Selena Gomez for Glamour

Posted on August 09, 2011

The Disney factory’s setting another indentured servant free and Glamour is positively breathless about it.

“Selena Gomez is having a very good year. Wizards of Waverly Place, the show she’s starred in since age 13, is in its final season, so at 19, she’s -officially graduating from the -Disney Channel and joining the grown-up Hollywood universe. First project? The girlfriend-getaway summer rom-com Monte Carlo, in which she starred alongside Katie Cassidy and Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester. Then there’s her -single “Who Says,” which zoomed to platinum status off her latest album, When the Sun Goes Down (Britney Spears even co-wrote one song). Plus, in case you’ve missed their extreme cuteness in the tabloids, she’s dating Justin Bieber. We’re lucky she had time to talk!”

On having a visible presence on Twitter and Facebook: “I love that I can stay connected with my fans and be able to tell them what’s going on—their opinions are so important to me. But at the same time, it’s very weird. I think the Internet can be a great thing but also really evil. Something can instantly hurt your feelings.”

On Justin Bieber fans posting threatening messages about her online: “Yeah, I’m human, so of course certain things sometimes hurt. I just laugh at it.”

It’s mostly a publicist’s wet dream, but the pictures are super-cute. Grown up, but not too much so. Like a girl spending the afternoon in her closet trying on outfits for friends. Sweet.

Although her lipstick looks like it was provided by Sherwin Williams.

She looks closer to 11 than 19.

I know, she’s making me feel old and I am 21.

Love the looks. They take me right back to me at 17 in the 1980′s. And if that’s Sherwin Williams lipstick I’d like a bucket, please.

The first pic made me think of Marie Osmond. The second, where she is dressed like the Biebs, is adorable.

But you are so right about the lipstick.

She looks stiff. I wonder if I instantly hurt her feelings?

    • Anonymous

Its ok.   Apparently, she will just laugh at it.

    • Anonymous

wow really? she seems like a nice kid.  how would you handle death threats and all the other craziness the nutjob beiber fans throw at her? she’s handling it pretty well  at 19.

  • MilaXX

I like her. I think she mostly gets it right when it comes to fashion and for some reason she one of the few Disney stars that I can stand.

    • Anonymous

I don’t know anything about her work, but I think she’s absolutely adorable. I love that she gets it right most of the time. I think her peers could take a lesson from her.

  • Toto Maya

Wow, she is 19? People tell me I look young for my age, but dang. She could pass for a 12 year old no problem.

  • MilaXX

I kinda feel for her. Those Beiber fans are so batshit that they were sending her death threats when they finally confirmed they were dating. I bet they really do send some nasty emails/tweets.

More importantly, there is also a fashion spread with Christina Hendricks (!!) in this issue!

    She’s just adorable.

My nine-year-old daughter was ecstatic about this shoot.  LOL

Personally, last/first pic is the best, but I love the one with the sunglasses, too.

  • Lies L.

I don’t usually like any of the Disney stars (and certainly not Bieber) but I’ve always kind of liked her. She looks pretty and fresh and she comes across as reasonably sensible. I hope she can keep her career going as an adult, too. I do feel bad for her. Bieber fans are insane.

  • Anonymous

    Cute!

I don’t get the hair. Why is it a mess?

  • Anonymous

she is certainly a cutie. I hope she makes good career and personal decisions now that she’s out from under the Disney umbrella. That has to be a rough transition.

The pic with the hat is the best. Can’t see that WTF hair styling.

I love the the sunglasses and white dress picture. And the last one. She’s going to be a beautiful woman.

the pictures look fun and she is super cute. luv the last 2 pictures. i hope she finds success as an adult in hollywood, the disney factory doesn’t seem to prepare kids well for life after disney.

  • Anonymous

she looks more masculine than Justin Bieber, I wonder if she wears a strap-on in the bedroom.. UPS! DID I WRITE THAT OUT LOUD?

    • Anonymous

not very hard to look more masculine than JB anyway….

(although I don’t think she actually does… but she could easily pass for a tween)

  • Anonymous

I adore her. Plus, she can wear the hell out of clothes. Check out her video “Love You Like a Love Song” for proof.

    • Anonymous

I didn’t know how old she was when I saw that video, but the fact she looks younger than my 13 year old brother makes it seem oddly inappropriate. The big hair, the men…I don’t know. Maybe I’m overly sensitive, especially since she is technically an adult, but I don’t like seeing a young (looking) girl dressed as a sex object.

      • Anonymous

The corset outfit she wears in the pinata scene, and the main disco fabulous look did make me a little uncomfortable but honestly she is 19. The most provocative look in the video is miles more demure than what Britney and Miley were/are sporting at that age. Her motivation for the video treatment was a desire to do something “high fashion” and I must say I like it better than Cyrus’ take.

No, you’re right. I am only 21, but I tend to feel really over protective when it comes to the portrayal of young girls, even legally aged ones. I just look at her and I’m reminded of my little brother’s classmates rather than girls at my college.

Against all odds, she works the pictures.

i’ve never seen a damn thing with her in it, but she’s a very pretty young lady.

  • Anonymous

She doesn’t grate on my nerve (after all these years I only have one left) like other celebrities her age. These snaps are completely cute and now I’m envious that I didn’t have a spread done on me when I was her age. They could have even used the same clothes.

  • Lisa Kremer

She’s done a great job of being adorable, likeable and funny. We have banned a lot of the Disney shows from our house for being harsh, screetchy, or just insulting. But her show stays because, against all expectations, she’s actually really funny. She gets it right most of the time on the red carpet, too. Thanks for the fun editorial.

The first is too close and umm… stiff? I can’t put my finger on it but it does nor quite work.

The following evolve in cuteness, if a little obvious

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1133424434 Maria McGarry

She’s adorable, but I have hated her ever since I took some kids to Jingle Ball and discovered she has all the stage presence of dental floss. She needs the Bieb. Pics are cute though they are very Disney still — compare these to Emma Watson’s recent coming of age pictures and you see the difference.

OMG, am hyperventilating!  An age appropriate fashion shoot for a teenager.  What’s next, the four white horses?

  • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

She is ADORABLE!  I just think she’s a wonderful gal for my favorite little cousin to look up to right now. Selena is her absolute FAV! (next to ugh beiber..) She’s 10. I truly hope nothing crazy comes out about her. I’m glad she passed the Miley obsession.

I’m not sure how I feel about the fact she has freshly f**ked hair in every picture…

  • Anonymous

What’s with the troll doll hair? She’s awfully cute, though.

  • Anonymous

Nothing earth shattering here but she looks cute. She’s making me feel very old cuz I swear she looks 14. Maybe. Still, cute girl. Cute shots.

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

My teenage daughters are pretty unimpressed with her

  • Anonymous

Out of all of the Disney stars, I’ve always liked her the most.  My son adores her.  She looks beautiful in these pictures.

  • http://profiles.google.com/burchardg Greg Burchard

Sorry – this spread just bores the heck out of me.  Her expressions look blank and generic and the clothes are a yawn.  But I’m old and cranky and would rather see more interesting actors with diverse experiences being covered than products from what you call the Disney factory.  And the ‘all grown up and doing adulty things – a girlfriend romcom’ – is the silliest statement….  ugh.

  • Anonymous

Cute kid.  [Stifling yawn]  Let’s move on to something interesting now!

  • Anonymous

She looks like Biebs in the blue trousers!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elaine-Lang/100000366510311 Elaine Lang

Well, I’m going to give her all manner of thumbs up solely based on the fact that she’s a graduating Disney child who did NOT decide to launch herself into adulthood with a borderline pornographic photoshoot, a DUI arrest, or a stint in rehab.

    So, Good For Her.

She does have a baby face, Disney must have loved that they could have her playing a much younger kid.

  • Anonymous

This is the nicest and most age appropriate I’ve ever seen her.  She tends to favor much more sophisticated and older looks that do nothing for her because of her enormous baby faced bobble head.

  • http://ungrateful.tumblr.com Stephanie

Love her. She is adorable. Not sure what’s going on with her hair styling hair, but she is just so precious.

Also, not quite sure what people are talking about with her age. She looks like I did at 19. Hell, I’m almost 22 and we look about the same age. I’d take her looking her age rather than trying to pass for a 25+ year old.

  • Anonymous

Love the cat-eye glasses and the lip and nail color in the last shot.  She’s so cute.

  • http://twitter.com/foodhussy foodhussy

those last 2 pictures are adorable – it’s funny she looks SO young but when you see her biebs it looks like she’s a cougar!

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Love the description of her playing dress-up.  The pic of her in white wearing the cool sunglasses is darling.

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

That last picture is gorgeous, and the lipstick isn’t so annoying.

I think she looks great–very soft looks, although the lipstick is very aggressive (except for the last photo).

I’ll take the white cat eye sunglasses and the top she has on with them, please.

Love it! Especially that last picture.

I want those sunglasses.  Anybody know where I can buy them?

    Super cute.

This looks like someone’s cheesy modelling card. Or whatever they call it. The picture with the tie – I mean, really?
