Anne Hathaway for Tod’s

Posted on September 08, 2011

Anne Hathaway is the new face of Tod’s Fall 2011 ad campaign photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, and we’ve gotta say…

Anne Hathaway for Tod's

Anne Hathaway for Tod's

That girl can really bring the glam when she wants to.

In fact, we can’t think of a current actress who can so easily go back and forth between “endearingly gawky” and “drop-dead fierce” so easily.  It’s a big part of her considerable charm; sort of like – and don’t crucify us, queens – Barbra Streisand back in the very earliest days of her fame, when she could go from the goofy Jewish girl with the pipes and the quips to the eyeliner, nails and turban-wearing diva at the drop of a hat. And we have a feeling Anne herself would be tickled pink by the comparison.

She looks great! Having said that, I hate these kinds of ads – model randomly draped across random object with random accessories. The bags looks pretty cheap and shiny, especially for Tods. She looks like she is probably very uncomfortable, which makes the fact that she’s giving such good face even more impressive.

Sandra Bullock was/is the same way. Love Potion #9? Miss Congeniality? Gawky to glam 101.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

See, I never really buy Bullock as glam.  She looks absolutely gorgeous, don’t get me wrong, but it always seems like a shell.

      • Anonymous

Same here. Sometimes Bullock can pull of a bit of glam but for the most part I don’t think it works for her. Nothing against her.

She looks uber glam here, love it!  I truly think she is great, watching her not only in stills go from one to another but also in life is fun.  That little rap thing she did the other week on either Leno or Letterman was hysterical.  I believe she has the secret to looking great – don’t be afraid to take a risk, look a little foolish and have fun at all times.

She looks good.  The bags look like they are made of that reusable shopping material (with the thread-y look)

    • Anonymous

They do look like the eco-friendly supermarket bags! I bet they cost a bit more than 99 cents.

        ya think?

You’re right. Everything looks good here except the product they are supposedly selling.

HA! Kind of like the Oscars. Total shit this year, but she worked her butt off trying to sell it.

She looks beautiful, but does that car have no door? Why does the poor girl have to slide out of it on her back while wrestling a large handbag?

    • Anonymous

      Good point.  Aerodynamics, maybe?

    • Judy_J

Maybe you just drop into the car from above, like in the old Hertz Rental Car commercials.

      • Anonymous

Perhaps; too bad they missed their aim and left Annie sprawling like that.

No need for doors. The raw magnetic force of Tod’s Signature Collection compels the car to assemble itself around you.

“Tlo said: And we have a feeling Anne herself would be tickled pink by the comparison.”

    As she should be!

And I think it’s a true assessment of her – but it’s a shame that those pictures are so stylized/processed that her personality has been bleached out.

Comparisons to Barbra are an insult to Anne…

She would look great if she closed her mouth.

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

    Fabulous!

  • refit

She can’t get up because her lipstick weighs too much:)

  • Anonymous

She is very versatile and so beautiful. I like the second pic much better. The first one is far too awkward.

I agree with Babs comparison, but I also think of Lucille Ball.

I find her so shallow looking

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

I’m in the minority here, too.  Not shallow-looking so much as boring.  And maybe a little bit fake.  I think it’s her big, puppy dog eyes that I never quite believe in.

She reminds me of Judy Garland

On a totally unrelated topic:  I need input from the fashionista bitter kitten brigade.  I am doing a “Tim Gunn” critical edit of my closets and am struggling with a few items.  I have a vintage Ralph Lauren denim jacket I bought at Saks in 1986.  Super cool with a applique of a Jasper Johns American flag on the back.  One of my first “fashion” purchases.  Stay or go?

    • Anonymous

have you worn it recently or plan to wear it? if  no, then try to sell it or maybe frame it to display the flag and hang it up as an art piece.

    • Anonymous

Hmmm…I’m constantly doing this, and always err on the side of keep.  ( I guess that’s why I’m constantly doing this! ) So, is it really a Jasper Johns looking flag or does it veer into Tommy Hillfiger territory?  Could you at some point pass it on to a teen who would see it as vintage?  Or is it nostalgic?  You probably don’t want to wear it, but it’s hard to part with, no?

For me, this is what spacebags under the bed is for!

I have to say, though, this campaign makes me want to buy her make up, not the bags she’s holding.

Young Barbra (and 1970s Barbra) was quite the hottie. I was just thinking about that.

Off-topic, but I’ve wanted to tell you for a while your pic always makes me smile. I also watch the alt version of The Lazy Song for a pick-me-up. :-)

She should wear that lipstick at all times. Gorgeous.

    She’s very photogenic.

Never being a Streisand fan (*ducking*), I think that Hathaway, being more traditionally beautiful, actually has more versatility, looks-wise.

  • Anonymous

Hate Babs since 1976.  Before, loved her.  Love Hathaway.  Reminds me of Hepburn (Audrey) but I don’t know why.  So pretty.  So accessible.

    • Anonymous

Was it “A Star is Born” that did her in for you?  The perm was awful.

Gorge! I understand what you’re saying about the gawky/glam thing and I agree. She’s got that extra something special. Too bad you can’t bottle it and sell it. I’d probably buy it.

She really doesn’t give me “drop-dead fierce diva” unless by diva you mean random skinny model #3456234, in which case I would agree. I generally find her frail looking and boring.

    Now THAT’S our Annie!

    Very good comparison.

  • Eliza Leoni

Barbra?  No.  Anne’s got none of her charm.  She’s all overeager theater kid.  That said, she looks AMAZING here.

  • elzatelzabelz

    She looks fab & fierce.

That’s why we’re paying you boys the big bucks – keen insight. Seriously, great comparison with Babs. You are spot on. Goofball one minute, sassy-pants the next Anne is very much in the Barbra mold; What’s Up Doc versus The Way We Were (if only Annes’ new movie were another The Way We Were – oy). The ad campaign is good (not great) but Anne continues to be great (not just good).

I get a Judy Garland vibe off of her….

It is a rare quality or talent to be so versitile in front of the camera.  Being beautiful isn’t enough – look at women like Sandra Bullock – most photos of her are so awkward.

Just wanted to add that your site has been a daily read for several years – I have throughly enjoyed your humor and have actually learned quite a bit about fashion in the process. I found the Project Rungay site after we moved & I no longer had the means to watch Project Runway.  Your critiques about the entries made me look at the clothes & the judging in a totally different way. I like the new site – the layout is nicely done, but I was wondering about a couple of things. One, I keep getting an explorer message saying the scripts on the page are causing causing the computer to slow & if I want to stop the scripts – do you kno whow I can prevent this?  Also, I miss the ability to right click on each articalle to open in a new tab – the drop down boxes can be a little difficiult to work with as I’m scriollling & trying to copen the articles.

She has a really wide mouth, so if she’s smiling things get gawky and Joker rather quickly which allows her to pull off geeky girl next door. But when she isn’t grinning the proportions of her face come together in a more classic way allowing her to be a hot bombshell.

I love her, at first I was a little skeptical about her playing cat woman, but she can definitely bring the sexy fierce
