looks like she got dressed in a smelly, dank, dark place.

      OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

Out – it’s like she randomly raided a second hand store and threw on whatever bag/shoes/earrings she found there without regard to whether they went with her outfit or even with each other.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

She’s very pretty.  I don’t mind the dress, although I don’t usually like see through granny skirts over a mini.  But you’re right — way too much stuff!  Especially those shoes – her feet look HUGE!  Makeup is nice, though.  All in all, OUT.

Out.  Too much. Hurts. My. Eyes.
