In or Out: Gwyneth Paltrow in Emilio Pucci

Posted on September 19, 2011

Get your coffee and strap yourselves in, darlings. We have a TON of Emmys red carpet coverage coming your way today. But before we get to the rundowns, we thought we’d single out one of the more discussed looks of the night.

There’s a persistent idea that it must be so much fun to sit with T Lo while the red carpet parade passes by on our television screen. We’re not sure, but we believe the thinking is that we’re just sitting there, dressed to the nines, as one bitchy bon mot after another passes our lips. Sorry to shatter your illusions, but the reality is pajamas, laptops and the half-formed sentences that form the conversation of most couples who’ve been together a decade and a half.

“What is she…?”
“Oh, PLEASE.”
“Pretty.”
“Ew.”

But when Gwyneth shuffled her way over to be Seacrested, we were inspired to form full sentences, which means we were ready to have an argument.

“That is FABULOUS,” said Lo.

“WHAT? Seriously?” asked T.

“I know everyone’s going to hate it …”

“As well they should. It’s like Mata Hari by way of Bob Mackie.”

“It’s not my problem if you have no taste,” sniffed Lo with finality. Tom, knowing when to stop, kept silent from that point on but rolled his eyes and made wanking gestures when Lo wasn’t looking.

We never claimed it was the Algonquin Round Table around here.

Anyway, Lo has nothing further to say on the subject except that it’s fabulous and it’s unique. Tom will concede that it is off the beaten path, as far as red carpet looks go, and he’ll give Gwynnie credit for that. But belly-baring is so not the kind of risk-taking he wants to support and besides, he might actually like it if it didn’t have that tulle effect going on at the edges, which causes an optical illusion that makes her look like she’s bulging out of this thing. And even Lo has to admit that sitting down must have been a not-particularly-pretty picture. But we both agree that it’s not a typical goddess gown and it’s not the same boring red dress that every other girl was wearing last night, so points for that.

But one of us says IN and the other says OUT, so it’s up to y’all to make the final call.

Vote Now!
IN! It’s different and that’s reason enough!

OUT! If you have a tiny waist and flat stomach, why would you wear a dress that gives the exact OPPOSITE impression?

Our last “In or Out,” Maggie Gyllenhaal working a sexy senior look, got an almost unanimous OUT.

She’s OUT.  The only person over 30 who should ever wear anything like this is Cher.  And yes, the tulle does make her look like she has a muffin top.  Out, Out, Out.

      • Anonymous

        Agreed.

      • Anonymous

And Cher hasn’t worn anything with unrestrained bare abdominal flesh exposed in quite some time, that I recall. It may be transparent spandex, but there’s spandex (or some relative thereof) present. Of course, she does have quite a few decades on Miss GP.

Out!!! Spare tire….. need I say more

    • Anonymous

I kind of like it but I would LOVE it if it weren’t a two-piece.  It kind of cheapens the look.

      • Sobaika Mirza

Exactly. I declare it an IN but just barely – someone on her team should have thought to alter the belly strip. Other than that, it’s fabulous.

        • Anonymous

Agreed.  I missed the emmy’s last night and just saw this first in a brief recap on Good Morning America, and thought it looked fab.  But the photos – not so fab.  I think if you look at it too closely it doesn’t entirely work.  But overall impression it does work, if that makes any sense.  so barely an in – if it had been one piece it would have been a stunning dress.  I mean now you can’t even call it a gown or a dress – it’s a top and bottom!  But still, like the skirt.

          • Anonymous

Second everything you guys said. But I kind of love it. So… IN. I’m crazy.

            • http://www.facebook.com/cruz.alejandra Alejandra Cruz

I agree IN!  i LOVE that it’s a two piece.  LOVE.  but the tulle does create a bulge illusion…only down-side for me. :)

IN :) its different and looks stunning on her (well she has the body for it!)

      • Anonymous

If it were a one-piece, I’d love it. Also, what is going on with her face? She’s starting to look a little…inflexible.

      • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly.  I love the idea of the dress, but the belly-baring business is a big old no.  Even if you have a spectacular belly, this isn’t the time or the place.

      • http://profiles.google.com/decapod73 T.S. Alexander

This was the consensus last night… “That dress would be gorgeous! Why on earth did she cut it in half and bare her belly???”

IN, but with some strong reservations over what it could have been.

        • Anonymous

          My thoughts exactly.

    • Robyn Morelli

I just don’t think that it suits her very athletic, boyish body type. if it was on someone a little curvier it might have been better – right now it’s just not flattering on her stomach area – OUT

      • Anonymous

Actually, I think it would’ve come off as a bit slutty/skanky/overtly sexy on someone with a curvier body. With her athletic body, minus the unflattering tulle, I think its kind of amazing.

    • Laura Nisi

Out. That would have been a huge IN if it were one piece. Sad.

    • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

I’d give it an IN! I really like it. Yes, it’s a bit Cher.. But Cher-inspired rather than a Cher hand-me-down. And besides, it’s a welcome surprise in the sea of basic dresses.

      • Anonymous

except that no one should try to emmulate Cher.  It’s like Kesha trying to look like Gaga.

    • Anonymous

Ax the tulle, connect the top to the bottom and we would’ve had a winner. OUT

    • Anonymous

In. She’s not really the kind of fashionista I admire, but I admire her for taking the chance on this one.

    • http://twitter.com/SuzanneCitere SuzanneCitere

IN! Not a big Gwyneth fan but I’m with Lo on this, sorry Tom.

    • http://twitter.com/AbbottRabbit AbbottRabbit

It achieves the mind boggling feat of making Gwyneth Paltrow look like she has a muffin top. Out.

      • Deana Grenberg

And it makes her boobs look sad.

        • Anonymous

Sorry, but almost everything she wears makes her boobs look sad. Girl is not and never has been a fan of the brassiere.

The only person who could ever wear such an outfit was Cher, whose attitude became the force behind whatever she wore.
      Paltrow isn’t Cher. OUT

      • Anonymous

        agree!

    • Anonymous

I will probably be in the minority here, but I am on Team Lo on this one. My husband and I both thought this was a striking and beautiful dress, and I think the styling is great too.

    • Christina MacDonnell

the problem I have is that I just don’t see the necessity of the belly-bearing.  I think the skirt and top are both gorgeous, and would have looked fantastic if they were connected.  the cut-off just makes it a little trashy.

    • Anonymous

I’m with Tom 100% on this – if a dress can make the ever so slender Gywneth Paltrow look like her belly is bulging, then that is a BAD dress. It’s a shame because if it didn’t have the needless midriff gap, I think it would have been a rather nice gown.

    • Anonymous

The dress itself is great, it’s just a shame that growth spurt hit her so suddenly.

    • http://profiles.google.com/amanda.leigh.albert Amanda Albert

OUT – this is not 1997. I might even like it if it were a black sheer panel instead of actually baring her stomach.

    • http://twitter.com/jenniferleon jenniferleon

OUT! When I saw it I was convinced that it was an ACTUAL muffin top. It wasn’t until I looked closely that I realised the truth.
If I have to look CLOSELY at something to make sure it fits correctly…It’s safe to say that the look ain’t working!

    • Andrea Arthur

The dress could’ve worked if it didn’t make her look like she was bulging out of it at the belly.  Not a flattering look for her at all. Perhaps with some tweaking it could’ve work. But gosh all mighty, at least she tried. Julianna and her ice bucket (or dog cone) dress was a whole ‘nother mess!

    • Anonymous

IN – but I’d have been happier saying that if there were no tulle.

    • Anonymous

I would like it tons more if there wasn’t that midriff cut-out thing, but I’m still gonna say IN.

    • Anonymous

She looks like a more sedate version of Michele Salahi, the notorious fame whore White House gate crasher.

    • Anonymous

OUT. I had the exact thought last night, i.e. “How in the world is that dress making her look like her belly is bulging?”–then realized this am it was the ruffles.  Also, she is not really curvy in that although her waist is tiny it is not that much tinier than her hips–this dress needs a little waist to pull it off best, I believe.  So it is not a great look for her.  But I think the details of the dress are stunning and intriguing. I didn’t even mind the sheerness of it (not obvious here but very much so on the RC).  If it had material through the middle, this would have been an in for me.

    • Anonymous

I don’t object to the dress – it’s kind of hippie chick (though maybe a little too much cooch-pointing in the embellishment design) – but I don’t think she has the personality for this dress.

Heidi could have pulled off this dress. Just not Gwyneth.

I do LOVE the chain link bracelet though.–GothamTomato

      • Anonymous

The chain link bracelet is gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

OUT!!!! she’s so skinny and yet it looks like her tummy is bursting out of that dress.. i really do love the skirt, but the top just looks like one of those cut-off shirts brittany spears used to wear back in the day (and they looked better on brit!)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EYYAY25W7VS5BYCOCTK62SSUBI tw125

OUT! I actually think it’s a pretty dress aside from the tulle around the middle but it doesn’t suit her at all. Maybe if she had more of an hourglass shape it would look less like she had a spare tire wrapped around her middle.

    • http://twitter.com/Wild_Horses__ Beth

Bless you, TLo! I saw some Emmy pics on another site and thought, “I wonder if TLo posted anything yet”, and here it is!  You spoil your bitter kittens. :)  I don’t even have to read your post before voting:  big OUT.  This skinny girl looks like she has a muffin top in this dress.  Gwyneth can look so elegant & chic, but when she screws up, boy…she’s the “little girl with a little curl right in the middle of her forehead…”

    • Anonymous

Out, but I wish it were in.  Little things make the difference & in this case, the little things are Out.  The tulle ruffly things are unfortunate, the dress really ought to be one piece, and I would have put her hair up. The tulle ruffly things are ok on the the sleeves & neckline, though.  Jewelry is nice, make up is a little understated, but ok.

    • http://twitter.com/Hussified Coleen D. Wybranski

OUT. It gives her a muffin top, which is super unfortunate. If she’d gone the sari route like Helen Mirren did a few years ago, it might have worked, but it just looks unfinished.

      • Anonymous

That’s exactly what I thought!  It looks like she started to wear a sari but left off the last bit of fabric.  It’s a shame because I was kind of digging the bottom half.

    • Cheri Lee

I like it.  It looks much prettier on TV.  IN

    • Maria Acosta Cruz

Out. It’s a miss and she comes across as slightly desperate.

    • Anonymous

That tulle is killing the whole look. Really, if they had either avoided the tulle or kept it one piece I’d say IN, because Gywnie has the body for this. However, it’s weirdly unflattering, and that’s enough to distract me from all the other lovely and interesting details.

      OUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTT! Ack.

She’s too old for a bare midriff #1, and icky icky icky, the tulle around the mid-section, there, has the effect, as you said, of making her look like her junk is sort of hanging over the top of the skirt.

NO, NO NO NO noooooooooo! Out.

    • Anonymous

I agree, that tulle gives the illusion of a need for nude spanx. Why wouldn’t someone see that prior to her wearing this? She had another sheer dress that she wore once and it got her on alot of worst dressed lists, you think she would remember that if I do! That midriff is the only part of the dress that makes it an OUT, would have been stunning and probably was when photographed without a tulle shadow giving her that false muffin.

    • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

IN!  Just get rid of that tulle.  I had the exact same thought. :)

    • Anonymous

Gwyneth likes to take risks and surprise people with her choices. I like her for that. But there are two elements I can’t get behind: the muffin top effect is unfortunate, and I’m not totally sold on the top part for some reason. It’s an OUT from me.

    • Anonymous

      OUT.  Death by Muffin Top.

    • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

OUT. Belly-baring is tacky  unless in a sporty/dancer kind of way, and even then it can be tricky. Agreed that the tulle makes her look like she has a belly, especially since she bares only this small strip of skin that it’s impossible to see if she has abs or not, so it’s just a strip of skin that looks like a muffin top. Also, it cuts across the smallest part of her waist, so you can’t really see the part where her torso slims down. We all agree that this is definitely unconventional, and she gets points for choosing something that’s not a typical starlet/goddess dress, but honestly, she doesn’t have the figure for it. IN NO WAY AM I CALLING HER FAT, we can all agree she has a slammin’ body. But she lacks the va-va-voom curves that someone like Sofia Vergara has, who probably could have put way more sex appeal into this dress.

    • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

She’s out. She looks like she’s pulling a “hulk hogan” or the Incredible Hulk and ripped her dress in a fit of pique.

    • Anonymous

I give it a guarded IN – there is a moment when she looks like she has a tummy, but overall I think it’s a beautiful outfit. And her makeup and hair are so much softer-looking than usual. I think she looks beautiful and relaxed.

    • Anonymous

I say IN because the styling is great, the details on the dress are beautiful, and, most of all, it is different.  Not something I would wear, but if you work your abs like Gwennie then you can show it off all you want.

    • http://twitter.com/maggie162 Maggie

Out. Tom and I seem to agree on a lot of things. Plus the hair is half-assed.

    • Jenna Gordon

i like it if i don’t look too closely…i guess that is saying something. i think that i like the idea more that the actual dress. the tulle is horrific. it is making her toned body look flabby in the worst area. also the pattern on the breasts is odd. i would like it more with a couple changes but like they said at least it isn’t the same old thing. you know the dress is something special because they didn’t even talk about hair and makeup.

    • Anonymous

Forget the belly. It looks like a fish is about to swim up her vagina! I hate that oval detail in the skirt – it would be gorgeous if it was filled in more. Yuck!

      I agree with Tom.  OUT.

Clean edges might have made a huge difference.

    • Anonymous

OUT – It’s amazing that someone with a slamming bod like Gwyneth looks puffy because of that tuile, but she’s puffy puff puff in that outfit. If it were a gown with no bared midriff, I probably would’ve given it an in.

    • Esra Erkan

      totally IN! Lo is right.

    • Kate McCain

The skirt is beautiful. If the outfit was one dress it would have been stunning. As it is it gives her a pudgy-looking stomach which I’m sure she doesn’t have.

    • Anonymous

Any dress that gives a woman with 5% body fat a muffin top gets an OUT from me.  Kudos to Gwyneth for trying something different, but this is just a miss.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1092641214 Michelle Hughey Gonzalez

My first thought upon seeing this…. I like the dress just not on her..it made her look fat & her breasts droopy..she’s so far from fat it’s laughable so….no on the dress.  .  Like someone suggested maybe someone with a more hour glass figure…Beyonce or JLo comes to mind

Not a big fan of Paltrow, but I have to agree, she looks amazing.  The tulle should go though, as stated, it does give an unflattering optical illusion.

OUT.  The tulle is giving me a headache– it looks like the picture is blurry and its very distracting.  If only the dress were one continuous flow of fabric, without the silly exposed middle to disrupt the flow and distract the eye, it would have been an IN, as her jewelry and makeup are lovely and I like the skirt a lot.  Too bad.

    • Tuana Neves

When I saw her I couldn’t help myself and said out loud: OH NO, SHE DIDN’T.

She’s so thin and pretty, and that dress wasn’t flattering at all on her belly area.Could be a pretty dress …but no.

Here’s the thing: she doesn’t have a tiny waist.  No, she clearly doesn’t have an ounce of fat on her, but she doesn’t have a tiny waist.  She’s built fairly thick throughout, like a sturdy column and this…outfit is doing nothing to say otherwise.  On the contrary, it’s making her appear thicker through the middle.  A for effort, but it’s still an out.

I weirdly sort of like it. I agree that it would be fabulous as a one-piece, and I think that it’s way more appropriate for the Grammys instead of the Emmys, and I usually kind of hate Gwynnie on principle and would like to give her an OUT just because of that, but despite all of that, she just comes in on the side of IN.

I think I’d like it a lot more if it weren’t midriff-baring. The intricacies of the details are pretty amazing, though.

I love the details on this dress and I have a hippy dippy love of crochet but on Gwyneth, she of the perfectly tiny and taut little body, this thing is awful and O to the U to the T, OUT!  The tulle has to go, really, it must. It makes Gwynnie look like she has a muffin top which I would have thought impossible to achieve. And I think the detailing around her bust makes her boobs look flat and saggy. Her body just seems too athletic for this dress though I’d pay to see on Sofia Vergara (who looked sensational last night). Actually I’d pay good money to BE Sofia Vergara. Sigh.

      • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

I was so distracted by the midriff illusion that I forgot about the bust!  You’re right, the boobs look even worse.  And I thought Sofia looked AMAZING, that dress was so flattering.  Best look of the night, though Jane Lynch had some beautiful gowns.

OUT!  Love the skirt (even if it does look a bit like a mantilla).  The top says she has spent too many hours working with the Glee kids.  A different top, and this could have been fabulous.  Or it could have completed the “look what I did with Great-Grandmother’s Mantilla!” look.

OUT.  She is so thin, but you can’t tell!  Also, the top makes her look like her boobs are sagging and pointing outward.  I so want to like this dress, but I just don’t think it’s HER dress.

IN!  If this was full length head to toe beaded lace it would look too gothic and old lady.  That little strip of belly kinda makes the dress in my opinion.  Could do without the tulle, but otherwise I think she looks great and who but Gwyneth could pull this off?  She definitely has the GOOPy body for it.

    • Anonymous

My first thought was Uh-Oh, but then as I looked at her, she got a big IN from me.

Granted, that tulle effect is unfortunate; that didn’t come across on the TV. But what you have here is a lengha choli inspired look that doesn’t scream “cultural appropriation” while still being noticeably Indian-influenced. It’s doing all that on-trend black lace but it doesn’t look like every other black lace dress and it’s not PRAISE THE LORD sheer.

Plus, Gwynnie always gets the hair and makeup right. Look at that punim!

       IN.

    • Anonymous

I think it would be pretty if it were a one piece gown instead of a silly midriff top and skirt. Love the beading, but the stomach showing just looks tacky.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

OUT. I might (might) be able to get behind a belly baring look like this if it were done correctly. But the tulle is a problem as is the size of the space between top and bottom. It doesn’t really look like she’s fully committed to the look. The first couple of times I saw it, I just thought that she was wearing a top that was too small and didn’t quite reach the top of the skirt.

IOW, it looks like a mistake.

    • Jannelle Lebron

      I’d say IN!!!
      She looks fabulous!

    • Anonymous

Whatever we think, I know that Olivier is gazing at these photos and dreaming of Gwynnie as his perfect client.

I don’t hate hate hate it, but it’s just not right. The tulle trim is terrible, the skirt is beautiful, the boxy top and little sleeves look very matronly.  So even though she has the clothes hanger body required for a design like this, it has to be an OUT.

And yes: How do you sit in this outfit without looking poufy and squishy?

    • Anonymous

      OUT!!!!!

It makes her look like she has a muffin top . . . and it’s not all that, definitely whole grain but not lowfat.

    • Anonymous

I heart the beadwork and the lace, but the open midriff is reminds me of what prom dresses were in the late 90s. She’s a fabulous-looking 40 and should have rocked a plunging neckline or back, but the midriff isn’t super flattering on her, and she’s hot. But you know what, it’s not a total trainwreck, but she should know better. IN.

    • Anonymous

IN…and I really hate giving that to HER!

She’s got the body for it and it fits perfectly.  Sexy without being vulgar.  Really pretty dress, for the most part.

I also hate the tulle…made me look closely at her baring belly to see if she was bulging out…not.  I kinda suspect she had abs/contouring painted on at the spray tan salon though….makes her look like she has a bit of a belly…

    • Anonymous

Out! That tulle completely ruins it to the point of I don’t know if it’d be In without it. All I know is I agree that it gives her the appearance of a gut rather then firm abs.

    • Anonymous

I’m leaning towards In on this one. I don’t love the stomach part since it’s not super flattering on her, but the rest is pretty fabulous.

In, just because it’s different.  I happen to love it, but even if I didn’t, she still gets my vote.

    • Anonymous

I’m going with out, but barely.

The garment is beautifully embellished and a work of artistic craftsmanship.   The thing that ruins it for me is the way it photographs which perhaps isn’t fair.   She truly looks like she has a roll of fat around the middle.   I think in person this isn’t noticeable and when she took test photographs, no one noticed the problem because they had all seen it in person.     The tulle and that shiny piece of ribbon on piping or whatever it is just under the tulle on the skirt ruins it for me.   It’s sad because really it’s so beautiful otherwise.

If this had been a one piece garment, maybe TLo would have called it safe or something like that, but I think it would have been gorgeous.

    • Brad and Anne White

OUT. And I’m sure she felt absolutely gorgeous in it, but she looks ridiculous.

      Out. Yuck.

    • Anonymous

I would love this dress if it met in the middle.  The midriff baring schtick just takes it in a “belly dancing” or “Mati Hari works the lounge at Ceasers” direction that isn’t flattering.  She is a good looking woman with an very toned body but this actually draws away from that and makes her look cheap and desperate.  Imagine this as a full dress – Gorgeous!

    • Anonymous

I love it.  The tulle detail is a mistake, but otherwise it’s interesting and beautiful.  And if everyone else is showing their boobs, why can’t she show a different part for a change?  I still can’t stand her, but she looks great.

Out – the dress could have had potential fabulousness on the red carpet if it wasn’t cut in half to show Gwynnie’s midrift.  I can’t get behind belly-bearing either (especially if i had to sit next to her inside the auditorium).

    • http://www.revivify.net Alex Smith

The top gives the illusion of tiny, droopy breasts, and the tulle… well, everyone’s covered that. There’s no way Gwynnie has as much chub as it looks like here. I’m alright with the idea – love the skirt, actually – but the top is awful in pattern and proportion and it’s just not a flattering look overall. My straight boyfriend declared it “gypsy prostitute”. That’s a problem.

Out.  The little tulle things around the waist and top make her look like the dress is cutting into rolls of fat.  That’s inexcusable.  It’s ugly to begin with, but no one with any sense would try this dress on and think “This makes me look good.”

I have to say Out. I’m no Gwynneth fan; actively despise her, in fact, but I’m trying to be objective about this. I actually love the skirt. The top is problematic. The pattern over the breasts makes them look saggy and the bare belly makes her look like a rectangle.Perhaps if there was only the teeniest bit of a peek of belly, rather than 3 inches, it would be an in. But the high waisted skirt with the awkward length of the cropped top only serve to make her look dumpy.

Speaking, as I occasionally have before, as a belly dancer, this dress makes all the same sorts of unflattering mistakes that newbie belly dancers so often make in their costuming–waist too high, top cutting across the torso in exactly the wrong place and the decorative elements giving the impression of bulge and muffin top where there isn’t any.  If it were well fitted, I think I would love it, but then it might also then leave the realm of dress and go right into the land of costume.

Not a huge fan of bare middrifts but she still looks good enough for an unenthusiastic IN.

I’m amazed at the amount of people who think she looks like she has a muffin top.  She looks fabulous.  When you can’t differentiate between a shadow caused by tulle and fat, time to get a stronger prescription for the contact lenses.

Although I applaud the idea and her jewelry.

OUT- she doesn’t have enough of a waist or hips to make that midriff-bearing thing look good. It would be so much better if it were a straight column, with the top and bottom meeting. I love the dress itself, but on her? no.

If it had just been a full length gown instead of two pieces, she would have been stunning. Instead, the fact that the dress is beautiful is completely overshadowed by three inches of belly. (Though if I had a belly that flat I would probably want to show it off too!)

Out.  I like the style of it, and if the middle wasn’t missing, it would be a WERQ for me.  But…it does give the appearance of a belly and no one wants that.  Everyone wants a dress that flatters, not highlights (or creates) problem areas.  Plus the pattern on the chest makes it look like her breasts are in some sort of sling with pasties on the nips.  These are not classy images.

I will say I like that it’s different, but it came up short.

I think she almost looks fantastic, but I cannot condone the middle of that dress.  She is skinny as a rail and she looks like she’s bulging.  That makes her an OUT, but if it were one piece instead of two it’d be a big in.

    • Anonymous

Eeeep. That was the noise I made. This would have been great as a full dress. The bared belly is absolutely awful. The shadows created by the tulle make it look like her belly is sticking out. I hate when women don’t take a lot risks finally take one then botch it so badly that they won’t take another risk for a long while. it is too bad, because she can carry off that much detail, but this is horrible.

    • Anonymous

OUT. I’m sure this looked great in person, but on camera it just makes her tummy look poochy, which it is obviously not.  A gorgeous look if her tummy wasn’t showing.

    • Anonymous

I’m in T’s camp.  If it don’t look great on skinny Gwynnie, it sure ain’t gonna do much for anyone else.  Also, her black eyeliner is too harsh for her pale blondness.  She looks pretty, but really not the most flattering look.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s flattering.  Interesting and unique definitely, but not flattering.  Her stomach is in great shape, but the dress isn’t showing that — in fact, I think anything that comes above the belly button usually doesn’t do a good job showcasing a flat stomach, somehow it always looks a little bloated.

OUT.  There’s lace over a nude lining, with sequins and tulle and very expensive jewelry that looks like its from the Joan Rivers Collection from QVC AND a belly shirt?  I guess it could also have been in fucshia and had some marabou trim and she could have ratted out her hair to Texas proportions, but Mata Hari by way of Bob Mackie makes it seem more tasteful than it is.

    • Anonymous

Perhaps turn that hiddeous illusion netting into a colorful sash.  Bringing the black lace together would be boring.  Perhaps a Greek Blue, or vivid Yellow.  Strike that. No yellow.  Any of the cool colors would work.

And I hate the tulle trim especially around the waist area

    • Anonymous

As hard as I’ve tried my eyes cannot unbulge her tummy in this look. Intellecutally I know she’s quite thin, but the tulle on this thing creates the illusion of an unsightly bulge in her mid-section. OUT.

OUT! If you have a tiny waist and flat stomach, why would you wear a dress that gives the exact OPPOSITE impression?
Yes, how on earth did that happen? The woman has no waist definition which is a shame because I like the concept. Maybe if the lower half wasn’t the equiv of mom jeans with a too-high waist?

    • Susan Crawford

Wait a minute . . . if you add a giant horsehair hat with black feathers, wouldn’t this be a cross between Streisand’s bum-peeking black lace jumpsuit she wore to the Oscars and Cher’s Bob Mackie black lace bum-peeking outfit with quasi-aboriginal headdress SHE wore to the Oscars? Not loving the middle, where that sheer material makes it look like she has a little muffin-top going on, which we ALL know Ms. Goop would NEVAH allow. On the other hand . . . I kind of like the design, and if it had not had that midriff-revealing going on, I would like it a lot. So here’s a qualified IN for the Goopster.

I’m with Lo – I love it. Very different and fits her great and yeah, maybe something pooched out when she sat down but who cares. I do wish there was no tulle around the mid-section because it created crazy shadows that made it look at times like things weren’t in perfect form down there but hey, it’s Gwynnie, she doesn’t do yoga for three hours a day so she can hide that bod under a princess gown. Me love.

I’m giving it an IN–perhaps the two piece is not troubling me because I’m of Indian origin and it’s very Bollywood, like a choli lengha.  Even the pattern has such a Bollywood feel that I’m sure that was an influence on the dress. I do think it would be better without the tulle, but still think it’s refreshingly different and I love it. Also Gwyneth’s hair and makeup are very pretty are here.

OUT. I would have given it an IN if it didn’t expose her midriff (jeez, I sound like a disapproving school marm). Also, i am not always happy with my body but, when I saw this on tv last night, I praised my curves, that curves that have eluded her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=167100010 Meghan Young

The tulle is what ruins it completely; this woman is flat as a pancake on those abs but the tulle makes it look like they’ve squeezed a roll of fat out of her yet. Not that there’s anything wrong with fat – but this dress isn’t intended for that look, and this woman doesn’t have any. So. Optical illusion for the lose. (Plus, let’s face it: beautiful or not, not even a daring/challenging dress like this makes Gwyneth anything but a Very Beige Person.)

    • http://twitter.com/younglibrarian Katie Dunneback

Gah! I’m honestly torn. On the plus side, this is unique, I like the way the bodice and skirt are well-fitted to her body, and while I’m not a fan of the black lace over nude underlayer, the pattern of the lace makes it work for me. On the negative, that midriff. Even on TV when she was presenting, I thought she was bulging out. I think I’d go with an unequivocal IN, IF that midriff had not been there. That dress really doesn’t need it thanks to the lace design. I’m going to have to go with a qualified OUT because why would you ever want to make the person wearing your dress look like she’s bulging out when the dress is otherwise perfectly fitted?

I love it.  The tulle bit at the belly is completely erroneous and looks stupid, but the rest of the dress, and look, are stunning.  This is something you notice from across the room, even on screen.  I love that it’s a two-piece because it makes the dress unusual as well as beautiful.  On another woman it might come off as trashy, or as more referential to Cher, but Gwyneth Paltrow has such a particular look and persona that the way she wears this dress is going to be different.  I guess the contrast between Gwyneth and the dress makes the two of them together more interesting and unexpected.

Despite the unflattering tulle happening at the edges of the midriff, I think it’s fun and different. If she had a curvier body, I think it the look would have been more successful. But for the sake of different and because she looks pretty from the neck up, I say IN!

IN.  Points for originality outweigh any minor quibbles about the tulle at the waistbands.  I suspect they were much less of an issue in person anyway – you’d clearly discern the difference between her taught midsection and the wisps of black encircling it.

The concept is interesting and different, and I love the lace details but the dress fails spectacularly where it really counts – it simultaneously makes her breats look sagging, adds a muffin top and obliterates any waist she might otherwise sport. So triple failure => OUT

I’m not voting. I just dropped by to say I can’t believe the media isn’t buzzing about that woman last night that made the universal “She’s drunk” sign to her husband when Paltrow walked out.
Paltrow walks out, the cut to the audience and land on a woman in a red dress who is clapping nicely and then just turns to her husband and makes some gesture, he sort of nods.  I had to go slo mo. I thought she thumbed her nose for a moment, but no, she was miming drinking.

I think it’s an OUT for sure. It makes her look like she’s got no waist (or too much waist, if you want to call muffin top – I don’t think it really looks like she’s got a muffin top so much as that there’s no definition from breast to waist to hip, she’s just a column in that thing). It was tacky when JLo wore a belly baring dress for royalty and it’s tacky seeing Gwyneth doing it here.

      OUT.

Here’s my take on this (which shows you that I have way too much time to think about these things): Gwyneth wants to show those children on the runway from Glee and so on that she still is a slammin’ hottie, even after birthing her own vegan fruit-named kids.  I admire women who take risks after 30.  I am astounded at her fitness and health (even if she is a little self-righteous about it).  But this came off as desperate to me.  Big arrows in the lace pointing to her lady parts, sheer boobies, AND an exposed midriff … tooooooooo much.  C’mon Gwyneth, you don’t have to try this hard.  You aren’t Cher.

In.  It really stood out among the usual pile of satin gowns.  I’m fine with the bit of midriff–she’s covered up elsewhere and her dress even has sleeves and a fairly high neckline, so she’s just exposing one bit of flesh.  Would have preferred a flatter edging than the tulle ruffle, but other than that,  I’m so glad to see something different.

If it MUST be either in or out, it’s OUT. Not just for the optical illusion of tummy flab (yes, first thing I saw) but because from a distance she looks flat-chested in this and up close the lace patterning makes her look saggy. Not an optimal combo.

But if I unfocus my eyes just a bit and gloss over the unflattering critique, it’s a look one could easily call in. GP wearing a subtly unflattering but dramatic outfit looks head and shoulders better than lots of the denizens of the red carpet, looks quite good, in fact.

Mutton dressed as lamb.  However, I have a theory about a lot of the Emmy dresses this year.  This is so NOT Gwyneth’s dress.  It clearly belongs on Heather Morris, who was not wearing her dress either.  I think these women all got together a couple of hours before the show and traded outfits.  Now, what Heather was wearing was clearly NOT Gwyneth’s dress, but maybe Naya Rodriguez’s (probably butchered her name) dress would have been Gwyneth’s.  Which leaves the puzzle of whose dress Heather was wearing…  Could we make a game out of this?

I don’t hate it but I will agree the tulle at the edges ruins it, which makes it more OUT than in. If you have a fab body (I know there are a lot who disagree) why do anything to disguise it? And I don’t think it’s doing her girls a lot of favors. Almost in.

      Out.  Period.  Period.

Oh, dolls, OUT. I never thought I”d live to see a garment that makes HER look like she’s got a belly bulge!

Black is too harsh a color on her pale skin. Plus I don’t like that it is a two piece especially on someone her age. Out

Surprisingly IN. I want to dislike it but I like the uniqueness and think she is one of the very few people out there that could pull this off.

Oh Gywnnie!  I don’t care how skinny you are-have you forgotten about age-appropriateness?  HUGEass OUT!!  And is anyone else sick of these people doing nothing with their hair?  I’m SO over the loose and casual locks for every occasion.

IN! Why the hell not?  Shes working the dam thing. Who else to where it but her, and to what other event but the Emmys??

    • Anonymous

Out. All it does is emphasize that she has no curves whatsoever. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…(said in my best Jerry Seinfeld voice)

Dudes, Gwynnie is grossness personified… but she does have the banging bod.  So if she appears to have the muffin top, then this is deeply, deeply wrong.  So OUT the gayness can be seen from space.

Gotta say Out… I like the dress, but agree that it does make her tummy look a lot larger than it is. Play to your strengths, don’t disguise them.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YYKK5LDOSRAPJXINSD253PYMIA Kathryn

In with reservations. This dress is a fabulous example of (probably) real hand-made Irish crochet interpreted for the 21st century. OTOH, the quasi-bare, tulle-covered midriff is kinda goofy, and the skirt portion looks like a really gorgeous curtain.

    • Anonymous

This may be the worst thing I saw anyone in last night. It’s like she was desperate to wear only the underpieces of a sari and really wanted them to look like they fit badly.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2IVH65NRJLZB7MQ6CCXQUBDJ6U Melanie H

Out. Would’ve been an in if she hadn’t gone with the bare midriff. I had the same thoughts about the tulle edging making her look like she has rolls (which of course she doesn’t) and cringed at the thought of how it looked while she was seated.

    • elzatelzabelz

OUT. Trying WAY too hard. It’s cheap and tacky and doesn’t fit the event she’s attending.

IN IN IN.  It’s unusual and she looks fabulous in it.  Think Bollywood couture.

I love the outfit, but not on her.

I mean, it looks great on her (except the tulle-effect bulge illusion as noted), but this is not the dress of a woman who names her children Apple and Moses. I’m on the in/out fence. If she’s deliberately trying to change her image and is going to lean this way for the next several years (but not go over into full-tilt Cher land, because there can be only one Cher), then I would support that. It must be hard being Saint Gwyneth all the time.

Okay, I just convinced myself. I’m giving her an IN.

The skirt is fabulous, but the bare midriff is killing it for me. I seriously want that top to be at least 2 inches longer, so she won’t slip a nipple out when she lifts her arms. OUT.

      OUT OUT OUT!!!!!!!

Out!  If this were Cher I would say sure but EVERYONE else needs to just accept that this kind of thing isn’t for them.  Also, that tulle is giving me shingles!

OUT, just hiddy…  Uncle Lo, have you been drinking?  I mean, like a lot???

An iffy IN, because I hate the bare midriff, but it the whole thing is gorgeous. I wish they had closed that gap.

    • kjthorp

OUT!!! Why would you want to wear something that makes you look like you have a muffin top????
Uncle Lo, please go hug some plaid in your closet for us.

OUT. I want Kevin Spacey to pop out and cut off that dress and stick in a box and give it to Brad Pitt in the middle of a desert.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

OUT. Just say NO to gut-bulge-creating optical illusions!  Also, that top with the skirt make her look like a mermaid with a fish-shaped object pointing to where the lady plumbing normally goes.  I mean, I can’t be the only one who sees that.

    • http://twitter.com/BeantownMrs Praggya R. Barretto

Yikes! She looks pudgy and pudgy and Gwyn usually aren’t in the same sentence. Out.

Out. Great call on the sheer edge muffin top illusion and I do not like that it its doing to her chest. Further it plants her half a foot into the ground.

She has no waist in this dress – Out.

    • Anonymous

OUT.   I agree, the tulle at the waist makes her look heavy, and she is most decidedly NOT.  Any dress that ADDS weight is an automatic OUT no-brainer.

      OUT. Ugly, unflattering, and weird.

I agree with Lo!! This is fabulous!! And i do not mind the sheer middle i think it makes it different from any other black/lace/sheer/beaded dress that we have all seen on the red carpet before! I love and appreciate the fact this is different and really cool!!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_V3XVCD3IS5DGA3HKJ4L57O7XWY Nico R

What is up with this bitch’s hair, she has like no hair, she’s like practically bald. Her hair looks like exactly one layer/track of weave. Put some body in that shit, girl! I have never seem more limp, lifeless, pin-straight hair on anyone ever, and the center part just takes to the uppermost echelons of bleh ever. Shave ur head already, bitch!

    • Samantha Irene

Out! The dress isn’t quite the right/proportion/size the tulle makes her look buldgy – but more than that she looks so square from bust to hips… I think maybe a little bigger in the skirt (not a full size or anything, just to give a little more volume to the lower half), remove the excess tulle – and wearing at the Grammys – then she’d be IN -as it’s an amazing look – I just don’t think it’s quite working.

    • Anonymous

this is how I see it: someone else agrees with Jackie Collins, who, apparently, tweeted that Gwennie was a little annoying, and that someone is the one who stuck her in this dress. Because. The dress itself is fab. BUT that odd little … fluff sticking out everywhere above the neck and around the midsection casts odd shadows that make you start wondering if there’s actually something IN there, and then you spend the rest of the night waiting cheerfully for the alien to chew itself out of Gwennie’s belly. Thus providing the entertainment the Emmys forgot to bring this year. Sorry, Mrs. Jane, I love you but man, did last night stink… (and oh, that’s an out for the dress. But it would’ve been an in if it’d gotten a haircut. Fuzz-cut. Fluff-removal. Or…something).

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PFPESDH4EDCW3UEDVNWWSHB4XQ Michaela T.

      So. OUT.

If she covered the belly and took off the tulle, it would have been gorgeous; still a tight column dress, mind you, because Gwyneth needs to remind the world at every opportunity that she is tall and lean – but it could have been a lovely, beautifully detailed step out of her usual box. So sad :/

And, I’m not even against belly-baring dresses in general – the sari inspiration is obvious and something I’d usually appreciate. It’s just… not working for her, in the slightest. Anyone has the runway version of this, though? I’d be very interested in seeing that.

IN. It’s pretty, unusual and daring (although the tulle/ chiffon at the midriff isn’t her friend)

OUT.  I…Don’t even know how this is up for discussion.  As high as her breasts are in the top, the shape still makes them look droopy and the tulle does make her look bulgy.

    • Anonymous

May I give an IN to the dress, but an OUT to Gwennie in the dress? That dress was made for an hour-glass with a tiny waist. Anyone have Dita von Teese’s number?

That tulle areound the middle isn’t exactly doing her any favors, and I also feel that the dress is giving her a bad case of pancake boobs.  Otherwise, I think it is striking and interesting and she is definitely taking a risk.  Althouhg her hair and make-up look nice, I sometimes wish she would leave the flat iron at home.  Apparently I am of two minds on this one but over all, I think striking and unusual wins out for me.

    • narita_rayna

so OUT.  i get the idea of it. in an editorial or on the right-shaped girl, this would be amazing.  but, as stick thin as she is, this dress doesn’t fit her.  it makes her look chubby & dowdy, not lean & sexy.  she thinks she’s cher.  she’s not cher.

In In In In IN! Exquisite. Elegant. Showed her smokin’ hot bod without being crude. She could walk in it, so that was a plus, too. It set off her face, the lace-work and pattern are amazing.

In, in, a thousand times IN!

    • http://twitter.com/tommarkiewicz88 tom markiewicz

i think if it had of been a connected sheath, it would have been FABULOUS! the high necked, capped sleeve look was very fresh and beautiful across the board last night. but, like tom said, with the belly section PLUS the seams, it makes her look far bigger than she is, and does any slim, or any celebrity at all, girl want that? no.

    • Anonymous

Out. If it was one piece it might be better. The beading on the skirt is really beautiful. Definitely not the dress for her, though. I can’t stand her, but she usually looks great.
