Michelle Obama in Chris Benz

Posted on September 16, 2011

We haven’t checked in on Miss Shelley in a while, kittens. Let’s see how she’s doing on the style front.

U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama attend the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 34th Annual Awards Gala at the Washington Convention Center. First Lady Michelle Obama wears a Chris Benz dress.

Love it. That’s her silhouette (as we’ve been saying for years now) and she absolutely can’t go wrong when she sticks with it. And wearing a dress like this with a high-waisted belt detail (as opposed to an actual belt worn high) is the best possible way to showcase the thinnest part of her upper body without making it look like her boobs are resting on the belt. The earrings are a bit on the matchy side, but it doesn’t really set off our Accessory OCD because the dress has a lot of color in it. Speaking of which, this kind of metallic isn’t particularly easy to pull off, but Shelley’s working it. The low-heeled black pumps are perfect and if you must wear a below-the-knee hem, that’s exactly where it should hit; just above the widest point of the calf. Love the center-parted hair. The makeup looks like a slight improvement; both her eyes and her brows look softer than we’re used to seeing. The only part we can criticize is the visible lip -liner, which pains us a little bit. Also, we’re a bit surprised not to see any of her patented cuffs or bangles, which would have worked well here. Still, she looks chic and as understated as one can be in a metallic strapless sheath.

God, she looks good. This should totally be a “WERQ”.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

I agree. This is a WERQ entry for sure. This is answering pretty much every criticism TLo has given Shelley. She looks AMAZING!

      • Anonymous

WERQ is right!  Perfect. Looking at her makes me feel happy.

      • Anonymous

I’m with you. It’s a WERQ. She looks fantastic.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

She looks fab. I love it that we have a first lady who wears Chris Benz. WERQ it, woman!

    • Sobaika Mirza

Women of color generally look fantastic in some metallic. She looks so chic, and I’m glad she stayed away from her usual patterned bangles. They would have tackied things up a bit.

    • Terence Ng

There’s something about those shoes I absolutely LOVE.

      • Anonymous

Maybe it’s that they are simple, and look graceful at that heel height – so odd, these days!

      • Anonymous

For one they are not putty colored platforms.  A simple black pump; you can’t go wrong.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BQ5HUQKDM6P5C5MQZ7WR726DFE Lucky

She’s lovely.  But the shoes scream middle management bureaucrat.

      • Anonymous

I have to agree about the shoes. They’re just so blah. But that’s a very small quibble for a FLOTUS who presents herself so beautifully.

    • Anonymous

Gee, I’m honored being the first to comment, but I’ve seen these pictures of her (and others) on another site, and while I think the dress per se is beautiful – I don’t think it looks good on her. It seems to cut her off just below her bust, and because of the highly placed belt/waist, and the fact the hem is below the knee, makes her look out of proportion (at least in other photographs). She looks 10% from the belt up and 90% from the waist down. I’m a know-nothing, but I think the belt should be lower and the hem higher. She’s allowed to wear skirts at or above the knee. That may have improved the overall silhouette.

      • Anonymous

I had the same reaction about the proportion. I do think that metallic green is a gorgeous color on her, though.

        • Anonymous

Whew, at least one person agrees with me! Thanks! And I agree about the color and fabric – it’s really exquisite.

          • Victoria Perry

Two people….I like the dress and she’s a beautiful lady, but I do not like the belt AT ALL

    • Anonymous

Wow she is amazing. She just looks perfect.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

LOVE. Not only does she style herself impeccably, she exudes confidence and, therefore, radiance.

    • Anonymous

Perfection. I hear what you’re saying about the bangle or cuff, but maybe she felt the dress had so much going on that she didn’t want to go over the top.

      • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I think a cuff would have been too much. Enough metallic in the dress.

        • Anonymous

I agree, a cuff and/or bangles would’ve cheapened the look. The dress has enough bling on its own. She looks lovely and quite comfortable in her own skin.

          • Anonymous

Exactly.  She has such lovely shoulders, arms, wrists and hands.  At least in this case, they are perfect without anything else.

she’s got the perfect accessory: a gorgeous man has his arm around her waist.

        • Anonymous

So true. And how awesome that we consider the President to be *her* accessory.

    • Anonymous

That’s just about perfect on her!

    • Anonymous

The dress looks great on her, but I especially love the hair. And her skin is flawless.

    • Anonymous

WERQ! one of her best looks, i think.

    • Judy_J

She’s beautiful.  Love the dress.  She looks happy and confident.

    • Anonymous

      Totally WERQing it.

Sometimes you can’t wear bangles with a metallic because they catch. Metallic dresses often have tiny metallic threads just WAITING to trap your wrist against your side.

    • Rand Ortega

Delish. Every detail. The arm candy is hot, too.

    • Anonymous

The only change I would make is to raise the hem just a skosh: to mid-knee rather than below. Otherwise, perfect.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

She looks FAB. Love the earrings with that dress.

    • Anonymous

A+ What a beautiful and intelligent woman.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

      Stunning.  Love it.  Love her.

    • Anonymous

      Two things:
       1) Unlike the starlets and others we look at critically for their appearance, this woman must be living under a tremendous amount of very real stress, you know, being the confidante of the man who is in the cross hairs of so many, and who has the weight of the nation on his shoulders.  That she can look so fresh and lovely under those circumstances just floors me.  It needs to be a WERQ at least, especially given those reasons.
      2) I am in love with her hair.  What great hair – and even though someone said her shoes scream Middle Management, her hair says Beauty Beauty Beauty all the way.

      • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

her shoes scream “I don’t want to be taller than the Commander In Chief” to me :)

      • Anonymous

I think her shoes are more like what we all wear maybe?  Let’s face it, real people do not go out in “hoof” shoes, right?  Well, the real people I hang out with. ;-)  I think we get used to the “red carpet” celebrities and what they put on their feet to walk that carpet.

Still the handsomest First Couple ever.  And a testament to American dentistry, which is still the best in the world.

After that photo of Maggie Gyllenhaal, this photo of Michelle Obama is a tonic for the eyes.  Love it.

I kind of wish that her hair was slightly parted on the side instead of dead center, but other than that, loveeee.

I’m actually okay with the hair.  I haven’t been so fond of her having the hair up and back lately, but this is actually a good look on her.  I was initially a little put off by the print, but because the silhouette is so there on her, I hit the buy-in point a lot faster than I might have otherwise.

It’s really the right note, and I think it works really well.

I really love what she has been doing with her hair lately! The over-product looks make her look extremely severe. She looks so lovely here!

Brillant!  She looks amazing in that dress that would be a hard fabric for quite a few women to wear.  It looks great against her skin tone.  I like the center part hair.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

I am glad she softened the eyebrows.  She was starting to look like a vulcan.

    • Anonymous

Really gorgeous – my only nitpick is that I think a necklace could have been a nice touch, but still, she’s totes fab.

    • Anonymous

She’s baaaaaack! And I’ve missed her so much–it was a long dry summer and I was wondering if some powers that be (can’t imagine who, but . . .) had passed some edict about having Mrs. Obama on your site and not giving equal time to the opposing party (u know political equality and all that) like, oh, I don’t know, (church lady voice) Saaatan? (read Sarah Palin (ha!!!) or M. Bachman (ha ha))
Oh, right, off the political commentary and in my neophyte fashion sense–gooooorjus, just stunning.

      • Anonymous

I was also wondering where she’s been -  until I read what TLo wrote about their coverage being based (to a certain extent) on number of comments and clicks each post garners. Perhaps she doesn’t generate the same reaction some others do (like the Special K’s). So – from what I’m gathering – if you want to see more Shelly O, as I do – let’s click and comment our hearts out!

        • Anonymous

Great suggestion! I never saw the comment about coverage. I’d write positive comments about her any time.

    • Anonymous

I’m wondering if she had to stand all night, that dress looks pretty stiff.   But she does look nice….standing.

    • Anonymous

She looks good. Great dress. I don’t know how she does it.

I have been missing her and hoping that she hadn’t pissed you guys off for some reason.  This is a very welcome return and she looks stunning.  I can see how that dress would not work for everybody but it certainly works for her.

    • Cheryl Kohs

Damn that woman has fabulous arms.

    • Anonymous

She looks very pretty in Chris Benz. It would have been great if she downplayed the earrings and wore a beautiful necklace to detract attention away from her chest and add some sophistication.

    • narita_rayna

      beautiful!

    • Anonymous

Oh, beautiful.  The dress and the hair–but mostly, just her.  Intelligent, fashionable, forthright, glowing.

    • Anonymous

She looks good. & i stand corrected – I would not have thought a completely off-the-face hairstyle could look this good on her.

      • Anonymous

Oh I sure hope visible lip liner isn’t coming back.  I never really got the hang of it so always looked absolutely ghastly!

    • Anonymous

I like the fabric and she is very stylish but I don’t care for this dress on her. I don’t know the proportions don’t seem quite right.

    • Anonymous

She looks gorgeous and 100% First Lady appropriate… in a strapless, metallic sheath.

She is GOOD at what she does.

    • Anonymous

Her hair looks FAB! And I love the dress. Patterned evening wear is such a breath of fresh air!

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Wow. I love her in that dress. Thanks for the breakdown.
It’s funny. I hate visible lip-liner because it disturbed me on my aunt in the 60s.

    • aussiegal77

      Love it!

I’ve been wondering when you would again be featuring our fabulous FLOTUS. I’ve missed her. She’s beautiful.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

So pretty! She has such a great upper body (arms, shoulders) that she can really pull off the strapless.

Love this! I’d love to see a bracelet of sorts, but it’s pretty much perfect. I was convinced no woman could pull off that hemline, but she has proven me so wrong!

    • MilaXX

I think she looks pretty. I’m glad she didn’t wear any bracelets because I think they would have clashed with the metallic in the dress.

    • Anonymous

I love that David Letterman refers to Michelle Bachmann as Michelle O’Bachmann.  LOLOLOLOL

    • Anonymous

Wow, I love this dress on her. It’s doing wonders for her shape, and of course, I love it when she shows off her killer arms and shoulders. Bravo!

I love a short and sassy hairdo, but this looks a little 1983 to me and I never love her shoe choices, but I guess since she’s such a tall woman to begin with, she needs to be careful with heel height, otherwise she might end up looking taller than her husband.

    • http://jessieliz.wordpress.com/ Super Red

I’m not really feeling this… neck up she looks great. And I love the fabric of that dress. But my eye is drawn directly to that belt detail, and then the dress just keeps going and going and going. I know she’s tall, but the proportions don’t seem particularly flattering. It may be that I truly hate hems that fall anywhere on the calves. I wish the hem was a little different or the belt was a a little lower or something… I just don’t like how it’s broken up her body. Hair and makeup are super pretty though.

    • http://diaryofaconsumerpunchingbag.blogspot.com/ Laura Ann Springer

I HATE this dress on her. It makes her Ass and Waist look Huge!

    • Anonymous

Her skin is so gorgeous. Her dress is stunning, and those shoes make me happy. WERQ, Shelley.

    • Anonymous

I hate the fabric of the dress and I HATE the earrings a lot, but she looks great. It’s that mega-watt smile. And she’s gorgeous and impeccable.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks lovely overall, though I disagree and think she isn’t QUITE pulling off that cool metallic.

Damn, the presidency sure does age men fast. Three years and Obama’s gone grey.

      • Anonymous

No, the more I look at it the more I think she is doing it. I think I was just reacting to that one picture at the bottom where it’s PARTICULARLY shiny.

Sigh. She looks SO BEAUTIFUL. Especially love the hair and the color of the dress. Wow.

She looks fabulous.  Love the softer eye makeup too.  Sometimes her eyebrows look like they were drawn on by a Disney animator.

WERQ vote from me.  She looks like a million.  Just wish that POTUS would represent as well as FLOTUS.  I’ve asked him to take me OFF his calling list.

LOVE the earrings! Surprised about the comments re: her brows — they look pretty severe to me! But overall, she is WERQing it!

    • Anonymous

I think she was probably scared of wearing any of her cuffs/bangles as the dress is so metallic but it would have been an improvement. Not to say she doesn’t look absolutely stunning here.

    • Anonymous

      WERQ! She looks gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

She looks lovely.  I would have liked to have seen some jewelry– necklace or cuffs.  I can see why she didn’t, but maybe something not-shiny, like wood or stone?

    • Anonymous

Love the dress but wish it was a little shorter and paired with different shoes. Still WERQ

    • Anonymous

Michelle looks fantastic!  Perfect shape and fit imo.  She doesn’t need any more accessories with this.  He skin looks amazing too.

Have to admit that I kinda hate the earrings though…

    • Anonymous

Liking the shorter hair and I want this patten for my xmas wrapping this year. All in all -  NICE!

    • Anonymous

The hair is great, a big improvement over those too-tightly-pulled back chignons, which IMO always made her mouth & teeth too much of the focus for her face.  The earrings are fab.  I love the color but agree with everyone who says it could have been shorter and still a “correct” length for the FLOTUS.  “Just above the widest point of the calf” might be the perfect place for a below-the-knee length but it doesn’t make that length perfect for her.  She’s far too young and lovely to wear dresses with such a dowdy hemline.  Up, up, I say!

    • Anonymous

Beautiful! Just look at her skin! That very same metallic print would look tacky on me but it just brings out the gorgeous color of her skin.

    • Lisa

Beautiful dress, beautiful hair, and her best accessory – she’s finally smiling!  Love it!
