Yea or Nay: Mulberry Carter Bag

Posted on August 22, 2011

Rosie Huntington-Whitely stepped out with something worth discussing. If this was a gossip site, that would mean we’re talking about a man, but here at T Lo Style Consulting International, it means we’re talking about an accessory. An accessory other than a man, that is.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley leaving E. Baldi in Beverly Hills

All right, we know we’re supposed to talk about the bag, but that whole look is beyond fab, no? The boots, the girly little floral dress and the aviators are like a stylist’s version of “movie star.” Like something you’d see in an editorial about movie stars.

Moving in closer:

Carter Camera Bag in Suede

Carter Camera Bag in Croc-embossed Leather

Carter Camera Bag in Black Snake Embossed Leather

Mini Carter Camera Bag

It’s a simple and chic little shape (perhaps a bit too simple), but we have to say, the one she’s carrying is our least favorite. What do the precious unborn fawns think?

YEA or NAY: The Mulberry Carter Bag?

Really hate the ugly bumps on that one she’s carrying, but the bag is nicely styled and the outside pocket is super-handy. Yea to the suede and the croc.

You’ve just insulted a dead ostrich. Shame on you!

      Don’t worry, I’m not a fan of ostrich-skin either.

You can’t fool me. I know a Bible bag when I see one.

    • Anonymous

hit the nail on the head! looks just like my East TN grandma’s bible bag. for people who don’t know, yes, that is a thing.

    • MilaXX

Ha I had forgotten about those.  My grandma had a white one for her King James version.
      For the uninitiated. Bible bag

    • Anonymous

YES! That’s it exactly. Although I don’t think my mom shilled out a mortgage payment for her Bible bag.

Woman, I KNEW I’d seen these before but couldn’t dredge up the memory. Oh, yes! We Catholics didn’t have them but our Southern Baptist neighbors sure did.

    • Anonymous

I am so glad you pointed that out! I remember my cousin with her bible bag. Always dressed to the nines for church, too.

    meh.

Feh. They’re a bit too simple for my taste. Though I like the others a little better than the one she has, because I loathe ostrich leather with a fierce passion.

I concur about ostrich leather – gross

    • Anonymous

I LOVE ostrish (embossed?) leather  – gorgeous.  I agree with Tlo that the one she is carrying is the best of the bunch

TLo meant the one she has is the worst of the bunch.

Am I the only one who wishes the trend of embossed/croc/alligator/python bags would run its course?  Every time I see one, I’m absolutely grossed out.  Totally.  To the max.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jude-Brown/1350939326 Jude Brown

I’ve never been a fan of flesh-colored leather that makes a point of where the pin feathers were plucked out.  Ooooh, ick let’s remind everyone you’re hauling around a clutch of dead animal skin.

    • Anonymous

That’s what makes those bumps on leather? This is how dopey I am…never knew that. Always disliked the bumps, but now I loathe them! Makes me shiver a little bit.

The ostrich leather is very popular for cowboy boots (I live in Texas).  And I really don’t mind it on boots.  But on anything else…yuck.

I agree with you, RebeccaKW!  My husband has some ostrich boots and they are fabulous!  But this bag is hiddy in the ostrich.

I’m not against animal products.  (Sorry, I like leather and steak… at least I’m willing to use more of the animal that died for me:)  But ostrich comes from a bird.  And while I believe that all birds should be killed before they rise up against mankind — there was a very mean goose in my childhood and I’m emotionally scarred for life — I don’t want any reminders of the beastly creatures.

They’re fine; not lighting any fires for me. Those boots, however, I NEED. I just bought a 60s-style miniskirt and I want a pair of boots exactly like that to wear with it (and with other stuff, of course). I can’t, however, find them anywhere except on the feet of other girls, and I don’t want them THAT much.

    • Anonymous

LOL–your post reminded me:  I wore knee-length “go-go” boots in the 60s and thought I was hot stuff.  Mind you, I was maybe 12 at the time.  Ah, the follies of youth!

  • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

I’m not a fan of ostrich, but I like the idea of the bag. The suede one is fab.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

The bag is a bit “Emporer’s new clothes.”  It looks like all the cheap bags I carried when I was a kid years ago.  If it were hanging on a rack at Walmart or some other “House of Shit” clothing outlet, not one of these women would touch it but because it has a designer name, they carry it around.  Ridiculous.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I like the croc embossed best.  I’m not crazy about the weird bumps on hers.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

And on a side note, I really wished you guys did normal people the other day when I was at a friend’s wedding and he wore the single UGLIEST suit I’ve ever seen!  It begged for TLo commentary to help make sense of it all:)

  • AudraR

I love ostrich skin, super cute bag I’ll take one of each.

(Conversely, I’d be much more interested to see what’s in the jewelry case this bag is obviously not big enough for)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

She looks PERFECT. Damn, this girl has terrific styling instincts. I like all the bags equally, so YEA.

    • Anonymous

I agree. It’s not a look that one would immediatley put together, but it’s got a randomness that works. The pieces don’t necessarily “match,” but definitely go together to make a very stylish, fresh and modern look.

Ostrich leather only looks good on ostriches. And frankly, not so good on THEM, either. Why do you think they stick their heads in the sand? Even they’re a little ashamed to flaunt such bumpy skin!

I was going to say “High end, ugly Bible bag she’s got there” but I see previous commenters beat me to it. Ostrich skin freaks me out. I like the bag well enough in black but only as a gift. For my Bible and Tarot cards.

Nay on all of ‘em.   All that suede one needs is some suede fringe hanging off the strap to look just like one I had in 1970.
As for the rest, while it i’s hard to get past those wax lips she’s got on, the dress looks like she altered her grandmother’s favorite mumu.

    • Anonymous

The lips! Seriously!! I couldn’t take any part of the outfit seriously with those unnatural lips staring at me! She looks like she’s having an allergic reaction in the second picture!

  • Anonymous

Not digging that color on the one she is carrying, but I like that first rust/cognac-colored one. Nice size and practical looking.

  • MilaXX

YEA to the bag & I agree she does look fab. I’m not a huge fan of chain straps but I would carry this on occasion.  I prefer it in suede though.

  • Anonymous

I love the first one in the still shots.  I like that orangey color.

But I hate that dress.  It’s so pink, a color I have never liked, and it looks cheap to me.  Sorry.

  • Anonymous

At least it doesn’t cost $45,000 and is made out of an endangered species.

For that it gets an IN.

  • Anonymous

Yay, but I agree – I don’t like the version she’s carrying. Give me the suede or croc.

  • Alyson Lamble

The dress is cute but I’d have gone with a pair of shoes other than boots.  As for the bag, nay in the version Rosie is carrying.  That textured leather makes it look like the bag’s got the measles.

  • aussiegal77

Loved the Carter Camera bag in croc.  Dislike Rosie’s version.  But agree her floral + boots outfit is lovely.

  • muzan-e

I love the suede take on that bag, although I wish it were a darker, burnt-copper sort of a shade.

Also, I have those boots. Well. Boots distinctly like them.  And on seeing this, I’m relieved to discover that they give everyone else cankles, too.

  • Anonymous

I can’t comment with 100% certainty on the bag because I can’t see the inside.  For me the criteria go 1) exterior look, then 2) interior division of space.  I don’t care how chic and perfect a bag is if it’s just one large hole inside.  Partitions!  Pockets!  Zippered compartments!  That said, I guess this is fine from the outside, but nothing special and certainly not unique.

NAY Sorry, it’s ugly. I’ve seen little old ladies carrying FAR cuter purses purchased from Ross.  I am not a fan of the ostrich leather either (is that what it is?).  The bumps looks like a skin problem.  This purse actually is actually becoming kind of disgusting to me the longer I hyperfocus on it.  Sorry, hon.

But the dress is really cute!

Lukewarm Yea to the bags. They’re nice enough but nothing to get carried away about. And yes, I associate the leather on the bag she’s carrying with cheap knock-offs from the 80′s.

Overall, however, she looks as close to an-idealized-Laurel Canyon-look as anybody has since the look was imprinted on my little duckling brain in the 70′s.

    (edited for clarity of reference)

    • Anonymous

Looking at it some more, I might have her address wrong, but I’m fairly certain she’s on her way to guest on Dick Cavett or (less likely) Johnny Carson. (Johnny will hit on her unmercifully).

    • Anonymous

you’re right, it’s the perfect lady of the canyon look, and i lovelovelove the boots.  i’m neutral on the purse ( although the mini bag in red is cute).  in the second picture she looks like she’s snarling at the camera.  like she just got woke up and she’s looking to deck somebody.

  • Anonymous

    yea.

I can’t muster up an opinion in this one.  It’s fine but not superfab.  I like the spots of the ostrich leather; the other ones look too plain. I do love her outfit otherwise though!
