Venice Film Festival Red Carpet – Day 2

Posted on September 02, 2011

Hey, kids! It’s Friday! Let’s do a quick rundown of red carpet highlights from Day Two of the Venice Film Festival and say short, bitchy things about each outfit! Okay? Okay!

Abbie Cornish in Atelier Versace Spring 2011Abbie Cornish attends the ‘W.E.’ premiere in Atelier Versace.

It gets a little “saloon girl” up around the bustline, but the rest of it is fabulous. We just wish she’d done something better with her hair.

Asia Argento in Alberta FerrettiAsia Argento attends the ‘Carnage’ premiere in Alberta Ferretti.

Oh, HONEY. We don’t much like the Martha Mitchell hair, but once you move down past that, it all starts getting very pretty. Then you hit the crotch and it all goes wrong.

Hey. We think we just coined a fashion term. When a dress looks great except for one really bad idea, that’s called “hitting the crotch.” Usage: “Man, that dress was fine until we got to the sheer lace skirt, then it all just hit the crotch.”

Andrea Riseborough in Christian Dior CoutureAndrea Riseborough attends the ‘W.E.’ premiere in Christian Dior Couture.

We are very thankful that she or her stylist insisted on a top to go with this dress. It’s a really gorgeous dress, but that is so not her color and the rather underplayed makeup doesn’t help. It’s beautiful, but it’s not her dress.

Kate Winslet in Victoria BeckhamKate Winslet attends the ‘Carnage’ premiere in Victoria Beckham.

Victoria Beckham Fall 2011 Collection

Kate Winslet in Victoria Beckham

We don’t know… it’s all a bit Star Trek-y, especially with the pompadour hair. Plus, we don’t think that wing effect works as well on a woman with a decent-sized pair of boobs. It really alters the effect and kind of makes the top 3rd of the dress look like it’s inflated.

I think that Kate Winslet is wearing someone else’s dress, but that Andrea Riseborough looks beautiful.

Kate’s is also a going-out-to-dinner dress, rather than red carpet.

Noteon  the model  it was paired it with suede boots and clutch: without the big bust, it’s also chic office wear.

    Martha Mitchell?!  Nice Watergate-era reference.

I’m amazed that TLo knows who she was.  They’re too young to have spent a whole summer watching the hearings. :-)

    Kate’s bod rocks.

Even when the dress isn’t stellar, she always looks great.

      • Anonymous

I love her.  Here she looks like she’s playing the role of someone thirty years older.  Why?

Abbie Cornish — I liked the shape of the runway version much better.  Asia Argento — “hitting the crotch”….Love it!  Andrea Riseborough — pretty; runway version looks like the model was doing a “I dreamed I was a runway model in my Maidenform bra” print ad.  Kate Winslet — something about this is not quite right; maybe it’s that drab color.  She looks so washed out.

Still think Kate Winslet is super beautiful, but I think the hair isn’t working for me.

    Re: Kate Winslet:
Y’all need to eat some carbs, ’cause the lack of french fries in your diet is SERIOUSLY impeding your judgement.

She is WORKIN’ THAT DRESS LIKE A FAT MAN AT A GOLDEN CORRAL BUFFET.

I’m with you!  Kate looks amazing.  Having the fuller chest actually makes this dress, rather than takes away from it (it looks better on her than the model).  It isn’t high drama, like the saloon dress, but it is striking.

      • scottyf

I SO agree on both your points. I also think that the fit accentuates the subtle sheen giving it a richness and elegance. She is just fierce.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

For real. Kate puts that model to shame about 25 ways till Tuesday. She’s stunning.

  • Anonymous

Disagree strenuously on Andrea Riseborough. The color is perfect with her complexion, and she is so lovely and dewy that I’d hate to see her in heavier makeup. The only thing I can object to is her overplucked eyebrows.

I can’t get past the color on Kate Winslet’s dress. That color needs to be retired from the visible spectrum.

    • Anonymous

I agree about AR and the color. Saw it and thought ooooh, pretty!

  • Anonymous

If Kate’s hair had been softer and she had a bit more color on her lips, that dress would have been lovely. And I think her bewbs look GREAT in this dress. I don’t think the dress is the problem; it is the styling.

  • Terence Ng

The proportions on that Dior dress are all effed up. Way more appropriate on the model.

    • Anonymous

Agreed. Almost any other top would have been better.

I think Kate looks good.  The detail that bothers me is that her face look like it’s pulled too taut.

  • Anonymous

I feel like we’re watching a production of “Moulin Rouge”, with Winslet as the hardass madam in charge.

  • Rebecca Johnson

I also disagree re: Andrea Riseborough. The loose, dark hair is a great counterpoint to the pale color of the dress, and keeps the look from veering into Disney territory. A bit more eye makeup might have been welcome, but I think she looks really good. Not revolutionary or anything, but beautiful.

  • MilaXX

Abbie Cornish – Not loving the corseted top, hate the hair. The lower half of the dress is pretty.
Asia Argento – Prom hair, cute top, then as mentioned, it hits the crotch. That sheer bottom look only works on a handful of people. It ain’t working here.
Andrea Riseborough  – Pretty dress and makeup, just not the color for her. She needs a deeper tone. Same dress in chocolate or navy would work much better.
Kate Winslet – Pretty dress, but it looks too tight and the boobs are fighting the design elements on the top. hair is a bit too severe.

  • Anonymous

Cornish in Versace – love the dress but I fear it looks chip on anything other than a model-esque figure.  Chip in an expensive way.
Argento in Ferretti.  Chip.  Chip in a chip way.
Riseborough in Dior.  I like it on her.  I shouldn’t, but I do.  I wish a little more care to the hair and more dramatic makeup.
Winslet in Beckham.  The bosom/shoulder parts are a bit much for her, but she’s giving it her best.  Has she always tried to look so much like The Serious Actress?  Didn’t she used to have a little more fun?  Maybe it’s just my addled brain.

    • Anonymous

I do love that Ferretti line.

  • Anonymous

It’s Asia Argento. That’s probably the most covered-up she’s been in ages.

I admit, my first thought upon seeing Abbie Cornish was “dip-dyed courtesan.”

I don’t like scary Winslet, I wish she’d go away. I’d like the nice one back.

Not sure on Andrea Riseborough’s frock. I kind of wish they’d put a contrast top on it, or a deeper shade.

I don’t dislike Asia Argento’s. Ok, it’s a bit Cher lite, but she has enough edge to carry it off.

Abbie Cornish – I love that gown on the model, but not on her. The sheer areas are too much on her version, and the bodice doesn’t suit her shape. And although I understand why they’ve done it, losing the petticoat/structure under the skirt has taken a lot of the drama away.

I love the term scary Winslet… but I like scary Winslet better!

Oh the Dior is to die for….Kate, from boobs down looks ah-mazing…but that is something funky going on around her bust and shoulders.  I don’t see this working on smaller women either….it’s a bit odd, but very VB.

I really love that Beckham dress, but it looks like the top portion should’ve been a skosh bigger for Kate making it lay better on her shoulders. Otherwise, I like it…hate the hair though.

The others…hmmmm, don’t really care. I must need coffee.

I have to disagree with you guys on Kate.. She looks fabulous! Hair and all! (but I do like my sci-fi)

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

The only thing keeping this from a FUCK YEAH, KATE WINSLET is the neutral palette. With glam makeup and a stronger color it could have been amazing.  And how I’d love to see that gorgeous Dior on someone it doesn’t wash out!

  • Anonymous

Kate is WERQing the heck out of that dress. She looks curvy and real–unlike a lot of the plasticized women on the red carpet these days.

Come to think of it, I think I’ve lived *days* that have “hit the crotch” before. Great phrase, guys!

Ooh, I love when TLo makes short, bitchy comments about a whole group of outfits.  Those are my favorite posts.
Mostly agree with your takes, especially Asia Argento.  Doing so well and then you pan down and it just all hits the crotch.

If Kate had a touch more makeup on, it’d be perfect. As it is, the picture is arresting. She’s beautiful – and her body is amazing! Nice to see famous people who still look like they’re made of muscle and skin.

Kate’s dress seam is giving her VP, if you view it from the back.  I saw a pick from the back earlier and it’s really bad.  But the color is good on her and it does show off her slammin’ curvy bod.  I’m not a fan of the pompadour with this look, though I guess it keeps it more edgy.

  • Anonymous

I feel like the first dress is better suited for Zoe Saldana.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I think that’s the best Abbie Cornish has ever looked, hair and all.
    Horrible color on Kate Winslet
I LOVE Andrea Riseborough’s make up and I like that dress.

  • Anonymous

I think the ‘problem’ with the Winslet look is the triangle formed by the shoulder treatment and the hair (the camera angle might be a contributing factor). I really love the asymmetry in the runway styling and I think Kate would have benefitted from it.
    Other than that, go Posh!

Kate is gorgeous but that color on her is all wrong.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

I would like La Winslet’s dress if it was in a colour maybe. But I am not really against Star Treky stuff.
Also I thought Abbie Cornish was Kylie Minogue.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

I think the dress isn’t too awful on Kate, but the HAIR, dear God!  That’s what makes it ST-y.

Andrea looks like a princess.  The color’s not bad on her, and the make-up is fine.  Don’t over-do the make-up to take away from the gorgeous dress.

    Asian is wearing Brittney’s dress.

That dress is wrong for Abby in the bust.  She’s too built up top (bust, shoulders, etc) for that dress.

  • paintedfish30

Kate does look kind of Star Trek-y, but she does look curvy delicious.

I liked Kate Winslet better when she didn’t take herself quite so seriously.

kate winslet is wearing the best foundation garment[s] known to humankind.
now i gotta go back to work.

    • Anonymous

Well, if you saw her from the back, as mentioned above by RebeccaKW, you might change your mind. VPL. And, this dress is just plain too tight on her. Slammin’ curves she definately has, and I applaud her for flaunting them, but a size up would still be slammin’ and look a whole lot better. Plus, I agree this color is not most women’s best friend. Very difficult to wear.

      • Anonymous

Good point – that look is a whole lotta fug from the back.

And on that note, I can’t express how much I HATE the oversized, exposed zipper trend.

        • Anonymous

Well, I know. But I have to say – now I’m getting used to it – and don’t despise it as much as before….sometimes it does add a little something something….

Andrea R. is wearing my mother’s prom dress from 1958. Seriously. That is exactly what it looked like- same color and everything. I’d post a pic if I had one.
Kate Winslet’s personal fashion icon is clearly Catherine Deneuve. And that is fine. But she hasn’t figured out how to make her hair softer like CD’s. She’s got all the right dresses but all the wrong tresses.

Kate’s dress needs to be a) a half-size larger, b) a different colour, and c) matched with some more dramatic jewelry – or something to make it more red-carpety. I will say for it, though, that the back is pretty sassy. It’s the first dress I’ve ever seen with the visible zipper/tape that I’ve actually thought worked with the dress.

Yes, or Rosario Dawson could carry it off, maybe.

I actually didn’t see any VPL – the seams across the middle carry around to the back and hug the butt, looking like a pantyline from a distance. I agree with the “go up a size” sentiment, though.

I think Kate looks FAB-U-LOUS, rock it girl!

And I hate to say this, but that Versace dress looked better on the model-it’s gorgeous, but it’s not the right one for Abbe…

I doubt Kate Winslet even took a breath all night. She looks fab, but that dress is majorly tight – not pulling, but yikes, is it tight.

I had to look at the back — oh, honey, NO!!!  It totally cheapens the look.  It is a bit aging, but the front’s classy and beautiful, even if it doesn’t say “Red Carpet.”  The back is just tragic — and the pony tail?  NO.

Don’t love that hair but that dress looks far better with her curves in it.  Kate looks great.

Are those sequin things on Andrea Riseborough’s dress shaped like stars? Because it looks like they are, and I’m pretty sure I had a dress just like that for my barbie when I was a kid. Not a fan.

The Dior dress is beautiful and I would have thought that it would look great on a dark haired woman.  You’re right though it just isn’t her.

I think both Andrea and Kate look awesome.

Abbie looks CHEAP. Partly because of the styling, but mostly because the dress is too saloon-y on anyone with a bit of flesh on their bones. And is it too tight? I think so.
Asia: It’s not good but it would look even worse on almost anyone else!
Andrea: The skirt needed a different top.
Kate: the shape, the styling, and colour are all wrong for her.

I had no idea who that 60+ year old woman in biege was…until you told me!  Holy Cow, Kate, you’re a beautiful, young woman!  WTF are you doing to yourself?  Let your hair down!  Put on some colored lipstick!  I like the dress, but if it were in a different color…

Katey Winslet looks FABULOUS!  No, no…I have to be definitive where you’ve choose to offer query…She is WERRRRQING that shit!  I don’t care if it IS a little Star Trek derivative, that Girl boldly chose to go where no woman was going at this event….and that was out of the nebula of boring princess fishtail gowns! Body is slammin’, the shoes are slammin, the over-all is minimal, chic, perfection!  Please…she wins the contest, fellas! You know it, she knows it and that’s why you put her here!  You just like to DARE us to disagree, don’t you! Shame on you for being coy in your commentary! ;)

I think every single one of these ladies looks awesome.  Have to admit, at first glance I didn’t like Ms Winslet’s look at all.  But then I tilted my head and furrowed my brow, and then I liked it.  Would have done a different lip, but I think she looks fierce.

I think Kate looks good, she is possession of the power to kick butt.
