WERQ: Lea Michele in J. Mendel

Posted on September 14, 2011

Lea usually poses all the time looking like her inner monologue is something along the lines of, well… “WERQ it, girl!” Still, despite the fact that she looks like she’s congratulating herself all the time, we feel the need to concur just this once.

Lea Michele in J. Mendel Lea Michele attends the “FOX Fall Eco-Casino Party” in Culver City, California in a J. Mendel gown.

We’d probably bitch at just about anyone else for wearing that color, but it really works well with her tan and her dark eyes and hair. Even the semi-matchy shoes work. And we’re happy to see a starlet wearing the correct kind of shoe with a gown. There’s an epidemic of platforms underneath the skirts of Hollywood and we are never going to think that kind of pairing works. These sleek pointy-toed suede pumps are just what the bitchy fashion bloggers ordered. Love the sexy back, although a more demure neckline probably would have worked better with it. Overall, she looks chic, dead-sexy and head-turning all at the same time. You WERQ that tone-on-tone, girl.

Agreed, I think she looks perfect here.

Yeah, looks so much better on Lea than on the emaciated clothes hanger.

    • Anonymous

I agree, she looks good here; but that girl likes herself way too much, and that is going to lead to disappointment down the road.  And in that last picture, is she standing on the hem of her dress?

      • Anonymous

Yes, and the stiletto is about to shred it to pieces!

    • aimee_parrott

Now THAT’S a WERQ.  She looks fantastic!

    • http://fafafab.tumblr.com/ fafafab

I LOVE her, but I just wish she would get over the bangs

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I don’t mind the bangs too much, although they make her look like a school girl. Considering she plays one, they’re OK for now. But she should probably get rid of them once she leaves the show unless she wants to continue being cast as a high-schooler.

        • http://fafafab.tumblr.com/ fafafab

now that you say it, maybe they asked to keep the bangs for that reason, to make her look like a highschooler

          • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Yes, that’s what I was thinking. I mean, she might like the bangs, and I don’t have a problem with bangs in general, but I think it’s entirely possible that she keeps them primarily because of the show.

          • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

The bangs do a great job of covering up the annoying things her eyebrows do when she sings and over emotes.

    • Anonymous

may be the best I’ve seen her look.

But WTH is with this ”
      Eco-Casino”???

People playing cards by beeswax candle-light? with the food grown on the “casino” grounds?

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

My question exactly. Cynic that I am, I doubt there was much of anything “green” going on.

        Agreed.

That is a gorgeous dress and it looks great on her.  Love the shoes as well.  But my favorite part here is she doesn’t have that smug “I should be a HUGE star” look on her face she quite often does.  She looks very comfortable, happy and at ease.  That is a good look….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=816120314 Chason Dailey

She is looking rather skinny. Maybe they are priming her Glee character to eat one of her costars. It would actually be a plausible character move, and it would thin the bloated cast list.

      • Jenna Gordon

the whole appeal of her character on glee was that she didn’t look like a cookie-cutter teen that is so popular in the t.v./movie business. she was always attractive but she actually had some character and a realistic body. now she has been carved down to a trendy stick like the others. very disappointing.

    • Sobaika Mirza

Lea, stop trying to make sexy happen. It’s not going to happen.

      But yeah, she looks good.

    • Dee

Excuse you, Lea Michelle. That’s what I’m talking about.

      *snap*

Agreed.  And I hate taupe.  I guess I like darker tones of it when worn with a skin tone that works with it.  Also happy to see that she is not wearing the peep-toe boots that were shown on the runway.

I love taupe walls.  A light to medium taupe wall with white trim,  Gorge

This Weimaraner color doesn’t work on a lot of people, but if you are one of the lucky ones it works for, it is gorgeous. She looks terrific!

I wish the Weimaraner look worked on me!  I love that color, that dog, and your comment for invoking both!

I don’t like the droopiness or the hemline, but I LOVE the color on her and and the beading and I think those shoes are perfect, even though I usually hate suede shoes.

      • Anonymous

oh, you hate suede shoes?  I covet them.  I hardly ever buy them because they get so beat up so quickly, but I covet them.  yummy yummy suede

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I’m with you on the suede.  I love it, but I can’t justify the price for something I know I’m going to destroy in short order.

    • Anonymous

If my girls would pay attention like that, I’d wear that kind of neckline everywhere. There are like five years when you can do it, I say WERQ ‘em girl!!

    • Anonymous

Isn’t the dress much too long for her?

      • Anonymous

Probably because it’s a sample, and has to go back to the designer after she wears it.

    • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

Like many, I don’t like her at all, but she looks fantastic here. That dress is beautiful.

    • Judy_J

Wish the neckline didn’t plunge to the waistline, but she does look great in that color.

      • Anonymous

I bet it’s hard to put on, trying to distinguish the front plunge from the back one!

        Great dress, great look.

    • Anonymous

Good Lord. What are those…THINGS…on the model’s feet in the runway shot?! Even platform pumps would have been 500% better by comparison.

      • Now I am The Bee

Gee–I really like the boots on the model.  They give this ethereal dress a good shot of edge.  I kinda wish ML would have gone with the boots, but I do love her shoes.

She looks fantastic. This is a tough color to pull off, but she’s doing it.

Unlike a lot of people, I think she’s sexy. She just usually tries too hard to sell it. She’s not trying here. She’s just WERQin’ it.

      Good for you, Miss Lea.

    • Anonymous

Something about the combination of her standing on her dress and the sheen on her foot tattoo says volumes to me. I’m not sure what, but it says something.

    • Ruth Gottesman

Obviously in the minority, but I don’t think that color is doing a single thing for her. It’s a pretty gown, but a different color on her would be better.

    • Anonymous

Definite WERQ.  Not sold on the velvet texture of the shoes, but that’s a minor complaint.  Glad she didn’t ruin this great look with her typical divalicious posing.

I just want to know how to make my hair look like that. It’s gorgeous! I have the same cute, same color, same thickness…yet mine just looks sort of long and sad most of the time. :/

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Blow it straight (or flat iron).  Curl the ends with a big barrel curling iron in different directions, rolling the barrel up to the root and back down again.  Then (and this is the tough part) place the same iron on your roots with the barrel under the direction the hair will lie, with hairspray if possible (sometimes it weighs down hair) — I like Redken w8less.  Flip your head upside down and shake vigorously with your fingers breaking up any chunks of hair.  Spray ends LIGHTLY with hairspray to hold and finger comb any bits that are out of place.  If you have bangs as well, use a flat iron to curl them under rather than the curling iron, which will just give you mall bangs, and no one wants that:)

I’ve had the same hair for years:)

uh, tired of that fake smile

    • Zubair Ghumro

I disagree, I think that dress is too big for her. The dress looks like embellished curtains hanging on teen boyish frame.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

On the model it looks like a mullet-hem.  It is better on her since it is longer it looks more like a gown with a small train.

The shoes look a bit too big for her feet but at least they aren’t platforms.  What ever happened to a delicate sandle with a gown?

      • Anonymous

I keep wondering about sandals too. Didn’t they used to be de rigeur with a long dress? I blame the nude platform pump. Which  probably is also to blame for the platform shoes currently being paired with gowns.

That heel.. that chiffon.. I’m cringing.. Step off the dress. Yikes!  I’m not crazy for this. Too open on her in the front.

    • BuffaloBarbara

She looks great.., but I hope that dress isn’t a loaner, because it looks like the heel is putting a hole in it even as the pictures are being snapped!

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Occupational hazard. The designers have GOT to be used to it by now!

    • Anonymous

WERQ indeed! Fabulous dress and she is totally rockin’ it. I’m ridiculously tickled she has a tan line. It’s like the last vestiges of normalcy on a girl that seemed to have gone Hollywood way too quickly.

    • Anonymous

Neckline is messy and so is her hair. Bang clumps?  I don’t like pale suede shoes with darker chiffon, or maybe I just don’t like the color of the shoes. Pretty dress though. I prefer a delicate sandal as well.

    • Anonymous

Isn’t she rather on the petite side?

      • Anonymous

        Yes?

        • Anonymous

I ask because she looks like she’s swimming in the gown.

      • Anonymous

        Yes?

    • Anonymous

Very pretty.  I bet the hem had a hole in it by the time the night was over, though.

And can someone explain what an Eco-Casino is?  Roulette wheels that run on flatulence?

    • Sara__B

The dress is rather large for wee little Lea, but she’s looking lovely. (I, too, would prefer a more demure, and therefore more elegant, neckline, but I quibble. I remember when I liked to flaunt the goods, too.)

    • Anonymous

Agree with the color and styling, but IMO, I think the proportion is a bit off due to her height.  The bodice seems to droop more and the length seems too long when compared to the runway look.  Perhaps it is because of her petite stature…and boobies.

    • Anonymous

she looks great!  however, i have two beefs.  that tan line on her back and i’m so sick of flat chested women getting to parade around with their boobs hanging out and not being considered pornographic.

    • Anonymous

Sweetie, they’re called blotting papers.  Please look into them.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Again, fulfills my requirement of a WERQ- looking better than the model. About 100x better.

    • Now I am The Bee

Dress and shoes are stunning.  Hair is good, too.  But with the lips, cheeks and teeth, my eyes are bit blinded.   All the shine makes me squint.

    • Anonymous

she looks just like a milk chocolate bon-bon.  yum!  but with the front and the back both cut to the waist, what keeps the shoulders from falling off and revealing all her charms?  the shoes are perfect, but i’m a little afraid she’ll catch a heel in her hem-she’s standing on the dress in at least one picture.  and who thought it would be a good idea for the runway model to wear peep toe boots?  when are peep toe boots ever a good idea?

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

        Tape.

    • Anonymous

The dress is too big for her, but it’s so gorgeous. I hate the shoes.

Why is she so shiny? Why is everyone so shiny these days? Is that in now? Pressed powder, bitches. Live it.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I’m wondering if all the shiny we’ve been seeing is the dewy look gone horribly wrong. Is “dewy” back in? I spent so many years having to keep track of make-up trends, and once I left the business I stopped paying attention.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I don’t believe in dewy — ever.  So I ignore whether it’s in or out, because I figure it’s my face and I’m going to have it how I like it:)  Besides, I have to go for matte to start with or I end up greasy instead of dewy within a few hours.

          • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Yeah, dewy is really hard to pull off without eventually looking sweaty or oily. It can be young and fresh looking, but what a pain in the ass to maintain.

I’m with you. I’ve always gone for a matte look. It’s more sophisticated and womanly, I think.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=167100010 Meghan Young

I’m going to object, actually. Her face is SHINY – they have wipes for that – and I think the dress isn’t quite the right size for her (it fits her a little big and looks too flouncy as a result). I do love the colors on her, and agree that with a little tailoring and a quick go-over with some powder or a Kleenex, this look is WERQ worthy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I agree regarding the low back and the low-cut front — too much. Makes me nervous that a gust of wind and all will be revealed.

    • aussiegal77

Agree, a vision of loveliness but I must quibble about the shoes…..such a light floaty dress and then clunky shoes.  But yes, absolutely better choice than real clunkers like platforms.

    • Anonymous

I’m so sorry that Lea is being eaten alive by a huge piece of spangly taupe chiffon. Oh, wait. No, I’m not. She’s swimming in this MOB thing.

The double-sided tape is a bit too visible, but considering the gown, it’s completely necessary and does well what it’s supposed to do. She looks fab.

    • Anonymous

I hope she’s got industrial strength boob tape. And I think the dress was made for a taller woman. It doesn’t look like the back hem puddles so much on the runway model.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She is rocking that color, but the vast acreage of exposed chest just really doesn’t do it for me.  That much skin isn’t any more flattering on her than the mountains of cleavage on Ms. Hendricks – to my eyes, both dresses look poorly fitted.

    • Anonymous

I’m in love with the color, of the dress and her skin and really healthy hair, but she is a tiny, tiny girl and that dress looks about 2-4 sizes too big for her. Still, gotta give her props for making the sample size dress and shoes work for her regardless.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

It’s good, but not great. The color, makeup and shoes work for her, the dress mostly works (I think the back is too sloppy–too much fabric in the draping for her small frame), but I still hate her fringe.

    • elzatelzabelz

      Agreed. WERQ. All of it.

    • Anonymous

I do think she look s great here, but it has more to do with the fact that she is smiling and not desperately trying to look “sexy”.  She is a beautiful girl, but she simply looks better when she’s not trying to damned hard to be something she naturally isn’t.  Hopefully her agents will keep her clear of more embarrassing naughty catholic school girl photo spreads (word specifically chosen) and remind her that the Megan fox’s of the world have short shelf lives.

okay usually i am the one to get cranky on people when they’re like OMG I SEE GAPS AT THE BACKS OF HER 5″ HEELED PUMPS, SHOES TOO BIG because it’s like they’ve never worn heels before ever in their lives

but those shoes are too big they are CAVERNOUS

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I am obsessed with red carpet women wearing shoes that are too big, and I inspect them closely. I’ve worn lots of heels, and I’ve never worn a pair with a 1/2″ gap at the back. That’s what I see most of the time and it drives me crazy. I don’t even know how they walk in them when they’re that much too big. Also, it looks terrible.

Anyway: holy cats! I missed that massive gap at the front. Again, how was she able to walk in them without turning her ankle? There must be special Shoe Fairy Dust that keeps them from injuring themselves.

        • Anonymous

Okay, well I don’t know what your arches are like, but mine are high high high. When put in high high high heels, and when I walk around in those heels for a while, my foot starts to slide forward. Suddenly the toebox feels like it’s smashing my toes, and my heels are feeling a breeze. Is it because I purchased too-big shoes? Hardly, considering at my shoe size it’s sometimes impossible to find the cute shoes I want (mostly because I favor Japanese shoes, but, you know). It’s because of GRAVITY! Now, I have the sense of self-awareness to realize when this is happening, and shift back in my shoes. I feel like a lot of these starlets do not, because I have MET so many women who are not aware of the things happening on their body (skirt twisted halfway around their hips, straps twisted, etc) and get all flustered and defensive if you so much as subtly point it out. They’re tromping about posing for photographers and then being whisked from place to place, and I have no doubt that rather than wonder why the fit of their shoe just went from bearable to deathtrap, they just accept that heels are supposed to hurt and carry on tromping. The fairy dust you speak of, at least in these women’s cases, would probably be the front of their feet jammed tightly into the toeboxes.

But Lea here? I have no idea how she didn’t end up just stepping right out of these shoes.
