Reese Witherspoon for Lindex

Posted on August 25, 2011

Reese Witherspoon is the new face of Swedish label Lindex for its Fall 2011 ad campaign titled “California Denim,” and the pictures are a veritable avalanche of cheese.

“The big autumn campaign is called California Denim and in the leading role we see the Oscar winning and internationally famous actress Reese Witherspoon. Positive, warm and full of energy Reese is perfect for a collection which combines a relaxed style with Hollywood glamour.

“I have always loved denim and knitted garments which can be mixed and matched. Lindex’ fashion suits my style perfectly and I am very pleased to be a model for the new collection”, says Reese Witherspoon.”

“I have always loved denim and knitted garments.” Oh, HONEY. Don’t let Swedish marketing teams write your dialogue, mkay? And hey, a gal’s gotta pay the bills, we get that, but you might want to do a little due diligence before you sign the contracts because these clothes are so not suited for you. In fact, we can’t even picture you wearing most of these looks in your real life.

Come ON. This is JCPenney catalogue posing.

The clothes aren’t bad (although that ruffled flannel shirt is … odd, to say the least) but they don’t look anything like Reese, who favors a sort of southern country club aesthetic. The big chunky sweaters and boot cut jeans just don’t suit her at all, which makes her wide-grinned vamping all the more unintentionally hilarious. We don’t care if celebrities take these kind of spokesmodel deals, but if the product doesn’t suit the celebrity, the results can be more amusing than aspirational.

A few of these looks are pretty cute on her, but I can’t get past the back-to-school-advertisement posing.

And why Witherspoon for a Swedish firm? Weird connection for me. Maybe she epitomizes California to them?

      • Jude Brown

And what’s up with the big, gray horse blanket?

      • Anonymous

TOTALLY back-to-school. It looks like she borrowed these clothes from a friend’s 17-year-old daughter (except the floppy hat and flares, which she seems to have borrowed from JLo).

    • Alex McGeagh

Maybe I’m the only one, but I think she looks perfectly cute and suited to these clothes, actually. Of course, I don’t follow her usual aesthetics so I could really be missing something here. She looks very at ease and like she belongs in them to me, so mission accomplished, I guess? 😉

      • Anonymous

Nope you are not alone. I think she looks really cute in the clothes, even if her modeling skills leave a little something to be desired. But I agree with TLo on the ruffled flannel. That’s a big no no.

      • MelanieSuzanne

Agreed. I think she looks adorable and quite comfortable.

      • Zubair Ghumro

I am with you too. She looks super cute and those outfits suit her to T.

      • Anonymous

Maybe she’s trying to change her image a bit?  I also think of her as southern belle-esque, but the swedish firm certainly sees her as all-american.  And some of the clothes do suit (once you get past the mugging).  The belted sweater with throw looks fab on her.  If I just saw the red seater pics, though, I wouldhave wondered who it was and never guessed Reese.  But I think she looks great.

      • Anonymous

I think she looks great in these clothes.  There’s a few outfits there I’d buy in a minute!  With TLo’s comments I thought I was missing something?!?

      • Anonymous

I agree that she looks cute and suited to these clothes.  Perhaps TLO’s dislike of her is coloring their perceptions.

      • Shannon Stewart

It’s not that they physically don’t suit, it’s that they don’t suit her usual look.  She’s been in the public eye long enough that she already has a image, and this isn’t it.  Physically she looks great.  If she was just starting her career, this would have worked well.  But she usually dresses far more traditional and formal.  Her normal casual wear is still a dress and heels.

      • Anonymous

        I’m with you too.

      • Linda Merrill

Agree – she looks fantastic. The Swedish company is selling California good looks. While Reese is not really a Cali girl (a la Cameron Diaz) she gives off that vibe. It’s all very approachable and youthful without trying too hard. Should be a big seller for the company.

      • Jessica Ballinger

I kind of like this stuff on her, too.  The gray sweater look, if she’d drop the horse blanket, and all of the red sweater look.  Just me, though, I love jeans and am always more inclined to like a look that includes them.

      • Anonymous

This is the kind of casual that really appeals to me. I think Reese looks adorable in all the looks, and that they do suit her. Whether she aspires to the *cowgirl chic* in real life, I don’t know, but living in the West, I’ve seen women dressed this way more often perhaps than the rest of you.

      • Anonymous

Totally agreed!  I imagine she hangs out in jeans and flannel alot at ther ranch in Ojai.  She is an accmoplished horsewomen and they suit her very well.

      • Anonymous

Definitely agree with you, especially as I don’t know her usual aesthetic either. I think she looks cute, and I love her make-up. Obviously smoothed with our very good friend Photoshop, but the fresh and fun vibe is still there.

      • Sheri Z

I’m so happy to see I’m not alone.  I think she looks perfectly adorable — and she’s selling the image of golden California girl quite well, whether or not that’s what she actually is from birth.  I think she looks fabulous, and this is one of those times I’m happy to be among those who, apparently,  just don’t get it.

    • Aidan B

It’s cheesy all right, but I’d wear any of those knits. The denim, not so much.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, I love the sweaters and scarves. Her posing is so funny, though.

    • Anonymous

Also, what happened to Reese’s thighs?! That last picture is especially painful.

      • Anonymous

either that’s not her body, or she’s been photoshopped to barbie proportions

      • Anonymous

Totally agree–she looks really skinny, and not in an anorexic way, but in a photoshopped they’re-stretching-her-body-out-to- make-it-look-longer way.  Reese is short, and these photos (especially the full jeans shots) make her legs look like Gisele Bundchen.  Which would be lovely if it were actually true.

        • Anonymous

This is exactly what I was thinking! Photoshopped to be lengthened and slimmed beyond belief.

          And yup again.

        • Anonymous

Oh, yeah. I was trying to figure out what looked strange about these pictures.

        • Anonymous

Yeah, I was wondering whose body they were using, because it sure doesn’t look like hers.

    • Breda Smith

A lot of this is really cute…if you look at Reese Witherspoon and ONLY see “generic pretty blonde.” But celebrities’ faces (and names) come with more baggage than just their looks.

    • Daniela ‘Dani’ Weiss-Bronstein

These clothes are so Dutch, and I get why they chose Reese – they have someone who looks Dutch, but is internationally recognizable. The clothes look great on her, even if I would never put them on her in real life. Funny how she looks more like a Gretchen in these shots than Wretchen ever did.

      • Hanna Fogelberg

Lindex is Swedish, not dutch though… But she could pass as Swedish as well I guess.

    • Pink Sith

What’s with all the ruffles?  Do Sweeds have an affinity for 1980’s styling and 17 magazine style posing. Seriously. I saw several outfits similar to the ones above from my 17 magazine fall style spectacular back in the 1980s (yeah. I’m that old)

    • Anonymous

I dunno, I think she looks pretty cute…aside from the boots in the 3rd picture.

    • Susan Collier

Where’s my time-travelling DeLorean? The clothes and poses and feathered hair say 1982 to me. I think the clothes are pretty cute though.

      • Anonymous

        I was thinking mid-late 70’s.

    • Anonymous

I love all of the outfits and although Reese looks great, they’re definitely nothing like what she wears IRL.  Maybe more Kate Hudson-style than Reese?

      • Noiresque

Yes! Totally Kate Hudson for the California vintage thing, or Julia Roberts if they want to skew slightly older and has that rural/hippie vibe cutting through her A List confidence.

Apart from the chic red ensemble, Reese looks like she’s on set about to shoot a scene for some film set on a dude ranch.

    • Kiltdntiltd

And did anyone else notice just how much they have shaved off her legs with photoshop?  Girl has some nice gams but they gave soda straws.
She pretty much tried to bring it, but this is so out of her reality she couldn’t get there.  The clothes are all okay. Nothing eye catching or really new in any of it.  The whole look was done to death and then some in the 80’s.

    • Ailsa Martin

Reese Witherspoon is a pretty looking woman, but a. She looks pretty ridiculous, and b. She has a fine and beautiful body. But this is not it.

    • Judy_J

If you think Reese looks cheesy in these photos, you should see her in the Avon catalogs.  She’s one of their spokeswomen, too. Like you said, a gal’s gotta make a living. I’m kind of loving those bell bottoms, though.

    • Sarah Bailey

Another one who likes the clothes but thinks the poses are hilar.

    • Terence Ng

The red ones are cute, but not really her. I would say that I can’t see her in the first two or last three, but the others all look like things she’s worn before while out and about. Practical and clean.

    • Anonymous

It could have been a while ago. I find these looks to post-teenage for a mother.

Also, how many inches of false legs are there??? picture #3 could be Reese’s head on Rosie H-W’s body.

      • Anonymous

Seriously. As a fellow short girl, I’m a little offended. It’s as if there’s something wrong with Reese’s petite stature. Plus, she’s a shapely girl, but they got rid of her hips and made her legs look like toothpicks. Grrrr…

    • Anonymous

IDK…I think she’s pretty adorable in most of them. She is from NASHVILLE, ya know.

      • Erica

My thought too.  This seems to me what the Swedes might think would sell as something a woman from the American South would wear, if and when it gets cold down here (well, I’m in Texas, so I’m being inclusive here).  Will it ever get cold again here?  Will it?  When might that exact date be?  Those sweaters look delightful, what with the promise of cold air and all, and she looks super cute.

    • Kathryn P

I can say loads for these ads since I’m an American in Sweden and have been seeing them. I didn’t even recognize it was Reese Witherspoon–I thought it was a model who vaguely resembled Reese Witherspoon. I mean, she’s blonde and blue-eyed, so she kind of passes as a Swede. These looks do not suit her at all.

    • Chris Halpin

Horrible photoshopping aside on that list picture, that’s an amazing look on her. Slightly jealous I can’t go for the top and belt, to be honest.

    • Anonymous

I agree it all looks very catalog-y, but I think she looks kind of cute and comfortable.

Not a fan of ruffled denims and flannels at all….she looks ridiculous in the big brimmed hat.

    • Jessica Goldstein

My big question is how did they get her into those clothes? Does Lindex have a petite line, or was everything custom altered and then Photoshopped? Reese isn’t tall enough by a long shot to have the proportions work off the rack.

      • Anonymous

I’d be so damn tempted to buy some of these sweaters if they did come proportioned for petite girls. It’d be refreshing if they were altered for her, instead of her being altered to look tall.

    • Anonymous

Is it me, or don’t these clothes look like they belong on high schoolers?

    • MandyJane

The grey cowled sweater made me think of Knots Landing, lol.  I like some of these outfits, but not the sweaters, except the red one. Also, she looks great in that big hat.

    • Anonymous

    • M Carlson

If you take away the fact that it’s Reese Witherspoon, the clothes are really cute.

    • MilaXX

This is an ad more suited to Julianne Hough than Reese.

      • Anonymous

Yes, totally.  Or as someone said above, even Kate Hudson, though it would be outside her image, too, though closer.  But I do think (aside from the photshopping) that she looks good.

      • aimee_parrott

        Or Carrie Underwood.

        • Anonymous

I don’t get, since when do *those* outfits characterize a ‘California Girl’?

    • Anonymous

these remind me of fashion spreads from ‘Teen magazine circa 1975. And I should know because for some inexplicable reason I still have a few…..Love’s Baby Soft anyone…..

    • Olechka Milashka

I like the clothes and I like most of the looks on her

    • Anonymous

It would appear that Ms Witherspoon has had a growth spurt, why she must be at least 5’10” now! 😉

    • Anonymous

I really like most of these looks and she looks pretty but, you’re right, way too hippy-dippy for Miss Reese’s persona.

“I have always loved denim and knitted garments.”  Maybe it sounds better in Swedish?

    • Zubair Ghumro

I really like the first photo; that smile is infectious. In rest of the photos she looks cute and the styling is decent but posing is pretty basic.

    • Anonymous

I think Miss Dogbeds was involved somehow.

    • Sam

Does anyone else think that these looks are more suited for Kate Hudson?

    • MerridithK

Living in Norway, I can say that in these pictures and in these clothes she looks like MANY Norwegian and Swedish girls I see around town.  Hair color, body shape–she looks very Swedish and is in that way relatable for the Scandinavian market.

    • Erin Nice

The posing leaves a lot to be desired, but I love these clothes on her. I think she looks really cute. And I’m wanting a couple of the sweaters for myself.

    • rynerman

I think these clothes and this spread would work much better on someone like Carrie Underwood.  Small, blond, country, and this look seems to fit her profile much better than R.W.

    • Anonymous

Huh.  I think she could easily wear these clothes – whether she chooses to, I don’t know, but I think that for casual clothes they mostly look pretty good on her

    • Loren S

      • Erin Liss

Agreed–I’m certainly no fashion maven, but I just can’t with that denim ruffled shirt!!

    • Joyce VG

I love the clothes and I think she looks great in them.

    • Anonymous

She and Elle Fanning and Hailee Steinfeld need to start trading spokesmodeling gigs. What kind of crazy pills are they passing around these days in fashion industry marketing circles?

    • Anonymous

“I have always loved denim and knitted garments.”

Oh, come on. You know you talk like that all the time.

“Heidi Klum is a tremendous inspiration for millions of fashion and reality television blogging professionals like us.”

      We all do.

“I always turn to TomandLorenzo dot com to stay up to date on the latest trends in celebrity fashion.”

      I still like Reese, though.

    • Anonymous

Did anyone else look at the striped serape/scarf or indian blanket style shawl (I’m assuming these are knits and not woven or flannel) and think of Julie (Dogblanket?). Also Gretchen with regard to color and loose knit–they maybe should look to Lindex to tout their wares, hmmmm? Still in this case I liked most of the looks.

      • Jillian Liszewski

Yes!  My first thought was — JULIE!

    • Shalia

Through about 75% of the pictures, I could have sworn it was Carrie Underwood posing, not Reese.

    • Suzie Vazquez

Are her legs really that long? The hat is kind of funny on her. Oh well who am I to judge, she looks better than I would 😉

    • Megan Patterson

I think someone got her confused with Kate Hudson.

    • Hanna Fogelberg

Well Lindex are known in Sweden for being the no 1 store for grandmas and women in thir late fifties… My mother who is 50 years old wont even go near their stores. I don’t really get why they picked Witherspoon for this campaign but she makes the clothes look younger than the age group 50 and up.

    • Allison Fisseler

Aside from maybe the ruffled flannel shirt and ruffled denim shirt, I think these totally look like things that RW might wear, but maybe more in her “personal” life (with the kids, running errands, general casual-ness) than her public life. They are also things I would like to wear – maybe IKEA can start carrying it in the US? :)

    • Amanda in Austin

It looks to me like they pasted her face onto someone else. She didn’t even wear the clothes, I bet.

    • Anonymous

This is not California Denim. It’s Oklahoma Denim, Eastern Oregon Denim, and occasionally Vermont Denim.

    • Anonymous

“I have always loved denim and knitted garments which can be mixed and matched.”
I also love having some tall skinny model’s body parts mixed and matched with mine.

    • Anonymous

Ha!  I used to live in Sweden.  Lindex is basically the JCP or Kohl’s of Sweden.

    • just julie

I bet they paid her a shit-ton of money for that.
I would assume the advertisements will only appear in Sweden.

    • April

Weird. In these pictures she looks like an odd combination of Amy Poehler and Kristen Stewart.

    • MinAgain

      Three words…”Sweet Home Alabama”.

      I’m just sayin’.

    • Anonymous

Chicos goes to a hoedown.  Puhleaze.

    • myblackfriendsays

I don’t like the skinny jeans, the ruffles or the shoes. I do like the non-skinny jeans and the knitted garments.

    • Vickie Lord

The Photoshopping is distracting to say the least.  I like the clothes though, and she looks good.

    • Emily

These clothes do not look like her at all.  It’s as if someone photo shopped her head on the top of another model.  Weird.

    • Ebba Svantesson

Hm, being swedish I’m surprised by them having her as spokesperson, it’s kinda a lame store, cheap and not at all youthful, and I can’t see why a famous model would help their sales… Even weirder is that Rachel Zoe was their last spokesperson I think she even did a line for them. Also I dont think anyone is gonna think that she’s from the american south, she’s just american..

    • Pennymac

These looks remind me of the year my father trusted me with his J.C.Penney credit card and let me go school shopping myself for the tenth grade. 1978. Hence, I’m misty eyed and nostalgic, hearing ABBA in my head, and liking pretty much all of it except the big floppy hat. I’m not, however, convinced that Reese’s body is in these clothes. Is it possible that her head is photo shopped onto the Swedish body that is wearing these?

    • Anonymous

My first reaction to these pictures was “Is she making Sweet Home Alabama 2?”
      My second was:
“Doesn’t this bitch have an Oscar?  She parlayed a freaking Oscar into this?  Jesus, honey, pawn the Oscar if you need money that bad.”

      • Anonymous

You would be AMAZED at the status of Hollywood A-list actors, many with Oscars in the hands, who do VERY lucrative ad campaigns in foriegn countries.  It’s hard to pass up a wad of cash when they also promise you it will never run in the States.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

LOL.  “Hollywood Glamour.”  I do not think it means what they think it means.

    • Anonymous

She looks tall and leggy in the pictures. As a fellow short person, I can totally see signing up for a venture if they promised to give me height in the photographs.

    • Brendan Foehr

This collection falls somewhere between the hippie-ish Olsen twin, Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon, and Holly Hunter in that show where she was a hard livin’, opossum wrasslin’ Okie detective.  Nowhere do these looks say Reese Witherspoon, and the fact that it’s her in the photos is like some mind-fucking optical illusion. But when I think of Reese, I think chipper, well-meaning and clueless.

    • tw125

I think the clothes look good on her but there’s not much connection between them and her public persona. I’d buy it more if this were a promotion for a movie role.

The clothing prices aren’t much different from what you’d pay at JCPenney. The jeans are € 29.95 (about $43).  Why should she pose differently?

    • Anonymous

I agree that these look like silly back-to-school clothes.

Reese looks beautiful, though, and doesn’t seem very airbrushed, which is refreshing.

    • Anonymous

I will give you the critique on the posing, it is sooo “catalogue”.  However, I think these looks are right up Reeses alley.  She is an avid horsewomen and has a variety of animals on her ranch so I’m guessing she hangs out in jeans quite a lot.  It’s a good fit IMO, and the blonde bridges the gap between CA and Sweden so that makes a lot of sense to me.  Really, someday you boys are going to have to get over your “We hate Reese” syndrome, she’s not going away….. :)

    • Qitkat

There’s a really cute video with Reese shooting her campaign here.

    • margaret meyers

This isn’t haute couture, but they are very wearable.  At first I was going to say ‘isn’t great that Reese has been hired to model even though she’s 25′ and then I got a load of the photoshop.  They couldn’t just make her look like an attractive 30 year old, they had to make her look a sylph-like 20.

    • Anonymous

Because there are no beautiful blonde types in Sweden.

    • Qitkat

There is a video here which shows her shooting this campaign. Click on “Behind the Scenes”. She looks like she had a lot of fun shooting it, and also that the editors could have chosen more dynamic poses for the print ad.

“A veritable avalanche of cheese.” That’s actually a part of my personal vision of heaven. Mmm, cheese…. Back to this spread (mmm, spreadable cheese…), it IS pure catalog modeling. The look of these clothes brings up memories of my tweenhood in the 70s, and I honestly can’t imagine Reese in that era. I can see her in country gear, and as a Swede, but not as a 70s girl. Some of the pieces are cute, but the ruffled shirts – denim ruffles, really? – make me glad the 70s are over.

    • Anonymous

God, can she mug for the camera or what.

    • Sara__B

She looks more like Carrie Underwood than Reese Witherspoon. Photoshop much?

    • Anonymous

Her posing is pretty lame and no, I cannot see her wearing any of this. I’d wear some of the “knitted garments” though.

    • Liana Brooks

The red sweater is pretty cute.

    • Kimmy Hescock

I kind of love the red sweater outfit.

    • Anonymous

      Her hair!!!!

It doesn’t go with any of the clothes.   It’s like this big glaring “what does not belong in this picture.”

Anyway.  Don’t like this woman.   But she has some nice red carpet looks.

    • Anonymous

The clothes may be fine, but they aren’t her and just don’t work as a result.  It would be like Angelina Jolie for Missoni or J.Lo for J. Crew.

    • Anonymous

No, it doesn’t look like Reece to my eyes, either.  From a Swedish marketing perspective, though, it may be different.

    • Anonymous

Lindex needs to get it some Sheryl Crow or Chely Wright in them thar threads.  As a knitter, I do like the design of all the knitted garments featured.

    • Catherine Rhodes

Sorry, but I think she looks fabulous.

    • Anonymous

It’s as if someone photoshopped her face on another model’s body.  There is too much disconnect here.  She is cute and comes across as “all-american” to me.  But a different part of america.

    • Anonymous

Yes, the posing is really awkward!! Surprisingly, after seeing the first pic, I like most of these. Nice and cozy looking, but not like Grandma’s clothes!!

    • Anonymous

I have to admit, I do love some of those knitted pieces! What can I say, I’m a sweater whore! But, ugh, the posing! It’s ridiculous! Further proof that not every pretty girl would make a good model!

    • Lisa

Actually, I really love the red sweater/red hat combo – it’s adorable, and she looks really cute in it!

I was so relieved when I got to the photos where she closed her mouth.  I do like the knits.

    • Laurie S. Neilsen

Take away the ruffles, and that is all stuff that I would wear. So I find it hard to find fault with this. But I can see how the posing is very catalog. In that way, it’s pretty silly.

I had that ruffled plaid shirt, in pink. In 1993. It should stay there.

Holy cow, this is some VERY BAD MODELING. Also the worst case of miscasting since Kevin Costner played “Robin Hood.” What, Carrie Underwood or Sandra Bullock weren’t available?

this looks more suited to jessica simpson than reese,

I think she looks adorable.  Can’t make that girl look bad!

I think she looks adorable.  I also like most of the clothes.  They’re not high fashion, but they’re cute casual looks.  I am a child of the 70’s/80’s, though, so I’m probably biased.  Also, I don’t understand what’s so terrible about Reese Witherspoon?  I like her fine.

    • Rachel Lee

I think she looks quite cute with the slouchy cap and dark red pullover.

Yes, but I think the clothing is JCPenny Catalogue, too.  It’s appropriately ordinary California girl (but she looks a lot taller and thinner than usual here…photoshop?  Maybe they just used her head on someone else’s body)

I had no idea cowgirls were so popular in Sweden.  Who knew?  However, the photos make Reese’s legs look amazingly long, considering she’s only about 5’2″ in real life.

She looks like carrie underwood in these photos.

She is not this smooth faced, thin or tall! they turned little bitty Reese into an exaggerated fashion illustration.

These have been on billboards all over town (Oslo) lately.  Although they advertise boring clothing, I got a few of my fiercest little black dresses from Lindex.

      Weird! Reese in Midwestern Talbots.

    • Hillary Block

      yaaaaay knitwear!

    • Toto Maya

She looks good in many of the photos… but they could have hired pretty much any model to do this.

    • Coelha

On the first two pictures, I could only think about Abba!

I actually really like most of the outfits, but I’m two things that Reese clearly isn’t: european and 20 years old.
I don’t see this as a California themed collection at all! This is what preppy college girls wear in the winter.

I actually think she looks great. Except for the denim tops, I can totally see her wearing these clothes.

If they wanted the breezy California blonde they should have hired Blake Lively or someone equally beachy and bohemian.
