Versace Spring 2012 Collection

Versace Spring 2012 Collection

Once again, Donatella has revisited the Versace archives and put her own spin on things. Cutouts, bedazzling and eye-catching prints rendered in mostly body-conscious silhouettes with a decent amount of skin showing. It’s Biker Barbie with a rather juvenile motif of sparkly seahorses and starfish. Add some lucite heels to the mix and it all goes a little “Adult Video Awards,” but we’re (obviously) not the customer here. There will always be a market for these looks and Versace knows how to appeal to the girl who wants to turn the maximum number of heads. Let’s all play “Guess which ones January Jones will wear on the red carpet?” We say #3 in the first row and #2 in the 9th row.

I always wanted a seahorse guard for my vagoo.

I guess bare midriffs really are back. Sigh. 20 years ago when I had the body to wear them, I didn’t have the confidence and now that I have the confidence, I don’t have the body. Ain’t it always the way?

      • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

twenty years ago there was a window, both absolute & very limited, thru which only an infinitesimal pie sliver of the population could peer while wearing a bare midriff dress.

today that window is, no pun intended, wider. not exponentially, mind you, but more it had been w/in the last forty five years. so it is possible you can still wear them. if you can afford them. & if you want them. i daresay i cant or dont fit into the last two categories, even if, perhaps, on alternate days i might–might–fit into the first.

ALL of the sea inspired prints and motifs are hideous and quite silly really.  And is that another Two-Dress-Halves Horror I see?!?!?  (1st pic in row 8)  Please lord, make it STOP!!!!

      • Anonymous

Those prints remind me of when people decide it would be very creative and original to decorate their bathrooms in an underwater theme. Seafoam green or soft blue paint on the walls, seahorses, starfish and assorted shells stencilled here and there, some hideous aquatic-themed border circling the room and don’t forget every single bathroom accessory and textile, down to the light switch plate and toilet lid, MUST possess some sort of sea-inspired design.

        • Anonymous

Oh, my mom had this. To be fair she did live on the Florida coast. Shoot me, cause I thought it was charming ;/ (her bathroom, that is)

This stuff, some of it’s cute, best for a party at the beach house after dark.

          • Anonymous

: ) No offense to your mom. A dear friend of mine has this too and she loves it so much, I don’t have the heart to tell her. I could be wrong, but I’m just not a fan of theme decorating.

    • Anonymous

I normally love Versace, but…. ew.

    • Kirsten W

is it just me or are half the looks the same bandau/skirt or shorts/jacket/bandeau combo in different colors?

      • Anonymous

It’s not just you. I thought so too.

    • Anonymous

These are mostly kind of ugly. And seems tackier than the average Versace show. Do not want.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I’m a pretty consistent Versace fan, but I’m not responding well to this collection, at all.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

Surprisingly, I liked a lot of this. Usually Versace is just too over the top, but many pieces here seem surprisingly wearable.

    • Anonymous

Wow.  Fugtastic.  Also, can the center hair-parting stop now?

    • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Urban Gypsy aka Tess

Did Josh get a job at Versace? That last gown looks like someone let him and his bedazzler go wild.

I can’t believe these are Versace, so many of them are supremely tacky and I can deal with a fair amount of tack.  Then again, if I go to AVN again, they’d be perfect, that is if I had the body and the money.

      • Anonymous

yes, it looks like they hooked a bedazzler and hot glue gun up to a rainbird sprinkler and cranked it up.

    • http://twitter.com/Sporkadelica Sporkadelica

Ugh. Bedazzled sea creatures, really? Was she inspired by the iron-on aisle at her local craft store? And that blue and white shell print looks like it could have been reclaimed from the bedspread I had when I was 10.

    • Anonymous

I’ve liked some of the cutouts and studs in the past, but nothing is working for me in this collection. The colors and prints are totally uninspiring.

    • Anonymous

Love.  I wouldn’t wear any of it, mind you.  But pretty to look at.  Even the yellow, which I typically abhor.

    • Anonymous

Versace and pastels are an unnatural combination. It may be one of the signs of the Apocalypse.

    • Anonymous

Chip, chip, and chip in not-a-good-way.  I’m just tooo darn old for all of this, I’m realizing!

    • https://me.yahoo.com/a/dLUE.9h6zdoHMLprP6AQrSQpKt0CZys-#e58b4 tom

For a drag queen Donatella shows rather restrained taste however it really does seem like a replay of past work.  Despite the glitz it just comes off boring and kind of “been there done that”.

    • Anonymous

Bleh….. and that last gown to the right?!?!  WTF?  Bedazzled starfish with a bikini top?

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The huge majority of this collection screams, “VERY expensive call girl”.
The last row of evening dresses made me snort out loud?  What was her inspiration; the Little Mermaid?

    • Anonymous

Mmmm, I can see some nice separates here.  Jackets, tops, skirts.

Otherwise, “vagoo.” My new burlesque name is Vera Vagoo.  The act will include my sisters Vivianne, Vuvuzeya, Vicki and Val.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And their Euro cousin Va Va!

    • Anonymous

Augh, granny panties-style shorts! Please, designers of the world, stop it with this. They are flattering on no one, not even grannies.

    • Anonymous

I like quite a few of these, if it weren’t for the starfish and seahorses. It all reads a little too Jersey shore to me (not Jersey Shore).

    • MilaXX

I’ll go one further and put money on the #3 on the 8th row as a way of saying “I got my pre-baby body back”.

      • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

early 60s liz taylor done badly, now worn by a model w/ a moustache.

but yeah, as for JJ, i think you are probably right.

        • Anonymous

Ahahaha, model with a moustache!  Who came up with the lighted runway anyway?  NO ONE looks good lit from below!

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

most of it’s silly & serious pastiche of all the decades that have come & gone w/in the last fifty or so years–more if you include all the pastiches of & homages to decades previous contained in those years {if i make sense}.

i do really like the second look in the second row, an outfit which seems to come out of nowhere amid the rest of this. for some reason i also like the last dress in the second to last row– i dont know why, exactly, it’s really too much. &, while i can see madonna put it on, it truly belongs on cher. i dont think she’ll attempt it any more, however. pity.

may i use the simple, uncluttered word idiotic for all the starfishes?
      {i’m sure theres a better one but i am tired, & they, poor inanimate things, dont deserve it.}

not a lazy collection, exactly, but a very expected one.

      • http://pissiechrissie.tumblr.com/ Chrissie

2nd look in 2nd row stood out to me too. Also 2nd look in 5th row (had there not been a bandeau top, but an actual shirt.)

    • Anonymous

      For the most part, lovely

    • Anonymous

If her name weren’t Versace, her looks would be sold at Frederick’s of Hollywood.

    • Addicted2Glamour

This is all a little too “former Porn Star now living in South Beach with Coke Kingpin circa 1985″ for me.

    • Anonymous

I I were consistent with many prior posts, I should disapprove, but I kind of like this stuff. It isn’t pretending to be ground breaking haut couture. It ‘s good natured, fun, and not as slutty a collection as I’d expected. Or maybe my standards are drooping. I agree that the outfits with the large watery [photographic?] images are intriguing even if the image are corny.

    • Anonymous

Don’t like any of these except the third one in the second to last row, next to your second JJ pick, TLo. The cut is more tasteful, the color is interesting, and the bedazzling is in just one color and an interesting motif.

    • Anonymous

I’m not normally a fan of Versace’s product.  Usually I can find one or two things in the collection that I like. With this one, I like about half of it, haha.

    • Rand Ortega

I’m scared of this collection. The juxtaposition of AVA & Starfish w/ Seahorses is beyond unnerving.
      What’s next? Ballcocks & Unicorns?
Sorry Donatella.  J’Adore, your sexy aesthetic usually thrills me. But this collection, while it has a few lovely pieces, doesn’t work as a whole.

    • Anonymous

      Love the color palette.

    • Anonymous

Definitely Barbie clothes.  I’ve always kind of liked silver studs (the metal head in me), but gold/brass ones either read “sailor” or “cheap” to me.  Bleh.

    • Anonymous

I guess I’m too practical.  I look at this and wonder, “How do you get through airport screening with all that metal?  Will it demagnetize your credit cards?”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

The color palette is pleasing to me but, jeez, who let Josh bedazzle the collection? Also, high-waisted granny panties are a no.

    • Susan Crawford

“Donatella! This is the Schmatta Squad. We have the atelier surrounded. Step away from the bedazzler and come out with your hands up or we will be forced to toss in the glitter grenades!”

      • Anonymous

        LOL Yes!

    • judi townsend

my least favorite Versace collection – what is going on with Donatella?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

The collection is not meant for me, so there’s no point in my complaining about it.  Those shoes, however – really?  I was surprised there were no seahorses actually floating in the lucite platforms.  Tacky is an understatement.

      • Anonymous

That’s it! I knew something was missing.

    • Anonymous

I’m sort of a part of this collection’s market (i.e. a 20 year old girl), but I still don’t like it. I really hate all those starfishes and seahorses. The collection would have become immediately better if she had removed all of those. Usually I really love “window shopping” Versace’s clothes, but I wouldn’t want to wear any of these.

    • Anonymous

Some of the fabrics are great.

    • Anonymous

I kind of like the little sea green number (last dress in row #5) but other than that it’s too much mermaid vibe for me.  I wonder if “Under the Sea” was the background music?  And while January Jones is, as you point out, TLo, a great celeb choice for these dresses, I saw the very last gown and all I could think of was Cher.  Remember the getup she wore when she won her Oscar for “Moonstruck”?  http://style.popcrunch.com/the-5-worst-oscar-fashions-of-all-time/

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Gosh, I REALLY doubt Donatella was going for the Bob Mackie look LOL!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

I had only one thought as I saw the very last one — mermaid barbie.

      • Anonymous

Totally! “Mermaid Barbie”, I love it!

    • Anonymous

I always wondered if Versace paid for product placement in Showgirls.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Don’t we all love a good strapless bra with our pencil skirts for the office?  I was so hoping someone was going to do this…and Dontella did not disappoint!  Seriously, some of the pieces are really pretty, but overall, this is just a collection for the Paris Hilton’s of the world.

      • Anonymous

And you could switch up that too conservative pencil skirt for the girdle in look #4 (a la the Pan Am show.  I grew up with girdles, and I do not want to see them.  Ever. Again.)

    • Anonymous

      Trampy.

    • Anonymous

The bottom row makes me want to hate the entire thing.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

#1 in row 9 looks like something Salma Hayek would be wearing right now.

    • Anonymous

The first look in row 7 is gorgeous.  The placement of the studs is so figure-flattering!

    • Anonymous

      Unda da sea…

ok but I do like the yellow gown, for some reason, the short minty green dress. My mother would shriek “it looks like a nightie!” though. In any case, I just cannot abide those sea creatures.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Stephens-Bassett/1503492602 Karen Stephens Bassett

The top model in yellow looks a little like Nina, if you scrunch up your eyes.  She has definitely got the Nina Attitude going.

    • Wrenaria

Barbie clothes with Barbie styling.  There’s a couple okay things, but overall, definitely not to my taste.

    • http://twitter.com/margs4 Margaret Grace

I really like and would wear almost all of the short dresses, but then again, I’m 22 and flat-chested with boy hips, so they hopefully wouldn’t look too trashy on me.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Well, I love the yellow skirt and jacket at the top, although I would not wear it with a bandeau.  Gorgeous.  A few of the day dresses are good.  Most of the rest, I’ll pass.
