WERQ: Diane Kruger in Jason Wu

Posted on August 11, 2011

We were going to do this as an “In or Out” but like bratty little kids with a favorite toy, we snatched up Diane Kruger, clutched her to our chests and said “MINE MINE MINE! You can’t have this one!”

Figuratively speaking, of course.

Diane Kruger attends the 10th Annual InStyle Summer Soiree at in West Hollywood, California in head-to-toe Jason Wu.

Jason Wu Resort 2012 Collection/Model: Cora Keegan

We don’t like when a person steps out in “head to toe” anything, and we really don’t like it when they mimic the designer’s styling by pairing the pieces exactly as the model wore them (at least there’s some variation with the shoes), but we’re going to have to throw our rules out the window for this one because she looks freaking FABULOUS. Love the shoes; ambivalent about the clutch and hair, but J’ADORE the look as a whole. In fact, looking fabulous is only partially the reason for awarding her the much-coveted WERQ. It’s also because she’s walking that red astroturf carpet looking totally original (at least for a red carpet). Any gal who can break free of the goddess-gowns-or-cocktail-dresses restrictions of the red carpet and do it looking so chic deserves as many snaps up as two queen can manage. Girl, you WERQ that 21st Century Dietrich shit!

But sweetie, stop arching your back for pictures. That works in a dress, but not in a menswear-inspired look.

Yeah, the posture is really weird for this outfit.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

Cater-water from the waist up, and hot pants 1970 from the neck down

If she were standing behind the bar at this event, you’d order an alcoholic beverage.

I’ll give you the shoes, tho.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

I meant, of course, “hot pants 1970, from the down.”

          As for the clutch, eh.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

wow, something ate my “waist” in the above sentence.

    • Anonymous

What’s with all the clutches?  Is it just me, or are they multiplying?  Back to our friend, she does look fabulous!  I’ve been a fan or hers ever since Inglorious Basterds… wonderful performance!!

      • http://twitter.com/bredalot Breda Smith

Right? I didn’t expect to like her in that, but she was FANTASTIC. I was blown away. And I’ve loved her ever since! Not to mention she’s got that remarkable ability to wear weird couture and look fabulous AND look like herself, which I really admire. (Cate Blanchett is, of course, the best at this. But with both of them, I just look at them and go, “God, you’re awesome.”)

      • http://twitter.com/The_Bugler Anna Daugherty

        That’s a BINGO!

    • Anonymous

Oddly, I like it, even though she looks as though she should be handing me the dessert menu.  But there does seem something off about the blouse.  Wrinkly?  Not fitting quite right at the waist?  Maybe she should have completely copied the model and worn a belt.

    • Anonymous

Did she have to have the same hair style as the model too?

But but but–shorts!!  Is this an emerging trend–jackets and shorts??  Ick!!

      • http://twitter.com/rachelruthlee Rachel Lee

Agreed! I personally think she looks terribly mismatched. And I hate hate formal shorts.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

I agree- if a man wore anything remotely like this T&L would rip it to shreds

        • Anonymous

Agree. I think “formal shorts” is an oxymoron. I applaud her for breaking the red carpet mold, and the shoes and clutch are gorgeous, and she looks pretty from the neck up, and yay for the manicure/pedicure, but a waiter’s jacket, bow tie, and “formal shorts?”  I’m afraid that adds up to WORK, not WERQ.

          • Anonymous

Yeah the more I look at this outfit the more I dislike it.  The jacket doesn’t fit her, neither does the shirt, really. And the whole notion of shorts and a tux style jacket seems tragically wrong headed to me.  Busboy at the local steak house?

            • Anonymous

Yup. She looks like she is on her way to a costume party dressed as The Very Naughty Waiter.

            • Anonymous

The Very Naughty Waiter sound like a title for an old Monty Python skit.  LOVE it.

Agree – not a fan of the shorts and she looks completely mismatched.  I hate the shoes with that outfit.

          • Anonymous

The shoes are, in fact, the only part of this outfit I like. She looks like she’s off to work at Party Down.

I wish! It kinda irritates me that I can wear a skirt at work but not shorts of the same length.

      • Anonymous

So those are shorts? I couldn’t tell and was trying to convince myself it was the second shortest skirt I’d ever seen. Not that it made me like it any more. When I looked at the first photo, I thought she was wearing teal ankle socks.

This is just not working for me.

Thank you, Diane, for remembering to get a pedicure before hitting the astroturf in sandals.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583724222 Christy Maxedon Morrison

Yeah, there is something off with the shirt. Maybe a more tailored one would work better? And I’m sorry, but those shoes are just wrong.

    • Anonymous

      Ew! Out!
The tone of the blues (navy vs. turquoise) just bothers me. Either match the tone (a true pale blue) or don’t match the color (a nice orange or yellow or maybe even a pale or bright green).
And I won’t even mention the shorts and jacket issue.

    • Anonymous

      A+ for braking the standards

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

Wow, those are some wicked sandals, and I don’t even normally like aqua.  I’d wear those everywhere if they were comfortable enough.  She looks great in the shorts–THIS is an example of how to do fancy shorts.  I’m going to start referring to them as fancy shorts.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NOKXDCD5D666MCRGNZBNH7QWRA katie

umm- she looks like a catering waiter. are you serious? amazing shoes though.

    • Anonymous

My complaint would again be the high heels with the shorts (just as with a very mini skirt).  I think it looks out of balance and kind of cheap

    • Anonymous

I will cut her for those shoes.  Really.

    • Ruth Fischer

GAH.  No.  She looks wrinkled and frumpy.

    • Anonymous

Ick. Hate the clutch, hair, shoes.

    • Anonymous

Although I agree she should be recognized for doing something different on the astroturf carpet, I just can’t get on the formal shorts bandwagon.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

WERQ?  Really?  I think this is a hot mess from head to toe.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, I’m not getting the  TLO love except that it’s different, but different isn’t always better (and I think Kruger has a wonderful innate sense of style, I just don’t know that I always am willing to go as far as she can).  The whole bowtie thing just looks silly to me, the jacket looks too roomy, and the blues on the jacket and the shoes clash.  Nope, I can’t.

    • Lies L.

She can do very little wrong in my eyes. She looks great almost all the time, and this is no exception. Also, 21st century Dietrich => excellent. Marrrrlene would approve.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

No, Dietrich would NOT approve of shorts with a formal jacket.

    • Anonymous

Good points?  Original for the red carpet, looks good on her. I even like the pale strange green clutch.
Bad points? I loathe shorts for formal events, besides they only end up looking just like a gyno mini anyhow. And Geez Diane, could you at least have had your hair dressed differently from the model?

      • Anonymous

        I take it all back.
On further inspection.  I really kind of hate this, top to toe.

    • Anonymous

If this had been an IN/OUT…I’d have gone with OUT….but since it’s not, I’ll just disagree on it being a WERQ.

I really like the shorts and shoes are perfect with them, and the outfit in general.  I’m ok with the idea of the tux shirt and jacket, but each look too loose/baggy (especially at her stomach)…each should be more fitted and the shirt should be more crisp. The tie is corny…I hate it.  Her hair is a mess.  She looks really sloppy from the waist up.  Although I like the detail at the waist of the shorts, I think a belt with a buckle, like the model has, would look better.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

I don’t see the attraction- she looks like the usher in a very stylish movie theater.

      • Anonymous

Exactly! Upon viewing the first word that came to mind was “usherette”. All she needs is a perky little hat.

    • Anonymous

      Love the shoes!

    • Anonymous

Oh, I love the clutch. Pretty, buttery yellow! I’ll also take those shoes in a size 9, please.

    • Anonymous

      Pee-wee Herman.

    • Anonymous

I don’t know why but for some reason, the shoes make me think of someone wearing striped socks with sandals.  Not a fan.

    • Anonymous

It looks like she’s gained about 20#, all in the waist.  Silly and costumey.  I might be able to buy it if the shirt was fitted so you could see a shape under the jacket and if the shorts were bermuda length.  No, even with those changes, it would still be too costumey.

      Love the shoes.

    • Anonymous

It’s like a mullet but for clothes…server on top, party on the bottom.

I personally hate the tuxedo look on women.  However, I would like those shoes to be mine.

    • http://twitter.com/DaggerMitten Laur.

I lurv high heels and shorts together! She looks fab, I would steal this look.

    • Anonymous

OMG I hate this get-up from head to toe. It may be original, but it’s still damned ugly–and unflattering to boot. I will give her this, her shoes are apparently the right size.

    • Christine Campbell

I wish she wasn’t sticking her butt out so the jacket would fall on her correctly because it is fabulous and those shoes?  I die!  It is a great look, indeed.  Well done, diane!  You always look so amazing that one day i will stop begruding you the love of pacey witter.

    • Anonymous

I know it’s a WERQ post, but I give it an OUT. I don’t think formal shorts can be WERQ’ed. This look just doesn’t jive.

    • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

I have little quibbles (would have preferred the jacket a smidge more tailored, a different clutch, different hair). But overall, she is WERQing the shit out of that look.

    • Judy_J

Those shoes!  Fabulous!  Yes, this whole ensemble looks fabulous on Diane.  I love her hair, too.  You’re right, though….the arched back posture does make the shirt look like it’s coming untucked or something.

    • Judy_J

    • http://twitter.com/lauralexis Laura

I wish the jacket was a bit shorter and I hate the shoes fullstop. Still love the overall look, and so happy to see someone trying something new on the red carpet.

    • Anonymous

I was trying to figure out why her abdomen looked bloated, and you are right – it’s the arched back thing.  She looks like she’s trying to fill out the shirt.  I think I don’t actually like anything at all about this outfit.

    • MilaXX

I like the look, hate the bag and really don’t like the hair. I usually think she looks a bit scrawny, but her legs look really good in those shorts and I love the shoes.

    • Anonymous

She is gorgeous, I covet those shoes!

    • Vaniljekjeks

      Fucking fantastic!

    • Anonymous

Meh. She kind of looks like a waiter.

    • Valerie Owens

Ooh yes, girlfriend! Work it! Love the shoes.

    • Anonymous

Not WERQing for me. The jacket looks too big and the sleeves come down too far on her hand and the shirt doesn’t look crisp at all. Not a fan of celebrities wearing waiter attire. If they’ve ever had to do that for a living, I doubt they’d want to wear it ever again.

    • http://knittedfuin.tumblr.com/ Eruwenfuin

She does look mighty fine, but those shoes are hurting my eyes. I hate them, and somebody should set fire to them. As to the shirt…well I think the fact that the lady wearing them this time has some acutal boobs (as opposed to the model, who looks to be flatchested in that picture, as well as styled to a tee), which causes the shirt to be a bit more…poofy.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I really like this gal. I am pretty sure I’ve never seen her act though, so I have no idea if she is talented or not.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, I can’t say I olve this look at all.  It’s a cute, witty look but that shirt just doesn’t fit properly.  And I hate that hair with a passion.  It just looks limp and lifeless.  Personally, I think if you are going to do a look inspired by a service waiter you need to do some really fabulous hair to contrast.  this hair actually looks like the waitress I had at dinner last night.  Serviible.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

Love the outfit on her, love the shoes, but not together.

    • aussiegal77

Her posing threw me off for a bit there.  On close inspection, the shoes = FAB and I even love the clutch!  The outfit in general just works. Or…WERQS!!  Thumbs up.

    • shorty j

this is probably because I’m a big ole butch queer (okay, it’s TOTALLY because of that), but MOAR WOMEN IN TUXEDOES. My rack is too huge to pull ‘em off, so I have to live vicariously through others.

Plus MAN I wish shorts would become legit business attire. You should see some of the skirts I have to deal with all day, and yet I can’t wear shorts that are longer and way more flattering without getting the side-eye from my boss.

    • Anonymous

WERQ!!! it’s fresh she looks great. I have a little problem with the blouse but that’s it.

    • Anonymous

      Hate it.

The outfit is suffering from multiple personality disorder.  It’s a 70’s bar mitzvah on top, and a modern, chic outfit on the bottom.

If you ever worked as a server for a catering company – you would never want to wear a ruffled shirt and bowtie again.
Out for me….but it may be the bad flahbacks to the unflattering work outfit. No, its still an out.

    • http://www.facebook.com/WendyLKaufman Wendy Kaufman

Wow, I just don’t like it. She looks like a British schoolboy, or maybe a cocktail server in a James Bond-themed casino. Don’t like the shoes, my eye goes right to them–too bright. Hair’s a mess, but she’s duplicating the model there. Purse is just an odd choice. Yes, SHE’S beautiful, but that outfit is just not working.

      I want those shoes!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GQIN74TNNQROY5JFPOWWBGJWEM andy

If it does not fit, you must convict. Sorry, kids–wearing clothing in your actual size should be the first hurdle on the road to a WERQ.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I dig the dressy shorts with a jacket look, though this jacket doesn’t seem to fit quite right.  It doesn’t define her waist as well as it should, and the sleeve seems a tad too long.

I’d like it better with a scarf at the neck instead of that cheesy bow tie.

Right! She looks AMAZING and the shoes are fierce.

    • Joyce VG

Don’t like it.  I don’t like how she is modeling it and it looks too big on her.  The shoes are fab but they don’t really work with the clothes.  I must be insane.  Why don’t I see the love like TLo?

      • Alyson Lamble

Right there with you.  Shoes are fierce, and the clutch is fun, but she looks like a little boy dressed up in daddy’s tux.  Not a good look for her.

    • Anonymous

She shouldn’t have copied the hair, but apart from that she looks amazing. The again, she could probably make a burlap sack look glamorous.

The toe straps on those shoes look like they’re strangling her third toe; really weird placement. The overall look still rocks.

I do not understand the great love for Ms. Kruger, and while I think she’s got great legs, this look makes her look like a box dressed in a cocktail lounge uniform.  She wads her hair up like that all the time, so it’s not as if she went out on a limb there.  I’m not even all that crazy about the shoes, at least with this outfit.

She’s got the attitude for WERQ, but the clothes say work, or “would you like an appetizer with your drink?”

    • Ted Kane

Poor girl.  I didn’t realize things were so bad in Hollywood that well-known actors had to start working for tips at red carpet events.  You keep your chin up, Diane!  I’m sure a movie role or cameo in a sitcom or something will come along soon.

I can’t help it, I just hate that bow tie SO MUCH. I absolutely adore the look, but the bow tie just seems so Chloe Sovigny to me. In the mockable way, not the fashionista way. If anyone has ever even called her that. The shirt doesn’t look like it’s fitting so hot either, actually. I think I’d give this an IN but not a WERQ. I do get what you’re saying about breaking the mold though

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_35OW6VJZLWTQDQHS4JLRTVC2JA Akumabunny

      Ausgezeichnet, Fraulein Kruger!

    • Jessica Goldstein

I’m the outlier on this one, I guess. Like the look on the model. But between the lack of belt and the posture, it’s not doing it for me at all here.

    • Anonymous

I covet the shoes, and the shorts have some really interesting design to them. God she’s gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

Not really happy with the fact that her hair is styled just like the model’s, but I can’t think what other hairstyle would look as good here. All I can say is long live Dietrich!

    • Anonymous

While applaud an unconventional approach to red-carpet dressing, this is a little too costume-y for me. If this were an In or Out post, I wouldn’t vote her Out, but I can’t cosign on a WERQ.

No, boys. She looks like a cater waiter.

But the shoes are super fierce. I’ll give you that one.

Meh. Out – does nothing for her body.  But the shoe – thems nice!

    • Anonymous

I’m kind of on the fence with this one.  It’s nice to see a non-gown on the red carpet, and it’s not that she looks bad…I really don’t like the shoes and I think they are influencing me.  I like it better in the shots that crop her feet.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Wow, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.

I unreservedly hate it, from the limp hair to the toes escaping from the hurty looking shoes.  This isn’t Dietrich – it’s a waitress in a borrowed jacket at a bad off-broadway 30’s musical review.

    • Anonymous

Sorry, but she’s kind of a waitress at a resort in San Diego.  Except for the shoes.  They’re great, but they don’t go with anything.   Hair and makeup look good too.  Hmm… Maybe she spilled something on her gown at the pre-party and made the waitress trade clothes with her.   In that case, she’s in for sheer resourcefulness.

    • Anonymous

love it! this look is so on-trend and perfect in every way; those shoes are amazing!

    • Anonymous

On the model, it looks good. Here – it’s just…a variety of clothes that just don’t quite work together. There’s something about the whole ensemble that’s a bit off. It may be that she’s not feeling comfortable (not clothes-fit-wise, but general-feeling-wise) – she certainly doesn’t look it.

    • Anonymous

I love the idea of this outfit, but this isn’t working for me. Maybe it’s her posture, because she looks like a pot-bellied ringmaster who decided to wear shorts instead of long pants. LOVE the shoes and her makeup looks very pretty.
I do think the outfit looks fab on the model, though, so maybe it’s just the way Diane is posing that’s ruining the outfit for me.

    • oohsparkley!

I always get a chuckle out of the differing opinions.  Here’s mine –  It isn’t my favorite look but she is working it. I like the jacket and shorts.  I think the blouse should be more fitted, I don’t really like ties on women.  I think ties, and especially bow ties, look corny and dated. So maybe something completely different for the blouse.  Love the shoes.  And I don’t think she’s arching her back, with heels that high, I think it just happens as a counter balance.  Back to you, TLo.

    • Anonymous

Well, if TLo says its great, I bow down to them, but I don’t like it at all, except for the shoes. I think she looks odd.

I hate to argue with my gay gods of blogging, but…. the only IN here for me is the shoes, the are absolutely fab. The little mary jane collar on the blouse with the bow tie and the drop waist blouse, no thank you. And the shorts, just no. After another look I like the jacket and think it would look great paired with something else.
