Cover Girl: Kristen Stewart for Glamour

Posted on October 10, 2011

So a couple of days ago we pissed off an army of Kristen Stewart fan girls on twitter because we didn’t like her spread for GQ and didn’t think the retro glam looks they styled her in really suited her looks or her personality. We will never, no matter how long we do this fabulous job, ever understand when people get offended on behalf of celebrities. Kristen Stewart didn’t shed one tear over our comments if she even heard them at all and if she did, well… she can cry herself to sleep on a pile of fur-lined bags of money, as far as we’re concerned. But we’re pretty sure she doesn’t give a shit what we think.

Anyway. We seem to have gone off on a tangent. Where we were? Oh! We also said at the time:

“If we were styling her for a shoot, we’d be much more inclined to go the jeans, natural makeup, and blown out hair look with her, but everyone seems to want to dress her up like an old Hollywood star. Don’t get us wrong; she looks very pretty in all of these shots. She just doesn’t look like herself.”

Et voila:

Kristen Stewart for Glamour Magazine

Kristen Stewart featured in the November 2011 issue of Glamour magazine photographed by Matthias Vriens-McGrath and styled by Anne Christensen. Top, Bottega Veneta. Jeans, Current Elliott. White gold and diamond necklaces, Martin Katz and Jordan Alexander at Fragments.

T Lo’s point; it is made.

Come on, she looks amazing here and she doesn’t look nearly as stiff or uncomfortable as she did when they lacquered her up in Bettie Page drag.

Kristen Stewart for Glamour Magazine

Dress, Stella McCartney. White gold and diamond bracelet, DeBeers. Boots, Ash.

Kristen Stewart for Glamour Magazine

T-shirt, Sosume. Shorts, Peter Som. Shoes, Alexander Wang.

It’s slightly more glamorous and girly on the inside, but they wisely mitigated it by pairing the dress with some boots and the lace shorts and heels with a t-shirt. This is how you style a girl like her. She should always have her makeup done this way.

Lace shorts?  They obviously had no choice but to photograph her from the side!

You’re right, though, she does look cute.

    • Anonymous

I got a good chuckle out of that one – thank you!

The makeup almost makes her look a little like Drew Barrymore in the last pic.

  • http://twitter.com/foodhussy foodhussy

That last picture is literally the first picture I have ever seen of her that didn’t make me want to punch her in the face. Good job Glamour (& TLo).

  • Anonymous

I am just happy she got a pedicure

  • Anonymous

I watched 127 Hours just to see whether James Franco is physically capable to open his eyes properly.
On day, when a suitable movie comes up, I think I’ll extend the same courtesy to Kristen Stewart.

    • Sobaika Mirza

It’s not her eyes that you have to worry about, it’s her tendency to sputter and mumble and call that ‘acting.’

But, she looks very good here. The cover is even approachable and relatable. I wish I lived a life where lace shorts were possible, practicality be damned.

      • Anonymous

Or a lace ‘dress’ that exposes your cheek.

  • http://rachbomb.livejournal.com Rachael J.

It’s scary how the K-Stew “stans” come to her “rescue” when someone criticizes how she looks.  I agree with you two about looked overly stiff in the GQ photoshoot.  She’s 20 years old, she doesn’t want to dress up in couture, she wants to wear fun clothes!

I’m not a fan of her’s, but I really like this shoot, she looks way more relaxed and at home with less make up and more casual clothes.

    • Anonymous

The Bella fan girls are like the Adam Lambert loonies.

      • http://rachbomb.livejournal.com Rachael J.

I KNOW!! I read another celebrity blog and the “Twihards” frighten me lol

    • MilaXX

I don’t care if someone stans a celeb, I’ve be a super fan a few times myself, I just wish they had a bit of self awareness about it. Simply realize that you are unable to speak rationally about a celeb.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PQUIUGKP7ZBLZJ6WAGEKXBA4TE Naddy08

And glamorous she does look! I’m really loving those lace shorts and my goodness, she has some gorgeous piercing eyes

    • Anonymous

Yes.  She looks great in the last shot too.  The last shot made me realize how very pretty she is.

  • Anonymous

As usual, T Lo is right in all things. I don’t give much thought to Ms. Stewart, but she does look great here. Very relaxed and pretty.

  • Anonymous

The sad thing is your readers have to be slightly older and they are still defending a creepy 20 something who complains about being rich and famous (boo hoo hoo. you either have privacy or money. you made the choice). She does look better in the Glamour shoot. Could also be she knew who her readers were going to be and wasn’t totally comfortable with the GQ set…

  • scottyf

    Bemused bloggers T&Lo said…
“We will never, no matter how long we do this fabulous job, ever understand when people get offended on behalf of celebrities. “

Oh, you gentlemen understand. You know that somehow, a great deal of people intertwine their own sense of self with their favorite stars. The celeb’s choices become personal. So when you ‘dis a photo spread featuring them, you are, in essence ‘dissing the fan.

It’s funny, because from the articles and interviews I’ve seen with Ms. Stewart, the thing that I admire is what seems to be a healthy perspective on fame and stardom. She appears to take it with a grain of salt–which apparently pisses a lot of people off.

    • http://profiles.google.com/pixie.applecandy Pixie Wilson

Like you said, she comes across as a healthy perspective on fame and stardom which endears me to her. Especially given that although I liked Adventureland, Twilight just frustrates me.

  • Anonymous

As a complete non fangirl of her (seriously I can’t stand her), I will admit that this is leaps and bounds better than the GQ shoot. As usual though she needs to work on facial expressions

  • http://phdoula.blogspot.com Rebecca

I’d like it better if the photoshopping wasn’t so completely obvious and intense. She looks like she’s made out of Barbie doll plastic. I’m realistic that everything is photoshopped, but can’t it at least be WELL photoshopped?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jude-Brown/1350939326 Jude Brown

She’s a pretty girl on the cover, but not sure if it’s the fault of photoshopping, or that geometric print bustier: but either make her breasts look pointy, pyramid shaped.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

The thing that bothers me more is the missing arm, poor girl, it must have been a terrible accident.

  • Anonymous

Is she still (or was she ever, really) dating that one vampire?

  • Anonymous

She actually looks pretty here. I think it is because she closed her mouth.
There is nothing attractive, however, about that lace dress. I don’t care who wears it.

    • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com Kristel

It’s got a real lace table cloth vibe. In fact, my grandmother gave me a crocheted one for Christmas a few years back, and though I couldn’t make a sleeve to mimic this dress, I probably could drape and pin it into a dress not unlike the orange number Clinique Counter showed on PR last week.

    • Anonymous

I am soooooo glad that someone had her shut her mouth!  Why do photographers insist on taking shots with the mouth hanging open!  Arrrrgh….sorry….pet peeve!

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Open mouth = sexy.  Because when straight men see a picture of a beautiful woman with an open mouth, they imagine putting their penis in it.  And if that mental visual is compelling enough, they will buy the magazine with those pictures.  Hence, the many, many magazine covers of women all gape-mouthed and vacant looking.

She looks very nice, but she’s always been a terrible actress.  Ever see the Panic Room?  She was exactly as she is now and she was what, 10 yrs old max in that movie?  Anyways, the terrible acting is perfect for her life as Bella Swan.  There couldn’t be a more perfect creature in all the land that could pull that character off, not for another million years.  From the look of her to the hilariously shitty acting, she’s perfect.  PERFECT.  One hundred thousand percent Bella.

If you love or hate twilight http://reasoningwithvampires.tumblr.com/ is a funny blog about the series from someone who has a major issue with Stephanie Meyer’s inability to write.

    • Anonymous

      THANK YOU!

Dress = hideous. Pose = possibly more so. The whole thing is, as La Nina might say, “AESTHETICALLY NOT PLEASING,” and she looks as wildly uncomfortable there as she ever has. (No small feat, that.)

I was more than a little surprised to have to scroll down this far to find the first criticism of that shot.

Agree with TLo and most others that she looks good on the cover and in the last shot–bad photoshopping notwithstanding.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I love Kristen Stewart — the kid is just so painful, I feel the urge to give her a cookie and tuck her in every time I see her.  So if you guys had said that she was a horrible person with no taste, I could understand wanting to defend her.  But as I recall, you called out the shoot stylist for doing her up in a way that didn’t suit her well.  AND you said she looked great, just not comfortable.  So what was the complaint?!?

Any way… she looks great and more like herself.  Though I think she’d rather swap that bustier on the cover for a t-shirt.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

Agreed on the bustier.  It makes her boobs look like they’re trying to take different lanes on the freeway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

Apparently they had to amputate her arm for the cover shot.

    • Anonymous

It’s ridiculous. But that cover shot has more than one anatomical unlikelihood, if not outright lie. (particularly what’s going on with her left leg position and the width of her left hip, or lack thereof — reminds me of those paper dolls/skeleton wall hangings with the hinged joints. Oh magazine photoshoppers, you live in a special visual world.)

      • Anonymous

and her right leg – I went back to look because I knew something looked off.  it looks like there took the picture of a “little person”s right leg and stuck it in the pic

  • CQAussie

If someone came up to me and said “Honey, ditch the overalls, you don’t look like yourself…..unless “yourself” wants to look like a milk maid.  Then by all means, carry on.”  I’d blush, stammer a bit then thank them for being so honest then go home and beat up the Hubs for letting me leave the house in overalls.

Because – honestly, who DOESN’T want to look like their BEST self?  Why is honesty outlawed?  Get a grip Kristen Stewart fan peeps.

  • http://profiles.google.com/rosatcollege Ros Clarke

I find it hard to see what her appeal is, but these photos are much better than the last lot.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. And those shoes in the last shot are super hot.

  • Anonymous

I like these because someone finally told her, “Hey. You there. That thing in the middle of your face is a nose. Breathe through it.”

  • Anonymous

Love the hair and makeup. She should hire whoever is responsible for this look.  Pretty!

Although kind of tragic photoshopping on the cover shot…why would they remove her arm?  Looks idiotic.  Hard to believe people get paid to do that.

  • Anonymous

Is it me, or is there some funky photoshopping going on with her legs in the first photo?

  • Anonymous

This girl is just awful, im sorry twihards but she sucks. She walks around with a puss on all the time, and as if there is a permanent smell under her nose. I guess thats her thing to look like shes a pissed off nasty cow. But from my perspective that is not what I would choose to be my “thing.”

    • christelle.marina

There are so so many pictures of her out there that i don’t even know if it’s necessary to reply to you. I mean i had big issues with this girl and her ” i am not so hollywood” attitude or her giving the middle figer to paparazzis, but it’s obvious this kid’s been making efforts lately and she’s getting better.

Sometimes i just feel like people are looking for something to criticize about her. No wonder she’s so self conscious. She’s not perfect but  that Kristen Stewart doesn’t smile thing is getting old and boring now.

  • Anonymous

She looks beautiful. I loathe the doily “dress” but at least they paired it with the chunky boots to make it fun.

    • Anonymous

Yes, I agree.  Slutty has a place.  Doilies have a place.  Slutty doilies should not have a place.

  • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

That last shot reminds me of those old Brooke Shields Calvin Klein ads.

  • Anonymous

About the prettiest I’ve ever seen her.

  • Anonymous

I’m not a fan, but this is a great layout. SO MUCH BETTER than that poseur nonsense done by GQ.

  • Anonymous

She does look beautiful here. Love the make up. It reminds of Camilla Belle’s makeup from that other post today. I hope this glowy face thing is a trend.

Who wore that lace dress recently? Sarah Jessica Parker?

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Kristen Stewart and SJP wearing the same dress is hilarious to me, but also not even remotely impossible. (I’m not making fun of you, Anathema Device. I’m making fun of SJP)

      • Anonymous

Yes! You’re right. I finally searched for it. SJP wore it lined with green and had the weird frizzed out hair and a corsage. Many people said she managed to look old and young at the same time. let’s just say it works way better here on Stewart in an editorial.

  • BerlinerNYC

It’s like everyone at Glamour was listening to TLo (or just being smart, which often amounts to the same thing). Note that the cover reads “The Real Kristen Stewart,” which is exactly what TLo was calling for her to be presented as in a layout.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

Are there actually an army of Kristen Stewart fans?

    • Anonymous

You might want to check the box office on the Twilight films.

  • Anonymous

On talk shows I have heard her whine about how unpleasant it is to be famous, so I’m thinking maybe she should stop doing these shoots.  She does look pretty here, but I think she is a very lucky young woman and she should stop complaining about the rigors of fame and just go with it.

  • Anonymous

    YES!

  • http://profiles.google.com/claudiaberry Claudia Berry

she still looks bleh but I think that’s something you can’t take off her, it’s ingrained, sadly.  but yes, much better than the retro stuff.

  • Anonymous

Definitely the best I’ve ever seen her look. Stella McCartney needs to try another career, since she apparently has peaked as a designer. Maybe something in needlework. And I have GOT to get me some of those fur-lined moneybags T Lo keeps bringing up!

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I hated that ridiculous dress  immediately, and was not surprised to learn it’s a Stella McCartney. My god, that woman has no taste.

  • Anonymous

curious …are dark bras not okay with sheer/light colored tops?  Or just for Hollywood and fashion shoots

    • Anonymous

A sheer top should have a camisole (or tank), which can match or contrast with the skin or shirt.  A light colored top should have a skin-colored bra underneath it (or as close as one can get).  A bra is underwear and is meant to do its job an unobtrusively as possible.

Ahhhh, it feels good to let my middle-aged opinions out into the light of day!  Now back to your regularly scheduled TLo. :)

  • http://twitter.com/nicolahearts nicole seligman

as much as i don’t like kstew and think she has a lot to learn about holding her face/posture, these are some of the best photos i’ve seen of her and glamour did a great job with her styling.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

    Much better.

  • http://smalldog.wordpress.com/ C.

And thus did TLo speak and thus it was done.  And TLo saw that it was good!

  • MilaXX

That shot of her in those lace shorts and t may be the prettiest she has ever looked.

  • Anonymous

She looks so young and pretty.  Ahh.

  • Presumptuous Insect

    Lovely girl.

  • Anonymous

    Gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

Normally can’t stand her, absolutely love this photoshoot. I’m curious to see her in Snow White. While I tend to dislike her on principal (because I’m secretly a rebellious 12 year old!), I really want that movie to be good. She has the attitude to be a cool tough girl actress, and I’d love her to magically develop acting abilities and make a career out of that. We’ll see…

    • jeneria

The key is “magically develop acting abilities.”  She’s a terrible actress, but then again, her boyfriend is a terrible, terrible actor.

  • Anonymous

Lovely. She looks comfortable for a change.

  • Lisa

I actually preferred her glammed up.  It looked like someone held her down and ran a brush through her hair for once!

  • Anonymous

Not a fan of the clothes, but thank goodness there was at least an attempt to photograph her in what she feels most comfortable in. It shows.  The makeup is gorgeous.  Oh, and I want her legs in my next life.

  • elzatelzabelz

She looks as good as she could. But, still…girl-emote! Smile, laugh, yell, SOMETHING.

  • Now I am The Bee

Well–she’s apparently gotten over the whole “oh dressing up for this runway/photo shoot/mag layout is SO beneath me” attitude.  And if she really did–I have to say she looks pretty here–natural and relaxed.  Much better than she’s looked in a long while.

    • Anonymous

I think she’s maturing and may well end up to be interesting and a good actress in addition to being pretty.  She seems to have a cussed independence about her that I find kind of endearing and may serve her well in Hollywood.

  • Mary McClelland

She really is a beautiful girl.

  • http://twitter.com/beatricks beatricks

I love her, and I think the cover’s wonderful — but I’m so distracted by wondering what happened to her left arm!

  • narita_rayna

best she’s ever looked. by far!

  • Anonymous

She is a gorgeous creature. She almost has Elvis genes in her facial features. Smoldering loveliness. Not a fan of her films thus far but she is a pretty picture.

  • Anonymous

TLO scores again. Righto boys. This is her look.

I liked Kstew quite a lot in the Runaways (great movie btw)  but in the Twilight series I think she is a total INSIPID BORE. Can’t tell if it’s her or the character but UGH. Spare me.

There come and get me fangirls!

  • Helen C

    She looks fresh and pretty.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Not a fan of her at all, but I have to admit that she looks good. Though I really hate the top in the cover shot… but still, she looks natural and human, which isn’t always the case. Kudos to Glamour.

  • Anonymous

“a pile of fur-lined bags of money”  Tee-hee.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She looks gorgeous.  She really does have a striking face when she wipes off that sour puss look.

  • Anonymous

I’m not a Kristen Stewart fan (haven’t seen a single Twilight movie) but I liked the UK GQ spread. You’re exactly right that she looks more herself (and therefore better) in this spread, though.

  • Anonymous

Where the hell is her arm?

  • Anonymous

See, I told you this was more up your alley. :)

I stand by my comment on the GQ post: I like that she’s trying more grown-up looks, though I don’t think the retro/Bettie Page thing is quite “her” enough to work for a red carpet style. W did better in the retro department. What I hate about this Glamour spread is the total lack of thought/creativity in the photographs. How boring it all is! The GQ spread was a mixed bag, but at least they had that great underwater shot (which could have been any random model, that was just a great photograph). This is like, minimal effort on staging. And I effing hate that Stella McCartney dress. No one can make that look good.

I wonder why no one has taken this girl down to a guitar shop and photographed her against the walls of guitars. That seems much more her speed.

  • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

She looks so much better here. I can’t imagine her wearing those crazy (but fabulous) shoes she has on in the last shot, but she’s pulling them off all the same.

She’s such a natural beauty, but she’s no Hollywood glamour girl. I actually felt bad for her in the GQ layout.

  • Anonymous

Ah yes, it’s a scary thing when fans become fanatics.

I’m not one of her fantards myself, but I happen to think she’s a gorgeous girl and you guys are right; this is the look that suits her best and it’s the one she looks more comfortable in. There are a thousand different outfits they could put her in, as long as they keep this sort of casual feel that really works for her.

  • Addicted2Glamour

I still hate that lace McCartney dress. Pairing it with combat boots, even more so.

  • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

It’s like I’m incapable of remembering that she’s actually quite pretty because her attitude is always so off putting.  Here she looks quite good though.

  • http://twitter.com/hpenfield Hannah Penfield

She still looks really uncomfortable, though. You can tell she DESPISES photo shoots.

  • Anonymous

She looks very pretty and very herself here.  I liked the glamourous stuff too, but I think non-models always come off better in looks closer to their usual image.

  • Anonymous

    Word, TLo. Word.

  • http://twitter.com/danielleRwest Danielle West

I’m very concerned about where here left arm went in the cover photo.

  • Hilary Sain

where the F is her left arm..?
