In or Out: Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Van Noten

Posted on September 16, 2011

Wake up, Maggie, we think we’ve got something to say to you.

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Van NotenMaggie Gyllenhaal at the “Hysteria” press conference during 2011 Toronto International Film Festival in a Dries Van Noten dress.

And what we’ve got to say is this: How is it that you turn every single thing you wear into looking like something your grandmother would wear? Don’t get us wrong, we think this dress is pretty unattractive no matter who’s wearing it, but she has this odd (for someone who takes fashion risks) ability to instantly frump up (or down, we suppose) anything the minute it hits her skin. We have the utmost respect for her for going out on a fashion limb consistently, but she never seems to understand that if you’re going to wear something with a little edge to it, then you need to reflect that in the styling. Standard pumps and 40-year-old bank manager hair is not the way to go with a dress like this. We’re not saying crazy shoes and hair would have made the look prettier but they would at least be consistent with the style of the dress.

Vote Now!
IN! It’s late September and she’s rocking that edgy shit!

OUT! Oh Maggie, I wish I’d never seen this dress.

There was much backing and forthing in the discussion of Jessica Chastain’s bumblebee gown, but ultimately, the vote came down to OUT.

Out.  that dress is so hiddy.

    • Anonymous

I’m pretty sure that the dress is just ugly. Is there an Emperor’s New Clothes problem with Dries Van Noten or Maggie? Was no one honest enough to tell either of them?

I know she’s willing to be edgy, but honestly, she’s never looked better than she did in Nanny McPhee Returns.

    • Anonymous

OUT. the dress is tired and she is tired. And sad. It’s a gloomy morning in el lay. seeing this is hazardous for those whose physical constitution leans a little on the “low” side.

quick quick, suggestions for a counter visual!

I’m just happy she is wearing a bra for once.

      • Meredith Blixt

        That is a plus.

I actually don’t mind the dress that much. It’s the hair that makes it an OUT from me. Yikes.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PVIY3NBCZJAJNFWDBCWG2DMKL4 Jen R

It’s not obvious that she is. She needs to go shopping for one that doesn’t make her look like she’s got saggy old lady boobs. Lift the girls up, for crying out loud!

You think? Then she needs to get fitted for one that fits her and provides some support. The training bra isn’t working for her any more.

I would like to see the dress she’s wearing under the one with the floral thunderstorm print.
That one actually looks quite promising. And works with the shoes.

what’s up with the odd proportions lately? Leighton Meesters in McQueen was another one, but there were others I can’t remember at the moment: a top that ends mid thigh combined with a long(ish) skirt. Grandma proportions are nearly unavoidable.

    • Anonymous

Oh dear, No. If it barely works on the runway on a model it should not be worn to a publicity event. OUT.

It’s late September and I really should be back in school…
This song is going to be in my head all day now. :)

      • Anonymous

Yup. Though I get to hear live music later on today, so it won’t stay with me as long as that Gordon Lightfoot song did.

        • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I hate Rod Stewart. So. Much. I especially hate this song. I specifically asked the DJ not to play it at my wedding. Which is funny, because someone actually did request it. That’s how much I hate that song.
So what music are ya gonna see??

          • Anonymous

It’s a musical embarrassment of riches – 3 day, multi-stage festival (ACL Festival in Austin) – every day you hear someone entirely new to you who is wonderful & miss out on someone you wanted to see.  I think today’s high point is going to be Mavis Staples (though I’ll hear Big Boi, Kanye West, maybe a new-to-me singer called Santigold and who knows who else?). Tomorrow is more techno-electronic & I’ll have to choose between Chromeo & the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, but ends with Stevie Wonder & Sunday starts with genuine gospel  and bounces between Columbian electronica, country influenced folk and indie pop. Really, it’s overkill – and I have to confess I skip some of the headliners – but it’s a wonderful hot, sweaty 3 days. Which begins as soon as I can leave work. (Tick. Tick. Tick.)

The rest of the year I stay home and read the listings for the clubs and the reviews for the concerts.

Gahhhhh! Jealous! I’ve been twice…. before I had kids. Damn kids. Hope you’re having a great time.

      Out. Wayyyyyyyyyy out.

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

Sometimes I get the feeling Maggie is just messing with us.  It’s as if she’s saying, “I’m in a movie called ‘Hysteria,’ and I look like I’ve just downed massive amounts of psychotropic drugs.  Heeheeheeheehee!”  But as smart as the girl is, that dress is still abysmal.  OUT!

    • Anonymous

That dress is so ugly. And she looks so old and frumpy. I’m 47 and I look younger than she does.

    • Anonymous

      So heinous – OUT.

    • Anonymous

It’s her posture.  She’s seems to be incapable of standing without being hollow chested and slightly knock kneed.  It’s still a pretty ugly dress, and it’s an Out.  The model only makes it work by putting her hands in the pockets and strutting the hell out of it.  Maggie’s just not one of nature’s strutters.

      • Anonymous

So true – I was just thinking that the hands-in-pockets walk does a lot for the dress.  Still, OUT.

        • Anonymous

We think alike!  When I saw her, I immediately channeled my mother:  Stand up straight!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=719457376 Molly Adrianson

Maggie does have consistently bad posture, it’s one of the things that makes her so recognizable to me. So yeah, she CANNOT rock a weird dress, you gotta stand up straight, shoulders back, chin up and slick back your hair to even HOPE to make this dress work for you. and even then…it’s still an ugly dress.

When, I first saw this, I thought, “Maggie is her mother’s name too?  Wow, she has great legs for…oh.”  The dress, makeup and hair together are all incredibly aging.  Is there a recasting of Golden Girls I don’t know about?  They have a history of dressing actresses up to look older than they really are…

    • Anonymous

Yeah, I have never been really fond of the way this girl presents herself. She’s all droopy boobs and bad posture and spinning class hair. She’s just so schlumpy all the time; I don’t understand. Why does she cultivate this perpetually disheveled look?

    • Anonymous

She’s quirky and all and I also like that she takes risks – but that dress is neither risky nor quirky. It is ugly. Out.

    • Anonymous

      OUT.

This dress is a predictable Maggie G. choice. It’s got exactly her kind of Holly Hobbit on Acid weird.

This dress is awful.  But I agree that better hair, at least, would have helped.  The hair is bad.

But man, that dress is uglyl

OUT – ugly dress and bad hair

    • Anonymous

Because the top of this dress–which is not great anyway–is so dark, it really needs a blond to pick up on the lighter “fireworks? lightning strikes?” in the dress.  See, e.g., the runway model.  Nonetheless, bad look all around.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Yeah… I want to love her because she does take so many risks, but somehow she never makes them work!  For one thing, she’s a tall willowy woman and there is NO EXCUSE FOR THAT SLOUCHING YOUNG LADY!

    • Anonymous

How can I say this without sounding as if I’m insulting Maggie, because that’s certainly not my intention. She’s not a classic beauty in the Hollywood tradition; she has a friendly face and smile. She projects an aura of morality and old-fashioned values. She’s the sympathetic neighbor you’d like to have–someone who’d bring you chicken soup to cure anything from a cold to a broken heart. Yet she loves to take chances with edgy design. The clash between the image she projects (to me) and her own sense of style creates a chasm that’s often impossible to bridge. So I’ll just let her be whomever she wants to be as long as she keeps delivering that chicken soup. IN.

No, no no, Maggie!  I’m whispering in your ear, dear.  Out.

She’s such a pretty girl. Why would she do this to herself? I don’t necessarily mind the dress, but the entire effect is just unflattering. Out.

    • Anonymous

I have a general question about her: does she ever smile with her teeth?  All her pictures look like her lips have been sewn shut as if she’s got some heinous problem with her teeth and would rather die than show them.

    • Vaniljekjeks

It’s the flattened boobs that ruins this look.  Someone needs to go to all of these people (Christina Hendricks, Maggie, so many others), and properly fit them for a flattering bra.  It can change lives.  Maybe it will be me.  I should really quit my job and start measuring famous boobs instead.   Out, by the way.

    • MilaXX

OUT! She looks like a little old lady. If she’s going to take fashion risk, she needs better hair and makeup. Not sure what could have saved this dress, perhaps a belt, lose the sleeves? Definitely a shorter hemline. Maggie’s wearing it below the knee and the model has it just above.

    • Anonymous

      OUT. LOUDLY.

    • Anonymous

The length doesn’t help on her.  On the model (who appears to have ludicrously long legs)  it hits a few inches above the knees whereas on Maggie it’s kneelength, the most bank managerish length skirt length there is.

    • Anonymous

What the heck? She looks SO OLD! Fire the hair people! Fire the make-up people! Hell, Fire Everybody and then burn the negatives.

    • Anonymous

I know the phrase “got dressed in the dark” is overused, but that is exactly how she looks to me — like a bank manager who got dressed in the dark so as not to wake her husband who works third shift.  Thankfully, she waited to get to work to put her makeup on because at least that looks attractive.  If only she hadn’t brushed her hair in the car.

      OUT.

    • Haley Buchanan

OUT.  It looks dowdy on the model and dowdy on Maggie.  And, would it kill her to actually smile?

    • Anonymous

Out, for all the reasons you mention. You need to bring a certain fierceness to a dress like that, and she ain’t doing it.

it is a pretty ugly dress, though.

    • Anonymous

Very out. The dress could have been kind of cool with different styling but oy, the frumpy hair, the make-up, the shoes… not good. But thanks for the Rod Stewart moment, boys. LOL’d.

Out.  Again. What’s crazy is that MG is about 5 foot 9, but she often looks dumpy. Is it because she’s normal people (rather than Hollywood) slender?  And, MG is not big on doing a lot by way of styling – she simply puts on a dress, dresses it up with red lipstick and goes. She needs to find designs for the woman who wants to wear something edgy, but doesn’t want to put in an extraordinary amount of effort on the rest of the package, and who isn’t a size negative zero.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PVIY3NBCZJAJNFWDBCWG2DMKL4 Jen R

I think it’s her posture that makes everything look so terrible on her. She hunches her shoulders, practically creating an old-lady humped back, which has the effect of a caved in chest. And she needs to buy better bras that don’t let her boobs just hang there. I mean, I know she’s not got a huge chest but she needs to lift the girls up a couple inches – letting them sag like that makes her look old. I’m about 6 cup sizes bigger than her and my bras put my boobs where they belong.

Hate the dress, hate the hair, hate the makeup.  Bright lipsticks can also be really aging when you keep your face welded into that mommy-is-trying-not-to-scream-at-daddy-in-public rictus.
Seriously, I think she’s the only person I can think of who gives Christina Aguilera a run for her money in the Add-a-Decade sweepstakes.  By which I mean, OUT.

Homegirl is only 34. The first picture makes her look around my (quite wonderful) mother’s age.

Awkward lighting, maybe? Poor lipstick choice? Poor makeup in general/aging hair choice?

I don’t particularly like the dress but I think it would be decidedly less frumpy with some better styling. And better shoes.

I’m trying so hard to fit in with my peers but I just can’t, so I’m going to say it: I like this dress. The only thing wrong here is the hair, and it is really, really wrong. She is pretty in an unconventional way, and her downward-trending facial features are dragged even farther down by this awful hair. She needs short hair to bring the focus up around her eyes, and with this dress it should be choppy and maybe even spiky. Oh Maggie, call me next time before you go out looking like a hag. I’m here to help.

Suddenly, two moments in the 80s came back to me. 1) Looking at a schoolmate’s mom in her 60s hairdo and 70s dress and realizing exactly what frumpiness is, and 2) hearing one of my favorite dance tunes *cue music*, but to the words “frump up the volume, frump up the volume, frump up the volume…”

      Sorry, Maggie, but O U T.

OUT.  Looks like someone ran out of fabric at the bottom of the dress and replaced it with something else.  Her hair is really aging, looks like it’s from the 1940s maybe.

I’m always rooting for Maggie Gyllenhaal to not look like a frumpy mess. Unfortunately, she looks like one here. However, I can’t think of a single person who wouldn’t look like a frumpy mess in that thing.

OUT.  I think the waistline is cut way too high for a woman with any curves at all…this is what’s reading ‘frumpy’ to me about the dress itself.  The styling just made it worse.

I think this look *might* have been saved if she’d gone for some kind of updo. I am really not liking the dress though. It seems *too* clashy to make any kind of sense when worn in the real world. Separately, I think these are both intriguing prints, but together they’re too busy and make me just want to look away. Out. (And I’m thinking I’d say that no matter who wore the dress.)

How did that dress ever get to a runway? Do Dries and Van Noten have no one to tell them ‘STOP!!’
My internal dialogue says that Mags’ hair looks like that for a part. Like Brad Pitts. I have zero evidence for this claim. My internal dialogue is just there to make me feel better.

I am going to say IN because I don’t have a good reason to say otherwise. She’s true to her aesthetic if nothing else. She manages to find couture frump.

I’d like to see a whole dress made with the bottom elements.  It is intriguing. The top part is boring and being paired with a funky bottom 1/2 doesn’t save it from being boring.  That’s the designer’s fault, not Maggie’s.  But Maggie chose to wear it and for that, I vote OUT. (and she paired it with boring shoes – ugh)

I don’t think the dress is THAT bad, I think it’s her. She looks old all the time, like a tired working mother who is trying her best to get everything together. Perhaps if a blonde wore it or somebody with more spunk like Agyness Deyn, it may work…
