Pairs Division: Smith and Lowe

Posted on September 07, 2011

We’ve featured Matt here a few times now because we absolutely love his street style, but many Bitter Kittens thought we were nuts for featuring him and nuts to think his ’80s-inspired casual looks were anything to get excited about. To which we say…

Matt Smith and Daisy Lowe at GQ AwardsMatt Smith and Daisy Lowe attend the GQ Men Of The Year Awards at The Royal Opera House in London, England. Daily Lowe wears a Jexika gown.

Shut your big face. He’s fabulous.

What a chic little alterna-couple they make.

HE: As we said, looks fabulous. Love the cut of that tuxedo and love him for not wearing something standard but not veering too far off the style reservation. Love the vest (yes, Brits: “waistcoat.” Happy now?), love the huge lapels, love the shoes, love the hair, and the hem on his pants isn’t perfect, but it’s damn close. Score: 9/10. The only reason he didn’t get a 10 is because he’s standing for pictures with his jacket open. Tsk.

SHE: Is breaking all of the rules. Well, our rules, anyway. See, we don’t love lace and we REALLY don’t love mermaid dresses, but somehow this looks chic and head-turning on her. Maybe it’s the relative lack of accessories; maybe it’s the messy hair (another choice we don’t normally love, but works here), or maybe the fact that she’s standing next to him and they make such a good pair (visually, at least). Maybe it’s just the big smile. Whatever the alchemy is, it’s working. Score: 9/10. We couldn’t live with ourselves if we gave a black lace mermaid gown with JBF hair a 10.

Combined Score: 9/10. Well done, Britlebrities.

What a good looking pair! I hate them.

    • Rand Ortega

Delicious. So wonderful to see such gorgeous, edgy young folk who are clearly having fun w/ their celebrity & each other. Her dress is gorgeous. He’s… well. He’s Matt Smith, ya’ll. & very soon that’s all that will be needed to be said.

    • Anonymous

      He looks like Crispin Glover.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Yes! Except that Crispin Glover would never wear that hairdo with a suit! :)

      • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

Exactly!  Every single time I see a picture of him, all I can think of is “McFly!”

        But better. MUCH better.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I love his shawl collared jacket and it doesn’t bug me as much that it isn’t buttoned since he has the waistcoat.  And she looks kinda supertrashyfabulous, which I totally dig.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

I don’t think the waistcoat would show up if the jacket were buttoned, so it kind of needs to be opened.

    • Anonymous

All I can say in regard to both of them is, “Oh, BABY!” and fan myself a bit.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I love that they can’t keep their hands off each other. Adorable. And not in the big cheesy “Look-at-my-female-wife” manner that Tom Cruise used to use while posing with Nicole.

      • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Yes! There is such an easy sensuality about them. Gorgeous!

    • Joe Ambroson

I don’t think his jacket has buttons….so he probably couldn’t close it if he wanted…

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

based on your comment I went back and looked really hard.  You can just barely make out one button right below the shawl collar.

        • Joe Ambroson

          ahhh…right you are…good eye.

        • Anonymous

Still though, I think this was probably tailored to be worn open.

    • http://fafafab.tumblr.com/ fafafab

I think you guys just a have a serious crush on him, just in the previous post you almost murdered a guy for using big lapels.. DOUBLE STANDARDS!!!!!

      • http://profiles.google.com/mercbubble42 Jessica O’Connell

Yeah, but they work on Matt Smith because he’s so quirky!

      • Patricia Biswanger

John Legend’s wide lapels were way shiny, almost like patent leather.  I think that was the problem.

        • Anonymous

Those particular lapels were Dizzee Rascal’s, I believe.

      • Anonymous

I went back to the other post to see who they almost murdered, and the only mention I could find of big lapels was this:

“Bradley Cooper: Those are some mighty big lapels and that is some mighty orange skin. Not a fan of double-breasted tuxedos but he looks good.” Somebody call an ambulance; a man is dead.

In all seriousness, is there another previous post you’re talking about? I just want to compare. I personally think Matt Smith’s big round unusual lapels are fun, especially combined with the waistcoat and the hair. The man is starting to replace David Tennant as best-dressed Doctor.

        • Anonymous

I especially think the big round lapels work well for him because he’s so lanky and angular in every way. They ad a different shape to what would otherwise be a very straight up and down look.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

I’m getting a bit tired of his Veronica Lake hair- it’s looking rather affected and bringing back bad memories of Milo Ventimiglia on HEROES.

      • Anonymous

First, I love you for invoking Veronica Lake.

Second, his hair is annoying, but so far he’s getting by with it (with me) because it seems to be his little trademark look, and I’ve only been aware of him for a couple of years. So I’m not over the edge. Yet.

Hopefully he will moderate or change the look before he becomes too old for it.

    • Darnell Usher

That swoop and flip thing going on in the front of his head is not cute at his age.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elaine-Lang/100000366510311 Elaine Lang

The thing about the hair is…it’s annoying.   Which makes you want to reach over and push it out of his face.   But, it also looks like it would be very nice to touch.   So, right after you imagine pushing it out of his face, you are imagining playing with it, and before you know it, Bam!   Everyone’s naked on the TARDIS.

      Oh.  Is that just me?

      • http://profiles.google.com/xxtriplestarxx Jennifer Durheim

Well, I know what I hope to be dreaming about tonight….

      • Anonymous

“…naked on the TARDIS”  I will never be able to watch Dr. Who again without this image in my mind.  Great belly laugh and all before my second cup of coffee.

    • http://profiles.google.com/mercbubble42 Jessica O’Connell

I feel like he should be wearing tails… but maybe that’s just because he was in the season premiere… Either way, they look great and his hair is ridiculously floppy as usual, which allows what seems to be his very playful personality shine through :-)

    • Anonymous

His hair is just awful…and give the boy a sammich-STAT!

    • Elizabeth Daniluk

Yes, they look good, but he looks like he’s about drop a deuce, or do a plié. Knees STRAIGHT, Smith!

      • Anonymous

He’s bow-legged.  Not much he can do about it.

I am a very, very recent convert to the wonderfulness of Doctor Who, and all these posts you keep doing on Matt is just amping up the fangirl factor. They both look fab, and I love all the smiling.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Love. Wish she’d worn a bracelet, but otherwise, FAB!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

This dress on this woman seems to confirm your maxim of “wear the right dress for your form/coloring/etc.,” but in reverse, yes? Ok dress becomes fabulous because it’s Her Dress.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

They’re pretty dang good at posing together, too, I must say.

    • Shawn Hill

Well, he’s clearly trying to show off that waistcoat, so I forgive the open jacket. This time. As for her, being stunningly pretty goes a long way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=19801927 Dennis Coyle

Not even gonna point out that he was most stylish man of the year?  Would have been a nice “in your face” to all those hater kitttens.

      Fabulous.

    • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Dr Skylaser

Totally with you, TLo, as far as the awesomeness of Matt Smith.  Personally, I think his street style is maybe nothing to get excited about (I’m not sure it’s creative, which’d be my definition of something to get excited about) but it sure as hell is SHARP.

Ah, a crappy morning made better by Matt Smith on T Lo’s site. Smith just makes me smile. I, too, wish he had buttoned his jacket. He is so slim, the lines would have been fantastic. As for Daisy, I think that is a A LOT of dress for that fabric, but she does look good.

Looove every bit of their looks.  I don’t even mind that long lock of hair because it reminds me of the goth kid on South Park and I heart those goth kids!

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

They’re both so damn pretty. They should be locked up.

I don’t have a problem with a black lace mermaid gown with JBF hair, so she gets a 10. I love his hair, I love his street style, and he’s a great Doctor (even though I’m not loving the show all that much right now). He gets a 10. Perfect score, y’all!

    • http://twitter.com/sylvia_warren Sylvia

There’s a scene where The Doctor turns up in opera gear, and I swear my ovaries exploded. He’s damn gorgeous.

i wholly agree w T’Lo. I’ve seen Matt at a cafe in Culver City. He totally looks like he walked out of The Smiths concert.

    • Anonymous

TLo, as always, I heartily concur with your assessment here.  They just pull it off.  UNRELATED, the Miss Universe Pageant is next week.  I will be praying that you cover it again this year – those posts last year almost got me fired for laughing in the office!

Don’t love her hair, but that’s minor compared to how gorge they look.  Loves!

    • MilaXX

I completely agree with the scores here. They make a great pair & I continue to love and adore my Doctor.

    • Anonymous

      Wow, he looks great!

    • Anonymous

He really does float your boat, doesn’t he? He doesn’t do a darned thing for me and I find that dangly hair silly and more than a little pretentious. I guess I’m old.  I agree she looks pretty here.

      • Anonymous

I suppose we’re in the minority because I feel the same way. He looks nice in the tux and she looks fab as well. But, I just find them as a couple annoying as all hell. Sorry.

        • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I don’t mind Matt Smith but I don’t find him sexily appealing in any way. Now David Tennant on the other hand….Phwaor. That’s MY Doctor.

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

See, I think Smith has great style — totally suits him in every way.  That said, I’m in total agreement on the Tennant vs. Smith.  I really like Eleven, but I’m ridiculously in lust with David Tennant.

    • Anonymous

ok with his clothes.  HATE  HATE HATE his hair and just do not like him.  She looks great

I love Matt Smith, to my complete surprise.  I agree, he’s stylish — he’s the best of the eighties without being costumey, and he makes me yearn for the stylish straight(ish) men of my youth.

    • Anonymous

I love him. I love the floppy hair, the – oh my lords – waistcoat. everything. all of it. the only thing I don’t love is the girl, because really, it’s so much easier to be in lust when the lust-object isn’t clearly in love with and wrapped around a thin stylish girl. But. hot damn.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

I want to show these pictures of Miss Lowe and the model to every fashion designer and point out to them just how much better their clothes look when worn by a woman with boobs and thighs and hips (sorta) and a bigass smile, not by a miserable looking stick figure.

    • Anonymous

Sort of Morticia and Gomez, young and glam.

    • Patricia Biswanger

Pretty freaking fabulous, both of them.  Someday I guess I am going to have to break down and watch Dr. Who, which won’t be hard since it’s on BBC America almost constantly.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

You really should… one of the best shows on television anywhere!  And it’s been on forever, so you can kill a good couple years’ worth of “nothing on” moments by watching old episodes on DVD.

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I love Matt Smith.  Love his personal style and think he has spectacular hair.  But…this new flip is edging ever so slowly up to Men Without Hats territory.  And while I still laugh at the Safety Dance video (seriously, even for the 80s that was a big WTF?) I don’t know if that’s the direction Matt really wants to go.

The tux is natty, though, and he knows how to wear it well.

    • Anonymous

Sorry TLo, but his hair is BAD!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NMLK23QK6C7NMLMVVYA5POXKJY WhiteMage

mmm doctor. get rid of the chick, though :D

    • Anonymous

I really dig him! He has a great sense of style.

    • Anonymous

I think it works because she looks like a chic ‘Elvira’…a little wompire-ish.  And that complements his style very well.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_A62HWRNLYLKQT5PDZ243UOKPMA Martha!

You guys love the hair? Really? Love his tux, everything about his look except for the silly emo hair.   Love her in that dress, it’s refreshing to see a nice big smile on the red carpet, isn’t it? Although thinking that a clutch would have been better suited to that dress than a shoulder bag, though it is a nice one.

    • Margot Brose

I’m sorry, but his hair still looks ridiculous. Everything else is fab, though.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I don’t find him personally appealing but I see the point. They look ridiculously cool together. For some reason I am thinking of Fred and Ginger. Though Fred never had the hair….

    • Anonymous

Where is her mother?  Someone needs to say it:  “Cut your bangs [sorry, Brits, "fringe"]; they’re hiding your pretty eyes!”

    • http://twitter.com/vintagegoddess just julie

I totally get the Matt Smith love.
      A. HE’S THE DOCTOR
      B. Cute in an odd/quirky/serial killer way and he does the whole hipster/punk 80’s better then most men.
      C. HE’s THE DOCTOR
      D. Bow tie
      E. Did I mention he’s The Doctor?

Besides Benedict Cumberbatch (and Bill Nighy) he is my favorite British dude.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

<3 Bill Nighy.  Never seen a movie with him I didn't like.

        • Anonymous

Always thought Bill Nighy would make a good Doctor. If they ever go back to an older man (which is unlikely as they seem to think that wouldn’t appeal nowadays) he would be perfect.

    • Anonymous

      Celebrits?

    • Anonymous

What? No. What?? I mean, her gown looks cute enough. And I LOVE me some Matt Smith; he’s smokin’ hot. But that tux. Ugh. He’s rail-thin, yet it does the impossible and makes him look vaguely dumpy. And why wear a waistcoat that can’t be seen unless you unbutton the tux, when the tux is going to look droopy and oddly proportioned when you unbutton it?

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Love it!  All of it.  Without a single reservation.  They both look chic, appropriate and yet true to themselves.  See, American actors?  Matt Smith is a quirky guy with a unique style and he STILL manages not to show up for formal events in totally trashy inappropriate clothes.  Some rules you can break and some you can’t — use Matt as your guide to telling the damn difference.  (Except for RDJ, your shoes should be dress shoes; and the only reason he gets a pass is because he’s been doing it for 30 years)

Daisy looks fab — it looks like her.  There aren’t many women who could make this work, but the JBF hair keeps it from going too conservative for her.  And I’m pretty sure in their case, that hair probably occurred naturally — you can’t fit AIR between the two of them!

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Oh, and the unbuttoned jacket?  Gets a pass because of the waistcoat — otherwise he’s not showing it off as well.

    • Aiste Griciute

I personally LOVE his 80’s inspired casual looks. Continue the love of Dr. Who, TLO! I encourage you.

    • A. Valera

O.K., thank you Matt Smith!  I’ve been so tired of explaining to the woman who cuts my kid’s hair that I want him to have an 80s skater cut, and they keep getting it wrong.  He basically ends up with a lopsided Moe.  Now I can just take a copy of this photo for his next appointment.

    • Anonymous

they do look adorable together, especially in that first picture, which shows the clothes to perfection as well as their hotness for each other.  but in the last two photos, it makes my nose itch just looking at his bangs hanging down.

    • Anonymous

i forgot to mention that i wore a vintage dress much like that on halloween, “back in the day”.  only it wasn’t lined and i wore it with nothing but a pair of black g-string panties and vampire teeth. those were indeed the days.

Ta for the link :) I see Mr Depp wasn’t for stopping.

Matt Smith always comes across well in interviews, and in Doctor Who Confidential. He seems like a genuinely nice guy. As have most of the people on Who. The Confidentials when it was Tennant/Tate/Barrowman looked like they didn’t get anything done for laughing and mucking about LOL!

    • Judy_J

I agree with you two.  They do make an attractive couple.  I love her dress, and he looks dashing in that tux.

    • Anonymous

If his jacket was buttoned we wouldn’t be able to see his fabulous vest.  I say give him a 10.

He does nothing for me and I hate his hair. I didn’t like it back in the 1980s and I don’t like it now. But he looks great in his tux. She looks lovely and has such a great smile. They do look good together.

    • http://twitter.com/Juliaismagic Julia

He’s is SO fabulous. I love his face and his hair and his fashion and his entire existence. I might be inclined to hate his girlfriend simply because she gets to be on his arm. That’s pretty biased, isn’t it?

    • Toto Maya

I used to call JBF hair “Saturday Morn’ Sorority Girl Hair.”  Loved going to Bob Evans with a hangover and seeing all the girls who forgot to smooth the back of their hair.

I’ve commented on your Matt posts before and I’ve always leaned towards douchey.  This?  This is one dapper emmereffer.  We can drop f-bombs, right?  Better safe than sorry.  But yes, DAPPER.

Just imagine Wills and Kate dressing like this. How exciting the monarchy would be!

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

That would be horribly inappropriate.  Being an actor with a model girlfriend gives you quite a bit more stylistic leeway than the future King and his Queen Consort.

Really? You don’t love his hair? Really?

People really can’t understand the whole different tastes thing? Really?

And they’re incredulous about it? Like they’ve never met anyone with a pn opinion different from their own? Really?

        Really?

    • Joyce VG

      His hair is glorious!

    • http://twitter.com/karenrubyleo Karen

I have to disagree, his head is such an odd shape and the haircut is just plain awful!

    • Anonymous

LOL! I’m pleasantly surprised. When I saw Daisy Lowe’s dress earlier today I expected it to get a ripping. I really like it, but it’s lace, it’s black lace, and over nude, it’s a mermaid shape etc. But here you go giving her a 9 and making me feel daft.

Anyway, she looks great, he looks good and he looks like the cat that got the cream.

    • Anonymous

From the neck down, he looks great. I REALLY hate the hair, though. He looks like a weasel.

      • Anonymous

OOOH posted before I read.  YES!  He does look like a weasel type varmint.   It’s just distracting as hell.

    • Anonymous

She looks like Barbara whats her name 99 from Get Smart – they look terrifical in the first shot esp

    • Anonymous

I am too distracted by that hank of hair hanging down.  It makes him look like a varmint of some sort – and what I really want to do is just come at him with my scissors and snip it right off.

Her outfit on the other hand is everything I usually hate but I really love the way she looks in it.  But I don’t know why.  Perhaps because she is lovely and seems really comfortable and happy wearing this dress.   In this sense, the gal could likely wear a potato sack and still come across as fresh and pretty.  But how does she sit down in a dress like that?

    • Anonymous

2 words: HAIR CUT.  I’m sorry, not seeing it here from him.  That hair is too pretentious, too retro awful, too contrived.
Her? Fab dress, fab make up, slightly less fab hair but I am ok with it.

God they look fabulous.  And they’re wearing things that NO ONE else is/can/will wear, which just makes the fabulousness all the more striking.

Love them. I think they’re more alternate than hipster, which is the term all my friends use for him. Gorgeous pair, they really complement one another.
