Gant by Michael Bastian Spring 2012 Collection
The world of fashion has a fairly well-deserved reputation for taking itself a bit too seriously, so it was something of a respite to leave the tents at Lincoln Center for a bit, head downtown, and have a couple cocktails while wandering around the Gant presentation. The mood, like the clothes, was light and fun. We can think of no better way to illustrate that (aside from the following pictures) than by telling you that the music chosen for this Hawaiian-themed presentation included not only the classic theme to Hawaii 5-0, but also the Brady Bunch singing “Sunshine Day,” and BELIEVE US, after hearing The Rapture’s “How Deep Is Your Love” played at about 30 different runway shows in one week, that light tone was just what we needed. The clothes themselves are a fun blend of ’70s and ’80s styles, with a little bit of hippie, a little bit of surfer, and a shot of preppy running throughout. Just a bunch of fun, accessible, youthful pieces in just about every bright color imaginable on cute (and refreshingly diverse, i.e., not all white) people. Plus, men not afraid to show their thighs. What’s not to love?
