Kate Winslet for V Magazine

Posted on September 20, 2011

We love Kate; really we do. Oh sure, we criticize her for her robotic red carpet appearances and privately we roll our eyes when she gives one of those (to us) breathlessly insincere “li’l ol’ me”  acceptance speeches every time she wins an award, but when she’s not up her own ass, she can be fun and give the kind of performances we like to watch. But after watching her haltingly walk around the Mildred Pierce sets for 30 hours with her brow furrowed like she had a migraine, we found ourselves wishing she’d do something fun and glamorous for her next starring role. In the meantime, we’ll take her dolled up in Liz Taylor drag.

After Liz died, the inevitable questions of who would play her for the inevitable biopic(s) arose and we couldn’t think of one current actress who might be able to embody her brio and ballsy, fleshy sensuality. Looking at Kate doing her best Liz here, we’re thinking she might be fun in the role if she really loosens herself up and doesn’t do that Kate thing of overthinking her acting sometimes. Get Daniel Craig to play Burton and that could be a fun picture. Make it happen, Hollywood. T Lo wants it.

Kate Winslet & Daniel Craig….inspired casting, TLo!  Kate does look amazing here, and seems to be channeling Liz quite well, especially in the b/w photos.

I wouldn’t have thought of Winslet either, but she looks does pull it off.

Why did they give her a beauty mark…next to her beauty mark?

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Because hers isn’t in the right spot for Elizabeth Taylor.

      • MilaXX

I think La Liz’s mark may have been further over, but I think it would have been better to just enhance Kate’s or photoshop Kate’s out.

        • glennethph

I don’t know but I kinda like it.  It’s almost like they’re acknowledging both Liz and Kate by leaving Kate’s beauty mark – that they’re very aware that Kate is doing Liz, if you know what I mean.

Very cool. I love these pics. I wish I could do my eye makeup like that without looking like a drag queen.

Much more effective than Michelle Williams as Marilyn. What a great casting idea you fellows had! Craig would make an excellent Burton.

I don’t know why Kate comes across as humorless sometimes, because I get the feeling that she isn’t. I’ve loved her since Sense & Sensibility so I have a soft spot for her, even when she makes some odd clothing choices.

Kate could make a good Elizabeth Taylor, but I wouldn’t pair her with Daniel Craig. I don’t see enough smolder there.

I would cast Scott Maslen as Richard Burton (though he’d have to work on the voice – the thing about Burton was that voice and I can’t think of anyone other than James Earl Jones who can compete with him on that. But Jones is too short).

Russell Crowe? He’s got the temper.

Kenneth Brannaugh could do the voice, I think, but doesn’t have the look.

      • Anonymous

We were discussing elsewhere – Michael Sheen is the only actor who could truly do the voice, he just doesn’t have the look. I really think it would have to be a Welsh actor to get that right.

These are surprisingly good. They were showing a her clothes on The Today Show this morning. Fantastic by the way. If they did a movie with the casting you suggest, I’d definitely check in.

Daniel Craig wouldn’t be able to get the voice. He always reminds me of Steve McQueen anyway. The only actor who could and can do the voice (other than Anthony Hopkins who did a fantastic Burton impression) is Michael Sheen, and he isn’t right physically.

Winslet looks pretty good in the photoshoot – not sure she’d be good casting in a movie though. Taylor was petite, it’s that storm out of a tiny package that was so gobsmacking.

      • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea Jody Lee

Agreed.  Craig’s voice is shockingly undistinguished.  Most of the Brits these days are trying hard to be one with the common folk, and their voices reflect that.

He’s just got an ordinary man in the street voice, and is quite quiet-spoken. There’s usually a totally different timbre to Welsh, Scots and Irish voices that English actors find really hard to capture. He’d look pretty good, but I don’t think that’s enough for Burton.

The first picture of Liz Taylor I remember paying attention to was in Life Magazine and was taken by Roddy McDowell. Her head was wrapped in a terry towel (pale green?) and she purportedly had no makeup on–just stepped out of the shower was the idea. I didn’t believe it about the makeup.. But the towel is not inauthentic.

        • Anonymous

I understand all that.  I just don’t get the towel with the heavy makeup and the jewels.  Especially the one with the brooch on the towel.

I don’t see it either, but maybe that’s because I think Liz had the most perfect face. Kate’s nose is all wrong (they even cut it off in pict. 3). I think it’s the eyebrows and the scarf that make us think of Liz, but that’s it for me.

    • Anonymous

All I have to say is, wow. This is a look that would never have occurred to me when thinking about Kate Winslet – her persona is so different – but it sure does bring out her features and make her look stunning.

Scarlett Johansen would be a better Liz.   Hands down.

Winslett is a big boned woman.   LIz was small boned with a rather delicate frame but wide hips and a full bosom.  That’s more the Scarlett Johansen look.

Plus I think Johansen is the better actress.

Martin Scorsese has optioned “Furious Love” by Kashner & Schoenberger & he’s supposed to begin filming next year. Gerard Butler is reportedly his 1st choice to play Burton. Catherine Zeta Jones, Rachel Weisz, Kate Beckensale, & (gasp!) Megan Fox are said to be in the running for Liz. For acting ability I pick Winslet, for looks (God help me) I pick Fox.

Catherine Zeta Jones would’ve made a good Taylor, maybe a few years ago though. She’s got the coloring and she’s got the attitude.

Crowe has been touted for Burton, although Burton’s brother wants Sheen – who would do it in a hearbeat if he was offered it I think.

Michael Sheen is amazing. He’s the only reason I saw “Underworld 2″. He was all buffed up to play Lucian the werewolf, very sexy & convincing. With the right coloring & weight training I think he would make an exceptional Richard Burton.
Russell Crowe? Really? Just don’t see it. Maybe for the hardscrabble beginnings they both share, but there was a deep intelligence to RB that RC couldn’t possibly grasp, let alone portray.

        • Anonymous

Oddly I think if we could ask Burton, he’d probably be quite happy with Crowe. Burton always liked doing the action roles and they certainly share drinking habits. But I don’t think RC could handle the voice at all, and I agree he lacks depth.

I really love Michael Sheen as an actor. He’s not like him at all physically, but then he’s not like a lot of the people he’s portrayed. He’s a good enough actor to blind you to the superficial discrepancies. He’s from the same town so the voice is not any problem. I’ve even heard him ‘do’ him in interviews.

          • Rand Ortega

Thanks for the inspiration, Corsetmaker. I’ve just downloaded “Richard Burton: The Legacy” narrated by Sheen. It’s quite fantastic. Their voices are very similar. Sheen is a quintessential actor, he loses himself in any role. He could do it. But my bet is still on Gerard Butler.

            • Anonymous

But Butler comes from Paisley and always sounds like he comes from Paisley, with an added mid-Atlantic twang in recent times. Although I feel I should support a local boy :) I’d actually rather see Crowe than Butler.

              Away to download that too.

            • Rand Ortega

They’re actors, CM. If Butler’s worth his salt he’ll study the voice, perhaps even hire a dialect coach to teach it to him. If Crowe gets it, I’ll just see Crowe (because that’s who he always plays). Physically, I vote Butler & hope he immerses himself in becoming Burton like he did w/ “Machine Gun Preacher”. Acting talent/voice, I vote Sheen.

The resemblance is there, but if not for these pictures, Kate as Elizabeth would never have occurred to me.

I’d rather see a film biopic with complete unknowns playing Liz and Burton. They were both so much larger than life that no one I can think of would live up to the hype. Although Cate Blanchett did a superb job as Katharine Hepburn. Personally I’d rather see talented lesser known actors, a real Welshman playing Burton and someone with a closer body type for Elizabeth. Sometimes as good as someone might be, it is difficult for famous actors to disappear into roles where they are playing other very famous people.

No no no, CLIVE OWEN needs to play Richard Burton.  I’ve been saying that ever since I first saw him in a movie.  Look at the eyes, and the imperfect complexion, and the hair.  He’s perfect.

      • Anonymous

Intriguing idea, He also has that semi-beat-up face going on.  Also a fine actor and easy on my eyes, anyway.

Oh, how I love your casting ideas!  The idea of this pairing is quite tasty.  And looking at these photos reminds me that I always thought people made too much of Liz’s eye color, when what was REALLY striking were her eyebrows.  The makeup person got them exactly right here.

    • http://www.lindamerrill.com Linda Merrill

Totally agree – she’s got something inside her that is enhanced by the light of Dame Elizabeth , unlike Michelle Williams who fades away in comparison to MM.

    • http://thememorexe.com memorexe

Liev Schrieber for Burton. I think Kate could swing Liz. I have to say I preferred her Catherine Deneuve http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2008/12/winslet200812

      • Saoirse Lee

Deneuve drag is way more her thing than Taylor drag. She has a similar stately, handsome air to Deneuve but she’s all wrong as Taylor, her features are too strong and she looks almost mannish (which she obviously isn’t).

Diamonds, a turban and a set of eyebrows do not Elizabeth Taylor make.

Oh my god, the animal print scarves. The turbans. The simple black bra. I am dying over here. And those earrings in the third photo?? Where is my rich lover who will buy those for me? Mommy wanty NOW!

love love love. T-Lo, i’m sorry but if you played for the other team, you’d love this lady. she’s a rare combination of earthy, raw, refined, intelligent, and smokin’ hot that few women these days possess. Did you see those eyebrows?

Not Daniel Craig — Russell Crowe would make a perfect Burton!

I love that now that Kate has won her Oscar, she’s all over the place with her acting roles, fashion choices, body size and looks (including this one, which is fabulous). It’s like she spent half her life (remembering that she started quite young) perfecting her talent and getting recognized for it. And now, she’s having fun figuring out where she’s going next.

Why have they covered up Kate’s existing beauty spot and then painted another one right next to it?  I find it very distracting.  Though say what you will Testino knows what he’s doing when it comes to portraits.

Oh just realised that they’re copying Liz’s beauty spot. Still finding it distracting though, think they should have stuck with Kate’s original.

Oh and Damian Lewis with dyed hair for Burton…

Dammit, it should be mandatory that all female celebs be dripping in jewels always! And if they can’t carry it off, they they don’t get to be considered celebrities. Kate looks fabulous here, but I miss La Liz…

Tom Hardy (Inception, lots of BBC productions) would be perfect for Burton! He’s a terrific actor and oozes sexiness… my ovaries melt every time I think of him saying “don’t be afraid to dream bigger, darling” in Inception. As someone said earlier Rachel Weisz would be a great choice for Liz. Her voice may be too low and husky, but she’s got the coloring, body type, sex appeal and acting chops.

She surely is gorgeous. There’s something about her eyebrows and her upper lip that is particularly divine to me.

Did anybody else besides me see her in an episode of Ricky Gervais’ “Extras”? She was hilarious and almost shockingly profane. I think she can be loose when it’s called for.

Winslet and Craig as Liz and Dick.  I’m feeling it, y’all!

My first reaction was: “Why oh why would they choose Kate Winslet to channel Elizabeth Taylor? No resemblance whatsoever!” Well…shut my mouth.

an art director should know not to cut a photograph off at the end of the nose. it’s arresting, yes, but it makes the viewer wonder about the nose & stop thinking about the subject.

From your mouth to the producers ears.. I’d watch a  Craig/Winslet production.

Daniel Craig as Richard Burton is a brilliant idea, TLo. Very pretty pics here.

Kate and Daniel Craig?? Swoon…sign me up!

      Beautiful.

Man, I don’t think this is a good look for Kate at all. My first thought on the “Liz Taylor: BUT WHO?” question is Rachel Weisz, for some reason, but I don’t necessarily think that actually makes any sense.

      • Anonymous

Weisz as Taylor and Craig as Burton would be a helluva combination. I’d watch that. I mean, they’re even married.

    • Anonymous

At the very least, I’d love to see Winslet and Craig in a remake of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”. Wait a minute, I hate remakes. Never mind.

A strong eyebrow and some kohl does not La Liz make.  Winslet can be pretty, and even a little sexy, but she doesn’t have the gaspworthy impact that Taylor had.  Those are some large-yet-tiny shoes to fill.

    • Presumptuous Insect

Damn, if only she had a Richard Burton by her side.  Anyone see The V.I.P.s?  He was so beautiful in that.

    • Lisa

Just beautiful, and totally La Liz.  I approve!

Benjamin: For God’s sake, Mrs. Robinson, here we are, you’ve got me into your house. You give me a drink. You put on music, now you start opening up your personal life to me and tell me your husband won’t be home for hours.

I’d watch that in a second. She looks great here – almost creepy how those photo-shoots make the person look SO much like the star. eery.

The point of this shoot was to capture the spirit of Liz Taylor, not to look EXACTLY like her in every possible way. Having said that I think she could totally pass for Liz Taylor. She has the energy and talent for it, as does Craig. I always thought Kate had a stagy acting presence…she’s more suited for theatre than films in my opinion. Not that she’s bad in films, I love most of her performances, but her energy and passion is so great that the screen can’t condense it at times. She’d work wonders on a huge stage. I’d love to watch her in a play so hopefully she makes it happen soon!
