Charlize Theron in Chloé

Posted on September 23, 2011

We have a slew of red carpet looks for today so we’re not even bothering with “In or Out” on this one. We just want to use it as a launching pad to discuss something else. Aren’t we clever little girls?

Charlize Theron in ChloéCharlize Theron attend the HTC Serves Up NYC Product Launch in NYC in a Chloé dress.

Charlize Theron in ChloéLove the sandals; that’s a great color; the dress looks way too big on her; hair’s too limp. Done.

So, did you guys see that Dior commercial she did? The one that aired during the Emmys with Beth Ditto singing?

Because it is FREAKING US OUT. Uncanny Valley Marilyn and Uncanny Valley Marlene haunt our dreams!

She looks great to me.  Simple lines, nicely accessorized, great sandals.  And a gorgeous color for her.

    • Anonymous

omg, i did not see that commercial!  wow that was pretty fabulous.

    • Sara__B

J’adore that commercial. Well done, Dior!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

Attention Hollywood starlets: It is not a crime to wear a bra.

In fact, it will benefit you in the short (the twins look better in your dress) and long (avoid boob surgery) term.

Please holster your girls. It’s the right thing to do.

      /public service announcement

      • Judy_J

Charlize’s girls do appear to be headed off in opposite directions.

      • Anonymous

AGREED!  She really is too sophisticated a woman for this trashy trick.

      • Sobaika Mirza

As someone who is rather… well endowed, I’m inclined to agree. I hate seeing starlets running around looking trashy. But she doesn’t have a whole lot going on up there, I think she can get away with it. For now.

And she’s long past the “starlet” stage of her career anyway. WEAR A BRA.

    • Anonymous

Don’t forget Uncanny Valley Grace Kelly?  Charlize looks so amazing in that dress in the commercial.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

      And that commercial!!!!!!
OMG the money they through at that!
      Awesome.

    • Anonymous

This is a great look for her for a lunch or a day about town.  Not sure about red carpet.  It looks a little shlumpy for an evening event.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=527150091 Pat Biswanger

Pretty uncanny Grace Kelly there too, in the beginning.  Very cool commercial.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

What is up with women who have small boobs not wearing a bra?! I don’t care if you are flat – wear a freaking bra.

Beautiful color on her, but holy mother the dress is swallowing her.

The commercial freaked me out too. :)

    • Vaniljekjeks

Looks like a fancy surgeon’s tunic.

      • Anonymous

What is with these recent red carpet looks in surgical-scrub green?  It makes me worry that she might have syringes in her clutch.  Not good!

    • Anonymous

Ive always thought her to be stunning. She does need something taken in on this green number as its making her look a bit drab. But the commercial is definitely a bit of pretty on an gray rainy day here in nyc…

      • Anonymous

Actually on 2nd thought that commercial is a *lot* of pretty!!

    • Judy_J

I guess you could say the Dior commercial is like an alternate universe, where the past and present have collided in one big fashion orgasm.

Could it be possible that they shot a commercial in the famed Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, home of Marie Antoinette and Louis IV? An aside, this century the Hall of Mirrors is known as the place where the Treaty of Versailles was signed, ending WWI.

      • Anonymous

That shirt that Olivier made on PR last night would fit in well with the Versailles theme!!!  See, he’s fashion-forward!!

        • Anonymous

Fit in well as a footstool.  Or wallpaper.

      • Anonymous

I think that is the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles! Hubby and I were there on vacation this summer. How amazing.

      • Anonymous

I doubt it.  Sofia Coppola was the first filmmaker allowed to ever film in Versailles for her film “Marie Antoinette” and she was required to pay for EVERYTHING to be removed and replaced with reproductions.  Then everything was put back as before, the production costs were staggering.  Also, the Hall of Mirrors is immense, much larger than what appears in the commercial.  And now i sound like a nerdy know it all!  Sorry!  LOL!

        • Anonymous

Definitely Versailles (per several internet sources). It is immense and breathtaking in person, Tom. But I thought that was conveyed pretty well in the commercial. Dior is french so I guess they get special treatment. ;-)

          • Anonymous

Thanks for that update. Lucky Dior…. it just fet so much larger in person but the camera work is great.

      • Sobaika Mirza

Yes, I’ve read that they filmed in the Hall of Mirrors. Good eye!

      • Sobaika Mirza

I too love the sandals. Look great on her fab legs but everything else about her looks limp and wan.

    • MilaXX

That green dress looks two sizes to bug on her and the background of the video is far more interesting than Charlize.

    • Anonymous

I think that is a great look for her, the dress is an oversized design.  It looks pretty much the same on the model but the model is walking that brisk model stomp so the tp op looks flatter against her torso.  I love the sandals as well.  My only issue here is I would prefer she wear some sort of brassiere, it’s a little to porn star for someone as classy as Charlize.

    • Anonymous

I wish she’d go back to short hair.  Shows off her beautiful face better.  This is kind of running-errands hair…so flat.

The dress does look way too big, and it looks like her boobs aren’t speaking to each other.  Sandals are cute, but I like the really bold ones on the model better.

      • Anonymous

I agree with everything you said

    • Anonymous

I hate to say it, but for once the model looks better and healthier.

    • Anonymous

      Love that song.

And you didn’t ask, but she’s OUT. On the RC, not in the commercial where she looks fabulous beginning to end.

    • Anonymous

Gaaah, the commercial!   Was it entertaining to anyone else that the image they used of Marilyn holding the bottle is remarkably similar to Marilyn’s ad for Chanel perfume?  Oh, well.  Guess Chanel had her alive and now it’s Dior’s turn.
Btw, the dress is a beautiful color but it makes her look short, which at her height simply shouldn’t happen.

      • Sobaika Mirza

I noticed that too! Odd, she was so associated with Chanel’s fragrances. You’d think they’d look to a different Old Hollywood siren.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

she seems to be missing a bra.  her boobies look sad.

    • Anonymous

I have SUCH a girl crush on her. I would totally switch teams for this one.
How gorgeous is she in that commercial?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

Grace, Marilyn, and Marlene are freaking you out for a reason. DEAR LORD

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_C65IT4K6RYN4TWRMFJOI3VUDAI Olechka Milashka

Her boobs look sad.  Should have worn a bra.

    • Anonymous

Bedroom eyes.  Uncannily perfect eyelids on both the Marlene and Marilyn impersonators.

      • Anonymous

I just don’t believe that these were impersonators. I think it’s clever CGI that used images from movies and commercials. And I think I saw Jerry Hall in the commercial, too.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NLFJ3IXKJ3Z52CDSMWBA32SIGQ meka

i was just thinking the same thing.  that looked too much like the originals to be impersonators.

    • Anonymous

She is so stunning and a really great actress. Perhaps she would have been a great person for the Marilyn bio pic.

    • Anonymous

The dress is not flattering on her, she looks a bit washed out. I like the look a lot better on the model. As for the commercial, it’s very reminiscent of “Hello Tiger, this is your father commercial… YIkes!

    • Anonymous

The commercial is great.  But, while I think Charlize is fab, it’s pretty dangerous to allow youself to be compared to some of the greatest screen beauties of all time.  Is there any working actress who isn’t going to lose by comparison in that company?

    • Anonymous

The proportions of the dress are terrible and the shoes look all kinds of strange.

    • Anonymous

Why do any of you think they are impersonators? I immediately assumed the filmmakers have digitally altered old footage so these dead divas can be resurrected as Dior spokesmodels. They did a nice job of blending new and old – before Grace Kelly turns around, there is a stand-in/impostor; after Marlene is shown, the kneeling photographer is taking pictures of an anonymous model’s stocking-ed legs; the hands grabbing the Dior perfume are not really Marilyn’s — but this trend is about 20 years old. Here’s a roundup of offenses: http://social.entertainment.msn.com/tv/blogs/tv-buzz-blogpost.aspx?post=1346812 (while looking up the above, realized… )OH! “Uncanny Valley” is a thing!! And all that said, I don’t even mind the resurrections as much as I normally do, because that is a CRAZY FABULOUS FANTASY.

Memo to Charlize: Please put on a bra.

    • Wrenaria

The commercial was fabulous. Good job, Dior.

Not keen on the gladiator sandals here or the over-sized dress. Though it might look better taken in a bit and paired with heels (to add some leg length) and a proper bra.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks awesome and the only problem I have is that she should be wearing a bra. I don’t care how perky they are Charlize, put a bra on. Besides that though she looks perfect and the dress is poofy but it doesn’t look too big on her. It’s sitting right on her shoulders and it’s a great length.

    • Anonymous

      I think she looks schlumpy.

    • Valerie Owens

Gorgeous girl. Great color on her. Dress shape awful. Needs a bra. Her toes are too naturally long for toe-elongating sandals such as these. Needs a few across the toe straps to break things up.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Hate this dress. Very unflattering. Makes her boobs look flat.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Awful shape on the dress, but the color looks great on her.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love the sandals.  Agree on the color and the dress is too big.

    • Anonymous

I came back to watch the video and it’s gone :(

    • Addicted2Glamour

The sandals I don’t mind so much. But the dress is a hideous color – maybe it’s my computer screen but it looks like the color of a surgeon’s scrubs.

    • oohsparkley!

I think the color is great, but the fit on the dress is hideous.  Just because scrubs are the same color, doesn’t mean it’s a bad color.

    • Anonymous

I don’t follow Charlize Theron – don’t know much about her and don’t really care – BUT – that Dior commercial….MAN can she bring it! The commercial itself was nightmare inducing and a bit on the odd side, Charlize however, never looked more beautiful. Shazaaam! Not sure it’ll make me go out and purchase the perfume, but she was totally working it.

As for this look – it is too big for her, I like the hair, killer shoes – PUT ON A BRA!

    • Anonymous

I love the color on her. I love the shoes. The proportions of the dress look off to me so I’m not in love with this dress.

    • M Carlson

      She needs a bra.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Are you SURE thi can’t be an IN or OUT post??? Because she is OUT.
And no, I didn’t see the commercial. Beth Ditto intrigues me though, so I might have to check it out.

    • Anonymous

THAT was BD?  thank you !

    • Anonymous

Even on Charlize Theron, that’s a horrible silhouette.

    • Anonymous

Interesting commercial, her previous one where she’s taking everything off is one of my favorites. She’s just gorgeous - J’adore is a nice fragrance, I would probably wear it if my head could tolerate perfume.

    • http://twitter.com/applecocola Stacy

Fierce commercial, but nothing will ever compare to the previous one she did where she rips off her clothing item by item. That was the sexiest perfume commercial ever. Actually, just sexiest commercial ever.

OUT on the sacky green dress. IN on the Dior commercial.  A true golden girl.

    • vmcdanie

I love Charlize. Are her and her bf still refraining from marriage as a protest against gay rights? (oops, according to Google they broke up last year. I did not get that memo.)

Anyways, she’s beautiful, the hair seems fine to me and I love the sandals. The dress is bizarrely large on both her and the model but the green jewel tone is much prettier than the white in the picture. Do her bosoms seem weirdly pointy?

    • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karenlibrarian

The dress does nothing for her, either the shape or the color.  And she NEEDS A BRA.

      However, I love the sandals.

    • http://twitter.com/foodhussy foodhussy

i hate their commercials – she’s not british but she’s trying to sound it – they just annoy me with their pretentiousness

      • Anonymous

I don’t think she’s trying to sound British, nor is it pretentiousness. She’s South African. They also have what we Americans think of as an accent.

    • Anonymous

I dislike commercials and dvr everything to avoid them; however, this one kinda rocks. Don’t really care about her or the perfume, but the old starlets are cool and creepy.

    • Anonymous

She looks awesome, casual and super chic.  I love the color and I think the dress fits the way it’s supposed to fit.

    • Anonymous

I like the big loosy-ness of this cute dress.  Hate the sandals.

She looks better when she is plumped out.  She looks sick and/or tired here – like that Bosworth girl always does.

This looks like something you wear in July if you are in New York, not a September look in my opinion.  At first i figured she was in LA – then it would make more sense.

I believe the old Hollywood stars were digitally added – no impersonators there…

    • Anonymous

I want to be her in the Dior commercial.  I HATE what she’s wearing with that green get up.

    • Anonymous

Love the sandals. Won’t bother to comment on the dress. The commercial would have been fine without Ms. Theron as she’s definitely not the one that held my attention. Hadn’t seen the commercial before. Didn’t expect that!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1052062518 Megan Moore

That is freaking fabulous. I love when commercials are actually visually stunning and interesting to look at. Dior always does this well.

    • Anonymous

Beautiful woman sabotaged by ugly too-big dress. BTW: Charlie’s looking kinda skinny.

    • Anonymous

As others said here, I cannot even think about the dress because her breasts are doing some weird sticking-out-sideways thing. Didn’t she look in the mirror??? A bra would have helped tremendously!!!

    • Anonymous

Uncanny Grace Kelley was pretty amazing, too.

But this is one of the ugliest garments I have EVER seen, and I’m usually a big fan of green.

    • Anonymous

bra? She always looks so monochromatic to me for some time now – hair, skin and lips – she is a study in beige. I hate that damn dress sack.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Luke-Thomas/100001097142086 Luke Thomas

I’d never seen this commercial, it’s really well done.  I wish we could have seen a bit more of Marlene, but I suppose that was probably from older source material.

As for CT’s dress, I love this shade of green but it’s doing something odd around her eyes.  Maybe it’s makeup, not the dress color,  but she doesn’t look as glowingly healthy as usual.  The bag seems like an odd pairing, love the sandals.  I’ve come to terms that I will never agree with TLo on hair.

    • http://profiles.google.com/dwight.lake Dwight Lake

OMG wait! That washed out girl in the pics is the same person as that diva in the ad? I literally replayed the video because it only hit me after I started reading the comments lol Starlets please do not forsake your gays when you leave the set.

    • Anonymous

If that green dress fit properly, it’d work.  The white is chicly boxy, the green is sad.
Regarding the ad:  Why the hell is nobody bitching out this diva who couldn’t be bothered to make model call?  The only reason those handlers have the ability to be anxiously dressing her is because the others had the decency to show up on time so as not to stress them out.

    • Anonymous

Agreed that the green dress is too big, and with other comments that she REALLY needs a bra under that fabric.

The commercial is wonderful, but not as great as the first, where she rips her clothes off.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3HKIK7MIJMBDAQBDWEAQDTXUM theneva

I absolutely LOVE that Dior commercial. But then, I am a shameless fan of Gossip and worship Beth Ditto (I seriously wish you guys would feature her more).

    • Anonymous

She is so gorgeous, but now I can only see her as Rita. FOR BRITISH EYES ONLY.

    • Anonymous

That looks like a beach cover-up. Why would you wear it somewhere that is not the beach?

    • http://profiles.google.com/mochizukisan kyasarin mochizuki

Hate the dress. Love the color on her, but the dress needs to be torn apart and the fabric repurposed.

But, more importantly, the ad. What struck me the most about Uncanny Valley Marilyn and Uncanny Valley Marlene, once I got past the severe creep factor, was that they made real-life not-undead Charlene look…bland? Boring? Less striking? I can’t put my finger on the exact word or phrase, but those faces, even with the creepy CG, made our Miss Theron look a little…cheap or tacky or not-up-to-snuff. She’s a lovely woman, and I’d give twenty years of my life to look like her, but she’s not a remember-her-in-fifty-years-type beauty, and this ad just highlighted it. The contrast made me feel badly for her, once I stopped being creeped out.

Oh, and her makeup in the ad was awful.

    • Mary McClelland

I think she looks great. I Don’t mind that the dress looks too big, because I think its supposed to fit like that based on the model.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

a.) She needs a bra. b.) The outfit looks like a romper. c.) It’s even too big on the model and d.) If kelly green is the new black, I’m just going to wear honest-to-god-black with my brand new Fluvogs for the rest of the year.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583505025 Kelley Comfort

Not crazy about her look, but WOW to the commercial! Grace Kelly!!!!!

    • Anonymous

Whoa… those resemblances are uncanny! Pity the ad itself is so dumb.

    • Anonymous

So I know I’m the only one, but I kinda like the dress…It’s supposed to be slouchy and casual.  I mean, if you’re an Oscar winning actress, how dressed up are you supposed to be to go hawk cell phones or whatever? Yes, she should have worn a bra, and the look is more L.A. than NYC, she looks easy and breezy.

But OMG that commercial made me rewind during the Emmys and watch it 3 or 4 times.  Genius marketing. 3 distinct “types” in Marilyn, Grace and Marlene (kinda like the old ‘Mad Men’ Jackie or Marilyn thing?) -will appeal to many women. And that one model with the heavily made up eyes was very Sophia Loren, as well.
