Cover Girl: Kirsten Dunst for FLARE Magazine

Posted on September 27, 2011

Congratulations, Kirsten Dunst! Forget being an A-Lister; you’re an A-head now!

But if we saw this on a rack and weren’t familiar with the magazine, we’d think “FLORE? What does THAT mean?”

We are so very not crazy about that dress, but we have to admit it works quite well on an editorial level. And sure, she’s photoshopped. Alert the media. But we think she looks great and if there’s ever a Debbie Harry biopic, she’s got the part, as far as we’re concerned.

Hey. Why isn’t there a Debbie Harry biopic?

“Congratulations, Kirsten Dunst! Forget being an A-Lister; you’re an A-head now!”

So who else didn’t see the title on the cover for a sec and thought T-Lo was calling Kirsten Dunst a mean name? Then read their commentary and *still* didn’t get it? Then thought, “T-Lo would never do that!” and went back up and finally saw the “Flare”?

    • Anonymous

I actually thought they referred to her haircut.

      • Jgar

Yeah, I guess I can see that. Yet it is an awesome haircut, no?

        • Anonymous

Awesome for her, yes. It’s a difficult haircut to werq tbh.

          • Sara Munoz

Makes you wonder if they cut her hair that way JUST so she could be an A-head.

    • accidental housewife

I love “asshead” as an insult. I might start using it. And, yeah, it took me a while to figure out what TLo meant.

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Asshat is one of my faves.  :)

    • Anonymous

Thanks. I thought the same thing until I read this. I am apparently an A(ir) Head!

  • Anonymous

That is either a LOT of photoshopping or a lot of makeup.
I usually find her unattractive and cannot recognize her at all.

    • Anonymous

Ditto – doesn’t look at all like her.

  • Sobaika Mirza

Forget the dress. I covet being able to pull off that haircut the way she does.

    • Anonymous

Me too. She has that inverted triangle-shaped face with wide-set eyes, which usually works well with bangs. I like that it’s a little bit Krystle Carrington, but in a good way. She looks great.

      • Cindi Williams

Thank you! That’s the vibe I was getting…Linda Evans. The dress needs some shoulder pads and Yanni attached to it.

        • Anonymous

LOL! Yeah, the shoulder pads need to be MUCH bigger. Back in the day, Linda could just tilt her head onto her shoulder pads and take a nap. Maybe if Kirsten took those ridiculous wings off her hips and attached them to the shoulders, it would be right.

      • Anonymous

I was thinking Michelle Pfieffer in Scarface, but Krystle Carrington works, too.

    • Anonymous

The hairstyle is different for KD, I’ll give her that. But the more that I look at the cover, the more her hair looks like a bad wig. In fact, it’s eclipsed my feelings about what she’s wearing.

  • Jessica Ballinger

I don’t know, guys, I kind of want to wave my fingers in front of her face to get her to snap out of it and open her eyes a bit.

  • Gustavo Casals

“Deborah Harry Bipic” Sounds about right.
Loved the hair and face, the dress is meh

  • Anonymous

Nice hair, but she looks stoned.

  • Anonymous

    She’s Got Betty Davis Eyes!

  • Manon

    Really clean look, nice….

  • Erin Nice

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look this good. I love her hair like that.

  • Anonymous

“A head” LOL! or “pothead”, girl has some serious stoner eyes going on in that photo…..

    • Anonymous

But that’s how her eyes are. Sort of heavy-lidded. They used to be called “bedroom eyes” and they were considered extremely sexy.

  • Anonymous

Cute hair, still hating the dress. Looks like two tongues lolling over her hips.

  • Kelli Anderson Taylor

I totally thought that was Michelle Pfeiffer at first glance.

    • Anonymous

Yup, I can see a little bit of Michelle too.

  • Angela

I don’t like pink and red together, it makes me think of valentines, and it has some weird shoulder pad action going on, but YES! Debbie Harry biopic, and quick, before she gets any older…

  • Anonymous

Agreed on the Debbie Harry thing. On the biopic and on Kiki getting the part. Kind of uncanny how she looks like Debbie circa 1982 with that hair.
The dress is fugly, but she looks really pretty on that cover.

  • Anonymous

Debbie Harry is precisely when my beady little brain went.

We’ve seen this dress before, haven’t we? Didn’t like it then; don’t like it any better now.

  • Anonymous

A magazine cover is the only place I ever want to see this dress.

Never again on poor Emma Stone or any other starlet/celebrity.

  • Marie Drucker

Deborah Harry is 66! So hard to believe.

    • accidental housewife

      My god, she’s amazing.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Wow…Kiki looks great all cleaned up and photo shopped.  Accentuating even tiny hips is a crime against all women.

    • Anonymous

Accentuating even tiny hips is a crime against all women

NO NO NO – you sound like michael Kors.  Women who are top heavy can use the balance it helps make the waist look smaller!

      • Anonymous

Plus, Marie Antoinette (and Kirsten as Marie Antoinette) looked damn fine with accentuated hips.

  • Anonymous

I like her but there’s something strange about the picture; it reminds me of one of those board books that has 3 panels and you flip them to make different assemblages. Like this:

  • Anonymous

Wait, wait, haven’t we seen this before? Or at least something like it? It might have been in an IN or OUT post… I just remember someone wearing a skirt very similar to this and everyone going ‘WUZZAT ON HER HIPS OH NOES’.

  • Catherine Rhodes

Note to magazine editors: As an avid reader of fashion magazines I am sick to death of the uber-Photoshopping that takes place with cover models. Enough already! They look like aliens. You’re paying a boatload for these celebrity shoots and have rendered the starlet unrecognizable. Please stop!

  • MilaXX

She looks good. That dress is hideous, but I guess if it is to be used anywhere then it’s better in an editorial shot then on the RC.

  • tom

Dress is awful; even Barbie wouldn’t wear it.  Can see her playing Deborah Harry.

  • Anonymous

i like her & the cover.  debrorah harry….brilliant!

  • Anonymous

I wonder why it’s Flare instead of Flair.  The latter seems far more appropriate and Kirsten could retain her status as an A-Head.

  • Sara__B

She looks better than the model. I’ll give her that.

  • Barbara Woodruff

There’s something very odd about her pose in this picture. Like her hips and legs are facing one way and her body is facing the other. And then there’s her right arm which seems to be stuck onto her body like a doll’s arm. It looks like they manipulated her body with Photoshop to get her to fit the position they wanted her in with regards to the text. It makes her look like an alien.

I like the colors of the dress, though, if not the silhouette.

  • Anonymous

Alert Michael Kors! There’s a dress that makes a woman’s hips look bigger!

  • Anonymous

Wasn’t Emma Stone wearing this on the Red Carpet recently? I think she was OUT’d….
I also thought the name could be “Flore” hahaha….

  • Anonymous

I love the way her face looks here.  I think she looks more intriguing than the model.  I usually hate red and pink together but here, I find it gorgeous.

  • Susan Collier

That skirt has a Kimberly hiking-bunching element to it. Are those flaps like individual hand muffs?

  • Anonymous

Several have tried but the chosen are few, who have tried to pull this dress off. She is not sophisticated enough to pull it off for full length view, but photoshopped and color enhanced she looks pretty good.

  • Mary McClelland

KIKI! You look stunning! I love the hair. Yay!

  • Alyson Lamble

I think she actually looks like Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface.  Not a compliment.  And that dress looks no better on her than it did on Emma Stone.

  • Sara Munoz

Yes! I totally saw Debbie Harry in that thumbnail.

  • Anonymous

My initial reaction was “she looks like a mixture of Blondie and Michelle Pfeiffer.”  Really hard to recognize her.

  • Shopgrrl81

I think this is a great example that some dresses work better in editorials especially on girls with the right hair color. Hated this dress on Emma Stone, sorta like it on Kirsten.

  • Anonymous

    A-head!  lol!

She does look good, the dress still doesn’t.

  • Amanda Gun

I like the dress way more on this cover than I did when Emma Stone wore it on the red carpet for something-or-other. Probably because of the aforementioned photoshop!

    • Anonymous

I agree.  Much better in one posed, well-lit, photo-shopped shot than in real life.

  • Phillip Wilde

    She looks kind of dead-eyed.

  • Basil Von Broccoli

My issue with the Photoshop work done here is that they’ve removed all the texture from the top half of the dress, so much  so that it looks like her torso is made of red plastic. Otherwise she looks good.

  • Anonymous

I’ve never liked that dress. Why do people keep wearing it?

  • ecallaw

Wow, I didn’t even recognize her.  I think it’s the best she’s ever looked, and you nailed it on the Debbie Harry comparison.

  • Anonymous

That dress is phenomenally stupid.  But, I have to agree Kiki would make a pretty good Deborah Harry.  Although, I’d want to make sure Deborah Harry approves the choice.

  • ecallaw

Thinking about it more, I know why she’s so unrecognizable here.  She has such a distinctive smile and teeth, and you just can’t tell that at all with the particular expression she has in this picture.

  • Anonymous

I think we should totally forget about Kristen and start talking about Debbie Harry.

  • Alexander Peterhans

    She looks sleepy. Or “sleepy”.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Photoshopped to within an inch of her life!  Hate the outfit, but at least they lined the top.  Not crazy about the white blond hair.  Not a big fan of her’s, can you tell?

  • Anonymous

So bangs are back?  On Kirsten, I think thye look great.  I am a fan of hers so I will not be objective, she looks great and is working an ugly dress really well.  Although, she has never looked as lovely as she did in Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antionette”.  Gorgeous film, it’s like fashion porn.

  • Anonymous

can this please be the last time we ever ever ever ever ever see that stooooooooooooooooooooooooopid dress?  and those eyes take me back to interview with a vampire and not in a good way.

  • Melissa Della

“we’d think “FLORE? What does THAT mean?”
That is exactly what I thought, actually. It took me a few seconds there.
As for Kiki, she is rocking the shit out of that hair and silly little frock, even if they have alienified her a bit.

  • Anonymous

She looks a bit like a young Michelle Pfeiffer!  Very pretty, though I’m over that really-washed-out blonde on her.

We’ve seen this dress before, right?  It looks better on her than the model (fabric is less nip-tastic), but those shoulder pads are still distracting.  I don’t mind them (I’m a Joan girl from way back) in general, but they look odd under a thinner, stretchy fabric like this.

  • Anonymous

I was thinking Michelle Pfeiffer when I saw her, circa 1980s, but I actually think she looks cute. I like the bangs on her. The dress looks great on her, on paper. but if I ever saw a real person wearing it, I would probably hate it.

  • Anonymous

The dress is stupid both on the model and her. There’s something totally bizarre happening at the shoulders. I think it’s padding making a very strange shape, rather than shitty photoshopping. Whichever, it’s ugly.

    She looks pretty good, though.

  • Anonymous

Great. Now I’m going to spend my entire evening obsessing over whether KiKi looks more like Debbie Harry or Linda Evans. The eyes are Ms. Harry’s, but the hair is a follicle-for-follicle replica of Krystle Carrington’s do. Either way, she looks great!

  • narita_rayna

oh sweet jesus i need a deborah harry biopic! like right now! :O

  • Anonymous

Yes, TLo, why isn’t there a biopic? Debbie Harry is my current girl crush. I spent hours looking at pictures of her on the internet the other night. That woman is fierce.

  • { edi } ilovetrash

i love this dress, i apologize.
looks way better on her than on the model.
    yes, she looks spacy.
she looks kind of like debbie harry, but much less singular.

i think the reason there hasnt yet been a debbie harry biopic is that debbie harry is still, praisefully, very much alive. &, while her life was ridiculously interesting, it meandered after the late 70s/early 80s in a more normalish way than would be exciting for a biopic. she did some coke, some acting, some recording, some general doing of things like everybody else, she & blondie had a comeback but it wasnt really a definitive one, just more like one meandered around, she’s still here. i found it very sad when she & chris stein broke up. the old old scene is so tiny that its people are mostly no more removed than by two degrees of separation. &, of course, there were so many deaths. it felt like a third cousin ended a thirty year marriage.

  • Kyle Crawford

isnt this the third time we have seen this exact dress ??

  • Anonymous

is it just me or do her breasts look fantastic in that shot?

  • Mori Clark

what is wrong with her eyes
she looks like she’s having a stroke

  • Claudia Fernandes

    she’s deborah harris daughter!!

  • Anonymous

It took us along time to find out what TLo meant because the magazine is from Canada. I didn’t even know Canada had their own magazines. Isn’t that cute?
She looks like a younger Michelle Pfeiffer. Which is to say, lovely.
Debbie Harry Biopic, Debbie Harry Biopic (chant with me people), Debbie Harry Biopic!

  • Marissa

Haven’t we seen this dress enough? I’ve seen in on a bunch of celebs in the past few months. You’d think they’d be able to pick something fresher for this? Even if it was shot a while ago, it’s still off-putting.  Honest question- is this a legit complaint or am I being too picky??

  • Emily

She looks fab.  Also, hells yeah on the debbie harry biopic.  That would be wicked awesome.

  • Lisa

I vote YES on a Debbie Harry biopic!  And now that you mention it, styled the way she is here, she really would be perfect.

  • Anonymous

Why does this dress keep showing up?  Fugly.
