In or Out: Jessica Biel in Giambattista Valli

Posted on October 31, 2011

Jessica’s apparently feeling downright angelic, you guys.

Jessica Biel for Giambattista ValliJessica Biel attends the Fashion Group International’s 28th annual Night of Stars in New York City in a Giambattista Valli gown.

Personally, we think she looks like a Hallmark Christmas tree topper, but that’s just us. Some people go for that sort of thing. We think she needed edgier hair than that Ma Ingalls ‘do she’s sporting and more dramatic makeup to take this away from sickly-sweet. Then again, maybe sickly-sweet was the goal. Kittens make the call as to whether this all works.

        If linebackers wore gauze…

    • Sobaika Mirza

      Ew. No.

Don’t like her belt either, the one on the model is much more stylish and edges it up a bit.

      • up with pod people

oh interesting, the belt is the one thing I love about it.

        • Anonymous

I like the belt, but not with this.

      • Anonymous

I love the models belt, but it would probably make Biel look thick-waisted.

Then again, the proportions are off on the entire outfit so I don’t know why they would think twice about the belt when theres thos giant should pads to worry about.

        • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

yeah, maybe it would work on someone with a longer torso? Trying to figure out if it would work on ANYONE. still not sure I like it on the model. Better than on Biel, but still….

          • http://twitter.com/leslielies Leslie S

either cate blanchett or zoe saldana … so basically, only the fashion gods.

      • Anonymous

I agree.  Plus the model’s belt has movement; Jessica’s is too static and stiff so close to all that shoulder frouforall.

    • Anonymous

Honey, The Immortals is coming out next month.  It’s too late to audition.  And, even if it wasn’t…did you really think that was the right way to make a good impression?

      OUT.

OUT. If you had told me this was a wax replica of Jessica Biel, I would not have questioned you. She looks downright plastic.

    • Anonymous

Classic case of “this is not her dress,” and the styling is way off.

      • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

This isn’t her dress. It’s Barbara Mandell’s dress, circa 1980.

        • Anonymous

Bingo! The only thing missing is the Aquanet helmet hair.

      • http://twitter.com/ladonnazc LaDonna Carpenter

Completely agree.  This is Uma Thurman’s dress, or someone else who is a 8 feet tall, size 0 and has arms like toothpicks. I like the way it looks on the model, but she’s 8 feet tall, size 0 and has arms like a toothpick.

      OUT.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Oh Jessica, whatever am I to do with you?   That is WAY too much dress for you, and the overly referential gold leaf belt that imagines a laurel crown takes it straight to costume-land. And not in a good way. Mkay?  OUT

      • Anonymous

THAT’s why the belt bothers me! Thanks, I was drawing a blank.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Hey that’s what us minions are for, right?  Its about helping our pals in critique out whenever we can. :)

      Out… I can’t even pinpoint what’s so wrong it’s just… wrong…

      • http://squirrel-monkey.livejournal.com/ squirrel_monkey

It could be the shoulder ruffles swallowing her neck.

    • Anonymous

I never realized before how much she looks like a young Princess Anne.  Oh, and the dress is bad.

    • Anonymous

well dang, now I have the 7th Heaven theme song stuck in my head.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

remove the frou frou shoulder stuff and it would be a pretty dress.

    • Anonymous

*sigh* It would have been perfectly fine if not for those…shoulder…things.

    • Anonymous

Out. I don’t hate the dress, but it just isn’t working on her. This is one of those times that I understand what people are talking about when they say having a longer neck makes clothing work better on women. Those sleeve poufs look like linebacker pads on her. Not elegant at all.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yep. You got it in one, Anathema.  The proportions are totally wrong on her.  Plus the dress is too big.  Checking the model shot and the pic of her, the hem is a good 2 inches too long.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Long and skinny necks are important — I’d much rather dress a size 12 with a great neck than a size 0 with a short, stubby one.  There are just more options for neck and shoulders with a long neck.

        • Anonymous

I get complimented on my long, slim neck from time to time. When I was younger I thought it was a really weird thing to  notice on someone, but now that I’m older, I get it. My hairdresser told me many years ago that because of my neck and my face shape, I can wear pretty much any hairstyle. I would never have thought of those attributes being so beneficial. Beauty is strange.

          • Anonymous

Me and my short, thick German neck (as my aunts like to point out) are envious. Good for you!  :)

            • Anonymous

LOL Those are my two perceived good attributes. I’d exceed the Disqus word limit were I to list all my perceived flaws (beauty and otherwise). ;-)

    • Anonymous

Works on the model, but does NOT work on Ms. Biel. OUT.

    • Anonymous

Out.  Could be one of those dresses that only looks good in motion.

      • Anonymous

That’s what I was thinking!  It’s so straight and ode-on-a-Grecian-urn when standing still, but it’s beautiful in motion.

    • Anonymous

Looks like she’s voting herself OUT as well–that is not the facial expression of a gal who is feeling comfortable with her choice of outfit.

      OUT. Her shoulders look deflated.

    • Anonymous

She looks like Princess Leia, she has a similar hair style even. The puffy stuff on the shoulders is just WTF.

Princess Leia was never this fluffy…

    • BerlinerNYC

That dress is crazy. Very “First Communion of the Infanta.”

OUT.  It looks like she missed the sleeve opening on her right side.  And the belt with her jewelry, just….no.

    • Anonymous

Wait, there’s no automatic OUT for when one’s shoulders are made to be twice the size of one’s face?

    • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

Take the puffy sleeves off and she’d almost be an in..wayyyy too much volume around her face

    • Anonymous

I love this dress, but not on her. And I hate the belt with it. OUT.

    • Anonymous

It’s very sweet and could be improved by de-sweetening, but it’s pretty and she looks human and lovely and no faux pas are screaming at me, so IN.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I actually love it. I think it’s graceful and elegant. Sure, it’s definitely “trying” too hard in the angelic category, but I still think she looks great!

    • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

The dress is wearing her instead of the other way around. Out.

    • Anonymous

      Tree Topper!  OUT!  Hahahaha

    • Anonymous

On Jessica, I do see Christmas tree angel, but on the model, I see 80s fantasy movie empress – or sorceress. The latter is actually a compliment, but it strikes me as one of those dresses that you can’t ever wear in real life. Certainly, she can’t, though the styling is not helping.

    • Anonymous

OUT, but I appreciate the attempt. The execution is just a little sad to me.

    • Judy_J

Looks way better on the runway model.  Out.

    • Anonymous

      Ew.

Not crazy about the dress anyway, but the only things that somewhat redeem the runway version are (1) the dazzling white, (2) the more visually interesting belt, and (3) the model working it like she owes back-rent.

Jessica looks so plain and unhappy just standing there in a dishwater-colored version of the original. Plus, the open-heart-surgery keyhole is unsettling and out of place given all the marshmallow fluff surrounding it.

      OUT.

      • Anonymous

“… working it like she owes back-rent.”

        So funny.

    • Anonymous

the clash between the belt and the bracelet is hurting my eyes!!!!

        … through the pearly gates.

    • Clay Thompson

OUT.  The sleeve interest has literally fallen flat, and they need to be re-invigorated to serve their purpose.  The hair also needs to pulled back tightly with 0 volume to not compete with the shoulder accessories.  She looks like she is trying way too hard in this get-up.

    • Brad and Anne White

      Very pretty. IN.

    • Anonymous

I think that dress is better while in motion.  Standing around, not so much.

      Out.  Hurling.

    • Anonymous

yes, perhaps too angelic, but i can’t really say she looks bad. IN

If she took the capelet off then…wait, what??

    • Anonymous

      Angelic, no.  Linebacker, yes.  OUT.

    • Mariah J

OUT…this is why avant garde runway looks do not work in real life, the nice fluttering wings on the model deflate and end up looking like giant shoulder pads.

    • Sara__B

I suspect this is a dress that needs to be in motion all the time. She’s made unfortunate styling choices, too — the smoothed-down sleeve ruffles now look heavy and bulky, the belt is much less interesting, and her hair and makeup are, yes, too Ma Ingalls. Sickly sweet indeed. OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/Deac82 Mike M.

      Needs a turban

    • Anonymous

OUT. With her broad, volleyball-esque shoulders, she looks like a linebacker in this thing.

    • Anonymous

It’s not as bad as I thought it would be from the header photo but the hair is definitely hurting the look, and she just barely lost the fight with those monster shoulders. OUT.

Any stylist who looks at this dress and thinks anything other than editorial should be fired.

    • http://twitter.com/baxterbartley Becky Bartley

Love the belt, but ehh on the dress. Maybe if it was a different color or just lost the marshmallow fluff shoulders it would work?
And yes the styling needs to edgier. I would love to see a bright red lip with this.

    • Anonymous

Well, she was on 7th heaven….
      OUT.

      “OUT!  I’m gonna hurl”!!!!

    • Anonymous

I’m a stickler for correct hemlines. Floor-length means it hangs just above the floor, like it does on the model. Now she looks like a 6 year old girl. who has raided her mum’s closet. OUT.

      • Anonymous

Seems to be the latest rage — having the hem of a dress puddle on the floor. Like what they did with curtains starting about 15 yrs ago. It has to be done with the RIGHT dress, or it just looks too long and disproportionate. Makes for very dirty hems, no?

    • Anonymous

PRINCESS PUFFY SLEEVES! You are OUT.

    • Anonymous

If you took off the tissue dispenser shoulders, this would be a rocking IN.  As it is, it’s a disappointing Out.  She’s so pretty, and she dresses her body so very, very badly.  There needs to be a stylist out there who specializes in the “boyish” figured women of Hollywood.  Hillary Swank could use the same help.

    • Anonymous

Double plus IN. I think this is the best she has ever looked, like Joan Crawford in Letty Lynton.

    • Anonymous

My first thought was this was a dress that could have been worn by a movie star in the 30s or 40s, and I was trying to imagine the star and how she would have styled it. Katherine Hepburn – her natural toughness paired with the softness would have worked, or Joan Crawford? Dietrich definitely, and maybe Garbo…

It doesn’t work for Jessica Biel, however, she’s too small, short-necked and “soft” herself, soft meaning pretty, and princess-like, not a bad thing, just not for this dress.

      • Anonymous

Joan Crawford in Letty Lynton (19320 wore   a white dress with huge ruffled sleeves, designed by Adrian. It was widely copied and hugely influential for the evening looks for the rest of the decade.

        • Anonymous

Sorry SewingSiren, I didn’t read your comment first before posting, but we are certainly on the same page! The dress itself is great, just doesn’t work 100% with Jessica, although to be fair, she doesn’t look bad, either.

      • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly!  On the model, the dress definitely evokes the 30s/40s starlet sweeping into a room, giving fierce face, in dramatic black and white, in a truly gasp-worthy moment.  On Jessica, the gasp has left the building.

    • Anonymous

And I love the Ma Ingalls hair too. I’m really hoping that comes in style. Preferably  with flecks of grey. Many many flecks of grey….

    • Anonymous

I’m with the minions – this plain, dull, boring girl cannot possibly handle GV and certainly not this dress. It’s for an Iman or the other four people in the world who can even hold a candle to her (I’m not sure who that is but it’ll come to me). That hair! aaaccckkk!!!

    • Anonymous

I like this a lot.  Her makeup needed more oomph though.  IN

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002209332020 Molly Maguire

So dreamy. So delicate. So stupid…on her, and maybe on anyone but the model, whose headband says it all: peignoir for bedtime ablutions. Also: can’t anyone hem a skirt anymore?

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

I like the look though I think the belt on the runway worked better than the one that Jessica is wearing. That belt had a little more edge to it, which was nice. The hair is fine; I think that it needed to be up so as not to interfere with the somewhat complicated shoulders on the dress. Definitely an “IN” for me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ChereeWinston Cheree Winston

I could like the dress, but.. that belt doesn’t work here. And I hate the hair. OUT.

She thinks she’s dressed to the nines but this is closer to 7th heaven. It’s close. She’d probably get more IN votes if her hair was in a sleek pony tail with out a center part and maybe a funkier belt. That hair ruined it. I actually like the dress but not enough to give her an IN. OUT.

I actually quite like the dress.  I think it also suits the event she’s attending, but she really did need to toughen it up with edgier hair/makeup or accessories.

    • Geno Boggiatto

      OUT.

    • Anonymous

OUT.  I love the bottom of that dress, but the sleeves with that BELT! I cannot with that belt.

    • Anonymous

Brilliant halloween costume!  Also doubles as a Christmas ornament as TLo aptly notes.  Any other day of the year and it’s OUT!

    • Anonymous

The butter-cream shoulder ruffles are a bit too much.  The model has the bitch-tude to make them work, but Jessie here is sadly lacking.  OUT

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

This dress calls for a very regal, imposing attitude if it’s going to work. Otherwise, the layers and folds will drown, smother and otherwise destroy the wearer. I can see Sophia Loren working it. But this isn’t Jessica Biel’s dress.

      • Anonymous

OMG!  Sofia L. would soooo work that dress like it was her job and it’s bonus time!

        • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

‘And it’s bonus time!’ LOL- love it!

    • Laura Goulding

      Was she high?  Out.

    • Anonymous

This is just NOT a look for her. OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1094686382 Elizabeth Monroe Baker

Alexis Carrington called. She wants her dress back.

    • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

Hates it!  Belt is drab, hair and makeup are drab, jacket is baddddd

      • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

or maybe those wings are sewn to the dress??  BADDD

      IN!

i kinda really love it, in a dhristmassy, really gay way.

      Out.

I thought “bride cake topper for romantics”

    • Anonymous

      LOL!  OUT!

    • Natasha Fairweather

Out on the dress, but I love love love the belt.

    • Susan Carley Oliver

The sleeves remind anybody else of hops?  Just me, then?  OK, I’m off to get meself a pint.

I love the belt, and the skirt’s nice enough, but everything above the waist is a mish mash mess.

    • Anonymous

There’s a lot of TRY going on here.

I’ll give it an IN.  It’s glamorous bedsheets instead of boring bedsheets

    • oohsparkley!

Too much dress for her.  Out

    • Anonymous

Yuck.  The sleeves plus the spread on the floor plus the feather belt—fly away angel!  Out.

    • Anonymous

It makes her look neckless and squatty. UT!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KQSWLY2RUE3HAOERJI7HHORJJQ Debby Barbero

Out.  It looks great on the model and horrid on the woman!  Is it because it is static in the pictures of Biel?  As several others have mentioned, she does look like she’s wearing football padded shoulders as well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

Love the belt…. that is all. OUT

    • Anonymous

Out.  The shoulders look like a matador’s cape.  And the dress is not flattering.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

      OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/chloe.stabler Chloe Stabler

OUT.  You would have to be superhuman to pull off the shoulders.  Even the model is struggling.

    • http://twitter.com/BeantownMrs Praggya R. Barretto

Out. She looks like there are those shelf-shaped mushrooms growing on her arms.

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

      Those shoulders are insane. OUT.

    • Emily Roach

Out. That’s a dress to WALK in. not stand in. Too bad!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PCARAOJSL553GBBPQSLRYD5REE L.

OUT, but on the model its very Lucy Ricardo.

    • Anonymous

OUT!  That dress is sooo wearing her instead of the other way around.  And why is it all limp looking compared to the model?  Not the skirt, I get that: movement.  But the sleeves are less dramatic as well, just dull.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jill-Tracy/100001557759289 Jill Tracy

      Ugh! No, no, no, OUT!!

Only Olivia de Havilland should look like Olivia de Havilland. OUT.

    • http://toodles.yelp.com AWStevens

I don’t think she’s getting it regular from JT anymore and therefore declared herself a restored “virgin”.  This looks more costumey than anything.  OUT.

    • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

Out. As fluffy as those shoulder pads are, they actually appear to be weighing her down. She looks downright short here, where normally she looks statuesque.

    • Anonymous

I wouldn’t go so far as to say I want to hurl but definitely out.  It makes her look to fluffy and I doubt that was her goal.  I like the belt on the runway much better.  Completely agree with the hair and make up.

    • Anonymous

The belt placement coupled with the floor-puddling length isn’t doing her proportions any favors.  I think it works well on the model, but Jessica’s not tall enough for that dress.  I also think the belt on the runway version is much better; it lengthens the lines rather than cutting the body in half.

      OUT.

    • Anonymous

I saw this on her in motion–some film clip–and it looked a lot better on her than these still shots–so I’m going to give it a reluctant in–also because I’ve been giving outs for about the last 15 looks, and I’m bored with my own negativity.

    • Anonymous

OUT.  Biel just doesn’t seem fashiony (I know, a highly technical term) enough to pull off this dress.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

That dress should be burned. It would be a public service. And Ms. Biel should get a week in fashion detention for wearing it. OUT

    • Anonymous

She looks like a blancmange. She’s going to turn us all into Scotsmen and win Wimbledon!

      Which is to say, OUT.

    • Anonymous

In (an its okay sort of in, not a that’s fabulous in).  It is a sweet look, but that’s okay once in a while.

    • Anonymous

Well I’m obviously in the minority here but I think she looks great!  It’s a high-fashion, off the runway look for a high-fashion event.  She’s chic, lovely and IN!

    • http://twitter.com/tommarkiewicz88 tom markiewicz

frankly, i don’t think she has the height to pull it off. she obviously had it hemmed from the runway look, and with those proportions the shoulder treatment is too overwhelming. i think the simple up-do was the way to go, i just don’t think this is her dress. i could see zoe saldana rocking this though

    • Anonymous

      Hate it. Out

    • Anonymous

Out out out out out. The whole combination is awful.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

What a disaster. What the hell was she thinking? OUT!

    • Anonymous

Big time OUT.  She needs to be about a foot taller to pull this off…

    • Anonymous

She just always looks sort of masculine to me, I guess it’s her very athletic build. Nothing wrong with an athletic build (I fall into that category myself) but it’s almost like she overcompensates by going too girly. That might make sense only in my head because I am distracted by the Scott Caan on my TV right now. Bottom line: OUT!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JQSQJRAL4YYWB2OZNHNUHKZAEY Christopher

      Christmas ornament,  out.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_66KPZ36LMHMRQOX3HIJGHRNNUA MandyM

This would look sweet on someone like Reese Witherspoon. It’s not her dress. She looks like she has football pads on her shoulders.

    • Anonymous

This makes my teeth hurt. Easy OUT.

    • bailey debruynkops

      cant stand her. no/out

    • Anonymous

      No. OUT

    • Anonymous

OUT! It is too much of a look for her.

    • LocMama

I’m chiming in before I’m influenced by the commentariat.  I say IN.  She looks romantic & soft.  She’s got a very athletic bod and can tend to look harsh.  Her broad shoulders are carrying those football pads just fine.  Besides, I thought Ma Ingalls was a hottie!

    • Anonymous

      Out.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Out. The proportions are all wrong on her.

    • Anonymous

What, the floaty white dress with wings wasn’t enough? She had to go and add feathers. OUT!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She’s just not stoic enough to pull this off.  Those sleeves make her look completely ridiculous.  The rest of the dress is really lovely, but the sleeves are swallowing her whole.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=768540908 Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out, she looks like a fluffy turtle.  Also while the feather belt is lovely in its own right, the original belt is much better with the dress.

    • Zubair Ghumro

IN! I think she looks demure and beautiful!

    • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

Out. It makes her look like she has no neck and is stumpy and short. None of those things are true. Only a 6′ tall model can work something like this, and I don’t like it much even on her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=527150091 Pat Biswanger

OUT.  You nailed it with Hallmark Christmas tree topper.

    • http://twitter.com/onetimeko maybe more

She looks gorgeous, but the hair’s off, she needs some accessory switching and she looks uncomfortable. She’s not really working it so cliche as it is, the dress is wearing her. OUT, but mainly because of her attitude… Some serious confidence and better styling could make this werq.

    • Anonymous

      UGLY

    • http://twitter.com/Kerry_McC Kerry McCombs

I’m feeling the opposite….she has those wide, athletic shoulders, and I think the frou frou softens them up a bit. I’m going to give it an “in.”

    • http://www.joannao.blogspot.com JoannaOC

Nah, weird combo of floaty and big shoulders.

    • http://www.joannao.blogspot.com JoannaOC

Flowy dresses don’t work on this lady.  Stick to structured dresses Jess!

Out. She and jessica Alba should start a club PBDGirls. Pretty But Dull. I mean they are both gorgeous and about as appealing as unsweetened oatmeal.
