WERQ: Sarah Jessica Parker in Prabal Gurung

Posted on August 30, 2011

After ripping her pretty hard yesterday, we’re happy to give SJP a respite from our bitchiness — because she’s earned it.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Prabal Gurung

It’s truly amazing how much the right hair and makeup makes a difference. Ninety percent of the ladies in the readership just rolled their eyes and said “Tell me something I didn’t learn by the time I was 15, bitches.” But seriously, she looks ten years younger here than she did in that Red Riding Hood getup she sported the other night. We’re not sure why she keeps going out with ratty, teased-out hair when these soft waves are so much prettier and more flattering. We also don’t know why she tries to sport those big fashion-y gowns when sleek dresses with visual impact work so much better for her. This is a spectacular dress. We’re not entirely on board with the uneven bands of red, but they do tend to keep it from being predictable. And speaking of predictable, we’re getting mighty tired of those Ferragamo pumps, which means, of course, that we’ve barely scratched the surface of their impending ubiquity on the red carpet. Right about the time we noted “Say, there’ve been quite a few nude pumps lately…” the red carpet exploded with ladies in Silly Putty shoes and it hasn’t let up for months. But that’s enough bitchiness. SJP is WERQing it. Excellent dress and pretty hair. Head rolls and snaps up all around.

Ug…3/4 sleeves are a gals worst enemy. They give you Monkey Arms…they look 5 ft long!

    • Anonymous

      Should have worn the gloves.

    • Anonymous

3/4 sleeves are an older gal’s best friend, as they cover the tragedy of the aging upper arms.

    • Anonymous

I hate 3/4 sleeves too.  Especially wearing them…I either want to pull them down or push them over my elbows.  But SJP is werqing the heck out of these.

    • Anonymous

I like 3/4 length sleeves. A nice balance between being all covered up and showing more skin than a particular look calls for. I think it works particularly well on this dress.

        I think they’re very feminine

      • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I agree. I’ve always liked the 3/4 length sleeve because it can make anyone look like she has long, graceful arms.  I always thought it was a flattering length until I started reading fashion posts. Glad to know there are some people who agree with me.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

It depends on the woman.  Ignore the people who say how unflattering they are — they say the same thing about skirts that hit just below the knee, and that length is great on me.

      • Now I am The Bee

I like them, too.  As someone who has arms that are actually 5′ long, a 3/4 length sleeve makes my limbs look a bit more delicate.  And they look beautiful on this dress!

      • Anonymous

And of course the other name for them is “bracelet sleeves”, for obvious reasons…

    • Anonymous

I love 3/4 sleeves. If I wear long sleeves, I always end up pushing them to that same spot anyway.

      • Anonymous

        Me too!

  • Anonymous

Totally agree. I am so glad to see that her insanity the other day was only temporary. Luuuuuv this dress.

  • Anonymous

I was one of the few that loved the cape and I love this, too!  Lovely!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

At least the shoes look like they fit, which seems to be a rare occurrence on the red carpet…

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

LOVE this dress. She looks awesome

  • Anonymous

I really like the stockings the model is wearing with the dress.  Seems much more visually interesting than the matchy-matchy shoes SJP is wearing.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Interesting dress.  Fabulous shoes.  Still not crazy about her hair.

  • Kathy Schrenk

The styling on SJP is so much better than on the model. I love those shoes!

  • Anonymous

Sorry.  She still looks fairly scary to me.  This is a great dress and  would frankly work on anyone with her body type.  And who could go wrong with those shoes?  Those are some of the fiercest shoes in the business.  Love.  Kill to have them.  They looked great on Lake Bell a few pages back when everything else from the ankles up was tragic and they look good here.  But really, she’s not bringing anything to the party, imo.

    • Anonymous

I was thinking the same thing. The shoes are beyond fab, but I think she looks kind of dowdy in that dress. It’s probably just the placement of the red band, so it’s only partially her fault. I mean, she chose to wear it. It’s not doing anything for her and she’s not doing anything for the dress.

Still, it’s a damn sight better than that Monument to Narcissism she wore in Russia. And her hair looks great here.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ailsa-Martin/644946901 Ailsa Martin

Can’t deny she looks gorgeous. Love the shoes, and the dress – but I can’t shake the image of a madman running past her holding out a knife…

    • Anonymous

      Did I miss something?

i think she’s referencing the slashes of red?

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ailsa-Martin/644946901 Ailsa Martin

Yeah… I mean, I love it, but my first thought was that she looked like someone had slashed her across the torso.

  • http://fafafab.tumblr.com/ fafafab

    Carries Bradshaw lives!

  • Anonymous

She looks fabulous overall, it’s true. And it’s a great dress… except I do not like the curved red belt. It gives even tiny, super-slim SJP the appearance of a pot belly.

  • Anonymous

I’m sure it’s just my screen, but the contrasting stripe looks red, orange, and/or pink depending on the photo!  Not that it matters; I think it’s an unneccessary touch, but overall this is a 100% improvement over the cape/dress.   I still can’t believe how horrible her hair and makeup looked.

  • Anonymous

Not a fan of the slope on the abdominal band of red (unflattering even on our stick thin SJP) but love the dress, and you are right about those shoes. Because when I saw them I thought “now, those are shoes that are worth the crippling pain!”   (Which, I imagine SJP does not often experience because her feet are habituated & her shoes are well made)

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, red bands and all. I also love the stockings worn by the model.
I do like the hair here (but I don’t think this would have been so good with the gown) . I think it’s something else too, like the more flattering lighting or gauze on the camera lens that is helping her look younger.
And again BLECH to the story.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, the stockings are fabulous. I’m not surprised that SJP steered away from re-creating the runway look exactly, but I could imagine her wearing this with a different pair of patterned stockings or tights.

  • Anonymous

This is definitely an improvement.  I agree on the odd red strips of color, they’re just a bit jarring.  And I’m sure I will grow to hate those shoes as I don’t really care for them now, much less after we’ve seen them a thousand times.  But this is head and shoulders about yesterday’s red alert.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LCM5POTSHO74MUOQO6IAV4YUBE Jessica

I think it’s smart that she had it hemmed to the right length – if she’d left it the length that it was (you can tell by looking at where the pattern ends on the models’ version versus hers), it would have looked too matronly (even with the red bands).  Good styling instincts?

  • Anonymous

I’m one of the dingbats who sort of liked the cat feet getup, but I agree this is an enormous improvement. Her hair looks gorgeous and I really hope it makes some people question the erroneous belief that once you hit a certain age you can’t do long, loose hair.

I really hate this style of shoe and I am really not looking forward to seeing it everywhere. Give me some clompy Minnie Mouse pumps any day.

  • Anonymous

A much improved look but did Josh M. just have to drop by to add his finishing touch with the red bands? I’m not sold on the panel down the middle and the lighter color at the side as they aren’t the most flattering, even on SJP.

  • Anonymous

She does look so much better, even though I’m not crazy about the dress. Way too busy. And I hate that hair. It starts out okay, but it peters out way too soon; cut off the bottom 4 inches maybe. Her hair looked best when it was chin-length on SATC. It worked perfectly with her profile and jawline. Softened and enhanced at the same time.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. She looks so pretty. I still think she should chop a few inches off that mop of hers, but she does look infinitely better when her hair is groomed and tamed.
I love that dress. Love the pop of red too. I really think the hose used in the runway version is fantastic with it, but it’s perhaps too young a look for SJP. Those shoes certainly have been making the rounds, but they’re pretty fab and they look great with this dress.

  • Caitlin Gozdecki

she looks BETTER but I really dislike the red bands…

  • Sara S Rummell

I love the red stripes…without those this dress would be boring.  And those shoes work with this outfit but I fear they will be paird with many, many wrong dresses.

  • Anonymous

I really do not like this dress on her, I must be missing something.

  • lilibetp

You call that a “WERQ”?  I call it a “I didn’t realize she was five months pregnant…  But at only five months, you’d think she could still shave her legs.”

  • http://twitter.com/UnEspritTordu Brenda Williams

Don’t like the placement of the color above the stomach.  Makes you focus your attention right where you don’t want it!

  • Anonymous

Love the overall look, but would have loved it even more with a textured hose. I still haven’t quite gotten over yesterday’s visual assault, but this is a 100% improvement. My only other quibble is that she could lose a couple of inches from that mane of hers.

  • Anonymous

She looks wonderful here. Like TLo, I’m not sold on those red/pink/orange gashes across the dress (it looks as if she’s been knifed and is bleeding through the dress–sorry for the horrible image, but that’s immediately what came to mind), but I agree they add some interest. I think she’s better with sleeker, more fitted dresses–the voluminous ball gowns just swallow her up.

  • Anonymous

I’m not happy with the shoe choice.  I don’t mind the red on the sleeves, but the band of red on the torso, coupled with the pattern at the exact same spot, gives the illusion of a baby bump.  The hair is better.  Wish she had on some lipstick.  Even gloss.  But my god, the eyes!  In the 2nd to last picture-demon eyes.

But really, she’s an In.  Even though now I’m worried she’s been possessed.

  • Anonymous

I’ll go along with this WERQ. In addition to wearing the right dress, she has the details right, too. I’m not loving the red fabric detail, either, but it isn’t a deal breaker for me. Her hair is such an improvement, that alone is worth a WERQ, although she could still stand to lose about 3 inches off the bottom.

I agree. I love that dress and she looks radiant.

Nope.  I don’t like it:  the hair is too young and I think the dress is another blast from the Fashion Cannon.

  • Amanda in Austin

The eye make-up needs some improvement, but I give thumbs up to all the rest of it. That dress is crave-worthy.

    • Anonymous

I’m glad I’m not the only one who still dislikes those raccoon eyes.  They’re better than yesterday’s but still pretty awful.  Yesterday she looked drugged; today she looks mildly deranged.

I do like the dress, though — enven the red slashes.

  • Anonymous

These looks work (or WERQ?) on her because she is petite. The ball gown looks kind of swallow her up.

Nice recovery SJP.  This look totally works for her.  Though I will always be distracted by her veiny arms and feet.

I don’t like the red bands. It looks like she’s supporting some cause and the one on the torso is just wrinkled and ill concieved. I saw a writeup in a London paper about the red cape and the suggestion was that she wore it to cover her ugly, scrawny arms.

  • Anonymous

I like the splash of red on the dress, but I don’t like the way they used it.  It makes her look poochy and the dress looks wrinkled and ill-fitting.

  • Anonymous

The silhouette works better for her, but that’s an odd little dress. It’s just not WERQing for me. And her eye makeup is making her look possessed.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like her makeup and hair at all. She really, really, really needs an update suitable for her age and stage of life. The dress is terrific. The shoes are a boring choice.

  • MilaXX

Much improved for all the reasons you listed. She looks good here.

  • Sara__B

The only things I like are the shoes. Perhaps it’s that old and tired hairstyle fighting with the white around the shoulders, but I’m not impressed.

  • Anonymous

This is honestly the first time I have ever actually liked anything that SJP has worn. I know it is heretical to admit, but I saw exactly one episode of SATC, and I never received the memo that I was supposed to be enthralled by it. I have never understood why SJP has been worshiped so fervently, but then I have a stunted style/fashion gland and am deficient in this area.

However, this dress I love, and I actually think she looks lovely here.

Since I am in the sharing mood…as far as her acting goes, she peaked at “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” which I LOVED when I was a teenager.

  • Anonymous

Adore the dress.  The dress is WERQing.

  • Anonymous

I love that pump. It’s killer. And very flattering on SJP. Totally makes the look for me.

  • Anonymous

The eye makeup is WAY too heavy, especially during a day shoot. Makes her look like she has little beady rat eyes.  Like the dress, shoes, hair, but I’m tired of seeing the ubiquious center part with long hair on her, Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz, Gwyenth Paltrow, JLo, the list goes on.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress. Makeup is great (unlike yesterday’s) and the shoes are OK-especially if you want to KICK something with the pointy metal toe. Fierce toes! But…although the hair looks pretty, I wish she’d give up the Alice-in-Wonderland thing. It actually makes her look older.

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

Boys, are you running a fever? All I see is a nightmare of a dress.

SJP is utterly washed away by that thing. She’s underlined her boobs for crying out loud! In red! WERQ means putting the model to shame, and the model is chuckling and sending this pic to all her friends going, “Isn’t sad when she pretends she’s as cool as me?”

  • Now I am The Bee

This is killer on SJP!  Its a great dress–love the length and the sleeve length.  It makes her look chic and, dare I say, womanly.
And I absolutely love the pumps.  Shoes like these will always be in style…which is more than I can say for all the Silly Putty, huge bear trap or towering platform shoes we’ve seen in the last two years.  Ugh.   Give me a delicate, falettering pump any day!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

I don’t like the dress so much- lace print on opaque fabric is an oxymoron- like Modest Hooker.

  • Mariah J

I can’t get behind the pink stripe across the middle. Other than that its perfect….that stripe is really really distracting though

  • Anonymous

Wow. She looks fab. I love, love, love that dress. LOVE! And the shoes are perfect with it. I don’t think I’ll get as tired of these as I did the nudes – they seem to come in a variety of combos and they’re killer. Also, no platforms! SJP totally WERQ-in’ it.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Hate those shoes, but she looks so soft and pretty here.  I like the dress.

  • Anonymous

I like SJP,, to me she is what an every day plain looking woman can aspire to.   She brings plainness to new heights.
it is her attitude and I applaud her for it.    All of the plain women should play it like she does and become winners in their own lives.
    Good for her!

    Love the shoes!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AYQCICXEN2CCDBFV5HED4Z2RUA Dee B

Her makeup’s still wrong.  Way too harsh around the eyes. She looks possessed in the second to last photo.

  • Anonymous

I like it, all of it! I think if the red line was straight across it would be off putting, but as it is with a curve makes it more interesting. What a difference a day makes!

  • Anonymous

    Nice. WERQ it!

  • Anonymous

I just don’t see this as WERQin’. The dress is bizarre, and the red band would make anyone look sloppy. I’ve defended her black liner numerous times, but it’s starting to bug me. She needs to lighten that shit up. I think her hair looks really pretty here, but she’d do well to lose a several inches of it. Bring it up to where it brushes the shoulders, or even just below the shoulders. She’ll still have plenty of hair, and a lot more motion than she gets with the extra length.

Everyone always gangs up on her, and I feel bad when I’m part of the gang. But she so seldom gets it just right. This is not one of those times when she does.

Now, if she’d lessen the raccoon effect around her eyes, she’d be even better.

The curved band of red around the torso is the devil’s handiwork. Makes even uber-skinny SJP look like she’s got a tummy. Should be more of an Empire-waist feature if it’s there at all. Other than that, she looks fantastic.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IQLI7NTDM22M7DLPNE7HWMH25A Al

I love this look. Chic, wearable and very NYC. She tends to dress maturely to the point of supper dinner hostess but this time she got it right. Love the skirt with the top in a “ballet dancer going to movie premiere” way. WERQ

  • Anonymous

Soooo much better… This is her style niche (romantic, yet classy, with odd details) and she should stick with it. I can’t wait till the cone bra shoes are safely in fashion’s past, however.

I still liked that cape dress, although maybe not for her. I have a weird obsession with capes though.

  • Anonymous

I might have gone for red riding hood, but the severe hair and claw shoes put it over the top for me.

    Love this, though.

  • Anonymous

She looks 200% better here than she did in that red getup.  I still don’t care for her hair, while completely acknowledging that it too looks far better here.  Personally, I think it’s high time she got a good haircut.  Something around chin length seems right.

  • Anonymous

I’m not a fan of those shoes but she looks amazing. Great dress, make-up, and hair.

I hate the red bands – I like the splash of color, but hate how it was done. Otherwise, she looks fabulous. And even if those Salvatore Ferragamo shoes are going to be the over worn this season, I still love them and would happily take a pair myself.

  • Anonymous

I like the unevenness of the red bands because it is interesting to my eye.  Aren’t her shoes the same CFM shoes that Lake Bell just wore with her hooker outfit at some movie premiere?  I am happy she redeemed herself with this look and these shoes which I adore.  I hope she loses her lion paw shoes asap.

Dayum that is a cute dress

    Much better!

    eh.  bored.

  • Anonymous

I’m just over her hair completely. She’s been working the same style for what…a dozen years now? As she ages it’s not the most flattering. Her forehead is huge and she really could use some layers around her face to soften it. It’s time to make a change.

But as for the outfit — it works.

  • Anonymous

I like this on her. And she did a better job with the pumps than the other woman that wore them.

  • Anonymous

    Lovely.

  • Anonymous

So I hate these stupid half-moon curls the hair industry is currently trying to foist on us.  There, I’ve said it.  They are a lot of work, which is ironic given they are supposed to be “natural” looking. A half moon curl is created by curling just the middle section of hair.  If you don’t place your curling iron exactly right the ends stick out something awful.  SJP has the luxury of having a trained professional do her hair, so it mostly worked on her. But look at the first and last snaps.  See how the ends are sticking out? If this trend takes you’re going to see a lot of women with hair that looks like they started to be electrocuted.

    • Anonymous

And if you don’t do anything to the top, your hair looks both straggly and weighed down. Seems like a contradiction, I know.

I still think her hair looks pretty though.

      • Anonymous

Her hair does look better than it has in a while. I’d be very enthusiastic if she would consider a new do altogether, though!

        • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I’d faint from shock if she changed her hair. I think she’s very emotionally tied to her long hair, not an uncommon thing. Someone upthread suggested she go chin length. That would work, but as I mentioned in another comment, she could also improve it a lot just by cutting off 4-5 inches. It wouldn’t be as traumatic for her.

It’s remarkable how much better she looks here.

Though her face and hair looks much better, the outfit is neither great nor bad, just straight down the middle of the road. Now I ask, does a gal deserve a WERQ just because she looks exceptionally better from one day to the other, or because a gal is WERQing an exceptional piece of clothing combined with exceptional attitude and accessories?  Cus I’m pretty sure SJP is not doing the latter of the two.

    Stunning

Guess I am in the minority: not WERQing it. Then again, I am not on the SJP Party Boat anyway. (Aren’t her 1500 minutes up?) I liked her when she was younger, but since she was dubbed a “style/fashion icon” nope. Partly because she has people that dress her – so if you aren’t dressing yourself, how can it be that you are an icon? It isn’t your style! It is someone else telling you what your style is.

then again, what do I know? I keep hoping Stacy and Clinton will show up at my door and clean out my closet!

I need those shoes in my life!

Agree with everything except the hair. She has a long narrow face and that loooong, center-parted hair does her no favours. Plus — she’s ten years too old for hair that long. Even Jennifer Aniston — who might be more famous for her hair than for her acting — finally got a clue and a haircut.

  • Anonymous

Sorry, no, must disagree. Shoes and hair: good. That dress it awful.

I really, really hate the dress. I hate it on the model as much as I hate it on SJP. It’s waaaaay too busy. The red curve under the bust gives her preg-belly, which might have been cool in Vermeer’s time but is not cool now unless you actually are pregnant.

The V-shaped thing below that makes her thighs look as if they’re straining out of the dress, which is quite an illusion considering that SJP is extremely lean. A dress that creates curves is good; a dress that makes your legs look like they should be hanging in a window in the Italian Market is not good.

It would be a very nice outfit on anyone but her, even Miss Piggy would do it more justice.

  • Tamara Hogan

I’d like that dress a lot more if the red accent was straight-up Empire – a horizontal slash – instead of drooping sadly to the sides as it does. That is not an attractive location for women to sag. Love the Ferragamos.

    That is one ugly dress!

Yea, she looks much better here than she did in that red cape dress.  I like the dress, but the red slash across the middle is sort of squicky.  And I think all that eyeliner makes her look OLD.

Nice enough, I suppose, but nothing outstanding. The red accents are a bit off, for me.  there’s no jewelry, which would have helped a lot.  And I’m still not crazy about her hair.  So it’s okay, but if there’s gonna be some WERQ thrown around, I think it should be thrown in Julie M’s direction for that fabu skirt in the previous post.  She was far more polished and sophisticated and working the look, imho.

I don’t like the red, but I am more concerned that there is no fence on that roof!! I would be sweating bullets, so kudos to her for not glancing over her shoulder in every picture.

Edit: Never mind. It is glass. Duh!

Awww. *There’s* my girl. I’m delighted that she’s come back from that tragic red-caped number

    WHEW!  That’s more like it!

i have to say that i think you might be smoking crack when it comes to those shoes because they are fierce! i especially love the hounds tooth (or possibly plaid) print on the underside of the shoe.

That dress makes her look pregnant.

I’ve been a fan since her Square Pegs days but even I couldn’t get behind that red cape with the paw shoes. Oy. SO much better today SJP!

    YAY!  Me love

  • Anonymous

SJP  could have pulled this off with wearing a hat, a big black hat with a tiny pink feather on the side of it. She is too light and frail for what this dress is asking. She is too SJP wearing this dress. Give us a Katee Sackhoff or someone who has more darkness in their character palette. Emma Stone could gave this something.

Her hair and makeup is SO much better!

And I think the red line accentuates her figure nicely.  Bravo!

The red detail might have been nicer if it were thinner, like piping. It looks like she ran a race, crossed the finish line first, and the ribbon stuck to her body. I don’t love this, but I don’t really hate it either. IN/OUT.

Her hair does look very pretty like that. Now if she would just stop lining her eyes so heavily….

I just love it when you see a famous woman looking like her pretty self in a pretty dress.  It makes me realize how often these people are reduced to being props  for stylists and hair and makeup people.

hey i love those shoes.  don’t talk mean about my babies.  i agree she looks much prettier and healthier here, but i’m not buying those cherry red stripes on the dress.  unpredictable, yes, but there’s a reason for that.

I really love the dress, I’d wear it in a heartbeat.
