Cover Girl: Emma Watson for ELLE

Posted on October 07, 2011

Emma Watson works wildly different looks for two different Elle covers. Let’s assess.

Emma Watson for ELLE Canada
Elle Canada November 2011 Issue photographed by Tom Munro.

She, of course, looks adorable here. It would be kind of hard for her not to look adorable. And while we salute Elle Canada for a black and white cover, we’re finding ourselves a bit underwhelmed with the look. It’s just so expected at this point to do her up in mid-sixties-style dolly bird drag. Yes, it suits her, but it’s also been done to death with her.

Now, early ’70s, glam rock, THAT’S inspired. J’ADORE. Bravo to Elle UK for going that route. LOVE the insane boots.

She looks STUNNING in the Elle UK. So refreshing – and probably a good idea since she’ll be in Perks of Being a Wallflower. She’ll have a totally different look than the usually Twiggy-lite.

  • Molly OBM

On that UK cover alone, I’m going to have to buy the issue!

  • fafafab

    Hermione forever, I L-O-V-E you

  • Anonymous

    Love ’em both.

  • Shopgrrl81

I like the Canada cover better. I don’t believe her as “glam rock” at all. She just doesn’t have any edge to her.

  • Anonymous

I like the boots and the look.  I don’t care for the pose.  If you are going to pose like that, why are you in a…skirt?  I think she’s got a skirt on and not just a long top.  And I love her hair here.

  • Laura Schultz

Oh darn. Was hoping there were more pics from that second look. I think she looks adorbs in both pics.

  • Jgar

That second cover is the first “edgy” look she’s tried that really suits her. She looks great.

  • Chrissy Barney

The Elle Canada cover is kind of hilarious, if only for the “Grown Up & Gorgeous!” tagline next to the shot of her looking like she’s 12. The Elle UK- hmm. For some reason, she kind of reminds me of a Muppet there. A fabulous, glamorous Muppet- maybe the vibes of Janice and Miss Piggy, combined.

  • Anonymous

I like them both, but she does look really young in the black & white shot. I love her strong brows in that second shot. Is that weird? To notice eyebrows?

    • Sobaika Mirza

They’re the first things I noticed too. They seem very Brooke Shields.

      • Anonymous

You’re right! I LOVED Brooke Shields in high school. She made life better for me back then because I was a tall skinny brunette with really strong brows in a sea of Farrah Fawcett wannabes.

        • Anonymous

          Me too!!!  :)

  • Anonymous

Hmm, the angle of the collar-hitting hair and the eyelashes on the UK cover reminds me a bit too much of Sally Bowles.  But you WERQ those boots, girl!

    • Sobaika Mirza

That’s why it worked for me! I love the Cabaret look, I guess it’s my inner Queen.

    • Anonymous

Her lower lashes in particular are bothering me in the UK cover.  I can’t stop staring at them.

  • Anonymous

She’s got a very masculine edge to her in the UK cover, sort of Bowie-esque. I need to warm up to it a little but I totally respect that they’re going for something different with her for once.

  • Tanya Wade

The UK cover is oh-so Toni Collette in Velvet Goldmine. And that’s a great thing.

  • Lisa

Something about that second cover reminds me of a very early Isabella Rossellini from her modeling days.  First one is pure Jean Seberg.

  • Anonymous

She really is cute.  I especially like her with her hair a little spiky like in the second picture.

  • narita_rayna

    omg i need those boots

  • Anonymous

I”m getting a young Meg Ryan in cover #2. Only with cooler clothes than Meg was allowed to wear.

  • Wrenaria

    I love her. So cute.

  • Anonymous

HOLY SMOKES!  I love the UK cover!  LOVE LOVE LOVE!

  • Anonymous

Anyone else think her right arm (the one on the left from our perspective) looks really weirdly photoshopped in the Elle UK photo? It looks so small. Or am I just seeing things?

    • Ellen Cheeseman-Meyer

I see it too.  She has no elbow, her hand is elongated (I think they tried to stick her wrist where her elbow actually was) and her fingers are weirdly shortened.  It’s a PsD.

      • Sara Munoz

        Oh, WOW. That is HEINOUS.

        • Lisa

Wow, that is a bad photoshop job!

  • Anonymous

Oh she’s so pretty … ::sigh::

  • kvlm

Like them both but…..the Canada makes her look a lot younger than she is and the UK position makes her leg look…odd?  Different posing on both.

  • R. L.

Why did the giant caterpillar eyebrows come back.  I don’t know any woman who wants to have to brush her eyebrows out of the way to see,

  • Anonymous

I don’t like her facial expression on the UK cover, but both covers are cool. I want that sweater on the Canadian cover.

  • Suzie Vazquez

Her BROTHER is a model and he looks exactly like her. It’s kind of terrifying.

  • Anonymous

I want her boots.  Want.  Want Want.  I think she is lovely and I love this cover, sixties vibe and all.

  • MilaXX

I think she looks gorge on both pictures, but I like the second because it is a different look for her.

  • { edi } ilovetrash

i can buy one very expensive thing at the beginning of the year–one–unless crazy semi-estranged spouse actually makes some huge money {hmmmm…..} –it’s the only one i can buy all year–i was gonna buy the red rubber vuittons but, holiest of smokiest, i could buy these instead if i knew who made them. they tug at my heart.

    • D J

Pollini For Louise Gray. I believe it’s Spring 2012 collection, though, and isn’t available for purchase yet.

        T H A N K  Y O U
        those things are amazing!

You WERQ that Velvet Goldmine shit, Hermione Granger!

  • Anonymous

The top cover is the first time I’ve ever even remotely understood why anyone finds her looks appealing or fashionable. There, I said it. I know, I’m a surly Neanderthal.

  • Anonymous

I’m amused by the look she is wearing on the top cover with the headline “Grown up & Gorgeous”.  She looks like she is 12.  2nd cover – awesome.

  • Geno Boggiatto

You nailed it, TLo! The first is adorable, but the second is inspired!

  • bookish

    She is so damn cute.

  • Anonymous

I think both covers are great.  And at this stage in her career, she should be branching out and trying out different looks so she doesn’t stay pigeonholed as Hermione.

  • Christopher

She’s freaking adorable,  can’t wait til she gets her own movie.

  • Anonymous

She looks great in the UK Elle. The Canadian Elle seems to me that they took an older picture of her, because I think she’s growing out that cut.

  • Mary McClelland

Both rate a meh from me. The second cover something is off with her face.

  • Anonymous

Are we still casting imaginary Hollywood biopics?  Because I nominate Emma for the title role in “The Twiggy Story”.

    • Anonymous

I’m sure she’ll be duking it out with Carey Mulligan for those 60’s-retro girl roles.

  • Anonymous

Getting a Helena Bonham Carter face on the second one. Shes just smashing this one. Love this kid.

  • Anonymous

sorry to be a downer but she kinda looks like she OD’ed on the UK cover…

  • Anonymous

I have a tranny friend I would LOVE to see in those boots.

  • elzatelzabelz

I really like the UK version. Everyone has done the Twiggy thing with her before; it’s getting a little old. Those boots are INSANE.

  • Anonymous

    Love both of them!

I wish she would grow her hair back. I tried so hard to like her short cut, and I just don’t like it. But I do like the first cover.

  • Juu

I only liked the second picture for about 20 seconds, now when I continue looking at it I start too feel kind of sick, because her legs and her body don’t fit at all. obviouly the perspective and the pose are a little hard… but seriously, it must been very badly photoshopped.
I really liked the colors and her face though… but now I can never look at it again :/

  • MajorBedhead

She’s adorable in both but I like the Twiggy look better, to be honest. The UK one looks a bit too contrived.

  • Anonymous

She looks like a little girl.  An adorable little girl, but this is for Elle, not Seventeen.  And yes, I realize she is far older than she looks, but since she has such a young look, I feel like she’s part of the recurring editorial trend toward very young models.

  • shorty j

As a short-haired girl, I now have a dilemma: which of these pictures do I take to my stylist next time I get a haircut?

also, bonus points for anyone who styles a shoot with a short-haired lady and doesn’t dress her up like Twiggy. Love that second cover. Let’s face it, most of us end up looking more like David Bowie than Mia Farrow anyway 😛

Every single headline on the right-hand side of the Elle Canada cover is LOL funny.  I want a job coming up with gems like that!

  • D. Robinson

I think Ms. Emma Watson looks fantastic.

Between her, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint I’m amazed that those “Harry Potter” kids have grown up to become such fine young adult actors. Rupert Grint (IMO) looks like a cross betweeen Damien Lewis and Kevin McKidd and Daniel looks like a young version of Richard Armitage.
