Gwen Stefani in London

Posted on October 21, 2011

There have been a dearth of famous men on the street lately. We keep scanning the wires and can’t really find anything or anyone worth talking about. Thankfully, the ladies still understand the value of a good paparazzi shot and dress accordingly.

Having said that, ooooooh, girl. We don’t quite know what to say about this getup:

We do not like all the Michael Jackson stuff going on in the lower half, but we kind of love that coat she’s wearing. Although it looks like even she’s having trouble figuring out how to keep it on. Still, we all must suffer for style, must we not? Love the fact that it’s held together with a big leather belt, even if it’s only barely held together. There’s an ’80s London feel to the top half, but that bottom half is puzzling.

In the words of the Fug Girls, this is a scrolldown fug. Hair, makeup, and coat are fab, everything from the belt down is terrible. (Why the belt?!)

      Absofuginglutely. Totally agree.

  • Sobaika Mirza

Ugh, killing me. She doesn’t look like Gwen Stefani. Looks like someone dressing as her for Halloween.

    • Sara__B

And she’s planning to switch to a Michael Jackson costume for the after party.

The bottom half looks like Portland.

  • Mariah J

I started to scroll down saying “OMG adorable…EWWWW NO” she ruined the coat with the weird pants/socks/shoes nonsense.

I like the coat, but if I owned it I would put some kind of hook or snap somewhere to keep it closed.  It appears to be a full time job to keep it on.  I never like the overprocessed peroxide hair with the red lipstick.  I think she would look prettier if she changed one or the other.

Love the coat! Maybe her ankles were cold, lol.

but its gwen.  she was intentionally doing homage to michael, right?

I wonder what the coat is supposed to look like?

  • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

That’s the way Grandma always wore her black slacks and sensible shoes. *snort*

  • Anonymous

There aren’t enough button holes in the belt apparently…its like she grabbed grandmas vintage coat (i do like the coat) a and is trying to make it fit her scrawny frame….as for the shoes and socks, having flashbacks to clockwork orange….

Is she Madonna, the guest lecturer in a course about Michael Jacksology?

  • Anonymous

Hm, I don’t know. That coat looks suspiciously like my old flannel robe tied around the middle with a belt. The way it just hangs there definitely says I’m spending the whole day on the couch eating junk food and watching crap TV.
And I really don’t understand why she’s wearing black flood pants with white socks and black loafers.
She’s Michael Jackson on the bottom and me with the flu on top.

Hobo Banker on her way to lunch and the laundry cuz she’s run out of black socks?  Or proper pants?  Horrid.

this goes to confirm my theory – true fashionistic divas do not fiddle with their clothes in public (la swinton, la blanchett, la von teese, mrs. beckham, and little gosling evan rachel).  they do their fiddling and fitting BEFORE we see them so that their camera time is all about showing us the fabulous.
(not even deigning to mention the sock situation)

  • Anonymous

Love the coat, but she needs a scarf at her neck. That (ugly) shirt that’s showing makes her look sloppy.  Sloppier.

The Michael Jackson socks and shoes are just odd. Did she do the white socks because the pants are so short but she wanted to wear loafers?  Whatever, it ain’t good.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Yeah, shoulda worn some killer boots… Love the coat too.

    • Anonymous

Oooh, yes, flat boots would have been perfect, and just as comfortable as loafers.

  • MilaXX

I think she’s trying for hipster chic like Matt Smith wears. I agree the white socks are a no. I also like the coat but overall I can’t help feeling she’s trying to hard with this look.

  • Anonymous

no. i can’t. don’t know where to start, I keep going back to the photos and still nothing. WTF?!

  • Anonymous

The coat’s obviously too big for her, but I like it anyway, one of my favorite shades of blue.

Sometimes it’s just fun to see the regular person in the celebrity ;/

  • Anonymous

Hot mess, but love those sunglasses on her!

Thanks to PR/Lifetime, all I can think of when I see her is Infallible Rouge.

  • Anonymous

I like everything about it a lot although the white socks may be a bit much. I like the coat very much, even if she doesn’t seem to know how to work it.

Something tells me Gwen Stefani is not used to dressing for chilly weather though.

  • Anonymous

Love the coat, but the white socks are an ohmygawd no.

  • Anonymous

I thought the belt was something she just kind of added for a twist, but then noticed the same belt detail at the sleeve cuff…so it must be part of the design.  Looks like the coat needs some belt loops and a button to hold it all in place (or maybe she was just lazy?)  Otherwise, I like the coat, love Gwen, hate the MJ pants, socks, shoes…

  • Anonymous

Sorry, she really needs to get that coat on properly, you know, like a coat, and not purposefully make it look like a slumpy wrinkled blousy mess that is too big for her.

  • Cathy S

The coat’s kind of great. I love the straps and buckles on the sleeves. I wonder how you keep it on though. The pants/socks thing is pretty bad though.

  • Anonymous

Love the coat and the white socks with loafers show a sense of humor (I think). My gripes are the pants (nondescript), the neckline and color of the top she’s wearing and that boring, droopy satchel. Also I’m worried about her hair. Whatever she’s doing to it, it looks like it might fall out or already is.

I dunno – she looks like an Olsen twin to me….

WOuld have loved it if the belt were cinched up higher around her waist, and tighter.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks great.  She is one of the few that can get away with look.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

The look could’ve been saved if she put her hair up and left the white socks at home.

  • Anonymous

She looks like a Southern California girl freezing in London… poor dear!!

  • Anonymous

Yeah way to dumb-down that outfit.  When I saw the top half and started scrolling, I thought she’d be wearing some killer ensemble.  She just needed some chic leggings or skinny pants and boots.  Even flat riding boots if she wanted to be cas.

  • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

ew for the whole thing. just ew.

  • Anonymous

No.No.No.  That coat looks like it is eating her.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OYMPLGS7S7467GQMKEWJDJ3N4A Deb

Maybe I’m showing my age but she looks like a homeless person who found a too large coat. If she had a shopping cart, people would be giving her money.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

Even if she just wasn’t wearing the white socks, I would be down. But no.

  • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

You really hit it on the head with the Michael Jackson thing. The coat is cool – weird, but great for Gwen – but the white socks and short black pants are fugggg.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Oooh, and that’s a bad miss.

  • Anonymous

Is she wearing someone else’s clothes? Someone who is about 20 pounds heavier and six inches shorter than she is? Oh, and honey, step AWAY from the gym socks and no one gets hurt.

  • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

hmm this is a tricky one. i mean its all a lot of fun and nice but i feel for her with that coat. its gorgeous but its kind of uncomfortable from what i can see, loose fitting, and apparantly can’t hold it on. i feel her, sometimes you do these things for fashion and are uncomfortable all day and it sucks.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Love her for always trying to branch out though, even when it fails.

  • Anonymous

I love short pants and white socks with loafers. Don’t know why, but I always have. But they are such a different vibe from that coat, which is cool in its own right.

So, I like the parts, but they don’t come together well at all.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I don’t know people. It’s working for me. I can’t even articulate why. Maybe it’s because for once she doesn’t look like Gwen Stefani. ha!

  • Anonymous

LOL! As I scanned down I thought, “Chic from the knees up. Too Michael Jackson from the knees down.” Love it when I read your minds!

  • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.eric.hill Shawn Hill

She looks like a long lost character from Harry Potter: Hermione Stranger.

  • Anonymous

White socks under slacks with loafers was not invented by Michael Jackson. It’s always been a hip take on nerd fashion, but it’s risky. I love the way she looks. She’s just friggin’ cool, and that’s all there is to it.

    • Anonymous

      I was gonna say that.

Audrey Hepburn in “Funny Face” with Astaire, Parisian nightclub dance scene – black pants, white socks, black shoes. I love her too.

The white socks are blindingly wrong, but everything else is v old time Audrey.

I think the lower half would have worked if she’d just gone without the socks.

  • http://twitter.com/hamsteaky Maria Smith

Am I alone in this? I love the whole thing! ESPECIALLY the coat, socks and shoes~

I’m with you. She’s cool, effortless and easy-chic. Love her.

and not a hot one either…

    The socks are unforgivable

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

It’s just amazing to me how she is never, EVER photographed with dark roots

  • Anonymous

Oooooo-eeeeeeee, this is bad. It’s a great coat, but it looks tortured on her.

  • Anonymous

She needs an update. The platinum hair red lip is getting old to me.

  • Anonymous

Love Gwen but not this look.

  • Carrie L. Boram

    Cute. Full stop.

  • Anonymous

Shit, that was a scrolldown fug if ever there was one. If you’re going to do exposed ankles in pants like that with masculine shoes, it can’t be with some standard pair of white Hanes socks that just look bulky and ugly. A nice pair of (printed, maybe) trouser socks would work much better imo.

Especially with, you know, the rest of the outfit being so dark.
