In or Out: Dianna Agron in Madewell

Posted on September 23, 2011

Dianna Agron frustrates us.

Don’t worry, we’re not losing any sleep over it or anything. It’s just that she’s such a pretty girl and she’s riding a fame-wave right now that could be very brief if she doesn’t play it just right. Her tendency to wear looks that are too mature or too demure by half don’t really serve her that well at this moment in time. We’re not suggesting she should dress slutty or even in the attention-getting manner of her co-star Lea Michelle, but almost every time we see her on the red carpet we think, “Sweetie, you just don’t get it.

Dianna Agron in MadewellDianna Agron attends the launch of The Alexa Chung For Madewell Fall 2011 Collection in California in a Madewell shirtdress paired with Opening Ceremony Jeanette t-Strap platform pumps.

But we have to say, this seems like a decent compromise, all things considered. She clearly doesn’t like to wear looks that are too showy or sexy and that’s fine. Our problem with her has always been her tendency to equate demure with boring or even frumpy. Here’s a dress that keeps her covered up, but it looks fresh and modern on her. We think a more saturated color would work much better on her, but this isn’t a film premiere or an awards show, so the low-key aspect of it is fine (if a little disappointing). And yes, the shoes are too matchy, but they sure are cute shoes, aren’t they? And we HATE T-straps normally.

Vote Now!
IN! Demure, stylish, and cute!

OUT! There’s a villa, a sea captain, and seven brats with your name on them, Dianna.

Both Zoe Saldana and Rose Byrne received loud OUTs for (respectively) the vintage tablecloth dress and the Frankendress.

I appreciate her demure style – so few starlets do it. She manages to stand out a bit and seems very modest. I don’t have a problem with her clothes, it’s everything else.

Would it kill her to invest in some blush? Maybe even a blow dryer? Her cut always looks awful outside of the show, and that’s NOT a hard look to wrangle. OUT, simply on principle.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=167100010 Meghan Young

This. It’s never the fact that she dresses demurely; it’s that her hair is flat and styleless and her makeup is as plain as can be. She’s a pretty girl, but she never looks stunning because she never tries to look stunning. Think about it. Someone like Claire Danes could rock the shit out of this outfit, because she wouldn’t walk out of the house looking completely and totally flat and beige.

In! She looks adorable, and different. Love it.

    • nancy

In. I like the color, the shoes, the fit is good, and I even think her hair looks cute. Sure it’s low-key and demure but it suits her and it’s refreshing. She’s not wearing something too hoochy, too tight, too wrinkled or see-through.

    • Melanie S.

I say in–it looks a little wrinkled to me, but I like it, and she looks good in it.

As a side note, is there something I don’t understand about the term “platform pump?”  I always assumed it meant a thick sole, but this doesn’t look out of the ordinary.

      • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth M.

Isn’t that funny? We’ve become so accustomed to seeing celebrities in giant horse-hoof platforms now that ones like these look like ordinary heels! It looks to me like the outer of these shoes is an ordinary sole, but there is still a hidden platform in the vamp of the shoe.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Out. It’s a cute dress, but it crossed over into frumpy territory on her. If it was cut at or above the knee, it would be much improved. The color is all wrong for her because she’s now one big blob of TAN. This is also an occasion where hot pink lipstick would help things out.

      • Anonymous

Totes! It shouldn’t be longer than about 2″ below the knee, to show calf as well as ankle.

What’s “midi” on a model is almost maxi on a regular height woman.

    • Anonymous

      In, definitely low key.

This would be a really cute work look.  For a store launch, less than fabulous.  OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/justonesock Lo West

IN!  I love things that border on safari-chic. Or like a teacher.  This is super cute, and has style, and I like the quirky style she goes for– not always needing to dress like other hollywood starlets.  It’s classic and classy.  Just not super crazy about the color.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

In? Out? I’d like to see my daughter wearing this. Maybe to the movies some afternoon? But my daughter doesn’t do dry-cleaning so I’d need the polyester version.

    • http://twitter.com/lbcubbison Laurie Cubbison

That’s what I call a good dress to teach in: pockets to hold a dry erase marker and your office keys, comfortable, long enough to teach in without flashing the students if you sit on the desk. But at least the shoes take it out of teacherdom.  But I don’t think starlets should dress like me when I go teach. Outish.

      • Anonymous

Exactly.  I had the same thought , ie “That would be a really cute outfit for work.”  And I would even wear the shoes.

    • Anonymous

      Ga-ross. Out.

    • Julie Fountain

I vote IN, I think she looks great, and the shoes are fantastic.

    • Anonymous

Out. I really like the top half of the dress but below the waist it just looks frumpy and old fashioned. I also don’t like the shoes at all.

in.  dunno why.  it just works for me and it’s not all cookie cutter and best of all it’s not Paz-esque.

In. The sleeves are just hinting at edgy and modern, that color is interesting on her-although my black Irish self would look a week dead in it. The shoes are fun although I was trying to figure out what the motif was until the close-up when I saw that it was just a “natural” spot. The belt was a good choice.

    • Anonymous

IN. Totally. She looks totes cute, and I for one am not going to knock a young starlet for wanting to wear something comfortable.

    • Anonymous

IN. She looks cute, breezy, appropriate. Don’t really like the color of the dress and I’d like it a whole lot more without those swoopy pockets. Love. The. Shoes. Love. And she totally rocks that hairstyle…good choice for her.

IN, but those pockets are making her look hippy, and she’s a tiny thing.  J’ADORE the shoes.

      • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

Is it the pockets doing that? I keep trying to pin down WHAT is making her look bigger or if the dress is just too big for her. I think it is a combo of the pockets and the length.

I have to say, it’s refreshing to see a dress that doesn’t come up to someone’s crotch.

    • Anonymous

That color clearly doesn’t go with her complexion, and there’s nothing to break it, even in the shoes. She’s all beige.

    • Anonymous

Love this look (probably because I own the dress)! IN.

    • Anonymous

IN. Very cute dress and shoes, suits the occasion.
      Good color on her.
A bracelet and a bit wider belt couldn’t have hurt though.

      • Anonymous

Agree completely. A wider belt would have added a lot of interest and broken up that long swath of monocolor.

Nevertheless, I think she looks fresh and pretty, and I adore the shoes!  IN.

Out.  She is pretty, and skinny, and rich.  She can manage to get something that doesn’t look like a tablecloth from the 70’s.

      • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly. Honestly, it also makes her look broad which she certainly isn’t. Not to mention her makeup and hair, which isn’t helping the situation. And really there is demure, which I like, and then there’s a bit sad and listless. Out.

    • Anonymous

I just wish the skirt were a little shorter. I’m not talking gyno-length like some of these girls wear; just a nice youthful knee-length or a little above. I think the hair looks cute and I do like that she doesn’t slap on 10 pounds of make-up. She’s young and beautiful, so she certainly doesn’t need it. I hate the shoes, though. They look so heavy. Still, I give her an IN.

      A. She looks adorable here, and … B. What is it about a designer launch party that everybody doesn’t get? The whole point of a celebrity attending is that they wear something from the line. Without seeing the whole line, I’ll bet much or all of it was in this color palette, this length, this vibe. It’s not like she can throw on a hot pink Versace and go to this launch. And what’s with all the comments about teachers? When did it become the rule that teachers should dress in comfortable, tasteful clothes and longer skirts … but everyone else has to dress like Beyoncé? This was probably a daytime event, it’s late summer/early fall, and she looks pretty and approachable in a dress a real person could actually wear in their everyday life. That’s terrific, IMHO.

I don’t know if she’s a dancer or not, but a lot of the dancers I know wear t-straps for comfort.

On a side note: Is that not the cutest little step & repeat you’ve ever seen? It looks like it could go in your handbag so you could carry it around and have impromptu red carpets at a moment’s notice.

I say In because because hey, maybe she just like’s older, more mature style’s and maybe that’s her personality as well. She could very well be an old soul who doesn’t want to dress like a typical starlet. So seeing that she is almost always dressed nicely, styled well and seems happy with how she looks I give her an in.

Just got home from shoe shopping (shoeless. Lord, what ugly stuff is out there now), and even I–at 50+ wouldn’t wear T-straps.  And even I, at 50+ (I’m being kind) could wear that dress, which means it’s a curious choice for a beautiful young starlet.  How old is she??

On the other hand, I am just t-h-i-s shy of 50.  And that’s what she looks like. OUT!

OUT. Drab and colorless. This could work on an Alexa Chung type of girl, but not Dianna. She can’t really rock the wash-and-air-dry hair or non-existent makeup, either. Points for the supercute shoes, though.

IN, but only by a slight margin.

i’d have lke to see this in a red (even a burgundy would’ve been nice if CFM red is too racy), and it would have been a full-on in. but overall it’s a nice dress and fits well, and she can work that length unlike many other actresses.

kinda missing the pink hair, tho. ;D

    • Anonymous

I like the dress, but it seems too long to me.  Of course, it’s too long on the model as well, and that seems to be “the length” these days.  But I just can’t.

The shoes are…I mean..I know people who wear clothes that those shoes make me think of…hard to explain…it’s been a long week… but it’s like…back in the 70s..and then the 90s..and natural look…camping in the Badlands…weave their own alpaca fur..macrobiotic….here try some spelt bread…really it’s good once you get used to it….but not….they aren’t…sorry they just don’t work for me.

      So out.

I think she looks great, very fresh and simple with just a touch of funky in the shoes.  The color is great on her, back when I had hair, it was her color and this brown was always a great compliment.  I understand the frustration with her usual red carpet choices but for this event, this is a great dress.

Some color somewhere would have helped this out – maybe a bracelet or something and perhaps a berry stain on her lips if she doesn’t want to do a full face of color?  Also, the shoes might not feel as matchy matchy if the hem had been a smidge higher.

Ohhhhh, this is a difficult decision for me.  The top half is quite cute in a laid-back way that I love, but as soon as I scroll down below the waist my eyes begin to burn.  The pockets, the length, the wrinkly buttons… this is a skirt I would find at St. Vinny’s that had been donated by someone’s grandmother.  And I’m sorry, but i find the shoes hideous.  They are unflattering and hairy.  I think the bad is going to outweigh the good for me on this one.  OUT.

In, but mostly because of the shoes.

OUT. That dress is too old for her.

I like this dress a lot, but she’s not the right type of girl to wear it. Also, come on, this is the red carpet, and she looks like she’s in a vacation, cute shoes and all. I will have to give it an OUT.

Cute shoes, but the overall effect is, as you say, drab.  Out.

IN, I think she looks fantastic. It’s nice to see a demure young woman who isn’t covered in ringlets and glitter (Love you, Taylor!). She has class.

    • Anonymous

Out. I like that she isn’t slinging her T & A in everyone’s faces, but I’d have worn that dress to work in the late 70’s or early 80’s (with less interesting and way cheaper shoes) and with the same impression that maybe the skirt is too long – or she had to go a size up and the next size was a tad too big (see crumples under her left arm) and that she should have ironed the placket all the way down to the hem.

NOTHING I recognize from my work wardrobe before 1985 (when I first started to think about work dressing as an investment) shall ever be a red carpet “n.”

In. I guess. That dress – the entire outfit – is more for me. A redhead with twenty years on her. She looks cute don’t get me wrong and I am with the masses: I so appreciate her not going slutty. But come on sweetie, you are not going to regret showing a little leg in your twenties. In fact, you’ll regret it if you don’t.

Very cute. I think this is one of the best she’s looked, and I love the color.

This is not fabulous and it’s mainly because of the shoes. And also….that dress could be cute but it needs refining….her hair is nice and ditto make-up but lacks punch.

The shoes aren’t enough to bring any life to this look.  Needs a colorful or sparkly accessory.

What’s up with the Jodie Foster Freaky Friday hair?

    • Anonymous

She looks like she’s going to work. It’s just too casual for even the casual red carpet. Plus, I hate the color on her and don’t like the shoes. Gotta say, it’s OUT for me.

    • irielle

Cool shoes! I don’t usually like t-straps either. These would have been good for Comic Con. Actually, this whole ensemble would have been good for Comic Con since that’s more casual, and the shoes remind me of a video game.

    • Anonymous

Looks better without the belt, but it’s a cute enough dress (up top, at least) and the shoes are dreamy. What the hell… IN.

I love this outfit, but it feels more like kick-ass third grade teacher than red carpet.  DA should take a page from Carey Mulligan’s book – there’s a way to do demure that still has glamour.

Not sure. When I first saw this, I thought, “Cute! I’d wear that!” But I’m a 47-year-old librarian, so…….

    • Katie Truax

In, but think it would be much improved with a shorter hem.

    • Anonymous

I actually think the belt and shoes ruined this. On the model, it has a kind of industrial, I work as a mechanic on an aircraft carrier but I’m up for a night out kind of feel. The belt and the illusion it gives of slight bagging around the waist make Dianna’s look like housewife on the go. Or an extra with the credit “Secretary #4″. If it was styled more like the model presentation, I think it would have been great.

      Out. But only just.

    • Anonymous

She’s wearing a dress by the designer for the launch — you want her to wear a D&G minidress made out of paisley scarves?  Hmmm…actually, that might have been really cute on her.  I’m giving her a conditional IN because the dress and the shoes are damned adorable–but never wear this color again, Ms. Agron.  Promise?

    • Anonymous

IN. Cute little dress but I hate those shoes. It looks like she is wearing couch cushions on her feet. I’m not feeling the love for them.

I don’t mind the hair but the shoes are blech and the dress is a little too long for my liking.  The color of the dress doesn’t bother me though.  I also am not bent out of shape over the lack of make-up.  I am a fan of natural-ish in non-glam scenarios.  But I really can’t get behind those shoes.  Still, not an out, but this is more of a PASS than an IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

This is a nothing look.  She doesn’t look dressed, really.  It’s a schmatta she would wear to dinner with a friend.  If it were red, maybe, or saturated blue, she might look a little more snappy.  This is boooooooooooring.

In! She doesn’t dress like a star, but if she were a normal person walking down the street in this get-up, she’d definitely catch my eye, for all the right reasons. Love how she dresses so demurely compared to a load of other starlets.

They are NOT cute shoes, and she needs to get her hand out of her pocket! …But I grant her a begrudging IN, because the fit and proportion on the dress is great.

    • http://twitter.com/Ash2046 Ashley Wu

The shoes are ugly, I thought those were Tibetan eyes from far

    • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

I feel like the dress is wearing her rather than she’s wearing the dress. Pairing it with those shoes is a plus, as opposed to the dreadful ankle boots worn by the model. But couldn’t she wear one piece of statement jewelry to dress it up a bit, like a stylish, chunky bracelet of some type? As it is, it looks like she wandered over from her errand to get Starbucks for everyone in the office. I’m more inclined to give her a IN than an OUT, though, for at least the cute shoes with the dress.

    • Anonymous

That’s a lot of skirt. Still,  I like her outfit — shoes, belt, and the hair too. The shoes are color matchy, yeah, but the unusual print and material of the uppers (what ARE they made of?) takes the curse off. They aren’t David’s Bridal DTM by any means.

    • Rachelle Neame

It’s a little bit cute. The problem with her demure style is that I find Dianna Agron just so gosh-darned boring. She’s like Taylor Swift, but looking at her makes me fall more asleep.

I think she has the raw looks that could really give her a great, stylish and edgy, head-turning look. BUT. It’s just not happening.

Sorry Dianna, but this is OUT!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

I love the shoes. I’m meh on the dress. She’s too short and not stick-like enough for the bulk and the length of it.

Still, the overall look is fine. She gets an IN from me, but just barely. The shoes save her.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KEYJDIENR5MRK2NXJYKNOLWDFE Alexandria

IN. I’m having a love affair with those shoes

    • Anonymous

She looks like a seventh grade history teacher on the first day of school.  At least she doesn’t look slutty and I know there’s something to be said for that.

    • Anonymous

i think those shoes are hideous! the pattern kind of looks like skull & crossbones, then it sort of looks like birds, then you realize it’s nothing.  or is it birds?  they’re driving me crazy!

      • Anonymous

I felt exactly the same way about those shoes.  In the end, they look like they come from Hot Topic.

    • Anonymous

IN. This is a refreshingly down-to-earth change of pace from what we usually see in celebrity-ville. Don’t get me wrong, I love fantasy frocks and divalicious starlets tarted up to the teeth as much as the next minion, but sometimes a bit of palate-cleansing is in order.

    • Anonymous

She looks fresh and pretty.  Love the hair and makeup.  IN.

    • http://twitter.com/qrter Alexander Peterhans

It’s quite a nice look, but that belt makes it look plain – without it, it would be more of a statement.

So that makes it an OUT for me, sadly.

    • Mary McClelland

blech out.  A poop colored table cloth with pockets.  I think these were called “housedresses” in Betty Draper’s time…

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I love, love, love the shoes but the dress looks like something I’d wear to work. Which means it’s a nice dress but not really something I’d imagine a celebrity would wear. Still, it’s a nice look and I appreciate that she’s not all about boobs and arse.
