WERQ: Keira Knightley in Mary Katrantzou

Posted on September 02, 2011

Keira Knightley, we just want to say a few words to you. We won’t take long. You can continue posing while we speak.

We don’t know why you’re holding an elf and we think your hair’s just a little bit too flat (but the makeup’s gorgeous) and we’re willing to ovelook the Silly Putty shoes because we are SO HAPPY to see someone work a red carpet look that’s a little off the beaten path and we love Mary Katrantzou’s work (although this isn’t our favorite) and we think you’re fabulous for doing something a little risky even though it’s not to everybody’s taste and that’s why the fashion world is forever kissing your ass and also we just wanted to say…

You WERQ that crazy print shit, girl!

Okay, bye! Snaps up!

Hm. Do not like. Maybe it’s because I’m just not a fan of Ms. Knightly (if she NEVER does another movie I’d be quite content…..) Better than her usual fare, tho.

  • http://profiles.google.com/roseofthestage Emily Rose

Oh my god, this is so fierce! I think the nude shoe is actually a valid choice here because it doesn’t pull attention from that AWESOME print. And oh, sweet Jesus on a stick, to I covet that dress.

    • Anonymous

Yes! I agree. I LOVE that print. I wish people took risks like this more often on the red carpet, and you’re right- I think the shoes here actually serve the dress.

Sigh. I could see myself in this dress… so easily…

    • Anonymous

Agree that the shoes are OK with the dress, neutral was called for. It’s just that I think that particular nude is an ugly color.

  • Judy_J

I love that dress.  Unfortunate choice of footwear, and yes, her hair is too flat.  But the dress is gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

Unfortunate lack of choice of backdrop, but the dress is gorgeous.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Have to say, tho. The putty pumps are MILES better than those ridiculous clodhoppers in the runway look.

I agree…. that dress is such a pleasant change from short, shiny and strapless…. And unlike the earlier commenter… I like her a lot!

Maybe there’s a line of gnome clutches.  Although the head reminds me of the heads on my “Freudian Slippers.”

It’s nice to see someone wearing the right shade of pink lipstick for her skin tone!

Hair is definitely too flat. Shoes would have been better in the porcelain white color that’s at the top of the dress, where the flowers are. Still great, although I think a big part of it for me is just being happy to see Mary Katrantzou getting some red carpet love!

Love it!  And it’s a stuffed Sigmund Freud doll, since “A Dangerous Method” is about Freud and Jung.  Viggo Mortensen was also posing with it during the same photo call.

OH MY GOD, a movie about Freud and JUNG?? WITH VIGGO? Sorry for screaming but you just made my freaking day.

    You are beautiful.
    Your hair is beautiful.
    Your makeup is beautiful.
    Your dress is beautiful.
Your Silly Putty shoes are beautiful.
    Your elf is wonderful.

    That is all.

  • http://twitter.com/margo8461 Marguerite

Totally agree: She is WERQing it! Her make up is so gorgeous that you have to notice it. But how nice that the reason for noticing her facial finishing isn’t because she didn’t wear enough or complementary shades of makeup, or because she looks more like a 7th grade girl trying mascara & blush for the first time *shudders it’s so bad* than like a starlet on the Red Carpet. And although I wouldn’t wear my hair without some more volume in the style, I’m also not Kiera Knightley. She can, and did, wear her hair this straight and she looks fabulous.
She is a beautiful girl who is showing the wanna-be’s and the too-tired-to-be’s who have been populating the red carpet all summer, how it’s really done. WERQ it!

What’s wrong with her face? She’s usually a pretty girl.

  • Anonymous

Not always a fan of her, but that dress is FABULOUS and she looks great in it. Love the bob, too.

I really wish she would stop posing with her lips pursed out like that.

  • MilaXX

Love the dress! I also love the hair and the makeup is gorge. Wish she had a more interesting shoe, but that’s a minor quibble when everything else is right.

Wowza!   I love this, head to toe.  That is a super cut on her, I usually don’t like that blunt cut but it really works on her face.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I agree. A total WERQ! The silly putty pumps are actually a great choice for this outfit. Love crazy print dresses, and this one is a knock out, especially on her. I like that she is doing a little less of the “I’m sucking lemons” face.

  • Anonymous

Yay, a fun dress done right! I like it a lot. The shoes need to be burned…she could’ve done so much better. Still, she is WERQing it.

Agreed.  I was thinking the few words that needed to be said were, “Please eat something.”  She is beautiful, but a bit on the thin side…to the point where she looks frail.

My kingdom for a bit of volume in her hair. And the shoes are a snooze. But that dress is beyond divoon.

  • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

I’m not without my quibbles, but damn is she WERQing that.

  • Anonymous

Mary Katrantzou has won my heart. Keira is lovely here; I can safely ignore the silly putty on her feet, admire the perfection of her simple hair style, and lust away for that beautiful print dress.

  • http://twitter.com/warontara Tara

I’m loving it..and I truly do not care for her as an actress (it’s the talking through her teeth thing that she does. But that dress is GORGE!!! I think the silly putty shoes work here, like a previous commenter said, it doesn’t pull the focus from that amazing print!

And I’m rolling my eyes at the inevitable “oh my GOD she’s SO SKINNY” commentary, cause she has always been, and will probably always be, a healthy and naturally thin woman. Get over it, y’all, it does happen in nature.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

Ironically, I was thinking, “Keira has put on some weight and she looks amazing.”  Love her hair, love the dress, and she’s got one hell of a face.

great dress — she looks wonderful — I even like the haircut. but those SHOES. WHEN WILL THEY DISAPPEAR. It won’t be fast enough for me. Sooooooo boring.

  • Anonymous

she is so pretty.   i wish i had her lipstick.

  • Anonymous

An exquisite print. Why not a simple classic pump in black or luggage, without the chunkiness? Perfect, otherwise.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the shoes, but they don’t matter with this very pretty dress.  She looks great except for the hair and the elf.

  • Anonymous

I know, the elf is kind of a fun mystery, isn’t it?  Such a thing to ponder on a Friday evening.

Love the dress, love the whole look, including hair and makeup, with the exception of the putty shoes (would black shoes really have been a crime against humanity?).

I can’t agree about the WERQ because no attitude on display, but I give her an In+ for very very very prettiness.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Love, love, love it!!! Nobody else could do this look.

  • Anonymous

My first thought was a gold shoe or sandal — but with the orange on the bottom half it wouldn’t have gone. I can see why she had trouble picking a color (black would have been too heavy). Maybe something that would have picked up the teal — but only if the shoe itself wasn’t this heavy clunker, maybe again a sandal with a heel almost colorless but very light strap in that color.

She looks perfect! Gets away with nude shoes, a too-busy print dress in a hard-to-wear length, and hair that normally wouldn’t be recommended for her features. All while clutching a luridly striped Sigmund Freud elf! Yet she looks spectacular. If that ain’t WERQing it, I don’t know what is.

  • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

I will let the shoes go because for once, she doesn’t look like a giant lollipop.  That print is so ugly it’s beautiful, if you know what I mean.  I too had to google the designer because I’d never heard of her.  Some of her stuff is crazy beautiful.

And Keira, I’m loving the hair and makeup.  Good for you!

  • Anonymous

    That’s a ugly dress.  Sorry.

But her hair is fierce.  I love me a severe bob even if it’s a bit flat.

Hate the dress!  Oddly, when I saw the thumbnail, I thought, “That looks cute!”, but when I saw the full-length shot, I wanted to puke.  That is one of the ugliest, messiest prints I’ve ever seen.

I love this dress and I really love her.  What’s not to love about a dame so hot she could be a hot dude?  I thought she was really guy-hot in Bend It Like Beckham.  Hotter than JRM and he’s no slouch.

But to be frank, I was expecting cries of “MOM HAIR” from TLO.  The only difference between KK’s hair and Marissa Tomei’s is that MT’s hair has waaay more life (product, whatever).  And what’s with those shoes??????  Why bother putting shoes on if you’re just going to wear a pair that matches your skin tone?  So many beautiful shoes out there and these celebrities settle for flesh-colored clod-hoppers?

  • Anonymous

I finally saw someone wearing the putty shoes in person.  They look worse up close.  Sometime there is the “maybe it looks more expensive or better in person.”  These shoes do not fall in that category.

Love the dress on her, though.

That is one fabulous dress and kudos to KK for wearing it at An Event.  However, if there’s one thing TLo has taught us, it’s that bitter kittens must be ruthless and courageous in their assessments and not give in to emotion.  (Remember the whole Robert Downey, Jr. kerfluffle? We were taken to task!)  And those shoes are unforgivable with this dress. Not only are they the stupid and unflattering Bandaid Batter color, but their proportion is totally wrong with the length of the dress and the delicacy of KK’s bone structure (translation: Girl is thin as a thread).  I think her WERQ needs to be revoked. If we are going to be brutal, let’s be brutal to these stupid shoes, and maybe they’ll go away.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

WERQ! I think the shoe is justified because of the prints on the dress.  I love that dress!

  • Anonymous

I think she’s a little pale to really pull this off, which is why it looks better on the model. She’s right on the edge of being lost in the print around her face. That being said, I love graceful cut and length of the dress and wish I were one of the twelve women in the world who could actually wear it.

Lord, I am sick of those Crayola flesh colored shoes!

I love the dress. And I like the hair but not the color. Shoes are hiddy of course. No one has stated the obvious, however; she can KILL US ALL WITH HER EYEBROWS!

  • Erin Nice

I love her and this look, head to toe. She’s quirky and fabulous.

  • Anonymous

The shoes are kind of terrible, yes her hair needs more volume at the crown, and I’m not wild about the length of it on her (especially in the first photo; it looks better in the last one where the dress is moving). But the print, against all logic, works really well and the cut is perfect for her figure. Not to mention the fact that the dress *fits* – there’s no awkward gaping or pulling anywhere – and looks like it would be really easy to just pull on and go. Brava.

I look at the bodice and see a Day of the Dead sugar skull. Interesting dress but it doesn’t quite work for me.

  • Anonymous

I think the razor sharp hair accentuates this very modern look.  She’s a stunning woman.

  • Anonymous

Splendid! Except the color of the shoes. Innnnn.

  • Susan Crawford

The dress is absolutely amazing: the length, the swingy fit and flare cut, the print, the colors – everything on what could have been a hot mess of a piece came together and worked fantastically for Katrantzou. I. Must. Have. This.

It’s sort of a challenge when you have a dress as kaleidoscopic as this to come up with a shoe that works – I agree with T Lo that the Silly Putty colored pumps are sort of blah, but basically inoffensive. Maybe I would have gone with something less bulky looking than the platform pump style, but no biggie.

Her makeup here is just right, soft and underplayed against the pattern of the dress, and I love the sharp bob, but agree that a BIT more volume and roundness would have been very pretty. Meantime, I hope once she got to whatever after party she attended, she WERQed a few sliders and mini quiche, because that beeyotch is way too scary-skinny!

  • Lies L.

Love the dress. Do not love her.

  • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

I think the Silly Putty shoes were actually a pretty smart choice. The print on the dress is sooo crazy that if she tried to match them, it’d probably be too much. Black pumps would have been too heavy. I love Keira, I don’t understand all the hate towards her. She’s one of the prodigies that started acting at a young age but didn’t let the fame go to her head, she keeps out of trouble, and she’s a decent actress. I only wish she’d do more modern films, because she’s beginning to be typecasted as a period-piece girl.

  • Beth G

Sigh… you said silly putty shoes.  And with capitalization.  My life is complete.

I like the dress, but my eyes kept trying to make it do that 3D thing where you stare into a pattern for a long time and then pretty soon some 3 dimensional thing pops off the page….
