In or Out: Marisa Tomei in Proenza Schouler

Posted on September 12, 2011

We’re a bit torn on this one because intellectually we know this is kind of a tough dress to pull off …

Marisa Tomei in Proenza Schouler

Marisa Tomei in Proenza Schouler

Marisa Tomei in Proenza Schouler

And yet there she is, somehow pulling it off. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a gorgeous design and a beautiful print, but that shape isn’t exactly effortless and Marisa, beautiful and elegant as she is, is not a 20 year old size 2 model. Strangely, the exagerrated hip seems even more so on the model, but perhaps Marisa and her stylist decided to pat it down a bit so it doesn’t look like she’s got panniers under there. The bronze and gold metallics really play off her late-summer (and thankfully, all natural) tan, and we absolutely love those shoes she’s wearing. They look to be the same as the ones on the runway, but the black works so much better here. Once again, though, we feel the need to point out that her somewhat earthy chic take on hair and makeup doesn’t really doesn’t work with a dress like this. That’s fine for breezy chic looks, but something this attention-getting probably needed a bit more oomph above the neck.

Vote Now!
IN! She’s a pewter, bronze and gold GODDESS!

OUT! It looks like a metallic Mexican blanket.

In other Minion Opinion News, poor Emily Blunt got raked over the coals for her salute to cameltoe, making her OUT.

The model also has it belted, which I think creates that flare across the hips.

All the lines and angles make my eyes spin a little, but I’ll vote In, but just barely. I like that the print could go Earth Mama really easily, but the dress manages to look sophisticated. Agree on the fabulosity of those shoes.

Wish she had worn some jewelry…any. She’s not even wearing earrings, is she?

Wish she had worn some jewelry…any. She’s not even wearing earrings, is she?

I think the dress would overpower any simple jewelry, and anything major would just be too much.  And I say that as a woman who feels naked if she leaves the house without earrings!

        • Anonymous

I agree about the dress being tough to accessorize. But when women wear zero jewelry to an event, it always looks to me like they just hurried out of the dressing room and into the limo. Even diamond studs would have made her look a little more finished. Again, VERY minor quibble.

          • mdesmondobrien

Some sort of studs would have completed this, I agree. But it’s still holy gorgeous, Batman! IN.

IN. I really like this dress, but I agree that the styling above the neck is slightly off. Everything else works in her favor, including the exclusion of the belt from the runway version.

Even though it looks a bit like a wool blanket in an Adirondack cabin, I give it an IN. For whatever reason, it looks way better on her than on the model and as you point out, the colors work great on her. She’s head to toe pretty in the outfit and the natural hair and make-up really look good in this instance.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I just realized that if Dog Blankets from PR had made it to the final 3, this could be a piece of her work.  Its got kind of pattern she likes, the over-lapping skewed shapes and all!  Even the leather look trim like a few pieces she had on her sample rack way back at the beginning of the season.

      • Anonymous

        Yes, I agree.

If they had they would have been keeping one of the only designers with a clear and unique aesthetic.  Imagine what she could have done with the avant garde challenge.  Maybe we would have seen something that actually WAS avant garde.

I like it a lot, although I’m not sold on the shoes with this dress.  The multiple straps around the ankles are too busy for the print, and draw the eye away from that gorgeous dress.

It’s definitely better without the belt, as the bodice has a smoother, sleeker line.

      Well-played, Marisa!

      IN.

      • Anonymous

I can’t make up my mind about the belt.

    • Anonymous

IN. I love this dress. An interesting print, interesting silhouette. I think I might like it belted better, but it still looks lovely. I think the black sandals look more elegant than the colored ones because they’re not competing with the dress so much. All in all, a very grown up look.

A casualty of trying to update the blog from inside the tents. Should be fixed now.

    • Jean Twaddell

I think she should have belted it like the model. Without the belt, it makes her a little thick-waisted, which Tomei surely is not. But still a resounding IN. Love the mix of metallics. Her hair is beautiful, but I think a little more color on the face would have been brought it up a notch.

    • Anonymous

Waist up and below the hips, looks good.  the hip area of the dress is just so widenning

    • Kelly House

The straps have been repositioned, and the whole dress sits higher on Marisa’s chest than on the model’s, pulling the waistline higher and making the dress flare out at a different place on her hips. Interestingly, the hem also hits lower on Marisa — just below the knee. I think it makes the whole look more chic. IN

      • Anonymous

I think the belt on the model is pulling up the extra length.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

The straps are slightly different, too.  On the model, they just go straight up, while on Marissa they come in toward the neck more.  I think that makes a big difference as well — the model version the straps seem too long.

      • Anonymous

Yes, and makes for a less boxy look on Marisa–more elegant, I think.

      • Anonymous

It almost looks as though she had the straps converted to a halter, which does make the top fit better.  All in all, I think she looks fantastic.  Definitely an IN from me.

    • Anonymous

I love Marisa Tomei and I think she looks awesome in this dress. IN

    • Anonymous

I don’t love this dress. The top is ok, but that bottom looks like she wrapped a Mexican blanket around her waist.
SHE, on the other hand, looks gorgeous. The tan and hardly any make-up works for her, and I like the sort of windblown hair. I do wish she would have put a touch of color on her lips, though.

    • Anonymous

why does marisa wear stuff that photographs to make her look so much more bottom-heavy than she probably is?  what is all this emphasis on skirt/hip and so little at the shoulders.  I’m not saying Alexis Carrington, but please – more up top. Out.  (although the color/tones look great with her sprayon tan)

      • Anonymous

I think that’s a real tan. No orange tones, and she’s got the genetic makeup to step out and get naturally tan in about 15 minutes. Damn her, ;-)

    • Anonymous

Beautiful.  It’s not the most flattering thing you can do to your hips, but it’s obviously the dress and not her that’s wide in that area.  A definite IN from me.

      • Anonymous

And I like the fact that it emphasizes the hips, in an ancien regime way…not that it actually looks like panniers, I just like it when getting dressed can be about something besides showing off what a slammin’ body you have ALL the ever lovin’ time.

      • Anonymous

Marisa ditched the belt and changed the strap length, thus shifting the proportions of the dress in her favor.  I cannot imagine what makeup would have been better.  Lip color doesn’t seem right….maybe a little rose on the cheeks?  I’m not sure.

Either way, I think she’s rocking the hell out of it.  IN

This is the best I’ve seen her look in quite a while.  This suits her to a T.  Just wish she’d gone with a more vibrant lip color, but that’s a minor quibble.  IN.

I think she looks fantastic. It’s riding between 40 year old, yuppie soccer mom on a date and interesting ease… but it works. And I love the colors on her olive skin. IN.

    • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

I think she looks fabulous.  The hair and makeup give it a summer breeziness.  She’s almost a WERQ in my eyes.  (think back to that green fringe dress Evangeline Lilly wore, that should NOT have worked, but that bitch looked amazing!)  Jewelry would have been good, some sort of bangle and earrings would have served her well.

I’m not seeing all the awesome you seem to be seeing. I like the exaggerated hip much better– on Marisa it just looks kind of messy there. I think the color plays much better against the model’s pale skin. The shoes look comfy, but the colorful version the model’s sporting make the whole outfit much more interesting. I can’t say I agree with you on anything about this look. OUT.

    • Anonymous

Wonderful fabric and colors. Interesting how a dress can be tweaked. The waist is now in a different place, and flattened instead of poofy w/o the extra hip fabric. The bodice is higher (thank god, because on any woman who doesn’t have a model’s elongated torso, her boobs would be hanging out as in the drawings of Phoenician women in my 7th grade Ancient Worlds textbook). I feel it was a mistake to take away the flared fabric around the hips because they nicely offset the asymmetrical hemline. She’s thin enough to have pulled it off, size 2 or not.
I preferred the colorful sandals as a more unusual choice, although I suppose the dress is unusual enough.
That “gotta pee!” stance though — why do they do that??? It’s so childish.

    • suzq

Oh, thanks for removing the belt.  So unnecessary.  And it’s one dress that actually looks better if you have real hips.  Hooray for that!  If I could do anything, I would take it up about an inch on the hem, but that’s about it.  Very nice!

    • Anonymous

She looks fab here!  I might have added some metallic hoops, but a big IN from me.

      • Anonymous

Yes. The color scheme (and the tan) would look good with a “back in town after summer at the beach coloring” maquillage. Plus I think it would have mitigated the issue some have with her casual hair.

Surprisingly IN, since I’m not a fan of the blanket dress but Marisa looks pretty damn hot.  Excusing the “I have to pee” pose.  A little more color on her face and lips would havea elevated this to a WERQ.

She removed the belt, so the hip seams don’t flare as much.  The shoes are great and I totally agree about the styling, esp. the lack of any jewelry at all.  The accessories people must be fighting the urge to cut themselves as this season of jewelry denial drags on and on.  Anyway, she is definitely looking good in this.  IN.

IN. I generally hate tanning, real (damaging) or faux (ugly), but admit the skintone and dress colors work together beautifully here. The shoes help keep it out of dogblankets territory, despite the low-volume makeup and hair. I also love the small but effective changes the seamstress/stylist made to suit the wearer. Very interesting without being unflattering and a great choice for late summer.

It’s much better without the belt. It looks sleek whereas the catwalk version literally looks like a blanket tied at the waist. The bodice sitting that bit higher helps to. In, although it’s not my taste particularly.

IN! I think she looks faboo tip to toe. I think her breezy hair and makeup is what is making this look work so well for her – it’s kinda who she is. She is totally rockin this look. I love huh! She’s done amazing work in her career, but I always go back to that scene w/Joe Pesci – THE CLOCK IS TICKIN!!!

IN. In.  Inny- in-in.  This dress was featured in the SJP editorial in the August Vogue and it caught my eye there though styled very differently (they had SJP wear a long sleeved black t-shirt under it). I just think it’s stunning and very chic and I love it on Marisa.

Love the shoes.  I disagree about the hair.  The dress, even with the heavy looking metallic fabric and the and carefully-arranged lines of the skirt,  actually manages to look like a  sundress, particularly at the neckline.  Easy breezy summer hair goes well.

i agree, this thing needs a belt and badly.  also, the model’s dress has the opening at the bottom slightly to the left and marisa’s is dead center.  could be the way she’s standing.  whatever it is, dead center doesn’t work.  i still say IN.  she’s doing a pretty good job of a very difficult garment.

IN.  I like the fact that she and her stylist had the good sense to NOT use a belt on this, since I think that is largely what is causing the model to look hip-heavy.

    • Anonymous

Ugh. OUT. It pains me because I think she looks stunning everywhere but the dress. I do like the metallics on her but it is really too ugly to reward. And if someone that gorgeous can’t pull it off, it is a definite out.

IN!! It looks much better on her than it does on the model — the top on the model is so awkward and low, and the straps don’t do much for her.  I like how the straps are more angled on Marisa.  And I LOVE the shoes — I’m breathing a huge sigh of relief for a beautiful strappy sandal — perhaps it signals the end of the horrible clunky hoof shoes and dull silly putty platform pumps??

IN.  She looks great, despite a couple very minor issues that have been pointed out by T&Lo & the rest of the commentariat.  I think the reason the hips look different is that she’s wearing it much higher up on her torso than the model, and sans belt, so the flare that’s so prominent on the model, and is exaggerated by the belt,  is located where Marisa’s actual hips curve and is de-emphasized.

It just looks so stiff and heavy. Definitely looks better on her than on the model, but that hip area is still problematic. I struggled, but I’m coming down on the OUT side.
