In or Out: Lily Collins

Posted on September 28, 2011

Lily obviously read our post yesterday, saw what we had to say about her hair, burst into tears, and then took our advice. Such is the power of we.

Lily Collins in Chanel at 'Secret Identity' PremiereLily Collins attends the Paris Premiere of “Abduction” in a blue taffeta dress paired with Christian Louboutin heels.

But we just don’t know about this whole look. First off, she looks infinitely prettier with her hair up, but doesn’t she have kind of an egg head now? The dress looks great from the side, but from the front or the back, it looks kind of heavy and over-embellished, no? And like it could have been fitted better up top?  The glittery bow on her chest seems totally unnecessary. Still, our first impression when we saw these pictures was “Oh, she looks so much better than she did the other day!” And since we said we liked that dress, we suppose we’re duty bound to like this one too. You, however, are not duty bound to do anything but express your bitchery.

Vote Now!
IN! Are we sure she’s not Joan Collins’ granddaughter? Because she is serving up ALEXIS REALNESS!

OUT! Too precious and overdone.

Voting on Hailee Steinfeld’s bumblebee look is still wide open, head on over there and tell us how horrible we are for subjecting a 15-year-old to our judgmental bitchiness.

Oh, no no no. I like the other look MUCH better. This looks way too much like my sister’s circa-1991 prom dress. OUT.

    • Nancy Abrams

Don’t need to add anything. Sara has said it all. OUT.

  • marlie

Hair & makeup are good, and she’s really pretty, but the dress is a big old OUT.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know who she is or how old she is, but she looks very young, and this look is way too mature for her. There’s also something just droopy looking about the top. And I don’t know what her persona is like, but based on this picture I’m getting a young Liz Taylor vibe.

    • Anonymous

The first picture, she looks just like Liz Taylor, was kind of spooky. Out because she is way too young for that heavy over embellished dress, although I love the color.

    • MilaXX

Yes if we are continuing the casting vibe, she looks a little like Liz circa national Velvet years.

  • Anonymous

Out. It’s matronly and boxy. The dress could be pretty if it was tailored to her figure.

It is not the premiere of “Secret Identity,” boys, it’s the premiere of “Abduction,” with its French name. Oh, those French and their names.

  • Anonymous

Much prettier!  She really didn’t need all that heavy dark eyeshadow.  Her eyes look amazing.  The dress does have fit issues up top (looks too big!) and the bow is excessive…but overall I like the look, especially from the side.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  Jennifer Connelly says you’re doing it wrong.

And you look like Alexis Carrington’s little sister in that dress.

  • Anonymous

This is a mother-of-the-bride outfit with the sleeves chopped off.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

My thought was “the David’s Bridal Urban Collection.”   out.

  • Sara__B

Out, but not for the reasons you stated. The dress doesn’t fit her lithe young body properly, and the style and length are making her look much older than her 21 or 22 years. Much too matronly and heavy for this slight young woman.

  • ali meowmeow

Lord. Between her pretty young face, the over-embellishment, the shape, the fabric, and the lapel/halter combo (can never get behind that one), I’m kind of expecting a sparkly pair of sequin shorts underneath and a tap routine. Out.

  • Anonymous

A pretty girl.  Is the top supposed to be buttoned? I feel badly calling out on a kid, but, OUT.

  • Anonymous

This is one of the least cool outfits I have ever seen. Poor girl.

  • aussiegal77

    Not feeling this at all….OUT.

    I think it’s just me…..but I’m getting a heavy Liz Taylor vibe from here….they could be related…

  • Sobaika Mirza

OUT. Needs a new hair/makeup person.

  • Allie Carter

The dress is AWFUL. Too overdone, too 80’s, too old for her, too everything. OUT.

  • { edi } ilovetrash

the dress is awful. in fact, not only is it awful, it’s hard to figure out the reasons for it’s awfulness. it’s kind of like if betsey johnson were forced, thirty years ago, to make dresses from the remnants left on the floor at the end of a season of project runway, one in which they havent let them pick up or put anything away after various unconventional materials challenges plus a Tribute to the Dallas Dynasty, or something.

  • Anonymous

    It’s oddly heavy.  She’s pretty.

  • Anonymous

Oh, her hair and makeup are so much better, but the dress proportions are just all wrong – Honey, This is Not Your Dress. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Good GOD that dress is ugly.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

I know right?? It’s like the very definition of aggressively ugly. OUT

  • Anonymous

I think it’s cute.  I don’t like the details overmuch, but it’s a little interesting and she looks pulled-together.  IN.

  • Anonymous

Looks matronly. Both the dress and the hair.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  Lily, it’s a hideous dress. It’s just not YOUR hideous dress.

  • Anonymous

OUT. I’m not in love with the gigantic frontal collar turning into a bare back thing that seems to be sweeping the nation. It’s just odd and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it done to great effect. She’s quite pretty and I like the hair and make-up.

  • Anonymous

I am duty bound to say that in keeping with the “let’s cast biopics” trend, when they make the one about Liz Taylor where Kate Winslet plays her as a grown up, Lily should play her in her “National Velvet” years.

And I’m going to call her look OUT……just too much bad going on here to forgive.

  • Manon Eileen

She looks great herself, but that dress is awful. Out.

  • Kiltdntiltd

I’m going with an OUT here.  I’m not sure this is her dress. First off the bodice fit is wacky and loose in all the wrong places.  Secondly, the proportions of the details have not been adjusted to offset her tiny size, only making her look shorter as a result.  And it all just seems too fussy and overladen with styling details. Bow, beadwork, peplum,  frilled edges and those weird and pointless closure things on the front.  What are those even for?

On the plus side, hair and makeup are a huge improvement, and the color is terrific for her.

  • Anonymous

Out…the dress is heinous..too much going on there.  And bless her heart for listening to you guys :-) and pulling her hair up, but I don’t think it is a good look.  Definitely egg-head-ish.

  • Anonymous

Out. There is a glitter bow on the front.

  • Anonymous

It’s very 90’s sitcom bridesmaid with the bows, beading, and shiny navy. So much an Out.

  • Christina Brennan

I saw this over at the Fug Girls and I gave it an OUT over there, too.  I’m actually surprised at how nice this looks from the side and back, but the front is ill-fitting.  It reminds me of this quote from 30 Rock- “Top front? My god Lemon, that’s your worst quadrant!”

  • Dee B

She looks a a kid playing dress up in her grandmother’s clothes.  Pretty but OUT.

  • Anonymous

Out. Too Lucille Ball for me.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  Why the hip shoulderpads?  WHY?

  • Anonymous

so obviously trying for audrey hepburn.  and falling short of jennifer love hewitt, pobrecita.  out.  (although I want to ‘in’ her for not being Paz.)

  • Adriana Blair

That dress…edges look unfinished and the material looks cheap. And then what is that colar? Yeah, above the neck is better, but I still prefer the other look.

  • Sorana Tarmu

Total egghead – I prefer the cocker spaniel look. Ill-fitting dress. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Out.  The dress is overdone, too old.

  • Sara Parker

I think her hair is much more flattering this way, but the dress is unforgivable. OUT

  • Terence Ng

I hate to say this, because my own eyebrows are far from perfect, but…her eyebrows are really bothering me. I think she really needs a tweeze. The fin separated hairs lingering in the inner ends of her brows keep making me doubletake that she has a unibrow worthy of Helga Pataki.

  • Phillip Wilde

This hair combined with her already strong brow and a poorly-fitted structured top makes her look like one of Olivier’s NYFW models.

  • Mari Rose

    Strangely dowdy. OUT

  • Megan

Out. I don’t even know what’s going on with this dress that looks like it could be a skirt suit.

  • JaneM

Out. When a nice looking young lady looks like a dumpy old frump, that’s an out.

    • JaneM

And I should know, because I am a dumpy old frump.

  • Sammi M

I’m going to say “Out”. It looks like a bad “Mad Men” costume.

  • Judy_J

The overall look is not appealing to me at all.  And with her hair up, her brows look too heavy, veering into Frida Khalo territory.

  • Anonymous

Good hair, horrid dress. OUT. (And for the record, I like her eyebrows.)

  • Anonymous

Ack! No, just no. Honey, you’re too young to be going for the Alexis Carrington look. The cheaper version. Cute girl but this just won’t do at all.

  • Laura Schultz

Oy. OUT. Too old, too shiny, too much froo froo. The collar is weird. Hate the shoes.

  • Anonymous

Who cares? Where is he and what was he wearing?

  • Emily Smith

oooo do NOT like that dress at all.  and the shoes are a total fail with it.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

Hideously ugly dress. She looks more put together, but the dress is atrocious. One loud out from me.

  • Anonymous

It’s just all a little too much and that bow pains me. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Girl is serving up some Alexis fierceness!!

  • Anonymous

Hate that dress! The peplum looks uneven and way too 80’s that and it’s got a weird sailor vibe, the bow is just stupid. It’s a great color, maybe not the best color for her but this is definitely OUT.

  • Anonymous

OUT. The proportions of the top make her look pear shaped. And the hair is too severe. Ages her 10 years.

  • Anonymous

OUT and then some THAT is GAWD awful!  Its like something Hilary Clinton would get talked out of wearing if we were lucky. EW!

  • Anonymous

Out. The dress is waaaaaaaaay too 1980s corporate cocktail party for me. The hair is not an improvement over the cocker spaniel ‘do from the other day. Sorry, Lily, you’re a lovely girl, but go home and start over. This time with a new stylist.

  • Anonymous

Out.  The dress just isn’t pretty, or cute, or interesting.

Her hair and make up are better than yesterday and the dark blue color looks better than black.

  • Pinup Ghoul

She really is a beautiful young lady, isn’t she? She looks flawless from the neck up, but I think a more playful garment would suit her better. This one looks heavy and drab.

  • Anonymous

In for the overall look (especially hair, makeup and shoes).  The dress is a little fussy (too many elements in the top), but overall I’ll give the look an in.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

It just doesn’t look like either the dress or the shoes fit. Her poor little toes are hanging out of the shoe and the top of the dress is just hanging off her. Her face gets an in, but the rest is out.

  • M

This looks like Helena Bonham Carter’s dress. OUT.

  • Anonymous

OUT. I am shopping online for a Mother of the Bride dress for myself, and this looks like many of the dresses I have seen. Baaaaad!

  • Danielle West

Out.  Don’t like the hem and the dress just seems too mature for her.  Would love to see this on Helen Mirren.

  • Grace Ritt

OUT. Poor gal. You can’t cut a few feet off an ’80s prom dress and actually wear it.

  • Anonymous

OUT. Yes, she looks much prettier form the neck up. But, no, no, no o0n the dress. It’s hideous and poorly fitted.

  • Anonymous

  • Addicted2Glamour

Sure, the hair is a minor improvement. But a single pop of color, somewhere, ANYWHERE (black nail varnish!? uugh) would make this look less like a very expensive Halloween costume. OUT.

  • Chantelle James

Her face and hair do look lovely. And I love the midnight navy colour on her.

However… as someone else pointed out, the outfit hasn’t been tailored for her petite figure so the knee-length dress looks dowdy and the peplum on the vest just makes her look short. Even if the outfit did fit her properly, the weird collar/lapel design makes her shoulders look narrow droopy and the unfastened buttons on the jacket make her hips look wide. This exaggerated a-line is quite unflattering.

I think the dress on its own – and a few inches shorter – would be lovely. If it was paired with a vest that, say, had a full back, a proper colour, and fastened properly, the whole outfit would look much better.

    This is OUT.

  • Erin Leahy

    ew. out.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

  • Anonymous

I want to give her an “in” because I love the color of this otherwise hiddy dress.  And because she’s better with the hair (but why did they tease it to give it the EggHeadish Look?).  And she has a lovely face.  But it looks like someone dressed her to play a part in the Munsters.  It makes her seem dowdy.  OUT.  (sorry, truly I am).

    • Anonymous

      Munsters! So right.

  • Merneith

I want to like this but I just can’t. Wrong dress for the wrong girl. Out.

  • Jennifer Keenan Smith

I’m seeing more Jean Simmons than Liz (of course, Jean Simmons was the poor man’s Liz before Joan Collins was, so there you go).  Try again with another dress.

  • Catherine Rhodes

IN. The only thing I don’t like is the ubiquitous stripper shoes. People, there are shoe stores full of fab pickings. Stay away from the fuck-me pumps.

  • Anonymous

This dress is screaming “ugly bridesmaid trying to be hip” – OUT. I much prefer the previous look.

  • MilaXX

Minor IN. The hair and makeup are much improved and the bag is very pretty. The only quibble is the front looks a little odd, like the torso is too long. I suspect it’s a fit issue of some sort, but overall she looks pretty good.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

OUT. This is Not Her Dress.

  • Anonymous

OUT, far too old for her.

  • thatgirl

OUT! When I saw the full length picture, my only thought was, “Oh, honey, that’s not your dress!”

  • Anonymous

This dress made me laugh. It looks like it’s inspired by a 40s cigarette girl’s outfit with a skirt tacked on. Unfortunately it doesn’t work.

She looks nice, other than the dress, which strikes me as clunky and silly at the same time.

  • Fifi LaRoux

I’m just not feeling this one. Out.

  • Anonymous

She’s so cute. I just don’t know why she’s wearing a plus-sized ice skating costume.

  • Anonymous

That dress is straight up ugly. OUT.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think the proportion of the top, especially the peplum, is quite right. She looks like a 13 year old in mom’s dress. If it fit better, it’d be adorable. OUT.

  • Lauren Frankel

    OUT. This dress is awful.

  • Lauren St. Martin

    Out. Its awful.

  • Anonymous

Out.  Makes her body look very oddly proportioned.

  • accidental housewife

Her make-up is pretty, but the dress is tragic. And I prefer the cocker spaniel hair to the updo she has here. OUT

  • Anonymous

The dress is wearing her. She seriously looks like she is trying out for the part of the grown up.

  • Kathrine Marlow

Better, but not right still.  Lilly, use daddy’s money to get a stylist!!! (her dad is Phil Collins)

  • Anonymous

Oh Honey No…this is NOT your look.

  • Lauren Field

No!!! The cut on that top defies all natural curvaceous logic. She is obviously a thin woman, and yet the way that the top is cut smaller around her shoulders, then wider at her torso with darts a good 4 inches lower then the girls should be hanging… makes it look very much like she has absolutely no ‘upper body enunciation’ when there has to be a curve somewhere. Otherwise I love the back and the founce over the booty, definitely gives a nice curve there; but the im-going-to-yoga hair needs to go. I do have mad respect for her eyebrows, as mine can be just as unruly, and she hasn’t tried to completely tame them into pencil-thin submission. Overall I vote out.

  • Jessica Ballinger

Doesn’t it make her shoulders look really… sloped?  especially in the last shot?

I just don’t like it.  Out.

    • Anonymous

I thought so. (about the shoulders.)

  • Anonymous

    OUT.  Ugly dress.

  • Anonymous

Hate the color.  Hate the fit.  Looks good in profile.  That’s all.

  • Anonymous

  • Martha

the fabric looks stiff and clunky

  • Anonymous

out. it’s not terrible, but it isn’t good either. and the shoes are way too heavy.

  • Rachel Lee

The dress looks too stiff and uncomfortable. She should wear something softer! And man does the girl have some eyebrows. Out.

  • Anonymous

    ooooh thats an OUT

  • BuffaloBarbara

I don’t know–I like her hair down a lot better than up,  She has pretty hair.  She should show it off, not bow to pressure to tie it up.  The dress is much better, but the front is wonky.

I’ll go with an Out, but not a very harsh one, and just because the front looks like it belongs on a different dress.

  • Anonymous

Out.  Bad proportions, not flattering and aren’t those the same ugly shoes as the last look?

  • Anonymous

Barely squeaking by as an “in.”

Yes, the bow embellishment is kinda heavy & she needs some understated but blatantly “real” jewelry somewhere about. But the real problem, IMO, with this dress is that the cut makes her look unflatteringly narrow and/or slope-shouldered.  That was at some period in the past considered femininely attractive, but today, not so much.

but it’s not enough to call her out, especially once I’d seen the side view.

  • Praggya R. Barretto

Out. This looks fresh off the Jaclyn Smith for Kmart runway.

  • Anonymous

I HATE that top.  Speaking as someone with a pear-shaped figure, anything that enhances that shape or creates it when it isn’t there turns me right off.  This is making her hips look disproportionately huge, and not in an attractive way.  It’s a pity, because she’s flat-out gorgeous.  OUT.

  • Alexander Peterhans

    She looks so old.. OUT.

  • AllForUSophia

Too mother of the bride. Sorry, but OUT.

  • Anonymous

    I can’t even… OUT!

  • Claudia Gilbert

That dress me no likey!  Out.

  • theneva

Why is she wearing her mom’s dress?

  • Phyllis Craine

See now she looks a lot more like Liz Taylor than Kate Winslet does

  • Anonymous

OUT!  She looks like she is wearing her mother’s dress.

  • Vaniljekjeks

  • Anonymous

Definitely her mother’s dress and the hair is just not very attractive. But…she looks sooo Elizabeth Taylor!

  • Anonymous

I like the hair and make up but not the dress. OUT.

  • Emily

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT.  She looks like she’s wearing her mother’s clothes.  Way too sophisticated/mature look for her.

  • Anonymous

    Out. She looked better yesterday.

  • Anonymous

In when looking at her from the back and side. Out from front angle.

Ok overall an out. Something just too heavy about the look on her.

  • Brittany

  • ecallaw

  • Anonymous

“Joan Collins” pretty much sums this one up. The dress is overdone in that early-1960s-pre-British-invasion way. A real “cocktail party dress.” Just what Collins would have worn in her prime. Not really flattering to the body.

No bitchery intended, just an OUT.

  • Liana Brooks

Cute. I just bought the same outfit for my one-year-old niece, the little poof on the top helps cover diaper bulge. OUT

  • Anonymous

Oh, out. That dress is ugly and her hair is weird. But mostly it’s the awful dress.

  • Judy S

IN. I didn’t actually recognize her. I actually liked the “cocker spaniel hair” with the other dress, which I felt was a harsh design that needed some softness and girliness for contrast. This dress is ridiculous but if she had to wear it simple was the way to go, even egg-shaped simplicity.

She looks to me like the young Liz Taylor.

  • Anonymous

She looks lovely. The dress is awful. Such a shame. Out!

  • Anonymous

Joan Collins was my first thought, too. I was expecting you guys to call this look “too mature” for her. Not that she looks bad but she could look a lot better. Softer fabrics, for instance.

  • Lynsey M.

    OUT.  So much OUT.

  • Aplomb Pomilio

Oh, you should put a link in for those of us who missed the other post. *sigh* now I have to search for it. 😉

  • Anonymous

OUT.  She’s very pretty and she looks cute, but the dress is a bit matronly on her and I hate the hair.  It’s not that the hair is up.  That is fine.  It’s because the updo looks as if it was done at home and in a hurry.  Who’s her hairdresser?  Does she have one?  And I disagree with the makeup.  Too harsh on her.

  • Anonymous

Mother of the bride meets big hair.  The dress is too old for her and they hair is ugly on its own and draws attention to all the wrong places of her face.  Out.

  • Olechka Milashka

I think the dress looks too big on her
    It’s an OUT for me

  • Anonymous

She’s too tiny for all that dress.  Maybe a tall person could have pulled it off better.

  • aimee_parrott

Wow, do I hate that dress!  It’s just so stiff and blocky and ugly.  Gah!  OUT.

  • Meghan Young

NO. Shiny, sequiny, aged, kind of costumey, but not in an kickass HBC way… and I think the hair sucks, too.

  • Charlotte Horseman

Out.I think maybe she does not have the shoulder’s for this dress?  That and maybe also how she is posing… very cute from the back.  Swallowing her up from the front..

  • rynerman

Out.  Egg head and that dress is too fussy.

  • Pat Biswanger

OUT.  She looks like she tried to tart up one of her grandmother’s old outfits, and it’s not working.

  • Anonymous

Out. It ages her and is too heavy….

  • Anonymous

Navy taffeta = adult bridal party

  • Anonymous

    20 going on 50…Out.

  • Anonymous

The material in the sides/back of the bodice looks very stiff and scratchy, even if in reality it isn’t, and I do not like those gaps on the side.  Of course, the whole thing would be an ‘out’ for me just for the peplum.

  • Anonymous

With the hair and the heavy brows, she could be modelling something for Olivier.

The dress is too 80s in cut with that skirt-over-skirt thing, and there are waaay too many gewgaws stapled to it. Also, BAD proportions–her hips looks a mile wide and her shoulders don’t exist.

  • dancinfool

She looks like a Joan Collins wannabe, and not in a good way.

  • Anonymous

OUT. The proportions of this are all wrong for her. The peplum and the poorly-fitted bodice make her torso look both too wide on the top and too long overall.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

OUT.  Too precious and overdone, just like you said.  At least her eyebrows seem to have been groomed, but I really dislike this hair almost as much as the spaniel ears.

  • Cheri Lee

There is too much to dislike here…OUT!

  • Anonymous

  • LocMama

    Ticky tacky OUT!

  • Alexandria N

OUT. like she borrowed a bad dress from someone 30 years older than her then somewhere an evil stylist from hell said Oh honey, that’s too old for you, and then STUCK A BOW ON IT. ick!!!

  • Anonymous

out!…the dress had potential, but lost its way somehow….bad bow, awkward around the neckline.

  • Karen

Out,this was made with someone twice her age in mind. She has great figure and this does nothing for it. Its just bland.

  • Anonymous

I like it on her.  It’s different and unexpected for someone so young.

  • Adella Thompson

Looks like a homemade halloween costume of some sort. Out.

  • linda

she looks a little like Liz Taylor with her hair up

  • akprincess72

    I just can’t support that awful dress…
