In or Out: Sarah Jessica Parker in Stella McCartney

Posted on September 23, 2011

During Fashion Week, we skipped most of the Fashion’s Night Out events because the streets were insane and you were lucky to get a cab in under 45 minutes of frantic arm-waving, but we did make it to the Oscar de la Renta store to watch him sing with a mariachi band. Sarah Jessica showed up to lend her support and star power and we briefly wondered, as she hugged Oscar and posed for pictures, if it would be harder for us to rag on her style choices now that we’ve seen her as a living, breathing person and not just an image.

Then we saw these pictures.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Stella McCartneySarah Jessica Parker attends the 2011 New York City Ballet Fall Gala at the David Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center in NYC in a Stella McCartney dress.

Nope. Not a problem. Sarah Jessica? You’re too old for this dress. Kiss-kiss, chin-chin, darling. Hope to see you again soon.

Vote Now!
IN! That’s AGEIST, TLO!

OUT! Has she no gays?

Voting on Dianna Agron’s version of puritan chic is still open.

I think it has more to do with her ballet background – mine aren’t AS painful to the eye, but they aren’t pretty either.

        • bpayne

I don’t think you can blame it on ballet- look at her hands, they are on the same par as the feet.

So does that mean your grandma wears stilettos? Because I’d hate to see TLo start slapping people with rulers again for snarking about people’s looks…

I was just thinking it was about time for TLo to start busting the ruler out.  Rule #1 of the commentariat: no disparaging comments regarding people’s body parts.

It reminds me of the wedding dress Lauren Bacall wears in How to Marry a Millionaire.
It’s pretty. Though what is the shiny thing going towards her neck? Invisible straps?

        • Anonymous

it might be a longer necklace that is tucked in to the dress, something she’s keeping private like a religious medallion, good luck charm, something her child made, a voodoo talisman, who knows?

Oh, God why her again; the most overexposed non-celebrity; or yeah, she was on some TV show.  Anyway she should be arrested for stealing my mother’s lace tablecloth; Mom doesn’t even know it missing yet because it’s not Thanksgiving.

i love irish lace, and i even love dresses made of irish lace, most of the time.  but this looks like a risque dress made for wilma to wear to the nightclub in bedrock.  and the hair is just scary.  love the necklace but her feet look like they’re screaming to get out of those shoes.  i think the giant zipper teeth on the bag are an attempt to look edgy.  not working for you, dear.  but love your gardenia, another way to smell like my grandma’s house.

Uber OUT! There is an end table missing its tablecloth. That is exactly how much cloth was used to make a dress that is short for someone her age.

My thought was that this was the product of a PR tablecloth challenge.

Too old and yet too young. It’s the rare and special dress that can be both aging and too youthful in the same garment.  Let’s just say no and move on.  Also, yeah, as feet age, you really need to stop exposing them like that, especially if you’re on the lean and boney side of the build spectrum.  Her feet look 20 years older than the rest of her.

I’m inclined to give it an “in” for the same reason–that particular strain around her makes me a bit crazed.  Wear what you like at whatever age you feel like wearing it.

        • Anonymous

I don’t think it’s an age issue at all.

It’s an emaciation/Pilates abuse issue, coupled with a heavy eyeliner hand that create the sinister contrast between soft, romantic lace and sinewy, veiny flesh, accessorized by the Fright Night eye makeup. /shudder

This is a dress for a star in her 20s. Maybe early thirties. Not in her forties at all. I don’t think you are being ageist at all! Ageism is when you suggest all stars over 35 or so should wear mu-mus or (better yet) disappear.

IN. I think she looks fabulous. I rarely like anything by Stella McCartney, but this is chic. I fully acknowledge that it’s possible to dress too young or too old, and that’s a valid criticism of an outfit, but I don’t think she’s doing that here.

OTOH, fuck anyone who makes fun of the fact that SJP is a human who has dared to age past 25 and has hands and feet that reflect that.

This dress looks like a doily.

    • Judy_J

The only thing I like about this is the gardenia corsage, and that’s because I love gardenias.  That tablecloth dress is too short, and my god….those veiny feet!  THAT is one of the reasons nylons (as they were once called) should be worn unless the shoe is open-toed.  A multitude of sins can be obscured by well-fitting hosiery.

Hmmm. Lose the corsage, pair it with some different shoes, add a few inches on to the hem, put the dress in a different color, and it’s an in.

You know, I can’t help but think that this could have worked if it had been a bit longer and she had removed that ridiculous flower brooch. She looks really good in white and for a lace dress, it’s kind of pretty. Sort of. And while I do appreciate the fact that her hair isn’t in its usual painfully tight-looking bun, I think she could have at least done something about that halo of frizzies she has going on. One more thing: when is she going to stop with the 1/2″ thick line of eyeliner all around her eyes? It’s so aging. She has such pretty eyes; I wish she would go with softer make-up to complement them rather than overpower them. It’s maddening, really. Some of us would kill for bright blue eyes like that.

She certainly has the body for it. And people lay off her hands and feet.. like you can do much about that! Seriously, it’s petty.

Too old? I think she’s about 40 years too young for this dress. Shoulders and thighs aside, this reads as strictly matronly, and not in a classy awesome way either. Also, I don’t understand the accessories. They look like they were selected at random. I like the bracelets, but they don’t belong in the same wardrobe as that dress, much less the same outfit.

Also, I really like the bag but it looks like she stuffed an entire can of AquaNet in there. Based on this ensemble, I presume she’s been huffing it.

YES! That’s what I was trying to figure out. The cut says “20″ but all that white lace says “60″! It creates weird cognitive dissonance.

    • Anonymous

The only thing I can say in defense of the frizzy hairdo is that it is depressingly, consistently, seemingly never-endingly damp and humid here in the greater NY area this September (which I think generally is a wet month year in and year out).  Sarah’s got curly hair, and it may just have defied any taming product in the jillion percent humidity that is a current constant in these here flood-watch parts.

Not digging the shoes and I am not digging that flower pin.  Something about the dress itself seems off; maybe it’s the wilma aspect or the asymmetrical hem… I really can’t put my finger on it.  A decision needs to be made.  I’ve seen her in much better looks, so I’m going to go with a narrow OUT.

The Eyeliner makes her eyes look teeny.   I want to like the dress but it makes me all kinds of anxious.  And the shoes – are they suede or something?  They don’t go at all.  I love her personally because she seems pretty down to earth when interviewed.  And she’s sortof horsey looking, which is always a homey thing.  But this?  NO.

    • irielle

This is right on the cusp for me too and I blame it on the hemline. If it was consistently as long all around as the long side, I would think it’s just fine for her age. If it was consistently as short all around as the short side, I would say it was way too young for her. However, I don’t like her bag or shoes at all, so I’m leaning toward an OUT. She still looks pretty though so it isn’t a mean and scathing OUT.

Maybe we can strike a deal with Sarah that when she reaches age 50 in less than 4 more years, she will stop wearing skirts that expose her thighs.

It’s a tough business for a woman as she ages, but trying to look young really just makes her look bad.

I don’t think I can quite get to the dress – I think she’s so interesting and cool-looking and stylish, but every one of the accessories and the hair seem to me to be a mess with the dress.  Were the styling totally different, couldn’t she look gorgeous with lighter, long hair, different earrings, a funky but delicate shoe and no bag (with a strap, no less?  What on Earth?!)?

OUT, I;m afraid. This dress really does nothing to flatter SJP. The asymmetrical hemline, the bared shoulder – the whole dress is just NOT for her. Yes, she’s a tiny person, but in this dress she just looks frail. The hairstyle seems very harsh and all I can say about that dreadful, heavy looking handbag is that it looks like it is dislocating her arm. Ouch!

Seeing the first photo I thought, “Hey, she looks pretty good, here!”

      Then I scrolled down.

Once I saw that sleeve up close, there was no way this could be anything but an OUT.

Also, the adjective I want to use to describe her makeup is “tight,” but not in the hip-hop, appreciative sense. It’s making her face look squinchy with that dark liner on the inside of her lids. Eyeliner is supposed to make your eyes look bigger, not smaller.

I had that exact same eyeshadow color palette in several versions back in high school. Maybelline Trios are not where it’s at when you’re an A-lister, SJP. I even wore it with pink lip gloss.

The only good things: The purse is cute, but not with that outfit. The shoes are ordinary, but I’m glad to see they’re not nude, black, or that new trend of gray.

As a gardenia lover, I give SJP extra points for wearing a gardenia pin.  However, not enough extra points to overcome that schizophrenic dress, which can’t decide between mini or cocktail, sleeved or sleeveless, mod or retro.  Just too many things going on at once.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

You know, every time I see the name Stella McCartney I’m pretty sure I’m not going to like the dress. More often than not, I hate the dress.  I’m not sure this OUT has a thing to do with whether or not SJP is too “old” to wear this horror of a table cloth dress, but it gets an out nevertheless. I also am not in love with the eye make-up…enough with the harsh black all around the eye area. Since I like everything else, I’m gonna say she gets the OUT just for the crazy eyes.

      • Anonymous

I am more and more this way about Stella Mac myself.   Her designs are always a little off.   Most of the time it’s her choice of fabric that sends the garment off on the wrong track.   I’d like to like her designs, but I don’t.

    • Anonymous

IN she looks really great. except for the gardenia, but I’m being picky.

    • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

It was okay in the first picture, because her body hid that one really weird sleeve. I don’t know, that fabric just doesn’t do asymmetrical well, or maybe like you said, it’s an age issue. The lace combined with that hair is just a skosh that side of “matronly,” and that brooch is just horrendous.

    • Anonymous

OUT. It looks really unflattering, especially with the asymmetrical hem. And it ages her.

    • Anonymous

The gardenia is age appropriate, maybe too old even, but everything else is not. And the hairdo elongates her face which is not the best way for her to go. I’d have thought she knew that by now.

    • http://pinkpolarity.livejournal.com/ Polarity

This just proves that I’ll never understand fashion because I think she’s definitely IN. I don’t see that dress on a younger woman, the corsage is actually really pretty, and the dress fits her beautifully.

I do think it would have been better without the necklace and with softer makeup, though. Nobody looks good with black eyeliner all the way around. (Her feet are frightening, but that’s how nature made her. Hose would help, but is that in fashion now?)

I tend to agree, though her feet really are in bad shape–that doesn’t say “old” one way or another to me; it says she’s been wearing bad shoes for a really long time and should give her feet a rest between stiletto days.

    • Anonymous

Whenever I see SJP, I am reminded that she grew up going to thrift stores in Ohio. I think that she probably has a stylist, but that she is the one who puts most of her outfits together because she’s supposed to be some kind of fashion icon. (I never understood that.) But I also have to say that I’ve liked her since she was on Square Pegs. (Does anyone remember that show?)  Ultimately, I have to give her an out for this outfit, but I do appreciate that she mixes it up and takes risks. She’s definitely not boring.

I’ve been reading this blog because I find the writing and comments  really enjoyable, but I must admit to complete fashion-ignorance. I’m a guy who shops at J.C. Penney and Walmart and am usually found in cargo shorts and a T-shirt. What’s meant by “too old” or “too young” for a dress? If a dress is “too old” it means your body is too damaged by the years to have your appearance enhanced by the amount of skin shown? Does “too young” mean you’re showing not enough skin? Is lace young? I thought lace was old. If anybody wants to take the time and explain, I’ll be thankful. Otherwise, I know it’s a fun blog, so ignore me and have fun!

      • Sara__B

(Please realize that this is completely subjective, and proceed with caution…) Hollywood actresses spend zillions of dollars on cosmetic procedures and gym hours to keep looking as young and sexy as possible, but eventually, as someone wrote earlier, it’s time go for fabulousity and elegance instead of trying to compete with the starlets. It looks increasingly desperate and inappropriate — even silly — for a fit, good-looking, confident grown woman to keep choosing too tight, too short, and/or too much cleavage. (Just because the dress fits her rocking body doesn’t mean she should wear it!) At the same time, looking ready to attend the dinner dance on the AARP Mediterranean singles cruise isn’t the right look, either. SJP’s lace dress, hair, and makeup somehow manage to look both too old and too young at the same time. Starlet and cougar and AARP all mixed up together, and she is none of these things.

Poor SJP. But it’s true. She’s going to have to start remembering more and more to dress her age, and before you know it, she’ll be showing up in film as the matronly lady who gives advice to the young, starry-eyed blonde in the latest romcom.

Its the styling that makes her look too old for the dress. Some fresh, fierce ankle boots to cover her poor feet and loose, soft hair pinned half up would’ve salvaged the look from ‘trying too hard to be Carrie circa 2001.’ As is, gotta give the girl an OUT. But J’ADORE the dress!

Everything about this look is wrong. Messy hair, ugly dress that looks like my grandmother’s tablecloth (and the hem, if it’s going to be tapered, needed to taper in the same direction as the neckline), old lady feet in boring shoes, a cheap-looking purse with a camping bag clasp on a hardware store chain, jewelry that gets lost inside the dress, and what, dear G-d, is with the fucking corsage?

Yeah – out. That’s bad 80′s bridal and the 80′s is also the last time that dress was age-appropriate on her.  Indeed, have she no gays?

my first instinct was that she looks pretty here. IN.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Sorry, SJP, that’s not your dress. Doily/tablecloth comparions aside, it’s a pretty dress that would work on someone like Dianna Agron.

Totally disagree – I think she looks gorgeous too.  IN

It’s not about her age. It’s about how ridiculously hideous that dress is. Dear Lord.

In, surprisingly. It could use another motif of lace on the hem, at least, but it isn’t as ugly as her usual garb.

      Out.  sorry sjp.

Thanks so much TLo I was wondering where my mom hid my christening gown, now I know she let SJP tear off an arm

    • Lisa

It’s very “Hip, Middle-Aged Bride on Her Fourth Wedding.”  Which is to say, not good, as much as I love her.

      OUT!
Ugh. I just do not know about Stella – if her name wasn’t McCartney…

    • Addicted2Glamour

Most glaring (to me, anyway) is that her shoes look two sizes too small. That is usually the ONE thing SJP gets right. And this dress…The lace is tatty and sloppy at all the edges. It looks like used paper doily. To top it off her hair and makeup ( that EYELINER, again) harden her facial features something fierce. OUT.

YIKES!!!!!……oh hun white lace  - really??????

    • Margot Brose

She’s got the bod for it, but the accessorizing is overdone. However, since she dressed her body well: IN! TLO, you ageist queens!

    • Anonymous

SHE’S CARRIE BRADSHAW FOR FUCK’S SAKE, WHERE ARE HER GAYS??????

      Another unfortunate OUT.

    • Anonymous

      OUT!

P.S. My mum would like her kitchen curtains back. Thanx.

    • Anonymous

      I don’t think it’s her age. I think it’s the dress. OUT.

    • vmcdanie

But is she too old for it if she can pull it off? It seems to me that she can-easily. I’m going to say IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/shawn.eric.hill Shawn Hill

OUT! Right on the money, TLo!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

That dress looks like it’s made from a cheap tablecloth. I didn’t get far enough past the ugliness of the dress to decide if it’s too young for her.

    • http://twitter.com/mcterzakis marianna

It does look a little 1980s wedding, but her body is almost flawless, and I dig those shoes with the dress. They are an unexpected but welcome pop of a surprising color. In!

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Jesus. I know this is already out but cover up those feet, woman! When your veins show up in the full length version, you might want to have them looked at. The shot of her shoes made me throw up a little.

SJP is ropey. And wearing a tablecloth.

And reconsider the hair. She’s too old for her usual drab down “locks,” but this look belongs to her grandma.

    • Anonymous

I think the dress actually looks lovely on her body.  it’s everything else that looks crazy!  That hair, that makeup.  That makes her look old!

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

In for the most part; I do not like that long sleeve at all and as much as I adore gardenias, a corsage on a lace dress never says anything but prom or mother of the bride.  Oh, and I hate the shoes.
