Cover Girl: Adele for Vogue UK

Posted on September 06, 2011

We’re in a cranky, cynical mood today. Because Vogue UK slapped this gorgeous picture of Adele on their cover…

Adele for UK VogueAdele for the September issue of Vogue UK, photographed by Sølve Sundsbø

… and our first thought was “Zoom in tight, Vogue! Tight as you can! Don’t you dare show an inch of her non-model-sized body! And for GOD’S SAKE, cover her chin and jawline with her hair!!!”

Yes, we’re bitches, but can you say we’re out of line for thinking that they deliberately (and clumsily) camouflaged her big-girlness? Still, at least it’s a gorgeous picture of her.

Inside, Adele is once again refreshingly not up her own ass:

On her pre-show ritual: “I puke quite a lot before going on stage. Though never actually on stage. But then, I s— myself before everything … the bigger the freak-out, the more I enjoy the show!”

On the entertainment industry’s obsession with weight: “I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down. And I don’t want that in my life. I have insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me.”

On being single: “I do get massively distracted when I’ve got someone in my life, which I can’t afford to do right now. Besides, no one treats me as well as I do.”

How can you not love a gal who gets the cover of Vogue and then goes on about shitting and puking all over herself?

I adore her <3 I love how confident she is and she's absolutely hilarious

It is a gorgeous photograph, but I agree with you on the reason they zoomed in so tight.

Love her! It’s so silly how they did the tight zoom in. Oh well, she easily proves she’s above that silly shit.

I worked for a fashion magazine 40 years ago and can’t imagine either the cover photo, or the hilarious lines about puking and shitting making it in back then.

Progress indeed, you gorgeous Adele, you.

When I saw your Twitter comment that’s exactly why I assumed they did that.  Predictable women’s magazines.  They are such hypocritical see you next Tuesdays.  One face says, “you can be beautiful at any size, it’s all about confidence!” and the other face goes “shit, a fat girl got too famous to ignore, we’re going to have to put her on a cover, fuuuuuuuuuck!”

She is equally funny live in concert. Love, love, love her and wish they would stop obsessing over her weight — who cares??? More importantly, THE GIRL CAN SING!!! And she can sing well LIVE!

That’s part of the reason she’s so awesome—because I honestly think she doesn’t obsess about her weight, she’s just having an awesome time.

Adele is gorgeous, and here she is neck-less. This is just not a fashion photo at all. The alternative, I suppose, would have been digitally editing her until she is unrecognizable. I’m sure they’d never just consider a NORMAL PHOTO of her.

However, she has her mouth closed! Haven’t we all been complaining about how sick we are of seeing open-mouthed photos? So this is a small victory? Perhaps?

      • http://www.facebook.com/cruz.alejandra Alejandra Cruz

this photo is unbearably obnoxious.  really?  a “myspace photo” for the cover of vogue.  this reminds me of that ugly betty episode with the “scandalous” unretouched photos of natalie whitman.

God, Vogue just exhausts me.  But I do love, “I have insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me.”  What a brilliant idea!

T and Lo, I will forever be in love with your respect of all body types.  The fashion world doesn’t show that much, and I love you because you do.

    • Anonymous

She looks gorgeous, and big girl gets the cover, so I’m not going to bitch about how they didn’t show any more of her. Let’s at least give them credit for trying before they reject the notion as “no one is satisfied when we make the effort, so why bother?”

      • Anonymous

The problem is that they aren’t really trying with this photo, though, are they? If you didn’t already know that Adele is a “big girl”,  there is nothing in this photograph that would clue you in (other than the obvious masking that T&Lo have already pointed out). So no, I am not going to give them any credit here. They don’t deserve it.

        • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

          Agreed.  No credit!

        It’s Adele’s victory, not Vogue’s, and I won’t diminish it.

    • Anonymous

Sadly I don’t have the right receptors to really really like her music even though I know she’s high quality and would like to love it.But I adore her personality none the less.” I have insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me” <- this!  (though, sadly oh so often it's parents & siblings who do the "pointing out" -not so easy to get rid of them)That cover, well she has an exceptionally pretty face, so I don't mind. Had a glass of vodka lemon which softened the cynicism, I guess. On the other hand I'd really like to know, if a magazine sells less if it features a plus size woman on the cover – or if it only touches the worst fears of the perpetually dieting female and gay staff of said magazines. Oops – cynicism's back – where's the next drink?.

    • Vaniljekjeks

      She is gorgeous!!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6LN3YDEEKSR6XINKBYKN72NB74 Elaine

dudes, that was my first exact thought too. Totally gross. But it’s fashion, guys. BIG SURPREEZE. girl’s got chops, style, personality and she’s not a size 2 and doesn’t WANT to be a size 2? for SHAME! someone happy with themselves in a quiet, classy way? BEHOLD! She’s fucking gorgeous. I only wish she would have used her fame to force them to show her whole freaking face at least. It’s so insulting to her and the readers. BLECH. pittooey.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Jean-St-Martin/504251897 Lauren Jean St. Martin

I would like for once to see someone just ask about Adele, not her take on weight, or the industries view on it. She’s a person, not a scale or advocate. Gosh.

    • Anonymous

She sounds solid.  And there is no question you’re correct about the photo.

An acquaintance who’s a long time voice coach says she needs more training (or needs to pay attention to the training she’s had) or her voice won’t hold up to touring.  Hope he’s being too gloomy.

      • Anonymous

She has already come across this issue, last year (? I think?) she had to cancel some dates because of vocal issues, and as a result I believe she is getting more vocal training.

    • Christine Marie

Umm. . . I don’t think you’re being bitchy at all, actually. It’s true. That’s absolutely what they’re doing and it is absolutely ridiculous

    • Anonymous

She doesn’t need Vogue to prove she’s gorgeous. She just is.

    • Anonymous

Elle: we already know Adele is a big girl. Showing a bit of her neck on the cover wouldn’t have shocked us.

    • Anonymous

Much as I agree in principle, as a former biggish girl, if I ever landed the cover of Vogue, I really  wouldn’t enjoy seeing all my many and various chins displayed to millions just to make a point.  Heck I even edit the ‘chinny’ photos out of Facebook. Adele has as much right as skinny girls to have the most flattering photo possible as her Vogue cover.

      • Anonymous

That’s very true. There’s a tendency to want any famous woman who isn’t skinny to be a flag-bearer for everyone else, when she, like all the rest of us, would just want the prettiest picture.
So although I do agree it’s typical, annoying, Vogue. It’s also a lovely pic. And if I was Adele, I’d want to pass the newsagents with a proud, ‘hey look, that’s me! and I look fabulous’, rather than, ‘oh no look at my effing fat chin on that cover, roll on next month’.

    • Anonymous

Everything you say is absolutely true. But. If you didn’t know who Adele is or what her body looks like, and you saw this cover, you’d think you were simply looking at an astonishingly beautiful, very sensuous woman’s face. She’s so lovely that a tight CU like that seems appropriate. I’m not defending Vogue, as I’m sure all the criticism is completely warranted. But man it’s an arresting and eyecatching cover, so much more intimate than their usual celeb cover shots.

    • Lies L.

She’s so pretty and fun. Love her.

    • Anonymous

Adele is awesome!  You were not bitchy at all.  You spoke the truth, just like Adele does.  Beautiful cover; better this than a picture of Adele airbrushed to within an inch of her life.

    • Lisa

You guys were truthful, and definitely not bitchy.  We big girls know the deal.  And she’s really awesome!

    • Anonymous

Okay, I’ll admit my ignorance in not being familiar with Adele before now (which has rapidly been rectified — thanks, iTunes!), but the way you all were talking had me thinking she was Mama Cass-sized or something.  But seeing her in video, she’s not even that big a girl!  Certainly not even big enough to be in plus sizes, just towards the upper end of the standard women’s size range.  Why on earth would those idiots at Vogue think she needed to be disguised in *any* way?  God, I hate the fashion industry sometimes.

    • MilaXX

I love her. Not even slightly surprised that Vogue gave her the big girl treatment. Still she  gorgeous! I could look at that pretty face any day. She seems like a great pal to hang out and have a beer with.

As my mother would say, “It’s how big you are inside that counts”.  Vogue – pretty small and squinchy inside.  Adele, on the other hand sounds like a self accepting renaissance goddess – a Botticelli portrait for modern times.

She also looks gorgeous on the outside, so double snaps to her with a sidelong, eyebrows-raised glance at Vogue.Brava, Adele

Lord, but she’s beautiful.  If we were back in the Gibson Girl days she’d be considered one helluva knockout – perfect, in fact.
I rather think she is now.  Pity beauty is no accepted as being solely in the
eye of the beholder.  I see equal beauty in both her and someone like
Audrey Hepburn.  Different types entirely….but each possessed of a
deep, soulful beauty that reaches much more than skin deep.  I much
prefer the ‘Out Magazine’ photos to these in Vogue UK.  In ‘Out’ they seem to capture something special – more ‘her’ in a way.  And they show all of her – not just her face, lovely as it is.

Yes, Vogue is incredibly focused on a ridiculously unhealthy body image.  Consumers of such products need to be made aware of such when consuming their material.  And it is good of you to say something about it.  BUT Why do you neglect to comment on the same use of disguise in the majority of the pictures that OUT magazine used in their spread with Adele?
Kinda doubt any argument about one magazine’s readership having an audience with a better body image would get very far.
Thanks for sharing the pretty though.  No matter how they crop a photo of Adele, those eyes are always going to steal my soul before I even see the rest of the picture.
And I’m now going to go meta-hypocritical by asking that you feature some man-pretty sometime soon.  Haven’t seen a Man on the Street post in a while…

Being off the grid, apparently, I’ve never heard of Adele, so I listened to some of her songs on YouTube. She’s talented! Reminds me some of Bonnie Raitt. Anyway thanks for the heads up. She’s new to me so I like her photo even though I get the point about the skinny bitches getting full body photos. I don’t really care.

    • Anonymous

“I puke quite a lot before going on stage.”Well, as a singer, that explains a lot about her sound. All that puking isn’t going to do her any good in the long or even medium term. I love Adele, but she sounds like she has nodules brewing, and this isn’t helping. Re the picture. She is beyond gorgeous. Why can’t Vogue leave well enough alone?

    • Anonymous

She is so talented. I may buy Vogue for the first time ever.  And yes, I agree with you about the cropping.

    • Anonymous

I assume there are more pictures of her inside the magazine, and that some of them show her entire fabulous body, so I am not at all offended by this cover.  I think she is confident, talented, original and beautiful.  She is a star.

    • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

Her laugh is INSANE. Love her interviews, she’s really candid about a lot of things

    • Anonymous

That was precisely my first thought upon seeing it — heaven forbid Vogue be tarnished with an imperfect body!  But then my second thought was even more cynical — that if they had shown more of her, they would have had to slap a comment on the cover about how she’s so fabulous DESPITE not being skinny, like it’s a surprise and a triumph over a terrible condition.  Those once-in-a-blue-moon condescensions to tell women who can’t wear size-2 designer fashion that might still be worth living really annoy me.  Although maybe that’s what the “The English Woman Now” bit is about…

    • Anonymous

      Luv huh.

She is SO gorgeous. Great photo shot but I agree with everything you said. What really incenses me is in her video for “Rolling In the Deep” that the director has her just SIT there. She’s not allowed to move her body. Because we can’t have a music video where a woman with big hips, boobs and tummy moves her body and expresses her sexuality. She’s allowed to sing about it while some skinny dancer moves FOR her. Sick.

here are pics of her whole self, over time.  note in picture number 6 it says she was “styled by Anna Wintour.”   Boy would I have liked to be a fly on the wall in that styling session.  Adele is the antithesis of Anna in all ways (warmth, for example, being accessible but still glamorous for another.)

My copy of this arrived yesterday, and that was exactly my first thought. If you haven’t seen the rest of the pictures, there is ONE which shows her body and the rest are more close-up face shots. She looks great, but also, exactly like every other Adele shoot I’ve ever seen.

“Besides, no one treats me as well as I do.”  So fucking awesome.  Love her.  Vogue is so awful when it comes to normal sized, beautiful women.  Their size issue is such a joke.  It’s really disgusting.  It can’t really be that hard to photograph such a beautiful woman in a flattering way.

    • Anonymous

Fashion magazines will always be fashion magazines. You could have a dozen or so famous models die from the effects of anorexia in a single year and Vogue et al. would not change.

People like Adele will never change. They will go on being honest and real, and thank heaven for them.

The only thing I don’t get is why Vogue is interested in Adele. Maybe she and Anna bonded when Anna styled her for that awards show. Or maybe Vogue wanted to coast on the coattails of the current hot singer. They should have given her more than a head shot, and they are certainly not “Adoring Adele,” but she looks great in this shot, and if it means that more people discover her immense talent, well, fine.

Love her voice and love her down to earth personality.  It is beyond refreshing to see someone who is confident but not arrogant and obnoxious about it.  She’s the best and deserves all she now has. Plus, what a gorgeous girl she is.

Your first thought was the first thought most of the internet had, I think.

i thought the same about the cover. but it’s good she’s getting the real promotion she deserves. it’s too bad though she has to answer the weight questions every interview. at least she has a good sense of humor, but i wonder how much it hurts.

When I saw the cover, I thought they were doing a great retro-eighties style cover. It’s not til recently that Vogue started always running the Cosmo-style full body photos on their cover- the cover always used to be cool, close up shots of models faces with lots of expression.
Adele’s cover reminded me more than anything of Brooke Shields’ Vogue covers in the eighties. I just did a google image search, and yep, they look very similar. Brooke’s chin is even covered in one.

We call shots like that the “angles”. I expect better from Vogue. She does have beautiful eyes though and you can see them really well in this picture.

They probably would have put a wig on her if she didn’t have such luscious locks to disguise her non-model-sized self. Still, you do have to love how nervy she is for even showing up at Vogue and talking about her weight. You show those skinny bitches how it’s done, Adele.

      wow, classy bitch

Love Adele–she has spunk. They should have used a regular photo of her. For shame, Vogue.

As a bigger girl I have to say…. This photo is GORGEOUS. She hasn’t been photoshopped to look stick thin, but the photo is just lovely. Do I wish there were diffferent standards? Sure. Do *I* want to be the one to challenge those by having a photo of me on the cover of Vogue where I’m going to cringe everytime I walk past a newsstand and think “ugh! They couldn’t have found one where I didn’t look fat?”

Her weight doesn’t matter, but she looks absolutely lovely in this picture. Not everything has to be about challenging standards… sometimes it can just be about putting a great image on the cover.

Further, why is that if you’re bigger it’s viewed as disappointing if you’re not actively challenging the status quo?

I completely agree with everything you just said.

Vogue has had many, many cover shots over the years featuring very close, tight face shots of models, actresses, ect.  Some even have their hair draping around the neck, imagine the horror.  I highly doubt there was any motif here beyond “Wow!  THAT”S the cover shot!”  Not everything is about weight…..
I ADORE her in any setting, any time, any photo.

Well, bless UK Vogue for putting her on the cover, anyway. Wintour would have been hiding Adele’s body on page 358.

But if they don’t think Adele is gorgeous enough to show from head to toe, or can’t think of clothes that will achieve that, I won’t be taking looks/fashion advice from them.

      She is so very beautiful.

Interesting piece by Melanie Rickey, Grazia editor, on this: http://fashioneditoratlarge.blogspot.com/2011/09/adele-should-not-be-too-big-for-vogue.html
They did miss a trick. A good chance to show what they can do with a bigger girl, but then they aren’t interested in that. Time they put their money where their mouth is and actually did something positive instead of the occasional bit of lip-service. Maybe employ stylists that don’t throw their hands up in horror at anyone who’s bones aren’t visible.
An aside on Vogue – I know you’re up to your eyes, but I’d be interested in your take on the Vogue Italia corset shoot with Stella Tennant. I suspect it would be divisive, I’m even unsure if I like it, and I (clue’s in the name) make corsets.

She looks very retro and beautiful.  For some reason, she looks very mature for her age.  I was shocked to learn she is only 23.  She looked twice that at the VMAs and no it’s not her size.  Big girls usually look younger if anything.

Love her!  So funny and confident for someone so young.  What a great talent.
