In or Out: Christina Hendricks in Vivienne Westwood

Posted on September 14, 2011

Oh, Miss Christina. Just what are we going to do with you?

Christina Hendricks in Vivienne WestwoodChristina Hendricks at the New York premiere of “I Don’t Know How She Does It” in a Vivienne Westwood gown.

It’s a great color on her. We like the drape in the bodice and the upper part of the skirt. But that hem is just plain weird.  And the shoes look kind of cheap. Satin shoes with a satin dress comes off way too bridesmaid-y. The makeup looks good and the hair, while a little messy, suits her. The jewelry’s a bit on the ostentatious side but a girl’s allowed to deck herself in diamonds if she wants to for her movie premiere. Besides, she’s just the kind of gal who can work a really luxe look.

Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room.

We don’t like to impose rules on ladies, but generally speaking, if you can look down and lick the top of your boobs, your dress is too tight. They’re her most famous feature and there’s nothing wrong with showing them off, but walking around like you shoved two down pillows down the front of your dress is not the best way to highlight the goods. Fix that hem and get that bust fitted and she’d look pretty spectacular, but both elements are so distracting that they kind of ruin the look.

Vote Now!

IN! Flaunt ‘em if you’ve got ‘em, I say!

OUT! Baby heads! She’s got baby heads in her dress!

In other bitchy news, Salma Hayek’s attempt at edgy and Tilda Swinton’s dressing gown both got big ol’ OUTs.

what baby heads? they’re probably the size of her head…

I’ve got big girls, too, and I’m still not in favor of the grapefruit/basket ball look.

      • Anonymous

Me, too.  What kind of foundation garment is she wearing that shoves them up to her collar bone?  That’s just adding insult to injury.

        • Anonymous

A very uncomfortable one, I would imagine.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jude-Brown/1350939326 Jude Brown

Here’s what’s really weird: I believe these are Christina’s natural breasts.

Why she’d wear a dress that makes them look like porn star implants, is beyond me.

      • Anonymous

Exactly.  Sophia Loren rocked the ”big-girls-in-a-décolleté-red-satin-dress” without making an embarrassment of herself.   http://www.psychics.co.uk/images/sophia_loren.jpg
With ample cleavage, as with spectacular jewels, ofttimes less really is more.
Plus, Sophia’s were her own, so no basketballs pushed precariously close to her clavicle.  Props to Christina though, for showing up so wrinkle free.

Great photo of Sophia Loren, and so proves your point.

I think Vivienne Westwood is overrated as a designer of well-made clothes. She’s more about shock and flash, than well-thought and -constructed. Let’s not forget her last muse was Pamela Anderson.

She is an expert at draping.  You may want to look at her garments from the perspective of craftsmanship rather than getting dazzled by “what you’ve heard.”  No one beats her at moulding fabric to the body.

          • Anonymous

Totally agree. Just looking at the way the draping lies on top of that corset without distorting is impressing me. I really want to see the innards of it! Her tailoring is quite something too. I think often people can’t see beyond the less conventional aspects to the underlying skill.

As a very tiny but busty gal myself, I’ve always HATED the ‘wear your boobs on your shoulders’ look. I hate it at formal events, I hate it at costume parties, I hate it at galas, and I LOATHE it at Renn faires. Fair lady, this tavern is crowded enough without me bumping into thine ill-contained meat-sacs. Prithee, wear something that fitteth properly. My pidgin Elizabethan is probably all over the place. I never studied it, frankly.
Come on, ladies. We can show some cleavage, but let’s temper the flame it with a bit of class, shall we? I’ve never understood that kind of exposure as something positive. I would be mortified if I showed that much cleavage in a public venue, on accident or purpose.

Christina, you can look so much fiercer and sexier than this! No no no! Fire your stylist!

Her makeup, however, looks incredible. She looks good, overall, I think she just needs to wear dresses that fit her bustline properly.

        • Anonymous

With you on this. I’m a size 4, 32D and I’m not comfortable showing more than the slightest hint of cleavage.

I’m going to go for IN, but just barely.  Fix the hem, get better shoes, done.  The bust doesn’t bother me so much.

    • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

ditto, I also vote IN… though I’m glad for once that’s not my rack. Bet they were tired by the end of the evening!

      • Anonymous

Bet her corset was killing her by the end of the evening.
Supporting those girls (mine are about that size) is no task for a simple strapless bra… you have to do some heavy lifting there.

    OUT, too bridesmaid-y.

Her breasts look like she proofed them too long in the oven. OUT

eeek!  it’s just….bordering on vulgar.  uncomfortable.  the shine of the dress isn’t helping.

Ahaha, baby heads. Seriously, that looks painful. Props for dealing with that all night, thumbs down for aesthetic appeal.

oh my, OUT. red satin needs to be perfection to work, and perfection this is not. and the cleavage is creepy as hell.
is this really a westwood? i havent seen her latest collection but this doesnt look anything like her style.

    • Anonymous

Well, models don’t have boobs so the bodice probably looks very different on them. Maybe Westwood wasn’t designing for women with boobs, which is why this looks so bad.

Out – her boobs look uneven in some of the pictures which is even more distracting than their size and uplift for me.

Which is why she gets an OUT. If Westwood is designing for flat chested women then the well endowed, like Christina, shouldn’t wear her clothes.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

I don’t know what year you’re talking about but this is EXACTLY what Vivienne Westwood is known for and that is going back to the early ’80s.

      • Anonymous

Yep.  I have a Westwood jacket from a few years back–small in the waist, large in the chest.  Westwood likes playing with an exaggerated hourglass.  The dress should have worked, but wasn’t fitted right.

  • Anonymous

I love her and want to look like her just not in this get up. Out.

  • http://nobeatenpath.com Forrestblogging

Wow. That is just stare-worthy. Why did she bother with the make-up when no-one is going to be looking at her face?
    A total OUT.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I don’t mind her having that much of her bust showing, but the way they’re bound up there is not pretty — if she’d worn a slightly looser support, she could still have displayed as much without it being quite so… RenFaire wench.

  • Anonymous

Oh Christina if you could just cover those bad boys up for once, just so we can focus on your pretty face, we promise we won’t forget them. Those chesticles are forever ingrained in our minds, don’t worry.

    • Anonymous

chesticles–HA love it! And yes, I scrolled down and my reaction was , ‘oh good gracious’ (I’m at work, gotta keep it ladylike)

    OUT! Twice!!

  • Anonymous

Out. She’s rapidly becoming nothing but tits. You really can’t say it better than “Fix that hem and get that bust fitted and she’d look pretty spectacular,
but both elements are so distracting that they kind of ruin the look.” The distraction is so cheap and pandering that she’s every bit as much an out at Bai Ling at her worst.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think that’s really fair. Yes, the cleavage is distracting, but — speaking as a bosomy gal myself — designers don’t know how to cut and fit for larger women.  There is no way that a dress cut like that will ever flatter the twins, but it’s not fair to say that it’s “cheap and pandering”. She strikes me more as a person who just has no idea how to find clothes that work with her chest. It’s a…ahem…bigger problem than you’d think.

Out, with a plea to find herself some gays who know how to dress boobs.

      • Deana Grenberg

I don’t think it’s the dress that’s causing the bondage–she’s got some evil monster of a foundation garment in there.  It just looks painful, not sexy.

It looks like she’s got an ass on her chest.

        sixgables

        • Anonymous

I agree about the foundation garments, I think she’s become very fond of wearing corsets under her clothes, and while it gives her torso a nice line she always chooses corsets with too much lift. Little known fact: much like bras, there are corset styles that de-emphasis the bust while still giving you a nice shape. Look into it C.H! Your mammeries will thank you.

          • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Ah, but she doesn’t want to de-emphasize her bust. She paid for them and she’s going to make sure we all see them. She just doesn’t realize how uncomfortable and comical they look.

          • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

‘s far as the record shows, Thing 1 and Thing 2 on La Hendricks are natural.

          • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

I’ve seen her earlier work and she’s definitely not that big. I’ve noticed that previously demure women wear plunging necklines after they’ve been “enhanced.” Maybe she needs to be X-rayed a la Kim K’s rear end. (Just kidding. Bottom line–it’s her body and only she knows for sure. It’s really none of our business, but it’s hard not to comment when they’re so out there.)

          • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

            Very true!

          • http://www.facebook.com/StephanieMClarkson Stephanie Clarkson

Sorry, Nancy. Take a look at: http://img9.imagevenue.com/aAfkjfp01fo1i-20410/loc9/67589_ChristinaHendricksBeggarsandChoosers.avi_000060816_123_9lo.jpg

That was her in 2000, so she was 24 or so. It was her second notable show (if one calls Undressed on MTV in 1999 as notable).

This was her on Undressed: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l7946rExoP1qb7jn2o1_500.jpg

Not quite as cleavagy, but I also think she was about a size 6 or 8 then, not the 14 she is now. Still, her breasts are definitely prominent; she is standing straight up and they are a couple inches in front of her face. So I think that you are misremembering her earlier work (btw, fashion photos of her from 2002 when she played Saffron definitely show her with a lot of cleavage, but she went braless as Saffron, if you will recall).

Yes, they were smaller when she was much thinner, but even then, like her eyes, the Right One is noticeably bigger than the other one. Generally, when a gal goes through the trouble of changing them, they make then bigger AND the same size.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=721516627 Shez Batha

I don’t believe the corset is necessarily painful. Silhouettes such as these are about creating illusions and done in a contemporary manner needn’t be uncomfortable at all.

      • Anonymous

If I were her friend, I’d call Stacy and Clinton immediately.

      • Anonymous

I’m not giving her a pass on “designers don’t know how to cut and fit for larger women” anymore.  I think it’s true, and I’m pretty bosomy myself with a waist that’s small in comparison to my bust and hips.  It’s hard to dress both the boobs and the waist at the same time – dress the waist and the boobs like gigantic, dress the boobs and the waist looks thick.  But I’m buying clothes off the rack and Christina isn’t.  And she can try something on and say no.  I imagine she has a stylist — someone whose job it is to go out and find something else.  Or she could – gasp! – buy a few dresses so they can be altered to fit her.  I would guess that she would have no problem finding a designer or two who would fall all over themselves to make some clothes for her.

First thing that came to mind was “DIRTY PILLOWS!!!”  I need to watch Carrie again soon…  Anyways, out.  She’s probably like me and was born with a c-cup that developed into off the charts.  She should know how to dress for her boobs by now.  Total fail – OUT.

The Selma Hayek dress that seemed to box her boobs in even closer to her face than this outfit does with Christina came immediately to mind. In the case of Hayek, her breasts were even more prominent but in a weird way.
I love your measure of licking the top of the boobs as a no; however, better that than that they can speak to the belly. I have to say “in” to this outfit because of 1) the super color 2) her ease with her figure and wearing the dress 3) how the curve of her bodice/breasts is gracefully echoed in the fold and drape, so that I don’t find the hem fatally distracting.

  • Anonymous

In I think she looks great.  Not perfect by any means but definitely great. From the waist down she looks really slim for her.

I can see her lying back in her satin dress, in a room where you do what you don’t confess… Gordon Lightfoot says it all.

How I love the new rule. If you can lick your boobs, your dress is too tight. Brilliant! That dress is a gorgeous color and if it were a floor length gown, I might forgive the uber boobs. But as it is, regretfully, she’s OUT. But what a goddess she is.

Is it me, or does she look like she has enhanced nature’s gift?  I know she was large to begin with, but the perfect roundness at the top looks a little synthetic to me.

    • Anonymous

that’s doable with the right bra and no surgery–I’ve done it. Pretty amazing what an expensive bra will do–but it doesn’t make it tasteful.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Breda Smith

That’s exactly the problem. Whether or not your boobs are fake, you don’t want them to LOOK fake. Here they don’t even look like they’re attached to her body.

    • Anonymous

Any corset that pushes up too much will do that. Even on fairly modestly sized boobs.

  • Anonymous

From the neck up she’s breathtaking.  Ditto from the neck down, but in an entirely different way.  Those are perhaps the worst shoes I’ve ever seen on a celebrity.  The hem of the dress is, as noted, really wonky looking.  And satin!  Why?  I always cringe when PR designers gravitate to the satin fabric at Mood because while it’s beautiful, it almost always looks cheap and awful when made into a dress.  And showing that much cleavage is vulgar and gross.  OUT.  This woman has the worst taste.  She really cannot dress herself at all.

    • Anonymous

She almost always wears awful shoes.  Look back at other pictures of her.  I really wish I knew why…

That  hemline is just a disaster! (TITS!) And I really do not like the shoes at all, with this outfit (TITS!) or any outfit. (TITS!)  The hair is a little less polished (TITS!) than I would (TITS!) like to see on her, a bustier (TITS!), curvy woman wearing a (TITS!) slightly messy do (TITS!) runs the risk of looking “floozy”. I can’t stand it.  A woman as beautiful as her should never get within 100 yards of a red carpet without looking smashing and she simply fails here.  Those shoes are positively orthopaedic and that hem is 3 kinds of wonky.  Showcase the boobs, be my guest, but this just looks cheap.

OUT – she always gets it wrong. And the things she does to shove her breasts in everyone’s face, including hers, is just frigging weird. I also think it’s a terrible color on her – she tried to match it with her, but it’s off.

I never knew that until I saw a Kevin Smith special. A British lady was talking about “Fanny Fun” and Kevin warned her that if she mentions that in the U.S., guys are going to be expecting something quite different. Out. I don’t know what she can do, but showing off more than 12 inches of breast has to be borderline obscene.

I feel bad because that may be the most beautiful and flattering color I’ve ever seen on Christina. Her hair & makeup look better than I’ve ever seen them on the red carpet as well.

That hem sucks. Those shoes suck.

I don’t have Hendricks pillows, but I’m in range, and I can see what she’s doing here. The dress is not too tight. This is an undergarment issue. I’m almost certain she’s doing strapless corsetry, replacing real support from above and around with cinching and push up boning. You can do strapless with a big chest if the back and sides are super-supportive, but she’s working with a waist-cincher and a demi-cup; no back or side, just under and around. This is something I’ve seen her do before. The breasts actually arent’ squished; they’re resting on top of the push-up corset and they’re quite comfortable; in fact, I bet she feels great. Nonetheless, it’s just not an acceptable way to go out in public.

I love you Christina, with my whole heart, but you are OUT.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

As someone who’s worn many a corset (typecast as busty wench in my acting days) I think you’re right.

Unfortunately I don’t know much about how Westwood constructs her fabulous (aside from that godawful hem) frocks but presumably the corset is actually built into the dress rather than being a separate undergarment…?

I suspect that the corset is built into the dress rather than being something from her closet. Based on that neckline, I figure that Westwood wanted to showcase the wearer’s bust and so would have added built-in undergarments to achieve the look.

Sadly, CH’s bust is much too large for that type of corset so she looks like a caricature of herself in this dress. Had the corset been altered to do a little minimizing before she wore the dress she would have been so much better.

Those shoes are too shiny for this dress.

She’s so beautiful and I wish that she had some gays to help her dress perfectly for her figure. OUT.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, definitely built into it I’d say. I’d love to see the inside of that dress. Getting the bodice draping to lie properly once it’s on the body is no mean feat.

    • Anonymous

Thanks to you (and Eclectic Mayhem) for the insight into corsetry for the generously-endowed. It may well never come in handy, but I feel somehow more competent now, like I do knowing how to change the car’s oil filter, though I will probably never again do so myself.

      • Anonymous

I’d like to challenge that and say that although it’s no mean feat, the draping is an art in itself and can be easily achieved.

    • http://profiles.google.com/marteani Barbara Guttman

I’ve been suspecting, the more I look at these photos, that the problem with her breasts here is mostly the lighting.  This, and a few of her other looks, is an outfit I’d like to see in less distracting lighting.  What works for the stars’ faces doesn’t do them any favors elsewhere.  Bony stars look bonier, busty stars look, well, like Christina.

I’m inclined to give her an out from the knees down, but I’m conflicted about everything else.

    • Anonymous

It’s an 18th century stays shape, VW uses it a lot. Like an upside down cone, so it pushes up the way rather than cupping like a Victorian shape. The dress will be draped onto the corset.

  • Suitcase Gnome

Her bust looks cartoonish to me – like an anime character come to life. You can treat your girls better than that, Christina.

  • Anonymous

The dress is nice, except for the hem. I don’t mind that it’s shiny and the color is great. But the baby heads and the hem are ruining it all. All I can see is boobs. Out.

  • Anonymous

She looks like she’s presenting a gift of rare albino cantaloupes nestled in satin cushioning.

So unfortunate because (despite the the hem) she is SO BEAUTIFUL here. I think the messy hair works and she’s just fab. Excepting the fruit of the month presentation.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

It’s nice to have somewhere to rest your own chin though, especially if the movie is a bit dull…!

TLo – It was lovely to talk to you both on the radio yesterday, sorry I couldn’t come up with a more original question – I was a little starstruck and my mind went blank!

Out.  Emphatically so.  We all know that you have a major pair, hon.  Now people on planets circling other stars know it as well.  The only redeeming feature of this dress is the color which I agree with TLo is delicious.  The rest is just a mess on you.  Badly fitted bodice, wrong length, and WAY too shiny.

Your comments are spot on as usual. But I love the color and style of the dress on her so much that I want to give her an IN for effort alone.

  • Anonymous

I’m with you OUT. One of these days I’d like to see her in a simple gown – she always overdoes it which doesn’t highlight her um assets as it were. Janie Bryant should style her exclusively  - she knows what she looks good in.

    • Anonymous

She’s worn a couple of Siriano’s gowns to awards shows and they’ve worked pretty well for her, too. They haven’t been perfect, but I recall a black one in particular that lifted and cinched in all the right places and she looked stunning.

It’s really too bad, because the colour and draping are gorgeous and her hair and make-up are pretty much perfect. I could even forgive the horrible shoes (maybe) if I didn’t so badly want to yank the dress up six inches. That would get the hem where it needs to be (even if it didn’t fix its stupid shape) and cover the girls enough so that they’d look spectacular rather than scary.

  • mellbell

Out (mostly for the sad-looking satin). It will be interesting see how she plays it for the premiere of Drive.

  • Anonymous

She’s so beautiful, and the color of this dress is so pretty, but then she decided to just go for it and squeeze her giant boobs into the thing and step out in public and this is what we get. It’s so vulgar and inappropriate that it makes her look like a fool. I feel sad for her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

Gorgeous person, not so gorgeous outfit. Baffled by the hem on that dress- it looks badly made. And oh, her poor, poor tittays. Mine hurt just thinking about it. OUT!

Out. The hem looks like it’s been tacked up with safety pins (and in the wrong place). And did she even look in the mirror? The one boob is pushed up higher than the other. That is some lopsided cleavage.

  • Anonymous

    Definitely out. Seriously.

  • Kayley Maybe

OK, shoes are hideous, and while I understand that she is playing to her “fan base” (or more likely her twins’ “fan base”) this look just isn’t classy.  I saw a picture of her in this outfit next to SJP, who is about boob-level with her, and SJP just looked uncomfortable.  There are better ways to show off her amazing figure…OUT!

  • S. Jenna Lutz

It scares me a bit when I see her like this – I mean, for pities sake, according to all the costume sites online, she’s only a Dcup! I’m a natural freaking F/G and I somehow manage to contain the girls! EVEN when working Ren Faires and in full on Wench kit complete with leather corset! Either she simply wants to have her bust look like it about to, well, bust out of her clothes or she is being help captive by a team of sadistic stylists who refuse to allow her a good bra.

Either someone send help or stop taking her picture. Please. She is too pretty for this crap.

  • Anonymous

out – pretty color and nice draping (except for the hem), but the fit at the top is so wrong.

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind flaunting the goods, but I must note that it’s not the dress holding them up. I am, in fact, completely flummoxed as to how she’s doing that. My current theory is helium-filled implants.

I think the color of the dress is great with her skin, but it’s fighting with her hair. I’m not always against redheads in pink/rose/red, but it’s tricky, and I don’t think it’s working here. The spectacle between the dress and the hair may be sufficient distraction, but I hate to think how that’s working from the back.

The hem is completely effed up. I have to assume she tore it while getting out of the limo, because I can’t imagine that every single person from the designer to her dressers to her looked at that hem and said, “Yeah, okay, that works!”

I give her an OUT, alas. It’s a lukewarm OUT, consisting of a lot of “If you did this and this and this….”  Nothing is more tragic than something that almost works.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

You could be on to something with the helium implants!

If you look very closely at the bodice, however, you can see just a hint of the boning that is either built into the dress or is part of an accompanying undergarment designed to go with the frock (not every corset could handle that neckline).

    • Anonymous

The dress is built onto a corset. Westwood usually sticks with that conical 18th century shape which pushes the bust up that way.

      • Anonymous

Thank you for the explanation. I was scratching my head over this. I’ve never had occasion to wear a dress with the corset built in, so I had no idea how it would work.

        • Anonymous

No problem :) I wouldn’t mind seeing the internal construction of that myself. It may be baring too much at the top, but it’s scaffolding ability is impressive!

  • Anonymous

Out.  And it pains me to do it, because you’re right, she’s so close to in.  But no, the boobs, no matter how large, are not intended to be a shelf.  She’s about 6 cm from a wardrobe malfunction.

But definitely try that corset look again, CH, because it suits you very well.

  • MilaXX

Out! That hem & those shoe… I can’t. She’s in the latest Glamour (I think) with Rhianna & SJP and she looks so pretty. Why doesn’t she get one of the stylist from the fashion shoots to dress her. She’s just too pretty to look like such a hot mess all the time.

    TLOL funniest OUT ever!

  • Anonymous

That is a great colour on her and her hair and makeup are gorge. The shoes are awful and the hem is unfortunate, but the neckline is interesting. As a busty woman, I salute the amount of support that dress seems to have – my boobs do that when they’re strapped into a sports bra, and it’s really not that uncomfortable. It is a bit much cleavage-wise, and I think if the neckline had been a couple of inches higher it would have been fine. It’s not the high breasts that are concerning (heck, sizable boobs can be pushed up to your collar bones), it’s that we’re very close to nipple territory.

All of which is to say this is an OUT, but mostly just because it seems costumey.

Baby heads–has to be one of my favorites you’ve ever written. Having said that, those baby heads really are beautiful and I support her playing them up, but this is a bit much.  I agree with all of your criticism, but I also think that the color is terrible on her and I HATE those shoes.

  • Judy_J

Christina is so beautiful, but she seems to have a blind spot when it comes to finding clothing that flatters her figure.  I’ve always been on the small side, so I can’t speak from experience with regard to fitting large breasts, but it seems to me they look better when they are allowed to slope naturally, not forced up and over the top of the neckline.  It looks a bit painful, if you ask me.  And the hemline on that dress is just awful.  Looks like she got it caught in the car door.  Shoes are bad, too.  I’m giving this an OUT.

I feel sorry for her because she models for Westwood jewellery now and doesn’t really have much choice in what she wears.  Westwood tends to be big on the bustiers in her dresses, which don’t flatter a lot of body types.  I don’t really think she makes much that would flatter Christina in the clothing line. I also dislike the hem and shoes. Poor girl. Not a lot of stuff is made for busty women these days.

OUT. It’s very bordello. I’ve come to detest satin dresses and I wish somebody would put them ALL in a big pile and burn them – keeping a safe distance from what I’m sure would be toxic smoke. Hate the shoes. Make-up and hair are really pretty.

As for the boob situation – I just don’t think it looks good to have baby heads coming out of your dress! Plus, that’s gotta be uncomfy for an entire evening. Maybe she just did the photo gig, ditched the movie, went home and put on her jammies and watched TV.

In. Shoes are ugly, but the hemline doesn’t bother me on her. I’d say that her figure allows her to get away with odd draping. It has a Greek goddess appeal, in my eyes. Shoes are meh, but she looks lovely and that was my first thought. The shiny jewelry fits the shiny dress, and keeps it from feeling too bridesmaid-y.

Besides, isn’t the outfit all about making a statement and getting people to notice? People would most likely castigate her for covering herself up, if she wasn’t popping out all over the place.

I feel for the gal, I really do.  She is most certainly wearing some type of corset, her breasts are resting fairly comfortably (if they were being squeezed, you’d see the line of that coming from the dress.  The unpleasant shadowing up top is what makes them look squeezed).  The problem, I suspect, is that she’s wearing that corset too small in the cups.  Almost all her bra problems appear to be that she’s being fitted too small in the cups.  Going up a size would have them roughly in the same area but not quite so pressed together.

You have money, Christina.  Go to a real bra store with real bra people, try on several sizes, find a style that works comfortably for you.  Clearly you need a small band with large cups, don’t let anyone tell you that’s you can scale up the size.

I’m not in favor of minimizers because at her size that’s just going to be uncomfortable, hot and mean.  Those strap you down and if you think it’s hard to fit a dress with lots of cleavage, try it with extra splooshed out chest all over your ribs.  You look barrel-chested.

I just don’t know how to vote.  I just generally dislike the satin that is appearing these days and then for this particular dress it appears that in order for the shiney shiney to work properly any woman must be corseted to within an inch of her life.  I’m afraid I think this is a bad dress choice for CH because it is so unforgiving to the bosom.  In a smaller breasted woman it would look tacky enough along with the spectacular because the breasts have to be held up above that bodice.  On CH it is unfortunate.

As a fellow full figured gal (paging Jane Russell), it’s great to flaunt the girls but they shouldn’t be entering the room a good 30 seconds before the rest of you does.  That dress is not flattering at all and unfortunately this seems to be more the rule than the exception for Ms. Hendricks on the red carpet.  She needs a styling intervention yesterday.

Even with the flaws, she looks gorgeous, and much better than she often does. I give it an in, even though that hemline is seriously wacky and the shoes are eh. As to the girls… well, she’s famous for them, and she shows them off from time-to-time. I’m inclined to give her a pass, even though they’re too much on display here. She hasn’t been on TV for a while (*grumble* stupid AMC *grumble), so  why shouldn’t she grab some attention?

  • Anonymous

Well damn, I can lick the top of my boobs as I sit here wearing my properly fitted $90 bra. They’re just that big. I will forever be an out lol I love the top part on her, though I would probably have made the dress be a size larger and her not pulled in quite so tight, but it is a gorgeous colour on her and the ladies for once are actually supported. Hate the hem and shoes though. When you have such big breasts, you finally just hit a point where you say fuck it and stop trying to disguise them.

Certain corsets are actually rather comfortable as they provide support that most undergarments don’t. You just don’t want to be tight laced to the point of constricted breathing.

  • Sara__B

OUT. If the bodice is so tight that your big beautiful boobs are exploding out the top, get the dress altered or choose a different dress. This is a perfect example of too much of a good thing. Her hair and makeup are working, the color is great, and the neckline is flattering (minus the baby heads), but the hem, shoes, and baby heads ruin it all.

Angels wept…Why, oh why can’t she get some help dressing for the red carpet? She’s so damn beautiful and built, but she almost always looks a hot mess. That is a great color on her, but it looks like her hem got caught in her stocking, and the double Baby Bjorn look is just wrong.

  • http://jessieliz.wordpress.com/ Super Red

Oh no. no, no, no, honeybear, no. the color is lovely, but honestly, the dress looks kind of cheap. Which isn’t a good thing when you’re wearing a Vivienne Westwood. Seriously though, there’s a difference between disguising your boobs and saying “LOOK! I have BOOBIES!!!” Something that had a lovely drape on her chest would still be flaunting, but not look so comical. The hem is very weird, and, it’s potentially just the light, but it looks badly sewn.

Its close.  I like the color, the hair and the makeup.  Purse and jewels are good, and I’m even willing to go with the satin shoes, since they contrast so nicely with the dress.  But the hem is just weird, and she needs to figure out how to show off her bust, instead of shoving it in your faces.

  • Anonymous

As a lady endowed with a large bust myself (I’d guess Christina and I are about of a size) I’m going to have to agree with HobbitGirl and call shenanigans on your new rule.  I just (in the privacy of my own windowless office) licked the top of my boob and I’m wearing a perfectly plain t-shirt bra with a v-necked shirt.  Sometimes the bigger ladies just ride high is what I’m saying.

And while there is such a thing as lifting without it looking painful, I struggle with the reality that bigger breasts just look more… there.  More apparent, more vulgar, more blatant, more whatever.  I could never, even with the best foundation garment in the WORLD, get away with many of the low cut looks favored by my smaller-busted friends.  Anything over 3 inches of cleavage looks trashy, but I can tell you I’ve got about 4 inches of cleavage without a bra and 6-8 with one.

Give the girl a break, because breasts like that just aren’t easy to work with.  (IN)

  • http://www.facebook.com/dalca4 Denise Alcantara

In. Just gotta say, as a girl with breasts about that size and strong believer in serious undergarments: she is not in any pain. That kind of support, holding the breasts up like that, is actually completely comfortable, and for a woman like her with a fairly short torso, also difficult to avoid if you don’t want the girls constantly obscuring your waist. It gives her a lovely, straight line along her sides and down to the center. She looks lovely. And, well she’s got ‘em…
But I do hate the shoes.

This could have been a total winner if the top were actually large enough to display breasts instead of baby heads and the hem didn’t look like it had been caught in her underwear during a trip to the ladies’ room.. I actually love this dress, it’s a great colour! The draping on the neckline should just have come up a bit higher. I hate the shoes though.

Westwood builds a lot of her designs on an 18th century stays shape, which is like an upside down cone, rather than a Victorian hour glass shape. It has the effect of pushing the bust up rather than cupping it, which is great at making a smaller bust look more buxom but not so flattering to a larger bust. As it’s based on a corsetted silhouette, saying it’s tight is a bit like saying 5″ heels are high.

She’s quite happy to flash a lot of cleavage so it doesn’t bother me. A bit higher with the draped neckline would’ve helped tremendously.

okay– as per the licking: some of us cant do anything else. if i put on anything other than a turtleneck or a t-shirt w/ a bra of any sort, i have cleavage. come to think of it–& i am not making this up–depending on the bra, depending on the t-shirt, sometimes even then. i’m built just like this. exactly. so much so that w/ red hair & heels, in LA, people will think i’m her, at least momentarily. i threw out my current crazy spouse & certainly anticipate this reaction, which will make him even more nuts than he is already. joy.

but, so help me, if vivienne westwood cant fit her, one or both of them is having some sort of problem {no pun intended}. looking at this, i cant tell precisely where it is, but it starts lower than the uplift, if that makes sense. yes, the top is a little too tight, maybe a quarter, half an inch & yes it is a little too low, maybe a half inch, inch. but if this is you, you want people to focus between yr hairline & where you begin to dislike yr midsection, & so help me, if that is yr goal this is pretty much just a variation on what yr gonna get no matter what you do.

i think the real trouble starts w/ the hem. she’s got good boning & good seaming thruout the bodice. she’s got a very nicely made edgy ruffle of distraction around the hips, which leads to that hem. somewhere in there things start getting wonky– i think it’s when asymmetry begins to run interference. in order to get to the asymmetry, VW had to fiddle around w/ the hipline & below. not only does that fiddling make the whole thing look wrinkled, & that in an odd focus-pulling way, but it ruins the fit. then there’s the hem, then oblivion. cos nobody really needs to talk about the shoes. nobody shouldve talked about them in the first place, except to direct someone to dispose of them. i cant believe VW even saw them. she cant have made them. please, please tell me she didnt.

&, so help me, this woman needs to look into an a-line skirt. doesnt matter if theyre à la mode she can make them au courant. they will look better on her. either that, or either she or her stylist need to look into what i will call the fat marilyn epoch. i mean, this is my figure from its thinnest to its fattest, i am not being mean, just honest. i’m not putting her down for having it, i have it too. but, so help me redux, how the h-e-double-toothpicks do i know how to deal w/ it better than someone who is currently –not in 1979 when only two hundred people worldwide knew who she was, but now when either she is or turned down becoming a knight of the realm– someone who is currently being handfitted in not t-shirts & bondage pants but satin gowns by the great vivienne westwood.

some like it hot is yr friend. i promise you.

I’ve unhelpfully decided that it’s Iut or Oun.

Okay, the hem is strange and the shoes are completely wrong for the whole look, but on to the elephants in the room…
Firstly, I have to disagree (as several others have) with your proposed rule, which I don’t think is really manageable by ladies of a larger nature, unless one happens to be wearing a neck-brace. Christina Hendricks has a difficult body to dress without looking like the label reads “100% Boob”, but especially so in an evening dress, since one has much fewer opportunities to do things to minimize the bust (like playing with layering, managing volume and structure, etc.). Everyone tends to assume that a larger breasted woman dressing in a way that shows off her chest is doing so on purpose – women (and gay men) tend to think she wants attention, and straight men think she wants their attention – but, if one is built like Christina, it’s just how clothes tend to look, unless one puts a lot of effort into not looking so bosomy. On the other hand, she’s rich and famous and has access to some of the best designers (and one would imagine stylists) in the world – yet she regularly dresses like Jessica Rabbit. This would tend to suggest she does so on purpose.

I understand and agree with her complaint that so much of the media focus is on her body: she absolutely should be able to dress the way she does and people should still focus on her as an actress – but that sadly isn’t the world we live in. It’s wonderful to be comfortable with your body and dress however you please, but you do have to take into consideration how other people will perceive you, even – no especially – if it’s inappropriate, because it affects you and it affects others. There are things that are important besides how you feel about yourself at the time.

And you know, I’ve never really understood the idea of “if you’ve got it, flaunt it”, because, well, it is not exactly precision-guided – you don’t get to pick whose attention you get and the likelihood that you’ll get someone’s attention is inversely proportional to the likelihood that you’ll want it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

Her body looks “heavy” and I don’t mean “fat” before the those with low self-esteem jump on that word.  She always appears uncomfortable in her own skin and that she’s dragging her body around.  It’s astonishing when other women say they’d “like a body like hers.”  Weird.

    • margaret meyers

You need to look at Milaxx’s link, above.  CH looks great in the pictures.
I think when she does it herself the results are very mixed.  When she has a stylist (like on Mad Men or in a photo shoot) she looks confident and fab.  I think CH looks lush and beautiful: there are lots of ways to look beautiful, and she is one of them.

Speaking as someone who has been to many a ren faire and goth club in her day, the boobs don’t bother me too much. On the other hand, satin (especially in such large quantities) almost always comes off looking cheap, and this is certainly no exception. Add to that the fact that there is way too much added bulk happening here for a lady who already has so many curves of her own, and what had the potential to be a decent look comes out decidedly OUT.

Is this more evidence that she doesn’t use a stylist?   And the shoes! They look like the “mules” women used to wear around the house.  I love her, but CH usually gets a couple of things wrong.  No stylist would have picked those shoes.

Sweetheart, not only is your dress Christmas wrapping paper on clearance, but your girls are so lopsided I’m frankly surprised you’re not leaning over to one side. It’s okay. Take a deep breath (or at least try in that straightjacket you’re wearing), and we’ll go home and start over, okay? Okay.

    OUT. :(

Makes Salma Hayek’s bodice look positively baggy.

“If you can look down and lick the top of your boobs, your dress is too tight”.

    Hahahaha!!!!  I love you two.

I want to see the bra that created that.

Her chest looks like a giant heart.  I think the looks really pretty (ignoring the hem), once you can tear your eyes away from that.

    Jessica Rabbit.

    OUT.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

There’s not one single thing that’s flattering about this look. Are we sure this is a mainstream movie star and not a porn star? Those tits look like shit. Voluptuous is one thing, these gazoonkas are another entirely. She’s just a disaster.

    Out with a capital titty.

  • Anonymous

christina’s supposed to be the role model for how to work a big bust in a classy way, without looking like a hooker…sadly she has an ass encased in satin under her neck.
    OUT.

  • Anonymous

Out, for all of the reasons you gave.

  • Miranda Loeber

I feel like this is the best possible situation in which to say: calm your tits, girl.

  • Anonymous

The comments on this look are cracking me up, and they are all so very true.
In the last picture she looks like a Victorian cabaret dancer, complete with come-hither face.  Her poor chest.  OUT.

  • http://profiles.google.com/richixcore Richi Robilotto

If she wants to show her tits, let her show her tits.
I mean, I honestly have no problem with that aspect. If she was going for “VA VA VOOM” then she hit the ball when it comes to the upper half of her body.

Know, even though I’m defending her boobage, I’m giving her an OUT, just because the bottom half ruins everything for me. The hem, and especially those shoes.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Out.  Could have been so much better with proper fit and hem.

  • Anonymous

It had such potential but she is OUT, just like her boobs.

  • Anonymous

As a woman with a nice rack (if I do say so myself), I feel that she cannot be comfortable having her chesticles smashed inward and upward.  Plus, it just looks so unnatural.

  • Anonymous

    out

  • Anonymous

I love boobies, but this gets an out.

  • Anonymous

My husband: “Oh my God, what’s wrong with her? That doesn’t look natural… at all.” And then he went back to making faces at the baby. Not baby heads. Our baby.

I can’t get over the tacky shiny combo. Also the hills are a little too alive. OUT

“Also the hills are a little too alive.”
THIS made me laugh, thank you!  =D

  • Anonymous

OK, this is just ridiculous. She has a butt on her chest, and who told her that this is attractive??? I don’t think so.

Alas, out. I also am a big busted gal…there’s accentuating, and then there’s just…well, THIS. And it’s so, so very out.

  • elzatelzabelz

OUT- just tacky. The way she’s dressed make her look like a “working girl” also, ugly dress and terrible shoes.

  • Anonymous

Hmm. I really like the look, apart from the shoes and the, y’know, crazy boobage. Speaking as a big busted girl myself, I think “I Don’t Know How She Does It” is an apt statement to have in the background – that looks really painful.

I’m going to give her an IN, just because she actually looks comfortable with the look. Still hate the shoes.

  • Anonymous

    Oh my, OUT indeed.

  • Anonymous

    This DD says “OUT.”

  • Anonymous

That is simply ridiculous…. and it looks painful.

  • http://twitter.com/AleksandrJohn Alexander Cavaluzzo

Vivienne Westwood + Christina Hendricks is always an IN in my book.

  • Patricia Biswanger

    OUT

  • akprincess72

It just looks painful!!!  My D’s would be saying hell no.

  • Anonymous

holy hell, OUT to the nth degree. she makes Jessica Rabbit look realistically proportioned in that thing.

  • Anonymous

Her breasts look like a butt.

    • Anonymous

      A big butt.

      • Nancy Lehet

I had to immediately scroll back up for a good look – you are soooo right!

Out. They’re trying to escape!! Ahhh!

  • Anonymous

    Ridiculous.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t even notice the hem. I was too busy feeling sorry for her boobs. OUT!

  • Anonymous

Ok now I know what this reminds me of and also why I liked this look (which I already voted in):  Hopper’s Nighthawks (red haired woman in a red dress with decolletage).  Maybe many have said this before in their comments but I just wanted to add it in any case

I’ve got similar coloring and build- though I’m nowhere near as tall- the color is stunning on her but how does she not know as a grown woman how to dress the girls? I’ve got large ones and there’s no way I’d walk out of the house in a dress that wouldn’t allow me to take a deep breath for the evening. I’m all for flaunting your assets- if that’s your thing- but there’s a fine line between sexy and vulgar.

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

This is terrible!  I can’t stand the way she dresses and this is like a characature of her typical look.   Act like you’ve owned them for a while… geeze!!

  • Angela Green

Out.  You’re gorgeous, sweetheart, but you’re not at RenFaire.  Get your tits out of your neck.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1017585103 Kanani Fong

OUT.  But maybe her boobs are the thing she wants to be remembered for most!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K4V43KCWS3HBY3C7HH66VJPMMY Natalie

My exact words on seeing this were “It’s Jessica Rabbi–oh, WHAT THE HELL?” – that last part as I scrolled down far enough to see the hemline.

Oh Christina. Such a talented and gorgeous woman, and yet she gets it wrong on the red carpet so, so often. I’m in your corner, baby, but you’re going to have to try a bit harder than that.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OYMPLGS7S7467GQMKEWJDJ3N4A Deb

Yes, yes, honey. We’ve seen them. Now put them away. OUT.

  • Anonymous

I’m all about flaunt’em if you got’em but everything from the waist down is wrong.  sorry, OUT!

  • Alloy Jane

Waste of great boobs.  There is a way to show off that crazy rack without making them look lumpy or trashy, and I’m all about showing ‘em off if you have ‘em.  But lordy, this is baaaaad.  She just needs to give it up and accept the fact that all her clothes need to be tailored specifically for her.

  • Anonymous

The Busty Wench at the Renaissance Fair is ready to serve you some grog…OUT!

  • Anonymous

IN! There are more right things than wrong things here, IMO.

  • Cheryl Kohs

When I can see and count your booby blue veins, you have crossed a line.  A line of taste.  This would be good to wear in a porn movie or at a strip club, however.

The color and draping and makeup are soooo lovely.
but OUT because of the the hem and shoes so horrendous.bust uplift unnerving and distracting but I’d let that pass if the bottom half was perfect.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7AAKMLVVAVCFJVQ7Q6FKE2H2EU Ann

Of COURSE she has real, abundant breasts! She is the Goddess incarnate!! Just. Worship. Them.
(And that is a seriously gorgeous dress even though the hem doesn’t quite carry off the windblown-Venus-on-the-hallfshell drapiness theme.)

  • Anonymous

You don’t notice anything else about the look, because you’re just watching and waiting for her to slip a nip.

  • Anonymous

Out.  She looks awful.  I can’t even be poetic about it.

  • Anonymous

That hem sucks ! And the shoes might have worked in the spring but not as the temps drop.

But IN, because she looks hot as could be and it isn’t really her fault that the hem is ugly.

OUT.  Those have got to be implants.  If you look at that Playboy pic from years ago, those boobs are no where to be seen.  I know she has gained a little weight since that photo, but breasts don’t increase in size that much.  I’m not a hater.  She is a beautiful woman, but you don’t have to look like a cantaloupe display on a red carpet.

  • Anonymous

You know, the dress just does not fit.  I know it was probably free, and I know it’s a big fat designer dress, but when it doesn’t fit well it makes the wearer look a little desperate.

She’s beautiful and adorable and talented so I hate to say it but: OUT. As well said in comments above, this is not what natural big breasts look like. They look like the picture of Sophia Loren linked above. Here the girls are shoved up into some juvenile boy’s comic book vision. Don’t do this, Christina. It’s a disservice to yourself and the rest of us, too.

Can she just hire Janie Bryant as her stylist? Sure she’d look like Joan all the time, probably, but Joan always looks classy, sexy, and appropriate.
