Diane Kruger for InStyle UK

Posted on September 27, 2011

Diane tries on clothes and tells us about her life. T Lo form opinions on both and cast her in an imaginary movie.

On her style: “I don’t have my own stylist. And I like to be a little different – in LA, everyone wears the same dresses. I think my background as a model helps, because I like experimenting and I’m not afraid of fashion or what other people think of me. What you wear is one of the only things about yourself you can manipulate.”

On life with Joshua: “Life is more important than work. We just celebrated our fifth anniversary. We met up in Paris, gave each other gifts and went to dinner – it was just lovely being together. We have the three week rule – we have to see each other, otherwise you drift. But we also enjoy our independence. We have our own lives and have a lot to bring back into the relationship because of that.”

On what she likes about different international film sets: “I love working in America. There’s a certain lightness about it that I like. I actually like to go and work on a film, have a good time and not think too much about it. But I also like the other side, something that is intellectual and intense, as you have in France.”

We never really believe them when stars claim they don’t use stylists. We don’t doubt that she has a sense of style, but employing a stylist makes it so much easier to procure the free dresses and jewelry and have them delivered to you.  On the other hand, we believe her that things are good with her and Joshua because we’ve never seen a picture of them together where he didn’t look totally head over heels in love with her.

We don’t particularly love the staging with these shots – a little too much cutesy – but man, can this girl wear clothes. And not just “clothes,” but a range of styles and looks. We don’t know why she works so infrequently, although an IMDB check reveals she’s got 3 films in the can, but she can grab a camera’s attention like an old-school movie star. We’ve been on this kick lately of casting imaginary biopics (Winslet as Liz Taylor, Dunst as Debbie Harry), so we’re just gonna run with that and say she should be the one to play Marlene Dietrich. She’s got the charisma and the bone structure for it.

she looks like Michelle Pfeifer and Demi Moore’s love child, which means she’s pure fire and sex on heels

    • vix eljay

I keep getting this fabulous Jessica Lange vibe from her.  I always thought Alison Lohman would take up that mantle but she hasn’t got the chops, IMHO.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I think she looks great but there is something strangely missing for me from some of these images. A strong energy and voice.  She’s a lovely woman in lovely clothes, but in some of the shots I’m not really feeling it.  In particular the Louis Vuitton and Chanel shots are oddly sterile feeling to me.

    • Anonymous

I completely agree with you. But I find myself thinking that about Ms. Kruger in general, like there’s a little something missing in the charisma department.

  • Michele Forney

She and Joshua need to go out together soon so we can get a Pairs Division post!  Love her, but love him even more!!

  • Sobaika Mirza

Diane and Joshua are such a great match. I hate them.

Can you feel the bitterness drip from my words yet?

  • http://twitter.com/bredalot Breda Smith

I thought she was so wooden until I saw Inglourious Basterds, and now I’m in love. IN LOVE. She looks fabulous.

  • Geno Boggiatto

She looks great. She always looks great. It looks like a spread that Carrie Bradshaw would look at and think “GOD I want to be as fabulous as this.”

  • Anonymous

I don’t see her as Marlene Dietrich at all.  Not aloof or mysterious enough.  And she’s also missing Dietrich’s androgynous sex appeal.

She’s ordinary Hollywood pretty.  (Which is not a bad thing, just not right for Dietrich.)

Pacey and that Valentino dress. No wonder she’s so pleased with life.

  • Anonymous

    Girl CAN wear clothes!
But there are some dangerous statements there…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RDEDI3ONWSVDQS5GXKKBIML3H4 Chase

I didn’t think much of her until I saw Inglorious Basterds, and now I am a fan.  She’d be a fab Dietrich.  Get this women a top hat and cigarette, stat!

I don’t have any understanding of why you’d choose to photograph that dark velvet Ralph Lauren dress in black and white. Everything that’s special about it has to do with color.

    • Anonymous

I was just going to write word for word the same comment myself..

  • MilaXX

I don’t think she always wears clothes well.  personally I find her a bit to scrawny looking for some of the things she wears on the RC. That said I think with the exception of the b/w Louis Vuitton she looks great in all of these pictures.

    • Anonymous

To be fair, I think anyone would look ridiculous in the Louis Vuitton!

      • MilaXX

Oh I agree, there is no hope for that LV.

        • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

actually Mia Wasikowska wore it for the cover of Australia’s Harper’s Bazaar and she looked phenomenal.

    • http://theredheadd.wordpress.com deb wood

I had the exact opposite thought – it looks to me like something she’d totally wear.

  • Anonymous

Very pretty girl and very pretty clothes but you could park a bus in her mouth in most of these photos. Very distracting.

    • Anonymous

that’s because she’s a model and that seems to be their go-to expression.

  • BerlinerNYC

I am easily fascinated by bright, shiny objects, so I can’t take my eyes off the cover shot. What a smart choice for the cover, since it really grabs your attention. Nice how they used the lighting to maximize the shine.

    • Anonymous

      Heidi? Is that you?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1540233153 Malve Lyborg

        Well that would be BergischGladbachNYC.

  • Adina Holmes

Didn’t Beyonce wear that gold sequined thing on an InStyle cover recently?

    • Anonymous

I was wondering that too? It was only a month or two ago!

  • Isadora Paiva

And… do I need to say it? She’s got the German factor for playing Dietrich.

    • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

I agree — she was so great in Inglorious Basterds, she’d be perfect as Dietrich.

  • Anonymous

Love the Jason Wu and the Valentino

  • victoria rodeno

If you want to fall in love with Diane, see “Joyeux Noel” she is  breathtaking.

  • Anonymous

Gorge.  I’m a little unclear on why her swan-like neck looks foreshortened in some of these shots.  Hard to tell if that’s her as a model or the photo editor.  I also wish we could get away from the trend toward expressionless cover shots.  But she is selling the crap out of that godawful D&G dress,

  • Anonymous

They really didn’t photograph these gorgeous clothes properly.

  • Anonymous

Pretty lady, but every item looks inexpensive on her. There is a lack of enthusiasm and respect shown for these beautifully made gowns makes the photos even more lackluster.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I agree the styling is too cutesy but I do admire her range here.  Except for the Louis Vuitton – what’s up with the goth milkmaid look?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

She looks better in the feathered Chanel than the model does! Man, I love her so much. I don’t get why she’s not in more things either, but I think she is actually very picky about what roles she’s going to take, which I have to respect.

  • narita_rayna

she looks great, but i’d cast her in the Jessica Lange biopic in about 10 years.

  • Lies L.

I KEEP SAYING SHE SHOULD PLAY DIETRICH. Bwahaha, World! I now have TLo on my side, so clearly it will happen! 😉

  • Anonymous

The clothes are good. But Diane Kruger? Well, this is just my opinion, but she is so… hausfrau. I don’t see any glamor to her at all. I still don’t think I could pick her out of a lineup.

  • http://twitter.com/mellafe natalia h

I just find her so boring. She’s never blew me away with her acting and I guess that’s it. She’s just so blah. :/

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

they also put her in absolute knockout garments.
i so dearly love that christopher kane dress. i love the whole collection it comes from.
& the ralph lauren above it, & the vuitton above that…..
startlingly beautiful, good choices all around, very well shot, etc & ect.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks fantastic here, great shoot.  That Jason Mu is to die for, seriously, I want to do drag just to wear it.  In a much, much larger size.  Which would totally ruin the look.  *sigh*

  • Anonymous

I see her more cast as Jerri Hall

  • Anonymous

I love the Christopher Kane dress with the little wiggle thing down the front.  She truly can wear those clothes and look natural doing it.

  • BethAnn Dranguet

She looks better in the clothes than the runway models.

    • http://twitter.com/1carmelita 1carmelita

      My exact thought!

  • Anonymous

Is it OK to say that the Chanel makes both Kruger and the model look amazingly stumpy? Awful, awful…  And agree about that open mouth poses.

    But I love the Wu.

  • Anonymous

Love the Valentino and the Jason Wu.  I’m ambivalent to her…she’s never impressed me much, but I haven’t seen all of her work, either.

Marlene Dietrich?  No way.  Not ever.

  • Anonymous

most of these clothes look better on her than they do on the runway- and that’s saying something about her personal style and ability to WERQ it.

  • http://twitter.com/RzYoung RzYoung

I like her a lot, she was great in Inglorious. I am SO INSANELY JEALOUS THAT SHE’S WITH PACEY god they’re hot!

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

Huh… Kirsten Dunst/Debbie Harry…I never woulda thought so but just googled them and lots of people think so!

  • Anonymous

Love the Lauren gown…someone please make see through long gowns go away?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Not loving any of the shots, but she is, of course gorgeous regardless.

  • Anonymous

She looks beautiful. You can definitely see the model background she’s talking about.

  • Anonymous

She CAN wear clothes – but I hate the Louis Vitton see through number.  I see London, I see France – is that a bathing suit or granny panties under that skirt?  Blech.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077090078 Megan Sullivan

She’s so fabulous. I just love her.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

After that last Rosie Huntington-Whiteley post you did, I can’t imagine anyone else playing Dietrich–although I admit I’ve never heard Rosie speak, and that would probably ruin it for me…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love her and love her films.

  • Anonymous

    I’m seeing Lauren Hutton.

  • Anonymous

Why did they do the Lauren shot in black and white? I’ll bet that color looked great on her.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

That whole thing was just beautiful.  Thank you!

  • Lisa

She is just gorgeous, and you guys are right on the money with your biopics picks!

But – full disclosure, because I think I’m the only woman in the world who feels this way – but I just never found Joshua that attractive.  He’s just got this weird, doughy little elf face – I never thought he was cute.

    • Anonymous

Lisa, I don’t see it either.  No wonder he’s so head over heels–he knows she’s far too beautiful for him.

  • Anonymous

In every single picture, she wears the clothes better than the model.

  • http://www.deathbywhippedcream.com/ Addis R. Pérez

With regards to casting today’s starlets in biopics, T Lo, have you seen these pictures? http://bumbumbum.me/2011/09/20/george-chamoun-iconatomy/

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I am so sick of seeing editorial spreads with models Photoshopped to within an inch of their lives. Stop with the aliens!

  • http://profiles.google.com/frank.ogden Frank Ogden

    gosh she’s so striking!!!
