WERQ: Jennifer Hudson in Giambattista Valli

Posted on September 16, 2011

Oh, Sweetie. We’re so happy for you!

Jennifer Hudson in Giambattista ValliJennifer Hudson attends Self Magazine’s 2011 “Women Doing Good Awards” in New York City in a Giambattista Valli dress.

We’re not happy because you won a “Women Doing Good” award or because you lost weight – wait, that came out wrong. We are happy for you because of those things, but we’re more happy for you because you really seem to be learning how to wear clothes that fit your new body. After you lost that weight, you made the typical newly-thin mistakes of wearing clothes that were way too tight on you and/or didn’t fit your no-doubt smaller cup size as well as they should. And while the dress is a good two inches too short, we love the drape in the skirt, the brilliant color and the accentuated shoulders, all of which suit you perfectly. You WERQ that body, girl!

She looks great! Good jewellery choices too. Minor quibbles: Her hair’s too long for my taste, and agree that the dress could use a few extra inches on the bottom.

Love the dress, accessories, and makeup, hate the hair extensions.

Same here. She’s an IN minus that dead animal on her shoulder.

Looking good here, but I find the bad hair extensions very distracting. Girl, you are practically swimming in money so I know you can afford a much better ‘do.

      • Anonymous

That’s immediately what I thought. She looks great but goodness, the hair is not working. It looks like a bad wig.

Wait. She’s being honored because she got paid by Weight Watchers to lose weight? Someone please tell me she’s done charity work or something too!! Also she looks fine but I don’t like the shoes at all.

      • Anonymous

She has done quite a bit of charity work including a foundation in Chicago in honor of her murdered nephew.  She is also active in local NAACP work.

She started a foundation in Chicago named after her nephew who was murdered.  They give away toys at Christmas to needy kids in Chicago. I think that’s why she’s being honored.

j’adore that color on her.  It’s so vibrant and pretty.  And her legs look a million miles long.  Saying that, she looks like a bit of a bobblehead, I think she may have lost too much weight.  either that or it’s her extensions which are way too long, poufy, and heavy.

      Dear Jennifer,
Since you’ve  just turn 30, here’s a rule you might consider in the future: If your fingers extend beyond the length of your skirt, think about lengthening your skirt.  Shortening your fingers is not a viable option.

    • Anonymous

The skirt is 2 inches too short, otherwise a great look.  This is annoying: 2 more inches will still leave her “fierce”, so why is her skirt so short?

    • Anonymous

The skirt is too short and the extension are too long, but she looks fabulous in that color and is just generally radiant.

    • Anonymous

Hair and dress length aren’t perfect, but she looks terrific.

    • Anonymous

Her skirt is too short because she is a pop-star. Yes, I know, she is an actress too but she’s more of a Cher than a Meryl so let’s be glad she isn’t dressed like Katy Perry and call it a day. She looks great.

      • scottyf

No. No. No. No. No. She is NOT an actor. I usually don’t go for absolutes, but I just can’t help it in this case. Ms. Hudson is lovely. She is an extremely talented singer, and she looks great in red–but the Oscar was a horrible, horrible fluke. And since Cher is busy defending her son Chaz, I will have to defend her: Cher is one of only a very few singers who actually understands the craft of acting. She is thoughtful and nuanced in her performances. She more than deserved her statuette. Jennifer Hudson is an amateur (at BEST) actor who can’t even convince me to try Weight Watchers by reading the copy. She won over Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal…CATE BLANCHETT. That TELLS you it was an ill-advised, cracktastic, political, pity win!!!!! Pop Star? YES. Actor? NO.

        *takes a deep breath*

This concludes my unexpected and uncalled for Gay Rant. I now return you to your regular comments.

No. No. No. No. She is NOT an actor. I’m usually not so concrete about these things, but with Ms. Hudson I must object. She is an exceptional singer, and she looks lovely in red; but her Oscar win was proof that something went horribly, horribly wrong in the Universe. And since Cher is busy defending her son, I will have to do the same for her. Cher is one of the few singers who actually understands the craft of acting. She delivers thoughtful, nuanced performances. She earned her statuette for Moonstruck. Ms. Hudson won against Cate Blanchett…CATE BLANCHETT??!!! Further proof that there was a rift in the Time/Space Continuum. It was an academy Sympathy Vote. Jennifer Hudson, imho, is (at BEST) an amateur actor, who can’t even get me to try Weight Watchers by reading the copy. Pop Star? Yes. Actor? NO. NO. NO. NO.

She does look great here, but the dress is a tad too short. Either lengthen the dress or wear pantyhose. Pantyhose would smooth her legs, especially her thighs out.

    • Anonymous

Love the dress MUCHO. It is a scosh short for mere mortals but she looks great. And happy.

There’s always the people after a famous person loses weight who say “But I liked her when she was bigger!!!”, but for me, I sincerely hope she did it for herself and that she truly feels good about herself, no matter her size.

Although I wish I could reach though the screen and turn the bottom half of every starlet wearing the Minnie Mouse shoes 90 degree either direction. They look like hooves if not photographed from the side.

    • Anonymous

My God, she’s a beautiful woman.  Thought so even when she was heavier.

    • Anonymous

Slim or not, she needs the rest of her dress back.

    • Anonymous

I agree, the color is fabulous on her, but the extensions are a big no-no. They look a bit ratty and are far to long. Not loving the shoe choice either.

    • Anonymous

Other than the unfortunate extension, she looks fantastic!  I even love the short length, she can totally pull it off.

    • narita_rayna

first time in a while that she hasnt looked gaunt.  she actually looks pretty damn great.  well done!

    • vmcdanie

The dress is no shorter than, say, Christina Ricci’s.

She looks great here. And with all she’s been through, it’s gratifying to see her look so happy and radiant.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Add me to the list of extension-haters. They just do not suit her and they are way too fashion-victimy. You’re better than that, Jennifer!

    • Anonymous

I don’t think her extensions look cheap or ratty at all. As far as obvious extensions go, they actually look pretty well cared-for and convincing. They’re a good five inches too long for my tastes, but that’s an easy fix. Here, honey, sit in the row in front of me for a quick sec.

I’d also like to see this with a different color shoe, but I’m not sure what. bronze, maybe?

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

But “obvious” and “convincing” don’t go together. They’re not ratty, but I think if you can tell they are not her hair, then they are not doing their job. It just looks silly. JMO. Maybe it’s because she became famous with her big, natural hair that this seems so strange for her.

        • Anonymous

I disagree. I have seen many women with obvious extensions, weaves and wigs who were able to wear them with panache. Perhaps “convincing” isn’t the best word, but I’m not sure what word to substitute. How about this: if I knew nothing about her or about black hair, I wouldn’t call this out as artificial. However, knowing that her extensions are of a different texture than her real hair, I am aware if the artifice.

I think that’s it. If I had never heard of Jennifer Hudson, I don’t know that I would “know” if it was her real hair or not. But I do know, and I really liked her hair before. Simon Cowell was so mean to her about it. *sigh* That’s Hollywood!

        • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

A male friend who wears a full wig pointed out that another man’s wig was really good. My answer was that if you could tell it was a wig in the first place, then it wasn’t so good after all. Same goes for extensions.

Oh dear…was she sweating through her dress? Pit stains on the red carpet…uh-oh.   Love the bottom of the dress, great color; too much hair.

      • Anonymous

Pit stains? Honey, that’s how bright red fabric photographs. Did you look at the shadows of the draping on her skirt?

        • Anonymous

Hmm, I think they are pit stains.  But sometimes pit stains happen, no matter what you do.  What was she supposed to do, go home?

          • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I suppose she could get botox injections so she never, ever sweats again. I was horrified to learn that people actually do that.

        • Anonymous

Hmm, could actually be pit stains b/c they are so much darker than the other shadows. Could explain why her arms so rigidly at her sides, tin-solider style. Not criticizing her if they are pit stains…it is just unfortunate. I do hope they are shadows.

    • Anonymous

Shorter hair+Longer dress = fantastic. But she still gets an in

    • Anonymous

The length of the skirt is fine with me…she’s balanced with all the coverage atop.  Good color on her.  The hair is too much, but all in all she looks pretty fab.

JHud is one celeb that I truly have a soft spot for, admire and wish only the best for…such a strong, talented and positive person. :)

Love it! As somebody who just lost about 60 lbs. after being about the same size/measurements for ages, I can attest that it can be really hard to figure out what to wear because EVERYTHING fits completely different. My shoe size even changed! So I’m glad to see Jennifer Hudson finally WERQ it on the red carpet!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

Every time I see her I think of the Jill Scott hair and the jade colored unitard on American Idol and I just giggle. You sure came  a long way girl! You GO!

    • Toto Maya

Not a fan of the hair, but everything else is awesome.

    • bookish

Has she maybe gained a pound or two or do you think it’s just the fact that she’s not wearing something quite so tight? I mean that in a good way. I thought she looked a bit too thin for a while, but she looks fantastic here! And that color is so nice on her.

    • Anonymous

SHUT THE FUCK UP! U BITCHES LIKE TO NITPICK. AND FOR THE RECORD IT IS A LACE FRONT WIG NOT EXTENSIONS.

    • glennethph

She’s looking more and more like a bobblehead.

      • Anonymous

That is distortion from a wide angle camera lens.

        –GothamTomato

    • Lisa

Just stunning.  On her new WW commercial, she looks a tad too thin, but she may have gained back a pound or two, which suits her.

    • Anonymous

She looks great, but she would look even better if her hair was a little shorter.

    • Anonymous

Agree on all counts. And yes, the skirt could be a couple of inches longer.

    • Anonymous

She looks like a totally different person.  I guess that since she gave up on skin tight, she decided to show off her legs.  She’s probably still really pumped about her great new body.

    • Anonymous

This is a beautiful dress and it looks great on her.  It’s definitely a little short and would be more flattering if it were a little longer, but everything else is just perfect.  I’m really happy for her.  She has made a great life and a great career, and she deserves every award she gets.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Legs for days! I hate all the hair being swept to one side, but it’s apparently a thing now and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.

Considering how a lot of pop stars dress (if you can call that dressing), the dress length is fine. The draping, which I love, gives the dress a bit of elegance and keeps it from looking like an expanded tube top. You’re awesome, Ms. Hudson.

    • Anonymous

Oh, absolutely on the fit of the dress. Terrific! I just wish she didn’t have that dead animal on her shoulder. It makes me sad. Jennifer, you’re so luscious in that dress! Make your people take away the dead animal!

    • Anonymous

The fit and color of that dress are perfect on her. Agree that even just another inch on the length would be good. Wish the hair were not over her shoulder like that. Reminds me of how all the tween girls wear their hair and play with it.

    • Judy_J

Fabulous!  I agree with everything y’all said.  Skirt could definitely use a couple of inches in length, but that’s the only flaw in this otherwise perfect look.

    • Anonymous

She looks great of course – but I have to admit, when I saw the thumbnail I almost didn’t click because it seems she’s worn this very dress (or something close to it) for at least the past year now, maybe longer.

    • http://twitter.com/Ash2046 Ashley Wu

Bad hair. Half of it looks straight and the other looks wavy, it looks like she stuck 2 pieces together in a hurry but otherwise the dress looks great and her weight loss is inspirational.

    • Geno Boggiatto

      She’s practically glowing! Looking gooooood.

    • Anonymous

2″-3″ too short, otherwise gorgeous. Except maybe the hair, which looks fakey and cheapens her overall look. Her smile is radiant.

    • Anonymous

Love it – and the nail colour and the shoes. Not a fan of how she poses for pics, especially since its making her thigh look lumpy, but then again, I am a bit anal.

    • Anonymous

She looks wonderful! Thanks, guys, for recognizing her!
