WERQ: Nina Dobrev in Donna Karan

Posted on September 19, 2011

We have one more set of Emmys red carpet looks to run down, but we wanted to single out one gal for being the Look of the Night.

Honey, in an endless sea of tight red dresses, you somehow found that one tight red dress that blew all the other tight red dresses out of the water and in the process got yourself all trended up on the twitter and all over the internet the next morning. Mission accomplished. You WERQ that career-making dress, girl!

I like it, think it’s flattering and fits her like a dream but I wouldn’t say this beats ERW’s look.  Too fussy on the bottom.

    • Anonymous

In fairness to Tlo’s comment concerning the above dress, ERW was not sporting a tight red dress but a faboo black one

      • Anonymous

The post says TLo is singling her out as Look of the Night, not just red dress Look of the Night, that’s where my reply is coming from.

        • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

ERW has already established herself as glamorous and a fashion icon, and yes, her black dress was fabulous and stunning. But Nina definitely deserves credit for being able to stand out in a red dress among a sea of red dresses.

  • Kim Sheehan

She reminds me of the actress who plays Sloane on Entourage.
My question is: where does all that ‘look’ at the bottom (ruffles trains etc) go when you sit down in the audience? If you’re sitting next to one of these women, do you have a place to put your feet?

    • Anonymous

I thought that was the actress that played Sloan! I didn’t realize it wasn’t until you wrote that.

    • Margo Anderson

You pick the train up in the back and pull it to one side, then sit down.  If you have room, you arrange it prettily on the floor around your feet.  In theater seating, you drape it across your lap like a blanket.

    • Rand Ortega

That’s who I thought it was, Kim. They could be twins!

    • King Dex

She reminds me of a young Victoria Principal (Pam on the original Dallas TV series).

Am I a failed newborn fawn if I think the black version is more striking? :x  That said, she does look great.

    • Anonymous

I think with all of that detail, she (or her stylist) probably realized that red would photograph better. Plus, the red works beautifully with her coloring. :-)

      • Anonymous

Both of those things are true, fellow library lady!

      • Anonymous

I agree.  The black is pretty, but the red really pops and it really shows the detailing of the skirt better.

That diamond choker was an inspired choice to go with that dress.

    • Anonymous

I totally agree, it’s a gorgeous necklace and it’s even more gorgeous with the dress.

Speaking of gorgeous… TLo, you should have included pics of her with Ian Somerhalder. Now THERE’S two people who need to procreate STAT.

  • http://jessieliz.wordpress.com/ Super Red

she looks stunning. This is a dress that so easily could wear the girl, and she is rocki… excuse me, WERQing it!

Good on her! I think the bust is riding a liiiiitle low, but that’s my only complaint. Fits her like a glove.

  • Anonymous

looks way better on nina than it does on the runway model.

    • Sobaika Mirza

Indeed. This is one of the dresses you need more of a body (as opposed to a model-thin lady) to make sing.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_C65IT4K6RYN4TWRMFJOI3VUDAI Olechka Milashka

    LUV!

  • Sobaika Mirza

She looked stunning – although she could definitely learn to give a better interview. And I’m not sure it was the look of the night.

  • Anonymous

is there anything else to say? after this we’ll know who she is

    • Anonymous

Those of us who are unashamed to watch the Vampire Diaries already know who she is – maybe by looking so hot she’s made more people want to tune in.  I freaking love that show.

I feel like Winona Ryder in Reality Bites: “Melrose Place is a really good show!”

      • Tabatha Spencer

She’s fabulous on The Vampire Diaries.  Not everyone can pull of playing one single character let alone a character, her evil doppleganger, and her evil doppleganger’s civil-war-era-flashback self.  The Vampire Diaries is crazy awesome.

      • Anonymous

That show is totally underrated, just like Miss Dobrev. She’s freaking fantastic, and she does dual roles. Way more than just a ridiculously gorgeous face. I am utterly unashamed to be a total TVD fan (almost abbreviated it VD… I’m not such a fan of that. That’s an unfortunate acronym).

      • Anonymous

If you want to get into guilty pleasure TV, I remember her from Degrassi: TNG. Won’t say I’m unashamed about that though.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1445460261 Courtney Bolt

Vampire Diaries is awesome! I’ve spent the last weekend catching up on the end of season two and starting the new season, and I’m as obsessed as ever. It has been incredible from the second episode, and it hasn’t faltered since. (The first episode was a little much with the raven and the smoke.)

And Nina is incredible as both Katherine and Elena. I never have a problem telling the difference between them, even when they have their hair done in a similar way. She just knows how to embody both characters so well.

      • Violet Flame

I remember her joyfully bounding into Jimmy Fallon’s delicious opening skit in last year’s Emmys!

  • Anonymous

I have no idea who this woman is, but I think she just had her Elizabeth Hurley Moment last night.

    –GothamTomato

    • http://www.gregmce.com Greg McE

I only learned who she was this time last year because of the opening number for the Emmys (she leaps in right after Hurley from Lost shows up); she’s the female lead from Vampire Diaries.

  • Anonymous

She does look fabulous. The fit is incredible and that shade of red is beautiful. This is dress walks right up to but doesn’t cross any line that would doom it: it could have been too tight, too booby, too fussy at the bottom… But it pulls back from the edge just enough to look very elegant and striking.

  • Anonymous

    Damn, girl.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.eric.hill Shawn Hill

    I love you Elena!

  • Anonymous

Werqing it?  Yes.  Look of the night?  No.  I hate the bottom of this dress but she is making it werq for sure.

    • Anonymous

Totally agree. Gotta go with Evan Rachel as my Look of the Night.

  • Anonymous

Sorry, but that hem is a disaster.

    • Anonymous

Who’s even looking at the hem?

  • Anonymous

I’m going to go with Martha Plimpton as Best Red(dish) Dress of the Night, actually. This looks like a carefully structured tablecloth with matching napkins ’round the hem. It is eye-catching, though.

    • Anonymous

I’m with you on that one!!

        YES! MP looked amaaaaaazing

    • Anonymous

I’m with you on that one!!

  • Anonymous

I’m getting really strong Eva Longoria vibes from this, and I can’t stand Eva Longoria.

  • Anonymous

That is beautiful. The hair over one shoulder even WERQs.

  • Anonymous

Seriously? From the knees down, there are about six additional garments clinging to her for dear life and not letting go. It’s the evening gown equivalent of having toilet paper stuck to the bottom of your shoe. Surely, I cannot be the only person looking at this from head to toe and thinking to himself, “Nice…pretty…wait…WHAT THE WHAT.” C’mon people, the empress has a little too much clothes.

    • Anonymous

Completely agree about the dress, too much, too heavy at the bottom.  However, she is working it to her advantage by looking effortless in pulling it all around behind her.  Total package her is the thing, individual elements are lacking.

    • Anonymous

You’re not alone, I think from the knees up she looks fine, though not earth-shatteringly stunning or anything. But that hem is ATROCIOUS. It looks like it’s made out of bedsheets & foam rubber. Really, really awful.

  • Anonymous

I thought this was Sloane from Entourage so was totally prepared to hate irrationally.  But since this isn’t that actress, she looks beautiful!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

Beautiful, but she’s no Martha Plimpton. Can I get an Amen?

It is stunning, but I still don’t know who she is, and Hugh Grant isn’t her boyfriend, so there!  LOL  My looks of the night were Sophia’s tangerine dream, Martha Plimpton’s ruby red number, and Evan Rachel Wood in black.

    • Sobaika Mirza

Ian Somerhalder is her boyfriend. Not bad either!

The dress is gorgeous – but her slamming body is what makes this WERQ – the model looks nice but nowhere near as good

(I think this one is better than ERW’s – I thought the fabric was doing most of the work there, strapless straight across the top and a train – but in a fab fabric)

There’s way too much going on at the bottom of that dress, but she does look really good. (And thank you to the minion who identified who she is because I didn’t have a clue.) I’d love to know what the textile is; it really drapes beautifully and it’s a gorgeous red shade. Still, my look of the night is probably ERW. Glam, Bam and thank you Ma’am.

I’m impressed by the fabric too.  It seems to have traveled well.  If it had lost its draping or ended up wrinkled, it would have ruined the effect.  It looks like a heavy fabric. Honestly, I’ve often thought that they need to invent some sort of horse trailer/limousine that could transport these ladies through the streets in their gowns .)

just wanted to say –  I think because we’re bitter kittens and we’re so used to picking apart the individual design elements of a gown – we’re missing an important point here.  is the dress perfect? maybe not (although some of us might think so.) Were some looks more gorgeous or “interesting”?  perhaps.  but in terms of getting noticed, stopping traffic and bumping up your profile, especially in a sea of TV people, for god’s sake…try going into Google today and entering her name and seeing what it suggests.  You’ll get “emmys 2011″ right after it.  Martha Plimpton? EWR? Let’s just say…you won’t.  So in that context at least, Ms. Elena WERQed it so hard last night she must be sore this morning.

    • Sobaika Mirza

That’s true – she had a red carpet ‘moment’ especially for the people who think Vampire Diaries are Twilight journals sold for preteens.

  • Anonymous

I have a sincere question because I have no idea how all this works: are the stylists selling these celebrities on red dresses by saying “it’s the look of the season” and then they all decide to wear it because everyone else is wearing it? Or are they somehow not aware that everyone’s wearing red this year?  Because I would think it would be a stylists job to make sure the client isn’t wearing the same look as everyone else.  But maybe that’s naive non-Hollywood thinking.  Or maybe each woman thinks she’s gonna be the one who gets the “she wore the red dress best” vote by the fashion bloggers.

  • Anonymous

Wow, she really did look amazing. I only saw the last 20 minutes of red carpet coverage and don’t remember seeing her at all last night but she looks great. Gotta say, though, I think Martha Plimpton looked even better.

  • Anonymous

Yes!! She is sush a gorgeous girl! And my jaw just dropped when I saw her in this, she just got everything so right. This is how you make it WERQ!

She does look great in a dress that, IMHO, has a little too much structure going on at the bottom.  It looks very, very heavy down there.  ut it fits her perfectly and hair?make up are spot on.

  • http://twitter.com/vesperbeauty Vesper Beauty

What is that dark line around her thighs, visible in the first and fourth picture? Is she wearing a black corset or something? It’s too definite of a color change to be just the material of the dress.

  • Robyn Morelli

Damn, she looks better than the model in this!

  • Anonymous

Yes, this is a definite look of the night, but I’m still waiting to see a Martha Plimpton post that everyone’s raging about. I don’t watch Vampire Diaries, but was and still am a Degrassi fan and remember her as Mia Jones. My how she has grown up! She’s absolutley gorgeous and has an amazing body. Definitely a WERQ moment.

    • Anonymous

Martha Plimpton was the winner imho. She got every single detail right, and the dress was beyond spectacular.

    • Victoria Sharoyan

I coincidentally just turned on the TV and caught an early Mia scene on Degrassi just as I opened up this post. She sure has grown up. :)

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

    Spce-effing-tacular.

    I’m done sayin’

  • Susan Crawford

I’m not sure who she is (I’ll Google her ASAP), but she DOES look awesome in this dress. My only teeny, little, nagging critique is that I like this dress in black so much more than red. I wonder if she would have made it to the T Lo WERQ category had she worn the black version? Probably not, since the detailwork on the design probably wouldn’t have shown up as well, and let’s face it, red is not only an “in” color right now, it is the color that she was born to wear.

The styling is perfection, too: love the necklace and clutch, and her hair and make-up are immaculately done. (And one advantage of a dress with this kind of skirt? She could be wearing Sperry Topsiders underneath and no-one will see them!) As for the underpinnings – yes, it probably is some sort of body shaping garment that the harsh lighting picked up.

All in all, this look was dynamite, bit I still have Ms. Va-Va-Vergara as my Number 1 for the night!

  • http://tracismixedbag.com tracismixedbag

Although I thought Nina Dobrev looked AMAZING, she has a perfect body and usually inexperienced girls her age get it wrong (even with the great body) but I voted for Kate Winslet on yahoo’s poll. We older girls have to stick together.

    • Anonymous

As gorgeous as Kate is, I can’t vote for her until she starts wearing clothes that fit her.

      • Anonymous

I’m with you. Maybe she isn’t worried about her seams splitting, but I certainly am!

      • http://tracismixedbag.com tracismixedbag

I know, I also read T&L’s comment about it. I guess my untrained fashion eye is a little more sentimental than keen.  McAudrey and Inforapenny thanks for commenting in response, it’s my first comment here.

  • http://twitter.com/A_SmallFry AC

I think she and ERW KILLED it. They both looked amazing.

  • Anonymous

Not the “Dress Of The Night” for my money, and I don’t like what her make-up queen did to her face with the contouring overkill, but it is pretty fucking killer all the same.

But I still have no idea who she is or any real desire to find out, so…I don’t know. I have to wonder if in terms of the “Who the hell is that? I’m going to google her ass right now” factor, Batshit Crazy de la Huerta doesn’t come out ahead.

  • http://twitter.com/kathryn_dc Kathryn Dudley

I thought you hated one-sided hair?

  • Anonymous

I’m surpirsed that this is Donna Karan.

  • Anonymous

I agree, this was a jaw-droppingly fantastic look.  Fit her to perfection, worked with her coloring so well and made her the red dress that put the others to absolute shame.

  • http://twitter.com/HeckYeahHeckNo K

I like it, she looks FIERCE. I don’t mind the flippery at the bottom THAT much, though it does look like napkins. I don’t see fussy, it isn’t precious enough to be fussy. The one in black looks more structured at the bottom, which I like. What happened with the red one?

I went on a site that said she was the worst dress and that Lea Michele’s dress was the best of the red and I blacked out for an hour. Like…c’mon guys! ITA agree with Tlo about Nina’s being the best of the red though I’m fond of Kate’s even if it is a bit blah for her.

  • Anonymous

She looks great, but watching her try to get up the little step to the E! 360 runway during the pre-game show was scary.

  • Anonymous

This was the one look trending on twitter?  Not seeing it.

Potentially great dress in theory, and everything’s fine from the hips ups.  But those napkins are far too heavy – look how they’re pulling at the skirt.  And the horizontal strip at the bottom is all kinds of puckered and home-sewn.

A for effort, C- for execution.

  • Grace Ritt

I didn’t think it was going to be so amazing but the bottom of the dress just makes it perfection. Also, the make-up is flawless. She deserves a WERQ!

  • http://twitter.com/danielleRwest Danielle West

the bottom of the dress takes away from the overall look for me.  I think she looks amazing, until you get to the bottom.  I can see where the bottom would be okay in black because it wouldn’t be so obvious.  But in the red, it’s too choppy.

    • Judy_J

I agree.  The black is so much more elegant.

Oh Great Holy Mary Mother of God. Enough with the one-sided hairstyle. Other than that, WERQ indeed.

Is it me or could Nina Dobrev & Emmanuelle Chriqui pass for twins?

    • Anonymous

Definitely. And I want in on that gene pool!

  • Anonymous

For me, the clincher in this – other than dead-on makeup and styling – is that this woman, with this “slammin’ bod” actually knows how to stand up straight and wear the damn garment. (And when can we move on from “slammin’ bod”, which makes us all sound like rejects from the “Superbad” casting call???)

    • Anonymous

You could start by not using the phrase “slammin’ bod”….

It just doesn’t get any redder or any better than this. Fabulous.

  • Anonymous

She looks like a very well-dressed Russian mail-order bride/trophy wife. The necklace is pretty, but it’s still a choker, which always reads a bit cheap to me. If Salma Hayek or the widow Longoria or even Penelope Cruz came out in this I have a feeling no one would be raving over it, which leads me to believe that the dress itself is not amazing, she is just an amazingly lovely girl wearing a showy dress.

  • Anonymous

She’s come a long way from Mia from Degrassi. Looks lovely.

  • Anonymous

Totally agree. When I saw this I got a flashback to Jennifer Lawrence’s (far more simple) red dress at the Oscars that put her on the map. In both of these cases, I see casting directors picking up phones and screaming “I want her in my next project!” It’s a game-changer.

  • Anonymous

It fits her perfect she looks great, blah, blah, blah I’m bored. Seriously, we’re congratulating her for being able to dress her stellar bod? Red mermaid dresses just don’t do it for me.

  • Marie Drucker

Dinner napkins at the bottom and an extra one on top. What is that piece of fabric doing across her bust?

  • Anonymous

She is in second place right behind Evan, but completely agree that this is a career-making dress and she looks fantastic – have no idea who she is, though!

  • Anonymous

She looks SMOKIN’ and I actually love what’s going on on the hem (and I’m usually quite averse to a dramatic mermaid dress). Full on WERQ fo’ sho’.

  • Anonymous

I looked at so many red dresses on the interwebs last night and stopped dead in my cyber-tracks when this one appeared. WERQ is right. Don’t know who she is, but the appearance is a spectacular success. I don’t love the dress or the necklace but this is fitted, styled and worn perfectly.

  • Anonymous

Stunning dress. Lovely lady. I like it in the red more because the details stand out better. It’s also nice to see someone wear a necklace at all, much less a very appropriate and flattering one with a strapless neckline. J’adore the fabu clutch. She has great posture and posing too. This is indeed a WERQ.

  • Anonymous

She looks fabulous, and I think that’s the point, right?

Because the bottom of the dress isn’t outstanding from my POV, it’s a great proportion, but then you focus on it and it looks a bit too much like a tree skirt gone wrong. A tree skirt made from marked down table linens.

LOVE IT.  Wow, that looks really good on her.  But I’d really like to see Christina Hendricks in this, adjusted for her ample boobage though.  It’d be 1,000,000% Jessica Rabbit but in an awesome way.

Plimpton’s was a bigger accomplishment to me. This chick would look like a million in a t-shirt.

I wonder if anyone else caught Nina Garcia on that Joan Rivers Red Carpet show.

Nina was there for only a short time.  I was interested to see that she was in favor of Paltrow’s dress/outfit and also that she agreed with TLo on that brown ombre dress as well as the two blue dresses — one on Kateie Holmes and the other on that young blond woman.   Nina said it was matronly.

I would definitely take Ian Somerhalder over Hugh Grant. She wins.

The main actress in the surprisingly fantastic Vampire Diaries. She plays the main character Elena and her (awesome) evil doppleganger Katherine.

It’s probably my own personal prejudices at work, but I loathe mermaid dresses and this is no exception. There is too much crap going on at the hem, which completely distracts from every other aspect of her. Terrible.

This dress ages her badly. And I also thought she was the girl from Entourage.
