In or Out: Jessica Alba in Christian Dior

Posted on October 19, 2011

We’re of two minds about this look from Jessica. Which is good, since, despite the joined-at-the-hip lifestyle that has us spending all day, every day within 20 feet of each other (there aren’t that many blogging couples out there for a reason), we are, literally, of two minds.

Anyway, hit it, Jessica:

Jessica Alba in Christian DiorJessica Alba attends The Clinton Foundation’s ‘A Decade Of Difference’ Gala at The Hollywood Palladium in Christian Dior. Shoes by Brian Atwood, clutch by Roger Vivier, and Jewelry by Neil Lane.

First mind: It’s cute; it’s sassy; it’s different. We are always going to sit up and take notice when a gal hits a red carpet in something other than a folded-napkin or lace (or lacey folded napkin) cocktail dress. We like the blue velvet skirt (which we suppose is part of a blue velvet dress) most of all. And the look has an overall relaxed chic feel to it that we respond well to.

Second mind: That blouse is droopy, droopy, droopy. We’re kind of digging the idea of a sheer blouse over a dress, but we’re not sure this was the way to go. The placement of that … black stuff (embroidery? Sharpie pen?) is very unfortunate because it’s forming an optical illusion that places her breasts down at her waist. Also, aren’t we done with the heavy black tights paired with black shoes thing? And isn’t that bag awfully showy for such a relaxed look?

Kittens make the call:

      LOVE.

Yes. I agree. I think this is gorgeous.

There is good different and bad different. This looks hideous.

This is from the Katie Holmes book of fugly.

That bag? I thought the “trend” of carrying a little dog had somehow come back.

All by itself, that makes it an OUT.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GFMOZFM3WT3T56EZHVZFK7UXSI Ramon

She looks like she has hair under her breasts. OUT.

      • Anonymous

That’s so gross! But you’re right; she does.

      • Anonymous

OK, now I can’t get that thought out of my mind…OUT!

    • http://twitter.com/adleredneko Aki

I think that other than a few minor styling issues, if there weren’t that black embroidery, this would be a pretty look.  I want to say IN, but I think it’s a little bit too hit and miss.  So a very barely OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

Out. It’s droopy and I don’t like the black shoes with the black tights. And I hate the purse. Also, I think velvet is gross.

    • Anonymous

Either the shirt or the skirt has to be more fitted. Number one rule of them when I get dressed! Love the pieces separately though.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

      I like it. IN.

    • Anonymous

I think the embroidery is meant to play with the idea of a loose vest.

Meh. IN, I think. I generally the whole droopy-waisted loose blouse thing, but if you’re going to do it, I think she’s doing it pretty well.

    • Sara__B

OUT. The black tights are too heavy for the sheer blouse. That’s what’s making it droopy and depressing. Ditch the tights and handbag (and perhaps change the shoes) and, poof, the droopy heaviness would probably disappear like magic.

    • Anonymous

Out.  I think I might like the dress, but the blouse is sad and even on the model it’s sad.  Plus, it doesn’t go with the dress.  Actually, I don’t like that blouse at all.  And I hate the hair.  I might be fine with the tights thing given it’s fall, except are her shoes actually black?  Are they suede?  Something’s off with the shoes.  Would have been better with a bootie.

In. The blouse is beautiful, and the look is different in a good way. I do not love the purse, icky.

    • http://stitchingincircles.etsy.com Tina

I like the bag, since it picks up on the black embroidery. I like that top a lot better with the pants that the model is wearing — here is becomes very girly and Christmasy.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Out – her boobs look sad.  And I don’t like the height of the hair.  Sorry Jessica.

    • Anonymous

I’m giving an ‘in’ because she’s not assaulting my eyes with short, tight and shiny.  progress!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OYMPLGS7S7467GQMKEWJDJ3N4A Deb

      In. Different. Cute.

    • Anonymous

I like the blouse better with pants (though I wish those pants weren’t nipped at the ankle) but the droopy boobery is a problem.

I think if you’re gonna wear a loose blouse with a design that draws the eye toward the waist, you need to hoist ‘em up as high as you can. And stand sideways.

    • Vaniljekjeks

Out.  I like the shoes though.

    • Rand Ortega

      OUT.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5LU5C262WB3Z5F4WZ6QGKXLNLE JaneM

Oh, I thought the bag was some kind of trim on the dress, which made it all look even worse.  I actually like the top part. Then it all goes south. out.

    • http://wineandwhiskeygirl.blogspot.com Amanda Semrick

Somehow she looks short and stocky.

And like she has to be careful and not tuck her boobs in.

      Out.

      OUT.

      Ouuuuut.

Navy & Black – my favorite color combination!

I’m giving her an IN based on that, and choosing to ignore the droopy blouse.

    • Sobaika Mirza

IN, although I could do without that ridiculous bag.

    • Anonymous

I really like it on the model, but not on her. I think it works much better with pants and more open for a deeper V, as on the runway, but I think it may be one of those looks which doesn’t really translate off of the runway – wearing something under it because of the sheerness doesn’t work with that blouse.

      So, Out, I guess.

    • Evan Hart

In! I liked looking out her outfit and that says it all, I think.

    • Anonymous

      OUT on principle. she bugs.

    • Anonymous

      Flaccid.  Out.

    • Anonymous

Like some of the elements but it doesn’t come together. Out.

    • Anonymous

Completely agree about the contrast. My exact reaction before reading your post was “Great color for the skirt, but why is the blouse melting?”

Still, I’ll give her an IN. If the blouse were less sheer it would be an out, but right now I can magically pretend the blouse isn’t even there.

    • Anonymous

I’m giving her an IN for being clever enough (scratch that: for having a stylist who is clever enough) to have used the Dior blouse in that way. Which I really like. I don’t think it makes her look as if she has droopy breasts, and I’ll bet it moves beautifully. Kind of gossamer. I like that.

The black tights with the black (satin?) shoes, however, are a serious mistake. Almost enough for an out. But not quite.

That blouse looks like the pre-surgery torso of a woman who lost 200+ pounds. Saggy, wrinkly, droopy, puckered, and altogether unpleasant. OUT.

Now that’s stuck in my mind – eek

        OUT

    • Anonymous

I kind of love the opaque tights with black shoes look. It’s very Debra Winger in Forget Paris.
In any case, this bitch ain’t no Debra Winger and that dress is droopy and unflattering. Je n’aime pas.

    • Anonymous

Sadly, I vote OUT. I love the idea, but the blouse looks sad. If it were a bit less droopy I would be all in favor of this look.

    • Anonymous

That shirt brings to mind the pirate shirt Seinfeld episode. OUT.

    • Anonymous

OUT. Droopy and she is carrying a Muppet for a purse.

    • Anonymous

The black tights make it too much of a school girl kind of look. With sheer hose it would be better. The blouse is unattractive on the model but I think looks better with the dress underneath. Still those tights make it OUT.

I’m of two minds as well, and I only technically have one.  In fact, there are times my husband would argue I don’t even hit one:)

However, I am AMAZED by couples that can work that closely together — I can’t imagine still speaking to my husband if I couldn’t get away from him for awhile!  In fact, when he’s talking to me when I’m working about my work, I generally want to slap him.  Like when I told him I wanted a sewing machine that could do leathers, and he argued with me for an hour that any machine could do it, you just needed a special needle, because he knew people who did RenFaire costumes…

Ditch the purse and it is IN! I’m being picky, it is in even with the straggly ostrich bag. I know the blouse is droopy but it is obviously hitting in the right place because I think it manages to avoid being unflattering. Love the hair and make up. Coud have done without the tights (or would have even preferred sheer tights!) but I know it is coming into the cooler months over there so she is excused.

I like it. Especially for her. It is kind of a change for Alba, isn’t it? I agree the bag isn’t right, and the tights make the look a little bottom heavy, but I’ll vote In just for seeing something different.

      I really love that blouse.

OUT. This fit does a huge disservice to her figure.  That and the black stockings with black shoes was completely unnecessary.

    • MilaXX

OUT! Number one reason being the illusion of droopy boobs which I’m surprised anyone who recently had a baby wouldn’t be more sensitive to. I also hate the tights and the bag just doesn’t go with the outfit at all. The less said about that hair, the better.

Ew.  That blouse is hideous. Maybe the black stuff under the boobs are just random strands of hair from the muppet she killed to make that ugly bag.  I wish I could see the rest of the dress underneath, but the skirt isn’t all that intriguing.  I hate the tights.  OUT!

This is a ‘I’m going to a play with my hubby’ look. Not red carpet.
Black tights and black shoes will never go out. Get over it men. It’s winter and we don’t like our pale legs.

But I DO agree with you on the tres hor-EEE-bleh blouse. My god! That’s what’s passing for high fashion? Old lady boobs? That shirt should be taken out back and shot. You can use the same gun they used on the ‘purse.’  OUT!

She looks a hot mess.  OUT.

I like the blouse, but I don’t like the dress or the tights.  I don’t think it is very flattering.

What an amazing transformation. The blouse that looked so cool with black pants now looks dowdy and sad. OUT!

Out.  The top is fine, over maybe a pencil skirt or a pair of jeans.  It would be super cute.  But with the saggy, floppy, half-assed skirt it looks like, well, the first thing I thought when I saw it was Junior High.  Don’t know why, but it just looks like she wasn’t trying.  This looks like a “grab whatever’s clean” outfit.  And I know she’s got an infant at home and all, but really…

OUT! I think I owned this blouse in the 50’s but it had little blue flocked dots all over it. Out then and still…

In, but not without its issues and minor complaints.

Out- the blouse is way too droopy and ruins her cute figure. And her clutch needs a shave. Love the skirt, and I really hope black tights with black shoes are still ok, ’cause that’s my default for the winter when I’m running late in the morning and hurrying to dress…

      Yech.  OUT.

Out – I wish that shirt was not so large and droopy, if it had been more fitted I think this look would have worked much better.

I like the velvet. The blouse IS too droopy though and the embroidery or whatever that is is in a very bad place. The shaggy bag has got to go too. Yuck. Out.

Out. Like the skirt/dress, but shoes, tights, bag and droopy embroidery must go. Also, would do a chiffon blouse that was open enough at top to show a bit of the dress. Otherwise it looks like a contrasting cami, which, ugh.

Out.  Like the color blue, but it’s too droopy.

I like it! I’m going to pretend I’m a Project Runway judge and offer the helpful criticism of “I would so wear that.” In.

Hate the clutch and agree that the embroidery on the shirt makes her boobs look 50 years older than she is – OUT.

OUT. It’s okay from the waist up, but the tights and hairy clutch ruin it.

      Nope. OUT.

OUT. The black tights are terrible and the black lace or whatever on the blouse is weird. No. No.

The black tights almost kill it, but not quite. IN.
