In or Out: Emma Stone in Giorgio Armani

Posted on October 13, 2011

Oh Miss Emma. You’re going to make us wag our fingers at you again. And we just gave you a WERQ! shoutout the other day. Tsk.

Emma Stone in Giorgio ArmaniEmma Stone attends the Giorgio Armani/Vanity Fair private dinner in Los Angeles, California in a Giorgio Armani dress.

Emma Stone in Giorgio Armani

We’ll start off saying nice things. For instance, that’s a really fantastic dress. Much better than the runway version with the unflattering extended hem. This short n’ sassy version suits you just fine and we love the colors.

Okay, that was the only nice thing we could come up with. Brace yourself, girl.

WHAT is UP with you ladies hitting the red carpet with such poor detailing lately? T Lo has HAD IT. You’ve got a killer Armani dress on and your hair looks like you slept on it! Your shoes look like something you’d wear to a management conference! THIS IS NOT A DRESS THAT CALLED OUT FOR NEUTRAL SHOES. Killer silver sandals! NOW! You heard us. Get right back in your limo, head home, and put on a pair of killer silver sandals. Oh, and say “Yes” the next time a jewelry company offers to shower you with merch. One cocktail ring with a strapless dress isn’t going to cut it, missy.

Vote Now!
IN! Switch to decaf, bitches! She looks HAWT!

OUT! You tell her, T Lo! Hit her again!

Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s “Virgin/Whore” dress got an IN from the commentariat. BECAUSE SHE DID IT RIGHT, EMMA STONE.

I think the hair plus the smug look suggests that it might *actually* be jbf hair.  In that case, In, for making it to the photo call on time anyway.

    • You know what, I’m giving her an IN just for that. 🙂 No really, she’d get an in either way, but I love that idea!

    • Anonymous

OMG, you’re right! That’s the story I’m going with. Rock on, Emma! IN.

  • Cheri Lee

I completely and totally agree!  I love this dress!  The color is amazing and it shines like new money!  It looks like whoever styled her thought that too much jewelry or shiny shoes would have competed too much with the dress and they were wrong!

  • Anonymous

I actually think I prefer the runway version. The extended hem adds a little weight to the dress and keeps it from being just another short shiny cocktail dress. Not that I dislike the short version. It is certainly cute, but I prefer the original.

Agreed on the hair and accessorizing. I understand wanting hair that isn’t too “done,” but this yoga hair trend is not a good one. It doesn’t read easy and effortless, as I think it is intended to do, it just reads sloppy and no effort at all.

The lack of jewelry is another noticeable trend. I don’t need to see women dripping in diamonds, but a little bangle or a small drop earring here and there would really help. Is it the economy? Are female stars afraid of alienating the other 99 percent?

Haven’t figured out whether this is an In or Out for me. I’m on the fence.

    • Anonymous

I prefer the longer version too. She looks like the poor relative. Bad shoes, awful hair and no jewelry spell OUT

  • Anonymous

I really like the dress on her, a lot…so she gets an IN.  Hate the blue eye shadow…too matchy to the the dress.  Her hair, shoes, makeup and lack of jewelery are big point deductions, but not enough to warrant an out…that’s how much I like the dress.  It’s fun, modern…perfect for a young starlet.   XD

It looks to me like the model is wearing pants/capris under the dress…idk.

  • Those shoes gave me a sad.

  • Anonymous

Would have liked different shoes, and better hair, but I cannot deny her an IN. The dress is just too eye-catching, and really goes great with her coloring.

  • That girl on Suburgatory is seriously gunning for you, Emma Stone, you need to try harder!

    • Anonymous

For real. Dead ringer and more insteresting.

    • MilaXX

Love her! cannot wait to see this actress on the RC. (especially so I can learn her name)

    • Hells yeah.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to say IN.  She clearly likes it, it fits her well, and her make-up is just fine.  Baby steps!

  • Anonymous

  • I like the longer length on the model, myself, but the short version is still very striking.  But her hair is awful, and her shoes are boring.  Out.

  • Anonymous

    You are exactly right.

  • Anonymous

No more passes for stupid shoe choices!  And that hair!  Shame on you!

It’s time to get tough with these girls. Anyone can unpack a pretty dress some designer has sent you and put it on.  That action does not a good look make.

    You are so OUT, missy!

  • Anonymous

Hate the hair, hate the shoes.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

Emma sure has been indulging in a lot of walk-of-shames lately. Fabulous dress, though I think I actually like the longer version a bit more.

  • Anonymous

Killer dress + Nap time hair + Ugly shoes = OUT

  • Anonymous

God…how can this beautiful dress rate an OUT? It makes me hurt to say it…but the devil is in the details, just like T Lo says.

  • Anonymous

I love the dress and the hair suits the whole just-been-f’ed vibe with her expression, but I agree that her shoes really killed it here. Like having your mom call right in the middle of a good snog (I’m not British, but I do love that saying so much). Some dangly earrings or flashy bracelets (one or the other, not both), and replacing the shoes woulda been a WERQ. As it is, it’s just an IN for me.

  • Love the dress, love her. However, I have to give her an OUT – the hair and makeup make her look tired, and I also wish she had better shoes. Maybe those are really comfortable?

  • lmawo I love the idea of jbf hair and poor Emma barely making it to the dinner in time! I think the hair is fine. No need to be perfectly done every time. Their are some looks that you can just pull your hair together for and I think this is one. The shoes are a bit blah but the dress carries this look to an IN!

  • Joyce VG

A la Fug Girls – scrolldown fug alert!  Her shoes look almost orthopedic!  Ugh.  OUT.  Just because.  (kick ass dress tho.)

  • Sara__B

Out. You tell her, T Lo! That dress is such fun, but she needed to put in some effort to make it fabulous.

  • Terence Ng

It looks so cheap on her, in a style Romy and Michelle wore to their high school reunion, or worse, like something Nomi wore each night in Showgirls.

    Love her, hate this. OUT.

  • Thank you! That is the first thing I thought of when I saw these photos. too! Love the dress hate the hair. OUT

  • Anonymous

A black crystal arm band. Hair in a ponytail. Done. And anything but the shoes she has on.

  • I think she looks pretty. IN

  • Sobaika Mirza

    That hair is atrocious.

  • Anonymous

Looks like a shiny bath towel with green stripes. Out.

  • Elena

Oh, sweetie, no. Out. And please do your hair next time.

  • Vaniljekjeks

Out.  Christmas wrapping paper.  BORING shoes.

    • Anonymous

      Same thought. Wrapping paper.

  • Anonymous

She is darling, but–judging from the hair and makeup–just stumbled over to the RC from several hours of boogie-ing at the sorority pledge dance.

  • Anonymous

I’m sorry, you can’t just throw on some dress–even if it IS Armani–tie your hair back, grab a pair of neutral heels and show up for the cameras.  This look needs a bitch slap.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

I believe my Jem doll had this dress.

  • Anonymous

why wont they listen to TLO?  OUT

  • OUT!  Poor detailing will no longer be excused!

  • Seriously! Mere mortal that I am, often my hair looks like that (well, probably not THAT good), and my jewelry collection is woefully short on fabulous pieces to go with my free designer dresses (ooops, delusions showing through). Emma isn’t a mere mortal though. Just a fabulous dress isn’t enough, dear. OUT.

  • Anonymous

I’m seeing Kate Hudson in her face. WHY am I seeing Kate bloody Hudson in her face?!

    • Anonymous

I’m sorry for you, because Kate Hudson is such a turnoff for me.

  • I agree on the granny shoes, but I kind of like the hair.

  • I miss jewelry *sigh*

  • Anonymous

The dress is beautiful!  However, the lackadaisical hair and ugly shoes combine to overwhelm the wonderfulness of it — an OUT for me.

  • Her hair is in dire need of conditioner! Usually it is flawless, so maybe it actually IS jbf hair.

  • absolutely IN. i love her makeup and hair. the shoes are great with this dress. oh, and that dress is fab/doesn’t need any jewelry.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Out.  The dress is beautiful, lovely color on her.  Would it kill her to run a brush through her hair?  And maybe put on some earrings and a bangle or two?  The shoes do NOT go with that dress.

  • Anonymous

out, definitely. the dress isn’t nice at all, either.

  • Judy_J

Way to kill a fabulous dress, Emma.  Out.

  • Yeah, she woosed (sp?) out on the shoes.  And, I knew she was gonna get it for the hair too.  But, cool dress…

Let’ s say Out – because just putting on an IN dress doesn’t automatically make YOU in.

    • Anonymous

      ‘wussed’ out?

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

Bathtub hair and two day old makeup? Yikes.

I don’t much care for the way she’s gift-wrapped, either.

  • Anonymous

This is a hard one. The dress is truly stunning and should deserve and IN all on its own. But there’s moral hazard at play here and I think there’s too much of that in the world today (cough*wallstreet*cough), so I’m disinclined to let the bedhead hair and staff meeting shoes get by.
    Has to be an OUT.

  • Anonymous

OUT for failing to exploit any of the potential of that dress, other than putting it on a great body. Hot mess.

  • Anonymous

Out. Agree with all the stuff you said. Dress, looks better as a top on the model. Bedhead indeed, more like I shoulda washed my hair 5 days ago. Thank you for wondering where all the jewelry is. It’s a ***ing recession for the rest of us. We need our glam with celebrities. STEP IT UP GALS!!!

  • Anonymous

Oh my dear, you murdered that beautiful dress and you are so very OUT! It was so sweet and beautiful and alive on the runway and It could have been beautiful on you, too. But… you took away the magic.

  • Samantha Irene

OUT. Hit her again! For shame with that one lame ring, and office shoes.

  • MilaXX

IN, but barely. The dress is doing all the heavy lifting here. She needs a killer pair of shoes and I would have gone for a wonder woman cuff instead of a chunky ring. hair and makeup is okay but not great.

  • Anonymous

She looks like a fifth grader dressed up in her eighth grade sister’s party dress. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Out. Not because her hair & accessories are underwhelming.

I agree that the shorter dress is better than the runway, but I think that the shorter dress (at least that much shorter, maybe I’d feel differently if it were a couple of inches longer?) doesn’t for me, support the visual weight of the flap? panel? whatever that piece is that starts as loose vertical ruching over her midriff and continues, turning into some kind of asymmetrical demi-train over her right hip.

  • The dress is the only good thing in the photo. Sometimes that is enough but not this time. Out.

  • Jacqui

She looks messy, maybe it was super windy where she was but without knowing that…OUT

  • Anonymous

you’re right….but maybe I’m just not bitchy enough. IN

  • Anonymous

TLo, we are having hem issues. I preferred the elegance of the longer hemline. I’m not loving these short sassy first grade birthday party dresses.

  • Anonymous

She looks like she just got out of an over-chlorinated pool and put on some wrapping paper.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

I like the dress, but the whole look is out.

  • Anonymous

It’s not the IN-nest she’s ever been, but the flaws don’t take her to an out for me.  Still IN.

  • OUT.  The shoes were downright shocking.

  • Anonymous

I don’t care for this dress–the fabric looks like wrapping paper. Her hair is a mess!

  • Anonymous

This is like writing an amazing paper and forgetting to type it up. Or put your name on it. Out!!!

  • Anonymous

I have to agree with TLo.  It’s an OUT.  She should have finished getting dressed before she left home.  The shoes are boring, jewelry non-existent and not even a clutch???  The dress is SO cute, it deserves more from her.

  • Anonymous

its a STUNNING dress, but its wearing her, not the other way around. too bad, OUT

  • Out. I like the dress but a cold and bitter kitten shows no mercy.

  • rachel schiff

IN.  She looks shimmery, pretty, and happy.  I like when she gets things right for her coloring.

T Lo, can you guys talk to us more about hair one day?  Do you ever think messy looks can be werq’d, or do you think almost any fancy outfit would look better with sleek hair?  And does sleek mean straightened?  What about curls?

  • Barely IN, because I think the hair works and the dress is great. And the shoes aren’t THAT bad, come on.

  • Mall rat hair and makeup!  UGH.  O to the UT.

  • Anonymous

    Ohh I like the dress!
About the hair though, I seem to remember seeing some silly magazine somewhere that said this type of hair is the trend for fall. Loose, wavy, kind of messy looking hair. I don’t know, but it doesn’t work with this dress. Her shoes make me sad and that cocktail ring really isn’t enough like so many have said before me. Out, sadly.

  • as much as it hurts me to say it, because i absolutely adore this girl, but OUT

  • Oh no, how can you do this to me? I am pretty sure this girl will be my daughter-in-law one day, since both my son and my daughter are in love with her.  But your comments about the poor styling are so true..yet that dress is so very pretty. Should I count her as an IN just because of a great dress or an OUT because of blah styling?

Ok, this shouldn’t be so hard.  I’ll let her squeak by with an IN. Whew. I need a nap!

  • Anonymous

    ugh. those SHOES! gack!

  • Anonymous

Honey please. You’re not even trying.

  • In, I don’t mind the hair so much, but I agree about those ugly shoes.

  • Anonymous

You are so right, TLo.  Out.

  • in (note the lower case). But only for the dress. Everything else is, how you say, tragique?

  • You couldn’t be more right, TLo. The dress is fantastic, but everything else absolutely kills it.

  • Anonymous

shes beginning to give me the pre-rehab vibe she looks a mess many a time lately. Hope not

The lack of amazing shoes, hair, and jewelry ruin it for me.

  • OUT – looks like she just came out of the dressing room after hours and hours of shopping  – “I found the dress I’m going to wear to the Vanity Fair dinner. Thank god! I’m exhausted.”

  • Anonymous

not working for me. the hair is fine. if she needed a piece of jewelry it should be in a flat tone. I’m going to give her a threshold. In nor out.

  • out,  more for the dress on her rather than the accessories. Not really loving the hem.  But it definitely needs some wrist jewelry.

  • Anonymous

Oh, man.  I can’t OUT when the dress is that beautiful but I can’t IN when the shoes are a crapocalypse either… I respectfully abstain.

  • Anonymous

reluctantly, out–for the reasons stated by TLo.

  • OUT! The lack of detailing makes that stunning dress look like little more than a trash bag she tied around herself in a hurry as she rushed out the door. Sad.

  • elzatelzabelz

In- only because I love her hair always & forever. You’re right (as usual), different shoes and stacked bracelets and she is set.

  • Anonymous

Whyyy not black pumps? This is an out for all the reasons you mentioned- she really let down an amazing dress with her hair and accessories.

  • I must go with an IN. Changes alone call for a fabulous upgrade!

  • Anonymous

Oh come on, this is still an IN. And that is definitely JBF hair, and it definitely works.

  • the shoes are DREADFUL

  • Lisa

Yeah, it looks like the boring shoes and the messy hair that you have on in the dressing room when you first try on the killer dress in the store.

  • Anonymous

IN, but just.   Her hair is a mess.

I do love the dress, though.  Especially the runway version.  It’s not an extended hem.  It’s cigarette pants slit up the sideseam.  I’m a sucker for that 50’s cigarette pant under a tunic/dress look if it’s done well.

However, it usually isn’t done well.

  • Anonymous

The dress on it’s own isn’t pretty enough, in my eyes, to trump the shoes and hair. Meh, OUT.

  • Anonymous

Her body language is totally “Yeah, the shoes, I know, sorry, sorry!!!” She KNOWS she messed it up.

  • Yes, her neck is screaming for a necklace, arms for bracelets, boo for those shoes! OUT.

  • Grace Ritt

IN. I like the hair, but that might be because I’m a teenager. Whatever. She looks great.

  • Anonymous

Dress and makeup, good; hair and shoes, very bad. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Worst use of silly putty shoes ever. OUT!

  • Anonymous

I don’t really like the dress. The hair and make-up doesn’t bother me much. But shoes and dress … nope. OUT.

  • Anonymous

I just woke up! I’m cranky! I hate those shoes and that hair is a mess no matter what the excuse! OUT! OUT! OUT!

  • Stefanos Mantyla

    Almost forgot to vote!

This is such a fabulous dress, that to call it OUT would be a waste, even if the detailing is off, and the hair is pretty bad. I just have to vote IN, just because of the dress. It could have been a killer-IN, but as it is, just an mere IN.

  • Nah.  Tis way too baggy.  The dress looks like the Christmas wrap I wanna use this year.  OUT.

  • amanda crow

I love the dress and the makeup and am actually neutral on the shoes and hair, as opposed to livid. So I’d give her an IN.

  • Her hair offends me. She has all the money necessary to get someone to do it for her. Come on! Oh, and those shoes made me reflexively say “ew!”

  • IN! So cute!

  • Stefanos Mantyla

OUT? Seriously? I could come back to this post just to look at this dress! That is how great this dress is! It is just so easy on the eyes that I do not care about anything else, even if I maybe should. I hope people change their minds about this one.

We gave Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé an IN for similar issues, but not quite as compelling starting point, no?

  • Anonymous

OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Shoes!  Hair!  Makeup!  I can’t look another second!

  • OUT for the silly putty shoes.

  • MzzPants

Love the dress.  The hair’s a tragedy.  OUT.
