In or Out: Cate Blanchett in Louis Vuitton

Posted on September 20, 2011

Okay, so we sat open-mouthed last night through that Hannah movie, with Cate and Saoirse Ronan. We won’t go so far as to recommend it, unless you’re really in the mood for something weird and unless you want to see Cate plod her way through the worst “suhtherrn ayccint” you’ve ever heard. But two hours of Cate in frumpy hair and sensible heels sent us running to the wires this morning, desperate to see her wearing something fabulous.

This’ll do.

Cate Blanchett in Louis VuittonCate Blanchett attends the Louis Vuitton Island Maison store opening in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore in a Louis Vuitton dress, of course.

Cate Blanchett in Louis Vuitton

Cate Blanchett in Louis Vuitton

It’s a store opening, not a film premiere, so the rules (if there even are any) are somewhat relaxed here. Even so, she looks fantastic in that dress. We wouldn’t have recommended matching peep-toes, but they work, which is about as far as we can go on complimenting them. Really, it’s the hair and makeup that have us puzzled. We’re not loving the mousey-looking cut she’s attempting to work here and her hair looks bleached out to us. The rather heavy eye makeup with the over-bleached hair is making her look a little bit like Dakota Fanning in The Runaways and just so you know, that’s not really a compliment. Oh, Cate. You can’t have lapsed into thinking “I’ve got a kickass dress and that’s all I need to do,” can you? That’s a rookie mistake. Detailing, sweetie. Detailing.

Vote Now!
IN! Oh, shut up, you bitches. I’d KILL to look that bad!

OUT! That hair and makeup requires a glitter t-shirt cut in half and skin tight acid-washed jeans!

Gwynnie Paltrow’s belly buster of a dress was debated ferociously, but the OUTs prevailed.

If she wanted people to notice her lipcolor before anything else, I’d say she succeeded.     A shoe with a pop of color would have been better.  This looks too somber.

  • Anonymous

IN. I think the hair and makeup look girly instead of sophisticated, which is a mistake, but she still looks fantastic.

    • Anonymous

Agreed! But she is IN, bien sur.

  • Anonymous

I LOVE it. (all except those sleeves… which looks like she has a tshirt underneath a halter dress). Her makeup doesn’t ring too heavy to me. In fact, I think it ages her quite well. I would, however, like to brush those bangs away from her eyes.

IN. The dress and lipstick are amazeballs. The shoes, hair and eye makeup are meh, but not nearly bad enough to bring down the look as a whole.

  • Anonymous

IN. I love the bright pink lipstick with the somber dress.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QM76OPRB5LLCTQRS4R6ULXS7BQ Jgar

I’m just going to put myself in a mental place in which Cate woke up this morning and decided, “I’m going to play Barbie Cate Blanchett today,” so she put on that lipstick and that hair color and walked out. She knows what she looks like. Look at that smirk.

Can we vote her bod IN and her head OUT?

Cate is an out for me this time.  Her lipstick, eyes & hair are all too distracting.

  • Leah Cronen

    In!!!

  • MilaXX

IN, not loving the haircut, but that’s a fab dress

  • Anonymous

In.  The hairstyle is fine with me, but the bangs are bad.  She’s too heavy on the eye makeup to also have heavy lips.  I agree a different shoe might have been better, but the ones she’s wearing are fine.  The dress is fab.

    Overall, I like.

  • Judy_J

I had to study this one, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s an IN, with a few caveats.  I’m not crazy about that haircolor…looks a bit too straw colored.  And the heavy eyeliner just makes her eyes look squinchy.  Other than that, she’s perfect.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

IN. bangs are in her eyes and it shows, though.

  • Anonymous

In, but it seems very January Jones (who may have looked a smidge better with that style of hair/make-up.

  • Now I am The Bee

You are correct–she looks like she’s trying too hard to look edgy with the yellow hair and eyeliner, but instead ended up looking like a high-school kid trying to look edgy.   Which is odd, since she looks edgy naturally.
But–she’s a doll, and the dress is darling so I’m giving her an IN.  With reservations.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kasie.hilburn Kasie Hilburn

she looks like an albino grandma mouse. Makes me sad, she’s one of my favorites.

    An IN, surely.

  • Anonymous

She reminds me of Anna Wintour with more makeup.

    • Anonymous

Just what I said before I read  your post. I suppose someone can wear a bob w/o looking like AW but AW kind of owns that bob look. But it’s more than just the hair that’s sending the AW vibe…interesting…

      • Anonymous

I think it’s dress – short sleeves and full skirt seems to be a staple in Anna Wintour’s wardrobe.

        • Anonymous

Janet, I think you’re right on the money. Funny how this dress has a Mad Men/retro feel, but AW’s dresses don’t, I don’t think.

  • Anonymous

In, but not a thrill. That lipstick is too much with the heavy eye. A bare eye with tremendous lashes would’ve been fierce with that lippie. The dress is pretty, if a bit standard. I want more color on her and not just from the lippie. That hair color would only work if the cut were more blunt and choppy; it would give the color a modern edge. The plain bob just makes it look like her stylist got the color wrong.

IN. It’s a nice switch up of a look for her. I don’t think she’ll stay with the fringe for long, but she’s working it. She looks very youthful here.

    • Sobaika Mirza

Glad I’m not the only one! Sure, the shoes could have been better. But overall she looks great. I actually adore the lip color, she has the exact coloring for it.

Not crazy about the fuchsia lipstick, but otherwise she looks fantastic.  Love the Barbie styling. :)  Great legs too – why have I not noticed them before?

I’m not thrilled about anything in this look really, and the eye make-up and lip color are both really off-putting.  I’ll have to say Out, but 1) I’d still kill to look that bad, and 2) I really liked “Hanna” O_o

  • Anonymous

In because of the dress which she is wearing so well and it looks awesome on her. The hair and makeup aren’t enough for me to give her an out.

Definitely IN, despite hair & lip color.

I honestly thought this was Courtney Love. The bleached out hair and bright lips are too much. From the head up, this is not the classy Cate we normally see.

Maybe it’s the expression, but she looks like a wax figure of herself. I’m too distracted by this to comment on the dress.

  • Anonymous

She looks killer in that dress, but I think from the neck up she looks better when she looks more natural.

I’m wondering if her hair is over-processed now for a film role.–GothamTomato

  • Anonymous

I know I’m in the minority here (maybe totally alone) but I don’t like that dress on her. It’s a great dress, but I just don’t think it suits her style. Maybe it’s the shoes.

She’s scaring me. Nobody but Anna Wintour should look like Anna Wintour. And I don’t like the dress. I think it’s way frumpy.

    • Anonymous

Heh. She DOES have a bit of an Anna Wintour look, doesn’t she?

  • Anonymous

IN. I think she looks great – especially her beautiful pale legs against the black dress and black shoes. Just lovely! The pop of color is the lipstick…..

  • Anonymous

IN.  It could have been better with more interesting shoes & clutch.  Hair & make up don’t bother me, though, and she didn’t do anything ‘wrong’.  And the dress is adorable enough to make up for a lot.

  • Anonymous

I’ll give her an IN despite the absence of my love for her lip color and bleached-out hair.

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

well I love a good bob so I am loving this look and to me, it looks like she toned *down* her usual eye makeup. However the sleeves on that dress are bugging me; they’re a bit skimpy and twee. Overall she gets a ton of points for looking that good in 1000% humidity.

  • Anonymous

    Ch-ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb!

In from the neck down, out from the neck up. I don’t think the hair is terrible necessarily, but the hair + makeup just isn’t working for her. Not that she needs something that took 6 hours for something like this, but the lip color is killing me.

    So let’s see… that’s about a 85% in. If we’re rounding up, then she’s IN.

  • Anonymous

I give her an In. I love that dress. It looks demure at first glance, then upon closer inspection, you see all the fabulous detail. I think her hair looks fine. It is a little yellow, but other than that she looks chic. At least it isn’t yoga hair or the long locks over the shoulder BS.

Looking at  the close-up of Cate’s face, I can’t help but think this is the kind of cleaned-up look Courtney love shoots for but misses by a mile.

Total IN!  That is an amazing dress, the details and fabrics are gorgeous.  I think her hair and make up look perfectly fine, not my fave shade of blonde but it suits her skin tone.

  • PostsYouCanDanceTo

A Great Dress is pretty much a guaranteed ‘in’, and this is a great dress.

Hair and makeup are polished, if a little problematic, which is always WAY better than too casual/sloppy.

It’s a great dress, but the shoes, hair, and makeup are not what I expect from this fashion icon. The shoes are too sensible and dull, but perhaps were chosen for comfort more than looks, and maybe it’s the harsh lighting making her hair and makeup look overdone and tired. IN anyway. She may not look perfect but she still looks good.

IN. That dress ought to be a mistake, so many different textures and finishes but it’s not, and in my book THAT’s the kind of result which makes designer clothes worthwhile (for folks with more money than me, that is).  Overall, she looks great.

I think the belt buckle is ugly, and I can’t get over wearing something that is not only ugly but advertises the maker of your clothes – but that bothers some people (me!) and not others, so whatever.  Hair & make-up slide by for a daytime event.

Totally in.  Sometimes you want to wear makeup that looks like makeup, not just making your own face look better.  She can still pull it off, and no time like an all black outfit to rock some stripper-pole-pink lipstick.  The hair only looks brassy in one spot to me, so I’m blaming it on the lighting.  Plus, maybe it’s for a part?  Don’t care.  In.

    In!

  • http://www.facebook.com/sorana.tarmu Sorana Tarmu

I think she looks youthful and fabulous. An easy IN, I say.

IN. But the hair and makeup are harsh, though I love the dress. I imagine she would have looked better with no makeup on at all. The black peeptoes aren’t even bugging me and I’m normally not a fan of the peeptoe.

OUT.  Hate the hair and makeup, and the little cap sleeves are so juvenile looking.  Hate the skirt length.  The whole thing looks both hash and juvenile at the same time, if that makes sense.  And don’t get me started on peep-toe shoes.

In (barely), but I think she should have chosen a much different lipstick color. It’s hard to see anything else about her face with that pink shouting at me.

Out-despite all the details , fabric gee gaws, etc. she still looks like June Cleaver on “Leave it to Beaver”.

  • Anonymous

I don’t mind the hair, but the color seems off. The eye makeup needs to be lighter and most definitely needs another color lipstick. Still she looks amazing, so she gets an in.

IN. I have some issues with it but overall she looks good.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

Oh that is SO out. The dress has way too much crap going on. If this were PR you’d be ripping it to shreds. Polka dot sleeves, weird diamond-shaped appliques on the bodice, a different pattern on the skirt, a heavy leather belt that’s too wide* and waaaaaaaaay too much fabric in the skirt. Just atrocious.

Hair and makeup are even worse, so the whole thing gets a massive OUT from me.

*Edited to add: Oh hell, that’s not even entirely belt. Most of that is leather sewn into the dress itself. And pleated no less. ::shudder:: That’s just. . . I have no words.

Well, I’d certainly kill to look that bad, so it’s an IN for me. I like the haircut, too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

    Hate it. OUT.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

IN.  The hair and makeup aren’t the best, but the dress is awesome, and it is a store opening.

  • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com Kristel

I’m calling IN. (But I have such a crush on her, I might not be the most reliable person to ask.)

  • http://twitter.com/RobertSanchez36 Robert Sanchez

She looks somewhat washed out; is the lighting to blame? But the dress looks great, so I’d give it an “In”.

In.  Oh, to look that good.

I vote IN.  I especially love the belt and waistline detail.

OUT!! That lipstick and hair is an eyesore!! I am bleeding, getting me out of here

In my head I prefer to think she really doesn’t give a fuck what people think of her because she knows she’d look fab in a mu-mu and fuzzy slippers. (Also in my head she and I are BFFs and sip cocktails while we talk on the phone and giggle while we read all the posts here on T-Lo.)

I covet that dress but I would like to take a wet rag and wipe the bonne belle lip gloss and smirk off her face.  For the avoidance of doubt, count me as an OUT.

The hair and makeup were the first thing I saw about this look and I absolutely LOVE IT. She looks GREAT – keeping in mind that this is not one of the more traditional red carpet events – and I cannot believe it but I absolutely love her look. And the dress is good, the shoes are okay, so OF COURSE this is an IN. I don’t see where the room for debate is ;-)

IN. But she should have lightened up the eye-makeup. The bright lip was enough.

Hate the makeup, don’t mind the hair, love the dress. Math is not my strong point but I think that equals an IN.

    THAT LIP IS TOO MUCH.

IN. I like the hair. Not wild about the super bright lips but that’s a minor quibble.

I don’t know how to be more articulate about it, so I’ll just say that she doesn’t look like herself.  Even in less than stellar getups (I recall a pantsuit that got the kittens meowing something fierce), she still looked like CATE wearing unflattering clothes.  These photos make her look like a Stepford Wife, or something…..did the Louis Vuitton people steal her soul?

    Out, for sheer creepiness.

  • http://twitter.com/Ash2046 Ashley Wu

love the dress hate the sleeves!

  • http://twitter.com/somuchhotter Ethan Barclay-Ennew

In, that dress is hard to wear, mostly because it was designed by *gag* Marc Jacobs, she is working it and looks hot and I actually enjoy the fact that should she want to she could look 15 yeas younger at the drop of the hat! Kudos my dear and I look forward to your Helen Miren Years

In. There’s a Pris-in-Blade-Runner vibe here that matches the dress perfectly and boy howdy, do I need that dress. I would have chosen a different shoe, however, although I’m not sure which shoe, precisely.

    • Anonymous

I thought of Pris too!  I, for one, love it.  It’s not conventionally “pretty” hair and makeup, but it’s daring and visually interesting, and it works well with the plastic/leather/pleather/whatever accents on the dress. It’s an IN for me.

  • Anonymous

I don’t feel strongly one way or another about it–I guess I’ll say IN, because I feel like we have such high expectations for Cate and if she wants to be a little more relaxed every once in a while, who am I to deny her? Mostly I’m just commenting to say that I LOVED Hanna.

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I like it when I can see her entire body. When you zoom in the proportions look weird.

  • Caitlin Gozdecki

she looks nice, very sweet and casual. i think a redder lip would have been more mature but its still and IN

  • Anonymous

She looks like she’s from the parts of West Virginia that you can’t get to by car.

    Out.

OUT- If you want to rock Courtney Love hair you need to rock Courtney Love clothes.

In. Maybe redder lipstick, but that’s nit-picking. I think she looks just fine.

Can’t believe this got an out. She looks fabulous, although the makeup’s a bit wonky.

  • Lisa

Makeup and hair need to be toned WAY the hell down. Other than that, love the dress!

My mom wore this EXACT eye make up from about 1984 to 1987.  (With some truly mag Designing Women hair)

    Oh my god. Shut up.

  • Anonymous

I love the dress. Love it. SO much. I like her hair too and her shoes though uninspired are fine. My problem is definitely the make-up: eyes and lips are ba-a-ad.
